Wildflower and Whiskey

Rate this book
“Wild as a storm. Strong as whiskey. He’s everything I should resist—and the only thing I’ll ever crave.”

Phoenix Thorne was the last man I wanted to see when I came back to Val-Du-Lys with my son.
But fate has a cruel sense of humor.
Now I’m working in his brewery… and sleeping in the loft above his garage.
He hasn’t changed.
Sharp edges. Hard muscles. Walls no one could scale.
And he still looks at me like I’m the wildflower that cut him all those years ago.
We were enemies once.
Now we’re neighbors.
Every stolen glance, every brush of his hand pulls us closer to a line we swore we’d never cross.
Then he kisses me.
Hard. Hungry. Reckless.
The kind of kiss that burns hotter than whiskey and leaves me aching for more.
He vowed he’d never forgive me.
I swore I’d never need him.
But the past has a way of catching up. Secrets that don’t stay buried. Threats that circle too close to the people I love.
And suddenly the man I betrayed is the only one standing between me and a storm I never saw coming.
Because once Phoenix claims me… he’ll fight like hell to keep me.

4 star Review Wildflower and Whiskey (Maple Valley #1) by R.C. Stephens

I know this is hard to believe, but I have only read a couple of books by R.C. Stephens but what I have read I have enjoyed.

Set in a small town, Val-Du-Lys this is Phoenix Thorne and single mum Elyna’s enemies to lovers story.

Wildflower and Whiskey is a romantic suspense story which was woven together with a strong storyline.

The secondary characters were engaging and I found myself invested in the story that the author wove.

Small-town second chances • slow-burn tension • mama-on-a-mission romance

Besties… buckle up, because this book dragged me straight into my feelings, shook me by the shoulders, kissed my forehead, and told me to heal. 😭🔥

The Vibes
This one is for my girlies who love:
wounded-but-resilient heroines
grumpy/repressed heroes with soft spots they swear don’t exist
small towns full of drama, rumors, and relatives acting like community surveillance cameras
slow-burn tension that cooks hotter than whiskey on an empty stomach

And baby? It delivers.

🌾 Elyna: My Wildflower Queen

From the very first chapter, I was ready to throw hands on Elyna’s behalf. The girl has been through it — and I mean through it. She’s coming home broke, exhausted, scared, and dragging all that emotional baggage behind her Kia like a tin can wedding send-off.

Single mom. No support. Running from the consequences of a man who gambled everything away except his responsibilities.

Yet she still shows up for her baby boy with grit, grace, and a smile she’s held together with duct tape and generational trauma.

I wanted to wrap her up in a blanket and hand her a warm latte.

🥃 Phoenix: Mr. Microbrewery Menace

And then there’s Phoenix Thorne — the town’s emotionally constipated king of craft beer.

This man walked out of the pages dripping with “I don’t have feelings” energy… meanwhile staring at Elyna like she’s the only oxygen molecule in Quebec.

Their history?

Messy.

Petty.

High school embarrassing.

Full of miscommunication and bruised egos they never dealt with.

Their chemistry?

Absolutely criminal. Listen — Phoenix can pretend all he wants, but the way he tracks Elyna across a room like she’s the last maple donut in his brother’s bakery? That man is gone.

❤️‍🔥 The Tension? BABY.

Enemies-to-lovers with “why do you still get under my skin?” energy.

Slow-burn glances that last half a chapter.

Him stepping in to help when she refuses to crumble in front of anyone else.

Her trying to keep her walls up while her heart does the Macarena anytime he breathes near her. This is my favorite flavor of emotional foreplay.

👶 Braden: The Real Main Character

Anytime that sweet baby popped up on the page, my ovaries started clapping. That’s it. That’s the note.

🥺 What This Book Is Really About

Yeah, it’s romance.

Yeah, it’s small-town chaos.

Yeah, Phoenix is fine as hell and acts like a walking slow-burn playlist.

But beneath it all, this book is about:
starting over
reclaiming confidence
breaking out of the cycle you were handed
finding unexpected support
learning you deserve softness even after life hardens you

It’s tender.

It’s heavy in spots.

It’s hopeful.

It’s healing.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Wildflower and Whiskey is the kind of small-town, second-chance romance that grabs you by the heart, sits you down, and whispers, “Girl, love can be soft even when life hasn’t been.”

Elyna is easy to root for.

Phoenix is impossible to ignore.

The tension is immaculate.

The emotional beats hit.

And the slow-burn payoff? Worth every page.

A gripping, emotional, beautifully written romance about choosing yourself, choosing love, and choosing a future that doesn’t look like your past.

Wildflower and Whiskey is an emotional, slow-burn second-chance romance that hits all the right notes—angst, tension, heartbreak, and ultimately, healing. R.C. Stephens delivers a story packed with depth and beautifully flawed characters you can’t help but root for.

This book follows two people whose lives have been shaped by pain and circumstance, pulling them apart just when they felt closest. Years later, they’re thrown back into each other’s worlds, and the chemistry? Still very much there. The author does a stunning job capturing that “we shouldn’t want this… but we do” energy, blending emotional vulnerability with swoon-worthy moments that keep you flipping pages.

What really stands out is Stephens’ ability to write characters that feel real. The wounds they carry, the choices they regret, and the hope they’re afraid to chase again—it’s all portrayed with honesty and heart. Their journey isn’t easy, but it’s compelling, heartfelt, and ultimately uplifting.

If you love:
🌾 Second-chance romance
🥃 A little angst mixed with a lot of heart
🔥 Emotional tension and undeniable chemistry
💔 Characters who grow, heal, and choose love again

…then you’ll fall hard for this one.

Overall: A beautifully written, emotional love story about forgiveness, resilience, and finding your way back to the person who feels like home. A total must-read for contemporary romance lovers.

ARC review. First off, thank you to R.C. Stephens and Grey’s Promotions for the opportunity to read this first. This was my first book by R.C. Stephens and it will not be my last. I gave this a solid 4 ⭐️s. There were a lot of my favorite things in this book that made it suspenseful, relatable, and intriguing. We got to see grumpy vs sunshine, high school drama, enemies to lovers, hurt and betrayal, found family, and suspense that leaves you wanting more. The family /friend dynamic is good and you can see hints of where this series is going to go. Hurt people really do hurt people and those consequences could be ever lasting unless changes are made. Running from the past is scary but easier when you have people on your side.

If you like:
💖 Small town romance
💖 Enemies to lovers
💖 Romantic suspense
💖 Single mom
💖 Grumpy bar/brewery owner
💖 All the heat and spice

Having read R.C. Stephens Tempting The Goalie, I was introduced to Phoenix and Elyna during that book. These two books are on the same timeline so I do recommend reading both but it is definitely not necessary. If you do read Tempting The Goalie, you will learn more about the supporting characters including Luc and Izzy, their respective siblings who are best friends and dating. You also meet Braden, Elyna's son. He steals hearts.

Phoenix is the oldest of the Thorne siblings. He runs a successful restaurant and brewery in his hometown. When his mother left when he was a teen, he helped his father with his younger siblings. After graduation, he did leave for college and explore Europe but he knew that he was needed in his hometown. He was always broody and serious even in high school. His mother had been best friends with Elyna's mom so their families spent a lot of time together growing up. Elyna and Phoenix were the same age, like Luc and Izzy, but their relationship wasn't friendly.

Elyna had left home after graduation following bad decision after bad decision. She changed after finding out she was expecting Braden but her past didn't stay in the past, especially thanks to her ex. She moved back home, something she swore she would never do to protect herself and her son. Her father had been a functioning alcoholic for as long as she could remember but after her mother died it was so much worse. When her mother died, she had to help her younger brother and she got a job to provide for him. She was forced into a role she wasn't ready for and she lashed out. Now she was determined to do better for her son even if it meant asking two men who despised her for help. Her father for a place to live until she could find somewhere else to live and Phoenix for a job. She was fiercely independent and didn't trust generosity because of potential strings. She wanted to prove that she wasn't the same irresponsible teenager that she was when she left.

Elyna and Phoenix's relationship is so different from their siblings and when Elyna starts working for Phoenix, he watches her like a hawk waiting for her to mess up. She proves him wrong by working hard and showing up for her shifts. She is kind and efficient with the guests and friendly with her coworkers. Even when exhausted and emotionally drained she is there to provide for her son. The tension between the two is obvious from the start but changes over time.

After Luc and Izzy come home for the summer, they convince Elyna that it isn't safe to live with their father. Luc finally realizing that Elyna had protected him from the truth for a very long time. Putting him first like she does with Braden. Izzy also works her magic on Phoenix, suggesting he offer his loft apartment to Elyna. Elyna, Braden, and Luc move into the loft eliminating one major stressor. Her biggest stressor, was the ex she left behind though. Was he really gone or was he tormenting her from afar?

As Phoenix and Elyna grow closer, danger lurks in the shadows. Elyna's ex has made threats and his mother seems to be conspiring with him. Does she really know the truth about her son? Ever the protector, Phoenix enlists his father and brother to help him protect the woman and child, whom he is falling in love with. For once, Elyna is letting go of her independence and allowing Phoenix and his family help. She cannot deny that her old high school feelings were surfacing again. Will Phoenix and Elyna get their happily ever after or will the outside dangers win?

I loved Phoenix and Elyna getting a second chance to right teenage wrongs. Not everyone gets this and we end up living with regrets. As the eldest, they are often the most responsible and independent but they also know how to compromise. I loved watching the little moments between them until they couldn't resist each other. They seemed so explosive when denying what they felt. I really hope that they get the happily ever after that they deserve after everything they were put through. I know that I would be forever watching and waiting for the danger in the shadows to strike again but I hope they learn to shut the fear off. They are meant to be a family, free from the trauma in their pasts.

Wildflower and Whiskey was different from the other books, I have read by this author but I loved it so much. I am excited for the next book in this series. Which brother will be the next to follow his heart?

Than you R.C. Stephens and Grey's Promotions for the ARC! I greatly appreciate the opportunity to review this book!

Tropes:
- Small Town
- Enemies to lovers

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Moderate spice)

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

✨ Summary:

"Wild as a storm. Strong as whiskey. He's everything I should resist - And the only thing I'll ever crave."

Elyna wasn't the best at making good decisions. Proven by the fact she is returning to Val-Du-Lys with her son. Where is his Father? Well....that crashed and burned when she found out she was pregnant and has been just under a complete dumpster fire since. Hence the move back to her small town she ran from years before. Elyna is swallowing her pride, for her son, so he can have a better life. This thought is how she finds herself in the last place in front of the last person she wanted to see again.....In Phoenix Thorne's brewery, just shy of begging for a job.

Phoenix has always been enthralled with Elyna, but past encounters and hurtful words did hurt, despite the statement that "words will never hurt me." He is a good guy and can see she is down on her luck, so he gives her a chance. He can resist Elyna after all since he swore he would never forgive her.

When trouble comes to town Phoenix has the unfamiliar desire to protect Elyna. Now they are neighbors. And co-workers. And they both aren't the people they were in high school.

Stolen glances, brushing of hands, viewing each other for the people they have become, or maybe the people they always were but never let anyone else see, the line starts to blur. Resistance snaps and a stolen heated kiss in the brewery hallway occurs.

Is it the worst thing that could happen or could this be something more?

Elyna's past won't let her go and Phoenix can't loose her again. How could this ever work? Is love enough? Or are secrets determined to destroy them before they ever start.

💫 My Thoughts:

Plot / Storyline: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Enthralling and keeps you turning the page. Romantic suspense is one of my favorite tropes. It gives you the butterflies, but also keeps you guessing, "what next?"

Romance & Chemistry: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Angst, longing, and all the feels. A true second chance romance to say the things they should have said and apologize for what they did.

Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Phoenix is the typical dream of a grumpy, protective, slightly possessive MMC. He surprises you with his gooey inside though :). Elyna is a Mama-bear. She is resilient, tough, and would do anything for her son. She has made mistakes but she is determined to make it right and not disappear in the meantime. I loved her fierceness and ability to be vulnerable.

❤️ What I Loved:

• Slow burn tension was yummy

• Found family for Elyna. She needed it and she formed an army behind her

• Grumpy x sunshine perfection

⚠️ Content Warnings: Explicit sexual content, Emotional abuse, death of a parent, drug/alcohol abuse. As always check your trigger warnings and decide based on your mental health.

Star: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wildflower and Whiskey by R.C. Stephens is an emotional and beautifully written second-chance romance that hits all the right notes, heartache, passion, and the slow burn of love rekindled. Set in the small, evocative town of Val-Du-Lys, this story captures the kind of raw, aching love that feels both impossible and inevitable.

When Elyna returns home with her young son, she’s determined to start fresh and leave her past behind. What she doesn’t expect is to run straight into Phoenix Thorne the one man she swore she’d never face again. Phoenix isn’t just a reminder of heartbreak; he’s the embodiment of every choice she regrets and every feeling she never truly let go of. Working at his brewery and living above his garage forces them into constant proximity, and the tension between them is electric from the start.

R.C. Stephens has a gift for writing broken, complex characters who still find beauty in their scars. Phoenix is everything a second-chance hero should be, gritty, guarded, and unshakably loyal once you earn his heart. Beneath his rough exterior is a man who feels deeply, who’s been burned before, and who’s terrified of being hurt again. And her strong, resilient, and vulnerable in ways she doesn’t always admit, brings the emotional depth and quiet strength that makes the story hit even harder.

Their chemistry is undeniable. Every shared glance and every hesitant touch carries years of unresolved feelings. The push and pull between love and resentment is powerful, and the way Stephens builds their relationship back up through forgiveness, truth, and passion is both believable and deeply satisfying. The tension is perfectly paced, with moments that are tender, fiery, and filled with longing.

But Wildflower and Whiskey isn’t just a romance it’s a story of second chances, redemption, and family. The addition of her son adds warmth and depth, grounding the story in something more than passion. And as secrets unravel and danger creeps closer, the emotional stakes rise even higher, testing the strength of their newfound connection.

With vivid writing, heartfelt emotion, and a perfect blend of heat and heart, this book delivers a love story that feels lived-in and real. It’s about facing the past, forgiving the hurt, and realizing that sometimes love is both the storm and the calm that follows.

Wildflower and Whiskey is a must-read for fans of small-town, second-chance romances with a wounded but fiercely protective hero, a heroine with quiet fire, and a love that burns hotter than whiskey.

Wildflower and Whiskey is the first book in the all new Maple Valley series by R.C. Stephens- where she brings us back north of the border and she brings out all the stops with this one.

This may be the first book in the series but it does stem off of R.C.'s last book in the Riverside U series, Tempting the Goalie- with Luc & Izzy, as their story overlaps with this one with Luc's sister Elyna and Izzy's oldest brother Phoenix. It's not wholly necessary to have read that story before starting this one, but I think that coming in with that side of the story filled in it helps create a whole picture for this one.

Now I've read quite a few of R.C.'s books- and while this one has so much of the writing style that I love from her, it also hits a little different because this book has this added suspense and danger element that I haven't experienced yet from her. And I gotta say, I didn't hate it. Elyna Chabot is a single mom that returns to her small hometown for safety after her baby daddy gets in deep with some bad characters. Only that return home isn't as safe as she would have thought- her alcoholic father has only gotten more belligerent and her son's paternal grandmother is setting off her maternal warning bells. Then there's Phoenix Thorne- he grew up with Elyna as his neighbor, friend and later on semi-tormentor. Phoenix knows that he should keep his distance but something about Elyna still pulls him in and sparks his protective instincts.

I LOVE the push pull between these two. Elyna is stubborn as a mule- determined to provide her son with the kind of life that she wished for while also knowing that putting her trust in anyone but herself is just a recipe for a broken heart. Phoenix isn't much better- the man is grouchy, grumbly and stubborn but he also has such good intentions and he understands Elyna on a level that very few do. While these two may both be incredibly stubborn- they also have off the charts chemistry that sizzled right off the pages. But more than that I love that Phoenix and the rest of the Thorne's become this safe space and home for Elyna and Brayden. The family as a whole is protective over Elyna and her son but Phoenix takes his devotion to the both of them to a whole other level.

It's perfect that there is no third act break up here because the lingering threat of danger hanging around was more than enough to have me glued to the pages as I plowed through this story. I definitely was on edge for the last bit of the story and while thankfully this book does NOT end in any kind of cliffhanger, R.C. does set it up that I think that the second chance brewing for book 2 will also have a bit of this suspense element to it as well. AND I CAN'T WAIT!!

1 6-month-old baby and mother on the run.
Said she wouldn't come back to the town where everything went sideways.
But here she is back home and asking her best friend turned enemy for a job. He gives her a trial run for 1 shift.
While she works he can't keep his eyes off of her.
Every now and again she looks at him or she catches him looking at her. His best friend likes her, but he backs off once he notices the tension and vibe between her and his boss (aka his best friend since they were in their early twenties).
In a small town Val-Du-Lys there is a brewery owner who has a successful restaurant and brewery and is the oldest son of the Throne siblings. Phoenix Throne took over to help his siblings grow up when their mother left and his dad became so focused on work. Phoenix left for college but he explored Europe before he went back to his hometown.
Elyna lost her mother due to a car accident when she was 15 years old. Later she and her brother Luc found out that their mother was having an affair with her son's dad's father and that Phoenix's mother knew and encouraged her to continue with the affair. As soon as graduation was over Elyna left her small town and she made a lot of bad mistakes, but the worst mistake of all was to date and have a son with her mother's partner's son. So Elyna came home and lived with her alcoholic dad even if things at home weren't safe. But through everything that happened her brother started dating the girl he had known since they were in diapers. She started to fall for her boss/friend. Elyna made new friends and heard from a friend who told her the truth about her son's dad. Family and friends stick together no matter what. Whether or not they blood blood-related. When danger came knocking on the town's door Phoenix and his family did everything they could to protect what was theirs. Phoenix did right by Elyna and even though she was still in survival mode he made her feel safe. He was always in love with her. And she also liked him. But since they saw each other after so long they've changed and grown up. She had a son who isn't his by blood, but he adopted him anyway. He wanted her and she wanted him. So will they get together and have a happily ever after?

Elyna & Phoenix ... heartfelt

Welcome to Maple Valley , R.C. Stephens' new series, and book #1 WILDFLOWER AND WHISKEY. If you've read Tempting The Goalie from the Riverside U series then these characters will be familiar, as the two books run on a similar timeline. WILDFLOWER AND WHISKEY is an entertaining single mum, protective hero, hate to love, forced proximity, small town romance which was heartfelt, emotional, and a touch suspenseful.

Single mum Elyna Chabot has returned to her hometown to escape the danger her ex has put jer in. Val-Du-Lys was the last place she wanted to be, it held too many bad memories, bad decisions, pain, and secrets. Elyna is fiercely independent, she needs a job and goes to the last person she wants to for help. Phoenix Thorne is the owner of a successful brewery and restaurant. He and Elyna have a past, she broke his heart when they were teenagers. So the last person he expects to see in his restaurant looking for work is Elyna. They are instantly drawn to each other but try to fight it. When it becomes unsafe for Elyna to continue staying at her childhood home Phoenix offers her a place to stay, igniting a brighter spark betwwen them that they can't ignore. But danger is never far away, will Phoenix be able to keep Elyna and her son safe?

WILDFLOWER AND WHISKEY was such an engaging story. There was the initial slow burn, then the heated passion of a couple rediscovering love. Add in the siblings of both and the humour is perfection. I love that I was kept continually guessing in regards to the suspense and what was going to happen, it lead me to become emotionally invested in Elyna and Phoenxis' story. I have a feeling I know who the next book is about, and I can't wait for that one. WILDFLOWER AND WHISKEY is a recommended read.

📚✨ ARC REVIEW ✨📚
Wildflower and Whiskey by R.C. Stephens
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5 stars)

Thank you, @greyspromo, for the free ARC!

Elyna fled Montreal for her hometown of Val-Du-Lys with her six-month-old son, Braden, after her ex’s gambling debts put them both in danger. She has no money, no home, and no clear plan, but she’s determined to build a safe, happy life for her son.

Phoenix Thorne, the eldest Thorne brother and the son of Elyna’s late mother’s best friend, has always been her secret weakness. There was a spark between them as teens, but a falling out years ago kept their feelings buried. When Phoenix offers her a job at his microbrewery and the loft above his garage, old feelings reignite, hotter than ever.

Just when Elyna and Phoenix begin to lower their walls and let the other in, Elyna's ex starts making veiled threats about seeing Braden. As larger threats close in on the small town of Maple Valley, Phoenix will do anything to protect Elyna and Braden.

I really enjoyed this spicy second-chance romantic suspense. Having read Tempting the Goalie (part of Stephen's Riverside U series) first, I already had a sense of Elyna and Phoenix’s connection, which made their story even more satisfying.

Elyna was such a strong and multifaceted heroine. I loved that she was allowed to be vulnerable and ask for help without losing her independence. She’s resilient, devoted, and fiercely protective of her son.

And Phoenix? Absolute perfection. Rugged, protective, alpha, but also respectful, tender, and emotionally grounded. His devotion to Elyna and Braden melted my heart. Voluntarily putting together a crib? Peak book boyfriend behavior.

If you’re in the mood for a steamy small-town second-chance romance with suspense and heart, this one deserves a spot on your TBR.

A return to the small Canadian town of Val-Du-Lys featuring characters introduced in a previous book and the Maple Valley series opens with Wildflower and Whiskey, a high school enemies to lovers tale with a grumpy/grumpy trope as Elyna Chabot returns home, something she’d sworn never to do but with the safety of her baby son Braden at stake she was out of options. What waited for her at home was an alcoholic father who’d grown steadily worse after the death of her mother. Something that had been a catalyst for the entire family with Elyna going off the rails and hurting with the pain of her lose, deliberately and cruelly struck out at family friend Phoenix Thorne and setting them at odds. But it was Phoenix who offered her a lifeline with a job and when the threats that had caused her to leave the city looked like they had followed her home, he was the first to step up and offer his protection.

Once again, this author has given readers a fantastic story with well-rounded characters and where strong family dynamics were central to the story. Wildflower and Whiskey was a fabulous small-town romance with just the right balance of romance and mystery and suspense. Elyna and Phoenix had a complicated past. Due to the connection between their mothers they’d spent a lot of time together growing up but there was a sense that they’d really liked each other, but after her mother’s death, Elyna had to step up and take responsibility for her younger brother which led to her acting up in front of her friends, something she’d regretted but didn’t know how to fix. Her actions had hurt Phoenix more than she knew but underneath he was just a good guy so when he realised how bad things were at home with her father; he offered her a safe place to live with Braden. And when the threats from her ex’s involvement with organised crime targets her son, he proves the lengths he’s willing to go to protect them.

✨ARC Review✨

Firstly, thank you so much R.C. Stephens and team for the ARC. I tried to finish the book before the release date, but unfortunately wasn't able to do it.. Anyways, now onto the reviewing of the book!

Phoenix and Elyna— The push and pull with these two was a lott!! 🤌🏻💜 The friends to enemies, to enemies to friends to lovers, was amazing!! 💜

» Now, the reason it wasn't a 5 star or even 4 star for me was because, I found the story repeating a lot, like you talk about one thing in a paragraph, then again repeat the same thing again with a little more detail in the next..
» There also were typos, now idk if it was only for the arc readers or its there for the normal readers too..
» Phoenix and Elyna had a lot of potential but somewhere down the line it fizzles out..
» Braden wasn't shown properly, like he was there, here and there in the scenes but wasn't enough.. His 1st birthday was pretty mellow too but that's ok, what kinda bothered me was he was 1 year old and he never said mama? or even dada? just da? if he was having slow speech development that should've been talked about uk..
» Ever since Luc goes back after the summers, he was never mentioned. No mention her dad too.
» The thriller/mystery part — where Riley or whoever was after them— it could've been done better.. the build up and execution could've been more interesting and not just repeated dialogues and themes..
» The ending was nice but left me unsatisfied somewhat..

So with all that done, It was a nice read, would've been a short binge read too but not if you have things to do in the middle, like i had xp
Honestly, looking forward for Harmony and Eric's story! 💜 hope that hits all the marks!! 💜

I am loving this series!

Phoenix Thorne is her best friend's older brother and they grew up together. When they were young, their mothers were best friends, so they were constantly thrown into each other’s lives, sharing dinners, holidays, and awkward silences. Then everything changed: Elyna lost her mother, and not long after, Phoenix’s mother abandoned his family — leaving behind a trail of grief and resentment. Back in high school, Elyna wasn’t just indifferent to Phoenix… she was downright mean. Sharp words, cold shoulders, and a superiority complex that masked her own insecurities and sadness.
Elyna never thought she'd be back in Val-Du-Lys, let alone living above Phoenix’s garage. — and now, her new boss, her reluctant savior, and the man who makes her pulse race every time he walks into the room.

Phoenix isn’t the same either. The boy whose mother vanished after Elyna’s own mother died has grown into a guarded, moody grump with secrets behind his eyes. He remembers Elyna as the wild girl who ran off to Montreal chasing chaos — and came back with a baby and a storm in her wake.

Elyna needs this job. She needs this second chance. But Phoenix makes it clear: he doesn’t do charity, and she has to pull her weight. Still, he can’t ignore the way she’s changed — the fire in her eyes, the fierce love she has for her son, the way she challenges him without even trying.

Living in such close quarters, the tension between them simmers. But danger still lurks in Montreal, and Elyna’s past isn’t done with her yet.

Phoenix wants to protect her — even if he won’t admit it. Elyna wants to prove she’s not the girl he remembers. And somewhere between the drama of family, the shadows of their pasts, and the undeniable pull between them, they might just find something worth fighting for.

Wildflower and Whiskey is the first story in the Maple Valley series. It is a wonderfully well-written and emotional story. I loved it so much more than I thought it would.

Phoenix and Elyna knew each other in school. Their moms were best friends before Elyna's mother died. Years later Phoenix owns and runs a successful restaurant and brewery. He has younger siblings and helped with them when their mother left when they were younger. He is a very serious person and often considered grumpy. Elyna left home after graduating from high school. She made a decision to be with a man and it resulted in her getting pregnant. He ran off so she was forced to be a single mom to her son. She is now coming back home to stay with her father. She wants to be a better person for her son. Since the town is small she doesn't have a lot of work places to choose from so she decides to try to work at the restaurant Phoenix owns. She doesn't want to see him again but she needs a job.

When Phoenix and Elyna see each other again after all these years, there is instant chemistry. He decides to give her a chance and lets her come work for him. As they get to know each other again he sees how hard she works and raises her son. When he sees that her father is abusive to her and her son, he gets her to move into his loft apartment. The more time they spend together the more their chemistry sizzles.

I loved how good Phoenix was with Elyna and her son. He showed her how good a man can treat a woman and her child. He was a great person. I loved how Elyna was so strong even after all she had been through with her parents and being a single mom. Absolutely loved their story. I look forward to the next one.

Reasons you will love this story:
* Small town
* Single mom
* Slow burn
* Second chance
* Forced proximity

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy for an honest review.

Wildflower & Whiskey by R.C. Stephens is a contemporary romantic suspense novel, the 1st book in the Maple Valley series. Thank you to R.C. Stephens and Grey’s Promotion for the opportunity to ARC read and review in exchange for my honest opinions.

This book can be described as:

🌸 Small Town Romance
🌸 Romantic Suspense
🌸 Enemies to Lovers
🌸 Forced Proximity
🌸 It’s Alwsys Been You
🌸 Single Mom
🌸 NO 3rd-Act Breakup

My honest opinions:

First, I enjoyed the characters in this story very much. The FMC was a strong, independent single mother who needed a fresh start and owns up to her mistakes as a way of moving on. The MMC was the perfect amount of protective, charming and turned up the heat in the spicy scenes. Speaking of which… Their chemistry was off the charts! The spice, and there was a lot of it, was exquisite. Not too descriptive but still well written and fit perfectly within the plot.

Next, the tension during the suspense telling portion of the book really made me anticipate the climax of the story, but it did stretch out a bit too much and became slightly repetitive. But in the end the thrills and suspense wrapped up the storyline perfectly.

In addition, I loved all the side characters. They added just the right amount of side plot and foreshadowed a good base for a continuation of the series! I love when I can kind of guess who might get a book or who might be the next couple.

Finally, Romantic Suspense is a new-to-me genre this year and this is the first book by this author that I have ever read. It was very well written, full of drama, tension, suspense and spice! I really enjoyed this book and I’m also looking forward to the next book in the series. I will definitely be adding more R.C. Stephens books to my TBR. Overall I give it 4 stars.

Wildflower and Whiskey is RC Stephens’s first book in her romantic suspense Maple Valley series featuring the Throne brothers. We were introduced to the Throne brothers and the town of Val-Du-Lys in Tempting the Goalie (Riverside U series book 5) because Izzy is a Throne and Elyna is Luc’s older sister.

Elyna is a single mom and leaves Montreal after her son’s father tells her it’s not safe for them there so she packs up and heads back to the one place she never wanted to return to, her father’s house. It’s not safe either for her and her son because of her father’s drinking but Elyna is determined to stand on her own and asks the one person she never thought she would for a job at the brewery, Phoenix Throne.

After a falling out in high school, Phoenix and Elyna tended to stay away from each other but now they are working together and Elyna has moved into Phoenix’s loft apartment meaning they are constantly in each other’s orbit and feelings they thought were buried bubble to the surface. The chemistry between them is deep and unlike anything they have ever experienced before and Phoenix lets Elyna know early on that she and her son were the most important people in his life and that he would do anything for them. Elyna was hesitant to give into her feelings for Phoenix but she fell easily for him watching him interact with her son so easy and naturally.

I’m excited for this series and loved how it tied into the last book in her Riverside U series. I’m also a huge fan of romantic suspense so I’m really excited where this series is headed especially after what happened in this book and I’m interested in what happened between Harmony and Eric.

Thank you @rc_stephens_author and @greyspromo for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.

Something new for me from R.C. Stephens as I have been a fan of her hockey books for some time. This is a small town romance with a LOT of suspense.
Elyna is returning to her hometown with baby Braden after her baby daddy got into some gambling trouble in Montreal and it was no longer safe to stay there. And I use baby daddy term loosely as it seems that he has not done anything to support or care for Elyna and Braden since she first got pregnant. Back in her hometown, Elyna is looking for work and when her childhood "enemy" Phoenix offers her a server job at his brewery/restaurant, she takes it. We quickly find that Elyna and Phoenix are not actually enemies at all since they are both drawn to each other, but hesitant based on their relationship many years ago.
When it's clear that living with her alcoholic father is not safe, Elyna agrees to move into a loft apartment over Phoenix's garage....here we go!
Soon Phoenix is bringing her dinner and spending time with her and Braden. Elyna sees a softer side of Phoenix as he is quick to engage with the baby and offers her help she has never gotten.
Remember that gambling trouble? Well, it has followed Elyna as the people hoping to collect from her ex, have now put their sights on her.
The suspense of these people takes up a good chunk of the last part of the book and although I was intrigued, I would have preferred more of the love story. Even so, the character building was excellent and you had a front row seat to Phoenix and Elyna falling in love.

Book Trope: Enemies to lovers. Grumpy vs Sunshine.

Phoenix Thorne owns and runs Maple Valley brewery. The family has the orchards and shops also on their property that needs looking after. Usually his other siblings and father run the orchard. Phoenix went to college for 1 year, but then his dad needed him back home to help with the kids and the business.

Elyna has a younger brother Luc Chabot who we met in Tempting the Goalie. Luc is dating Phoenix's younger sister - Izzy who has always been great with Elyna and suggested she go for a job at the brewery. Elyna has returned to their hometown Val-Du-Lys in Canada. She has a 6 month old baby boy, and no where else to live, so they are back living in her childhood home with her aloholic father. Elyna applies for a job at Maple Valley brewery with Phoenix as her boss.

Phoenix and Elyna grew up together as their mom's were best friends, and they lived in the same neighborhood growing up. Phoenix and Elyna didn't have the same friend group in high school. They didn't even acknolwedge each other during school even though they were usually together on the weekends with family dinners and hanging out.

Now that they are working together can Phoenix actually be nice to Elyna? Or can he only glare at her from across the room? Elyna isn't sure what Phoenix wants from her. She knows she can work for him. But, can she be alone with him without the daggers getting thrown at her?

Thank you to R.C. Stephens and Grey's Promotions for the free ARC book copy. I am freely leaving a honest book review.

When R.C. Stephens launches a new series, she doesn’t just start a story—she builds a world that lingers long after the last page. Wildflower and Whiskey, the first book in her brand-new Maple Valley series, is proof of that. It’s heartwarming, deeply emotional, and beautifully layered—the kind of small-town romance that feels both comforting and utterly addictive.

From the very first chapter, Stephens introduces us to Elyna—a resilient, single mother doing everything she can to protect her child. Returning to her hometown of Val-Du-Lys, a place she once swore she’d never see again, she carries both her baby and a past full of pain and secrets. With danger following close behind, all she wants is a fresh start—but what she finds is so much more.

Phoenix Thorne has never forgotten the girl who once broke his heart. When Elyna reappears in his life, older, guarded, and carrying a child, he knows he should keep his distance. But the woman she’s become draws him in despite the past. Offering her a job and a place to stay feels like the right thing to do—until the old sparks between them ignite into something far more powerful.

Wildflower and Whiskey is a stunning blend of second chances, slow-burn passion, and subtle suspense. It’s a story about redemption, forgiveness, and the kind of love that refuses to fade no matter how much time or pain stands in its way. And if this first book is anything to go by, the Maple Valley series is going to be one unforgettable journey.

𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐲 is the first book in the new Maple Valley series by R.C. Stephens, featuring an entertaining single mom, enemies to lovers romance for Elyna and Phoenix with a side of suspense. I’ve enjoyed this author’s hockey romances for a long time, but this new small town direction also sucked me in with a mix of emotional drama, secrets, a heroine in danger, and a hate to love dynamic that delivers some angst and chemistry backed by family history and an undeniable connection. Grief and immaturity made high school the wrong time for Elyna and Phoenix to explore their feelings, but when she comes home a decade later with a baby in tow in need of a job, Phoenix steps up to help her, despite the hurt from the past. I loved the momentum of that angsty pull between them, and the protective nature in Phoenix that bubbled up as danger started to pop up. The world building was great, especially the banter between the siblings and friends. I also loved the sweet moments with baby Braden! Talk about swoon worthy, picturing Phoenix bonding with that baby boy!😍 The suspense spect and plot twists were intriguing and kept me interested until the very end! I can’t wait to see where the series goes next!

I received a free ARC, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

A new series, and I love what I have read so far. We are in a small town of Val-Du-Lys for Elyna and Phoenix’s story.

Phoenix is the oldest of the Thorne siblings, and Elyna is the sister of Luc. Their mothers were the best of friends, and after the death of Elyna’s mom, Phoenix’s mother takes off. This event is significant in both families as Phoenix takes off for Europe and Elyna begins a string of bad decisions.
Elyna is home now with her 6 mo. old son in tow. Phoenix is the owner of the bar/brewery in town, and quite successful. She will be living with her father and hopes Phoenix will give her a job.

Elyn has changed, especially now that she is a mother, but her past has come back to visit. Her independence says she can handle it, but she needs to let Phoenix in. She also needs to trust him. She does work hard for Phoenix, she is a great mom, but it is taking a toll on her body and emotional health. Phoenix wants to protect her.

As these two grow closer, the danger is lurking.

Phoenix and Elyna talk about their past, their high school selves and clear the air. Is this the first step to their second chance?

I love this book and am looking forward to the next brother to fall.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

Phoenix and Elyna

After her mother died, Elyna didn’t know how to process her grief. She had an alcoholic father and a younger brother to take care of. She did some things she was not proud of. Her treatment of Phoenix was at the top of her list. Their past complicated. They practically grew up together but were never close like their siblings. Miscommunications and teenage immaturity played a big part of their relationship.

Now she is back either a baby “that isn’t his”.

Both characters have baggage and they have to deal with the consequences of their past.
Elyna grew from the pick me girl in high school to a fiercely independent single mom. Her trust issues are strong. She has a small circle of people that are supportive.
Phoenix is closed off to most people. He has a big heart. He has always had feelings for Elyna. When she comes back he finds himself taking on the protector role for her and her son.

The story has suspense, small town secrets and spice. The supporting characters are great additions to the story. Elyna finds that family is not always blood. The support she received from the beginning was awesome, they also help her and Phoenix get out their own way to get their HEA.

We heard about Elyna in Tempting the Goalie. She is the sister of Luc. She has also had a hard time lately. The father of her son told her to leave as he was a gambler, and some terrible people were after him.

So, she moves home and has to go and ask the one person that hates her for a job.

Phoenix Thorne has a past with Elyna that was okay up until it wasn’t. He left home and travelled. But his back home now, has his own restaurant and just offered the one woman who he had a thing for a job. And no matter how he wanted to stay away from her, seeing her with her son, all he wants to do is protect them.

And he certainly stepped up when trouble followed Elyna home, and it seems she wasn’t done with her ex yet or he wasn't done with her…

I loved Elyna. She had a tough childhood, and it seemed like it didn’t get better, but she was strong and did everything to make a new life for her and her son. Phoenix was so sweet with little Braden that you couldn’t help fall in love with him. I liked that the author didn’t drag out their animosity towards each other for long.

Loved the romance, the laughter, the angst and the suspense and the amazing Thorne men who all rallied around Elyna and her son 😊. I am looking forward to the next book in this new series 😊

Wildflower and Whiskey is an enemies to lovers, small town romance that is action packed.

Elyna, a single mum, has made the brave decision to return to Val-Du-Lys, Maple Valley, to create a safe and nurturing environment for her six month-old son, Braden, and start anew. Despite facing challenges and making decisions based on emotions in the past, Elyna is determined to make a positive change for herself and her baby boy. Even if that means swallowing her own pride and asking Phoenix Thorne for a favour.

Phoenix Thorne owns and operates Maple Valley Brewery & Restaurant, demonstrating his strong work ethic and dedication to his business. As the eldest of five children, he has a close bond with his siblings and also played a supportive role in helping his single father with the responsibilities of raising the younger siblings. Despite being a brooding workaholic, Phoenix's natural protective instincts make him a caring and responsible individual.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, particularly the way the relationships evolved between Elyna and Phoenix, as well as how Phoenix's demeanor softened only towards Braden and Elyna, and the Thorne's warm welcome of Elyna back into their lives.

I highly recommend and eagerly anticipate reading more from the Maple Valley Series🤞

I loved this book so much!

This is the first I read by the author but now I’m so invested and I need more! Elyna and Phoenix’s story was full of love and angst and I loved every second of it, I loved their love story, the depth of their past, how they were hurting so much when they were young, especially Elyna, and how they managed to find each other again, let go the past and love each other the right way after all that time 🥹❤️‍🩹

I loved how resilient Elyna is, oh god she was a kid when she had to step up for her little brother and deal with her alcoholic dad after she lost her mom, she was hurting and she didn’t know how to deal with all those feelings and Phoenix was there, even she hurt him, he never stopped loving her and caring for her, so of course he was there the moment she was back either her baby needing a job and a place to stay and I was loving every second of it 🥹❤️

Phoenix is just a loving protective man, he’s grumpy but when it comes to Elyna and Braden he’s the most sweet caring man in the world and he was willing to do anything and everything to keep them safe ❤️

I loved all the suspense plot and honestly I cannot wait for Harmony and Eric’s book 🙂‍↔️

Elyna, a single mom back in her hometown for certain reasons
Phoenix, closed off until she back back with her son

Elyna, Phoenix and their romance with suspense

This romance follows Elyna and Phoenix and is the first in a new series that starts with a boom.
Phoenix and Elyna have known each other since they were kids, but didn’t get along. Both had some tragedies in their pasts that had an impact on their actions.
Now, years later, Elyna is back in her hometown with her toddler son. But she has certain reasons and secrets that follow her.
Elyna needs help to start over again. Reluctantly Phoenix steps in and slowly realises that she is not who she once was.
Both are drawn to each other but are also hesitant.
A romance with suspense, emotions and a second chance at love and with each other begins.
Wonderful ride that has it all. And a family who is there for one another, no questions asked.

Wildflower and Whiskey is an entertaining, enemies to lovers. This is the first book in the Maple Valley series.
Elyna and Phoenix has such a great story. They were friends, undercover. Due to her family life, she spent a lot of time with his family growing up and hanging out with him at his home, but at school, she acted like she didn't know him. One day at school, she sort of, embarrasses him in front of everyone and so begins there story of enemies. They drift apart but years later, Elyna returns to town with her baby in tow, needing a job and place to stay. Her son's father, caught up in some bad business owing some people a lot of money. Phoenix gives her chance working in his brewery and gives her a place to stay, ( a loft on his property). But as he notices the changes motherhood has brought about in Elyna, he feels more and more drawn to her.
I loved the tension to attraction between them. I think they work so well as a couple and enjoyed seeing Phoenix step into the role of caring for Elyna and her son. When Elyna's ex puts her and her sons' life at risk, Phoenix and his entire family steps up to protect them. It was so heartwarming.
I really enjoyed this story. I can't wait to see what's next in the series. This was a great start to the series.

I want to live in a town like Val-Du-Lys!

Elyna Chabot never intended to return to Val-Du-Lys after graduating high school but now she was coming back with her son Braden because they were in danger. The best job was working for Phoenix Thorne as a waitress for his family’s brewery but there were issues because there was a history between their families and she wasn’t the nicest to Phoenix in high school. Things changed when she moved with Braden to the apartment above his garage.

Now, they had to work through their past and a hopeful future until danger to Elyna and Braden rears its ugly head with some serious romantic suspense

I really liked the small town feel of Val-Du-Lys where Elyna and Braden make a family with Phoenix and the rest of the Thorne family. Now I want to read about the rest of the Thorne family.

P.S. If you want to read more about Luc Chabot and Isabelle Thorne, their book is Tempting The Goalie by R.C. Stephens (Riverside U).

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author and Grey's Promotions. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the first book in a new series, Maple Valley. This one leaps right into all the suspense you can handle. I am here for it.

The book is full of suspense, second chance, and forgiveness. Elena, a single mom returns to her hometown and has to ask for a job for the one person she never wanted to hurt, Phoenix. She was the mean girl in high school that due to her own hurt lashed out and hurt the one person she cared about back then. Phoenix can’t help but remember that hurt while trying to keep his growing feelings at bay.

This book gave me a love story that felt raw and lived in. Stephens doesn’t shy away from
the hurt and trust challenges this couple faces. I appreciated that they had to work for their relationship and didn’t just fall in right away. Love can be turbulent at times and having a strong partner is the key to weathering the storm and Stephens wrote this so well.

The book had plenty of suspense and just enough romance and spice to keep me reading to find out what happens next. I think this book was a great start to an exciting new series and I can’t wait to see where this series goes.
