These White Lies is a romantic suspense novel, featuring Elizabeth, a black cat FMC, and Brady, the ultimate touch-her-and-die MMC who is assigned to be her bodyguard after her estranged husband is found murdered - with both realising that this is not the first time they have met. A previous meet-cute at a masquerade party left them both dreaming of each other - and now they've been thrown into each other's paths once again. Elizabeth is in a lot of danger thanks to the dodgy dealings of her estranged husband - can Brady keep her safe? And will they both realise they're perfect for each other?
Kate Breitfeller has written a fantastic suspense novel, with danger lurking at every turn for Elizabeth. She is the epitome of the black cat FMC - she's fiercely independent, married to her job (that she's had to work hard to rebuild the reputation of after badmouthing by her ex), emotionally withdrawn, particularly around her family and especially her sister, and very reluctant to admit her feelings for Brady, even though she acknowledges them to herself. She suffers through the trauma towards the end of the novel with superhuman strength and grit, her unwavering belief in Brady's ability to find and rescue her getting her through it. It takes the interference of Sera, Brady's sister, to finally break that wall down and allow her to feel, to accept and share her feelings for Brady, and to build bridges with her family, her loyalty full and absolute at this point.
Brady... SWOON. He knows from the moment he lays eyes on Elizabeth again, four years after their one night stand, that she's the one for him. He calls her Firefly, he's constantly encouraging her, treats her like a Queen... and he'd burn the world down for her in a heartbeat. His feelings of failure regarding his sister's acid attack bleed through into his protection of Elizabeth, and he is determined never to fail anyone again, especially not her. From the moment she is taken, he is a man possessed, his brain in overdrive whilst his body completes the cool moves it takes to save her from the enemy. But again, he is unable to admit his feelings to her, despite being well aware of them himself.
Their chemistry is off the charts, sizzling hot with undercurrents of softer emotions swirling beneath the surface. The chemistry blends perfectly with the suspense woven throughout the book - you are constantly waiting for the next twist from the Lapidarists, whilst at the same time waiting to see if one or the other will admit their feelings. At the point at which Elizabeth is snatched from the nightclub, there is as much suspense from them not admitting their feelings as there is from the danger Elizabeth is in - a mark for me of just how good a romantic suspense novel this is.
My only real criticism of this was the repetition of scenes in the dual POV. I didn't feel it hit as hard as the author had anticipated it to, it just felt like a waste of wordage where we could have had more action. Or more spice. The spice levels were mid-warm, and whilst that wasn't bad, I do feel that there was potential for the temperature level to go up, which would have suited these characters and their passion for each other.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!
