Sunshine and Sins

Rate this book
Some people are made of light.
Others are made of shadows.

I have always been both sunshine and sin, and I was never meant to outrun the darkness I was born into.

I didn't return to Val-Du-Lys because it was safe. I came back because it was the only place my heart still recognized, a quiet town holding memories I never learned how to leave behind.

Small towns don't forget. Not the past. Not secrets. And not the boy I loved before I understood how dangerous love could be.

Eric Thorne.

We were never supposed to exist in the same world. The police director’s son and the daughter of a man everyone feared. What began in secret turned into scandal, and I learned quickly that loving him meant putting him in danger.

So I left the moment high school ended, believing distance was the only way to protect him from the life my father was pulling me into.

Years later, I'm back.

As encrypted messages begin appearing again, ones only someone from my past should know, and I realize someone is watching my every move, Eric is the one who steps closer, steady and unshaken, even when I try to push him away.

The history between us still aches.
The love never faded.

In a town where shadows return without warning, he reaches for me anyway.

This time, choosing him might expose everything I ran from, but loving him has never felt more worth the risk.

thank you to love notes pr for the arc! I was expecting a lot more from this book 😭 the characters were so cute together — harmony and Eric are MADE for each other but the plot and the story itself fell flat, it dragged on A LOT

This is the second book in this impressive series, and this is Eric and Harmony’s story.
Eric is the son of the chief of police, while Harmony is the daughter of the man everyone fears. Harmony leaves town straight after graduation, breaking both her and Eric’s hearts, but she left to keep him out of danger, Years later Harmony returns to Val-Du-Lys, the place she swore she would never return to, and she knows she needs to face her past. Harmony starts receiving encrypted messages again. Can she expose the person responsible?
This is a well written easy to read story, with found family, friendships, emotions, heartbreak, angst, secrets, scandal, suspense, action, danger, intrigue, tension, opposites attract, taking chances, forced proximity, second chances, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, heartfelt, twisted, and unpredictable, small-town romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Sunshine & Sins is the perfect mix of sweet and wicked—light on the surface, sinful underneath. The chemistry is instant, the tension stays deliciously tight, and the emotional pull sneaks up on you when you least expect it. It’s flirty, spicy, and bingeable, with just enough grit to make the swoon feel earned. Their past history makes it an interesting push/pull. The fight they both have for their own reasons to be together and stay apart keeps the pages turning. I loved the first book and this one is no different! I’m invested in the series.

Star: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sunshine and Sins by R.C. Stephens, the second book in the Maple Valley Series, deepens the emotional landscape established in the first instalment and proves that returning home can be far more dangerous than leaving. This is a story steeped in atmosphere, where love, guilt, and legacy are tightly interwoven, and where the past refuses to stay buried. R.C. Stephens leans into a reflective, almost confessional narrative voice that pulls the reader directly into Harmony’s inner world, a place where light and darkness coexist in constant tension.

Eric’s return to Val-Du-Lys is not framed as a hopeful homecoming but as an unavoidable reckoning. The town feels watchful, intimate, and claustrophobic, a place that remembers every mistake and whispers about them long after they have supposedly faded. R.C. Stephens captures the emotional reality of small-town memory beautifully, showing how places can hold onto versions of us we thought we had outgrown. The sense of being known too well adds weight to every interaction and makes Harmony’s vulnerability feel raw and authentic.

At the centre of the novel is her relationship with Eric Thorne, a love shaped as much by fear as by devotion. Their connection is not rekindled through grand gestures but through proximity, shared silence, and the undeniable pull of unfinished feelings. Eric is written as calm and resolute, a counterbalance to Harmony’s guarded, self-blaming nature. His willingness to step closer, even when he understands the risks, gives their relationship emotional gravity. This is not a romance built on fantasy but on choice, patience, and the quiet bravery of staying when leaving would be easier.

The novel’s tension is heightened by the reappearance of encrypted messages and the unsettling sense that someone from the past is watching. These elements add a layer of suspense without overpowering the emotional core of the story. Instead, they reflect Harmony’s internal state, her fear that the life she tried to escape is still reaching for her. R.C. Stephens handles this balance well, allowing the mystery to enhance rather than distract from the themes of identity and consequence.

What makes Sunshine and Sins particularly compelling is its refusal to paint its characters purely good or bad. Harmony’s struggle with her father’s legacy and her own moral ambiguity is handled with nuance, reinforcing the idea that loving someone does not erase the shadows we carry. The title itself feels deeply earned by the end, as the story repeatedly asks whether love can survive when it is forced to exist alongside fear, danger, and long-held secrets.

This is a slow, emotionally rich novel that rewards patience and attentiveness. Readers who appreciate character-driven storytelling, second-chance romance, and small-town settings heavy with mood and memory will find a lot to love here. Sunshine and Sins is ultimately a story about choosing connection over isolation and accepting that being made of both light and darkness does not mean you are broken. It means you are human.

ARC Review

✨ Description

Sunshine and Sins is a second-chance romance set in a small town shadowed by crime and consequence. Harmony, the daughter of a professional criminal, once chose to walk away from her family’s dangerous life, even if it meant betraying them. Years later, she returns to her hometown hoping for something quieter, working in a flower shop across the street from a bakery owned by Eric Thorne, the boy she once shared stolen moments with despite their families being on opposite sides of the law. As old wounds resurface and past secrets threaten her fragile peace, Harmony must decide whether she can truly leave her history behind, or if love can exist in the space between sunshine and sins.

💬 Review (Spoilers Ahead)

There’s a lot to love about this story, especially the emotional foundation. The premise itself is compelling; a crime lord’s daughter and the police chief’s son finding their way back to each other years later. The flashbacks to Harmony and Eric at seventeen were some of my favourite parts of the book. Those scenes felt intense, vulnerable, and charged with the kind of tension that makes second-chance romances so satisfying.

Eric was a standout for me. He’s steady, patient, and grounded in a way that feels comforting. His life at the bakery and orchard, his involvement with his family and community; it all creates this warm, safe environment that contrasts beautifully with Harmony’s chaotic upbringing. The Thorne family dynamic was particularly lovely, and it truly felt like the family Harmony deserved all along.

Harmony herself carries a lot of emotional weight, and while her inner dialogue sometimes felt repetitive, it’s clear that her hesitation and self-doubt stem from genuine trauma and fear. I think the story shines most when it leans into that emotional intensity, particularly in the opening chapters and the final stretch of the book. The last 100 pages especially brought the tension and momentum I’d been hoping for, and the suspense added an exciting layer that really elevated the ending.

The middle portion did slow down a little for me, and I found myself wishing some conversations had been tightened to keep the pacing consistent. For this to have been a five-star read, I would have loved a bit more emotional depth in the present-day narration and a slightly more expanded ending to fully sit in the resolution.

Overall, Sunshine and Sins delivers a heartfelt second-chance romance with a strong emotional core and a satisfying happily ever after. The beginning and ending were highlights for me, and I’m glad Harmony ultimately found the peace and love she was searching for.

⭐ Rating: 3.5/5
🌶 Spice: 2.5/5 — emotional intimacy with some heat
💔 Tropes: Second chance • Small town romance • Opposites on either side of the law • Crime family drama • Found family
✨ Vibe: Soft, slow-burning small-town romance with bursts of late-game suspense

Sunshine and Sins by RC Stephens is a small-town second chance romance with a strong suspense element that keeps you turning the pages.

Eric, one of the Thorne brothers and the police director’s son, is the steady heart of Val-du-Lys. Between running two bakeries, helping keep the orchard going, and volunteering as a firefighter, he’s deeply rooted in the town and his family.

Harmony couldn’t be more different. She’s the daughter of a powerful crime boss, but she’s always wanted nothing to do with that life. After graduating, she runs away and eventually gives the police evidence that puts her father behind bars. Eight years later, she returns home, hoping for a fresh start. Living above Sandy’s flower shop, Harmony tries to rebuild her life quietly, until she finds herself watching Eric across the street every day, the boy she once loved and left without goodbye.

The slow rebuild between Eric and Harmony feels real and emotional. There’s history, hurt, and longing, and it takes time for them to find their way back to each other. But just as things begin to soften, the danger returns. Harmony’s brother is now running the family business, and her past refuses to stay buried. Threats, strange occurrences, and a constant sense of unease add a strong suspense layer that keeps the tension high.

Eric’s protectiveness and the warmth of the Thorne family really stand out. Watching Harmony slowly find safety and belonging with them was one of my favourite parts. The chemistry between Eric and Harmony builds naturally, and once it ignites, it’s impossible not to root for them.

And I have to mention Asher, the laid-back brother completely stole scenes for me. I’m already excited for his book!

This story starts grounded in everyday life but quickly ramps up into a gripping mix of romance, danger, and family bonds. If you love small-town romances with second chances, protective heroes, and suspense threaded throughout, this one is definitely worth picking up

Thank you Grey's Promo and R.C. Stephens for providing me with this ARC for an honest review.

Star ranking: 3.5
Spice level: 1 chili pepper

This story picks up right where the first Maple Valley Book 1 (Wildflowers and Whiskey) ends with focus on our new couple: Harmony (FMC) and Eric (MMC). 8 years prior, they were a couple until Harmony suddenly leaves town with Eric wondering why. Harmony, striving to separate herself from her criminal family, comes back into town to try to have a normal life. But as fate would have it, her past is not done with her and the bond they had is still alive, just buried under grief.

I enjoyed this story more so than the first book in this series. Eric and Harmony's chemistry was very well written and I felt connected to them. Eric's character was the baker, fireman/volunteer and Maple Valley orchard maintenance brother of the Thorne family.... and just swoon worthy. He is everything you want in a cozy MMC. Harmony's character I could relate to with her never giving up attitude and being resilient/tough. There, however, was a lot of repeated self doubt from the FMC, so much so that multiple chapters could have been taken out from how repetitive it was. Eric would tell her he was there for her, she would doubt it then she lie knowing he could see right through it. He would then call her out and she would say she trusted him and wouldn't do it again....then this cycle would repeat. This story could have been condensed and still provided the same message. I liked the thriller/stalker aspect of this plot and thought majority of it was done well besides the end when Ravenhill is captured....like how? He was a complete bad a** hacker, fighter, stalker and took on Asher, one of MMC's brother who is a MMA fighter, like it was nothing but he all of a sudden is captured with no explanation as to how it happened? Point being, this ending could have been done better.

Overall, it was a good story and cannot wait to rejoin these characters for Asher's story in Book 3.

The second book in the Maple Valley series follows Harmony Bellerose as she returns to the small town of Val-Du-Lys, the home she had fled as soon as she could. Her father once ran the local criminal network, and Harmony had felt herself being pulled into that dangerous world. Leaving was the only way she knew to escape, even though it meant breaking her heart and walking away from the only person she’d ever loved - Eric Thorne. She never imagined she’d return, but years later, with her father in prison and his empire supposedly in ruins, memories of the boy she left behind draw her back home. But in Val-Du-Lys, the past is never truly laid to rest.

For me, this novel strikes the perfect balance between romance, and suspense. With well-developed characters and strong family dynamics, Sunshine and Sins is a fantastic addition to what’s shaping up to be a compelling series. Harmony and Eric’s relationship carries a strong sense of the forbidden. She’s the daughter of a crime boss, and he’s the police chief’s son, with history between them layered with hurt and sacrifice. Harmony knew leaving would break his heart, but she also believed it was the only way to protect him. If she’d stayed, she would never have escaped her family and the fiercely protective Eric, would never have walked away from her which could’ve led to him pulled into her family’s chaos. No matter how he feels about her return, when Harmony becomes the target of a stalker, Eric is determined to protect here and refuses to stand by while she’s in danger, no matter how hard she tries to push him away. The slow burn rekindling of their relationship filled with unresolved angst and simmering chemistry, unfolds against an undercurrent of menace which keeps the tension high. Adding another emotional aspect is the judgment of the town as Harmony is forced to face condemnation from people who don’t know the role she played in bringing her father down.

Returning home shouldn't be dangerous

If you Love:

✅ A good slow burn
✅ Second Chances
✅ Forced Proximity
✅ Found Family
✅ A strong heroine
✅ A protective hero
✅ Mystery & Suspense

in a small town romance, then SUNSHINE & SINS, Maple Valley #2, is the book for you. R.C. Stephens had me transfixed, glued to the edge of my seat, I didn't want to stop reading. This is not your regular romance, it had twists and truns, angst, tension, suspense (oh the suspense, but not a lot of spice (it didn't need it).

After an eight year absence Harmony Bellerose decided it was time to return home to the town she ran from. The town where her family's past will not make her feel welcome. Eric Thorne was the boy she left behind, the one who she wanted to keep safe from her father's dark world. Reuniting isn't easy, old feelings are still there, but so is danger.

Harmony was such a strong, independent woman, not wanting to be defined by her past, yet needing to resolve it. Escaping it is not easy, especially when it comes back to haunt her, bringing with it a deep fear. Eric is her rock, he's calm, patient and will do anything to protect her, even when she tries to push him away. Will Harmony be able to keep the secrets she holds close? Will Eric and the Thorne family be able to protect Harmony?

R.C. Stephens' storytelling was simply superb. A compelling read which is filled with emotions that are beautifully written. Harmony's journey t peace and contentment stole my heart with everything she was forced to endure. Eric was such a sweetheart, tender yet protective. The Thorne men and Sandy ... I just want to be a part of their family. SUNSHINE & SINS is an unforgettable story, a top read for 2026.

Second chances, buried secrets, and a love that was never truly extinguished — Sunshine and Sins takes us back to Maple Valley in the most emotional way.

Are you ready to step back into R.C. Stephens’ Maple Valley? Because I absolutely was.

Sunshine and Sins, the second book in the series, delivers a deeply moving second-chance romance wrapped in a subtle thread of suspense that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

Harmony never planned to return to Val-Du-Lys. But life has a way of pulling you back to the places you swore you’d never revisit. She describes herself perfectly: “I have always been both sunshine and sin, and I was never meant to outrun the darkness I was born into.” That line alone tells you everything about the weight she carries.

Coming home means facing her past — and Eric Thorne.

Eight years ago, they were teenagers hopelessly in love. She broke his heart… and her own in the process. But this wasn’t just young love gone wrong. Harmony was the daughter of the man everyone feared. Eric was the son of the police chief. Their families were on opposite sides of a divide that made their relationship feel doomed from the start. It was disaster written all over it.

Now older, wiser, and still carrying scars, their reunion is everything a slow-burn romance should be. The tension. The longing. The unresolved hurt. Every glance and every conversation simmers with what was left unsaid.

R.C. Stephens beautifully balances emotional depth with romantic intensity. The suspense element adds just enough edge to keep the pages turning, while the heart of the story remains firmly rooted in forgiveness, growth, and the kind of love that refuses to fade.

If you adore angsty second-chance romance, small-town tension, and a hero who never truly stopped loving his girl, Sunshine and Sins is a must-read.

Maple Valley just keeps getting better — and I’m already desperate for more.

I loved Harmony and Eric. Their interactions and the progression of their love story was amazing. I loved how Eric's family embraced Harmony as one if their own even though she was the daughter of a criminal. They treated her with respect and had had back from the moment she returned to town. They protected her from the townspeople, her family, outside threats, and herself. Even after breaking both their hearts, as teenagers, the love se shared with Eric was still there and it refused to stay buried. If anything it grew brighter and stronger over time, refusing to be snuffed out by the dangerous games someone was playing.

The web of lies and deceit and the slew of unsolved crimes in this sleepy little town are slowly unravelling but after this book we are still left with more questions than answers. Who is Ravenhill? What happened to Marcel? What happened to Oliver? Is Nico really in charge or a puppet? What happened to Eric's Mom? Was Harmony's mom death really an accident meant for her father? With two brothers left hopefully these questions will be answered before this series ends.

Even though I loved Harmony and Eric, I rated this book only four stars because, in my opinion, the storyline drug very slowly and it felt lost at times. The ending also seemed rushed and unfinished. That could be because the answers will come in future books but it didn't seem to have the natural ending Wildflower and Whiskey did, even though we knew that more if the story would unfold in future books.

I adore R.C. Stephens writing and cannot wait for the next installment. Thank you so much for the Advanced Readers Copy and the opportunity to review!

R.C. Stephens is back with the second book in her Maple Valley series and the suspense is strong with this one!

Sunshine and Sins brings us back to Vas-Du-Lys for Eric and Harmony's second chance- you know once they get past pretending like the other doesn't exist. This story builds upon some plots started in Wildflower & Whiskey- so I definitely do suggest reading that book first. Harmony has finally returned home after helping put her crime boss of a father behind bars- only she still feels unwanted and unwelcome in her hometown. Also adding to her discomfort? The one she left behind- Eric Thorne- son of was is essentially the police chief. What wasn't left behind? All the memories and feelings that each of them have toward each other, even if Eric is trying his hardest to avoid revisiting that road again.

But like every crime lords daughter has to expect after "turning" on her family- someone is threatening her safety and that just kick-starts all of Eric's protective instincts into high gear and all those old feelings come right along for the ride.

3.5 ⭐

I have some mixed feelings for this story. First of all- I was beyond pumped to dive into Harmony and Eric's story. I loved the little teases of their relationship in book 1, so I was excited to see what exactly their backstory was, how Romeo and Juliet their relationship was and what happened to drive them apart. I loved the flashbacks- it gave this depth to the memories and feelings that swirled throughout the story as well as some context to why Eric had kind of became this everything guy around the orchard and town.

And honestly, for most of the story I was hooked. I ate up the little breadcrumbs of information or clues. The tension was doing its thing- both as the danger and suspense ramped up but also as Eric and Harmony started getting closer emotionally again.

For me the mixed feelings kind of come in with the big build up that resolves in a way that felt a little too quick and easy for how evasive things were. I was also kind of thrown off a bit when Harmony's hidden talent from her days of being her dad's lackey- just because it kind of felt like it came out of nowhere.

So while this book has some highs and lows for me, I did really like Eric and Harmony's journey and I cannot wait for more Maple Valley and the rest of the Thorne brothers to put their abandonment issues with love to the side for the person that brings out the protective alpha in them 😉

I was pretty confused at the beginning of this book, but as the story unfolded, everything became much clearer—and I’m glad I stuck with it. Harmony Bellarose returns to Val du Lys after testifying against her mobster father, and she’s exhausted from years of running and hiding. All she wants now is to finally stop looking over her shoulder and rebuild a life in her hometown.

Years earlier, Harmony knew she couldn’t stay once she fully understood her father’s “business.” She left everything behind to start over, including the man she loved, Eric Thorne. Walking away from him was one of the hardest decisions she ever made, but she feared what her father might do to them if she stayed.

When Harmony comes back, the tension is immediate and heartbreaking. She and Eric treat each other like strangers, and that emotional distance is painful to watch, especially knowing how much history they share. Although her father is now in prison, the danger hasn’t passed. Her brother—along with Eric’s involvement in the family’s criminal world—has stepped into the power vacuum, and Harmony quickly realizes she’s still being punished for turning her back on her family.

This story blends romance and suspense well, with lingering danger, unresolved emotions, and a heroine trying to reclaim her life while facing the consequences of her past. Once the plot found its footing, I was fully invested in Harmony’s journey and the slow unraveling of secrets, threats, and complicated relationships.

MMC/MFC: Eric and Harmony

Tropes:
* Small town romance
* Returning home
* Second chance
* Forbidden love
* Family legacy
* Close proximity
* Moral ambiguity
* ‘It’s always been you’
* First love
* Slow burn

“And maybe that’s why I still called him hero, not because he pulled me out of a storm, but because he was the first person who ever made me believe I could survive one.”

This… wow….
It had twists and turns, mystery, suspense and intrigue, even more so towards the end where it took a turn to the wild side.

Harmony was from the wrong side of the tracks, her father essentially leading a criminal organisation with potential ties to a number of’ accidents’ over the years. Between car accidents, and other disappearances, there was a lot to consider.
She worked hard to separate from her family, and that involved leaving Eric behind, and not coming back… He’s understandably hurt, and standoffish.

But… I absolutely adored him, Even though he was hurt, he wasn’t cruel. His slow return to feelings was realistic; he was protective, and he was a sweetheart. His family was amazing, and I loved seeing them all come together.

And the final twist? Shocked, yet not… and it leaves me wanting to see the next story! The only issue… the action towards the end escalated so fast, then resolved just as quickly… It felt a little rushed.

So I became a fan of this author with her Westfall U series and Player series. And event he first book in this series was great, totally loved it.

Which is why this really hurts me to say, but this one just really didn’t do it for me. I loved the suspense and loved the angst, but then it just went a bit too far. The reason being it got dragged out to long and kept repeating things.

The story had so much potential. Harmony in the beginning came across as such a strong person and character. Going against her father and their family legacy. But when things got to hard, its like she just coward and kept going on and on how scared she was. But then she kept putting herself in danger and Eric’s family in danger.

I loved that Eric wanted to protect her, but after a while I got annoyed to the fact that he kept on saying ‘I'm not going anywhere, I'm here for you no matter what’. And all I wanted to do was smack her and just let them take care of it once for all, be honest tell them everything instead of hiding stuff…

Anyway I was very disappointed in this one. Like I said had so much potential, but sorry not for me. I wanted to DNF, but I kept on hoping it would turn around… But sadly nope ☹

I will definitely keep on reading this author and would like to see the next one in this series 😊

Sunshine and Sins is the second story in the Maple Valley series. It is a small town, second chance story.

Harmony lives in a small town and is different from her father. He is a crime boss and she doesn't want that life. She runs away after graduating high school and turns him in. He is arrested and goes away. Harmony decides to return to town for a fresh beginning. She gets a job at Sandy's flower shop and gets the apartment above the shop. She wants to live life quietly. Across the street Eric works in his family's store. Harmony loved him before leaving town but never told him.

Eric is running two bakeries for his family and is the police director's son. He also is a volunteer firefighter. His family's roots run deep in the town, a life that is very different from Harmony's.

Eric and Harmony reunite after so many years apart. They still have that chemistry they had before. There are unresolved feelings. They have to work things out and Harmony has to help him understand why she left town after graduation. Will they be able to move on?

I loved the chemistry between Harmony and Eric. I loved how strong she was and didn't want to be defined by her family's wrongdoings. I loved how protective Eric was of Harmony. They were so good for each other. I look forward to more from this talented author.

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy for an honest review.

Firstly, I should like to thank Grey's Promotions for my ARC of this book. This was the second book in the Maple Valley Series and was at minimum 5 stars. I wish I could have rated it way more. I think this series is going to get better and better as it progresses. I thought nothing could beat Wildflowers and Whiskey. Wrong! I should stop thinking sometimes. This was a fantastic read. I totally loved our main couple and who wouldn't love all the Thorne men? From father to the youngest they are all wonderful in their own ways. This book had it all....romance, steamy sex, drama, adventure and even a touch of humor here and there. This gripped me from the very first page to the very last and I cannot wait to read the next in this series which I understand will feature Asher. That should be a good one too. It was wonderful to see Eric and Harmony together and follow their story from the past and also the one in the present. I am not going to give anything away so will say no more. This is a book I can definitely recommend to others. Fans of the author will know what I mean and won't want to miss it. If you have not read this author before, you can easily read this book without having read the first in the series but it was so good I think you may want to go back and read it. Thanks for a really great read to distract me from watching the Olympics too much.

Coming home was never so dangerous.
Sunshine and Sins follows the story of Harmony, who has returned to her hometown after running away from her family, legacy and sins and Eric, the protective, devoted man who never forgot the connection they once shared.
The relationship between the characters is slow-built but inevitable. The connection was broken for a few years, but comes back stronger, fiercer and real.
While Eric desperately wants to protect Harmony from the evil lurking and the danger that is threatening, Harmony feels guilty about dragging innocent people into the mess she helped create.
The story is built up on angst, but also patience and courage.
The risks are definitely high, but the reward is worth it.
R.C. Stephens gives us a compelling story that balances good and evil, danger and peace, moral and immoral, love and hate, right and wrong with deep characters who learn how to survive through the chaos to find their happiness.
Sunshine and Sins is the second book in the series and again proves the reader how addictive can angst be.
This second chance romance is emotionally charged, full of suspense, mystery and tension, but also sense of belonging and eagerness to protect and love.
Thank you for the ARC.

Sunshine and Sins is the second book in RC Stephens romantic suspense series featuring the Thorne brothers. This book picks up right after the ending of the previous book bringing us all the background history between Eric and Harmony. Harmony, the daughter of the local crime boss, and Eric the son of the police director were an unlikely partnership with a deep connection only to be severed one day without word when Harmony left.

Now Harmony is back in Val-Du-Lys after helping to turn her father in and trying to find her footing only its difficult navigating how to react to Eric. The pull and connection between them is still there and real but it’s fragile not knowing if it’s stable or there to stay.

When the past comes back with a vengeance, Eric realizes he can’t keep keeping Harmony at arms length and folds her into the family fold finally finding peace even within the turmoil. This story is tentative and slow in a purposeful way that is anything but causal between Eric and Harmony.

I’m definitely really interested in where this series is headed especially with youngest brother Asher’s story being next.

Thank you @rc_stephens_author and @greyspromo for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback.

Book two in the Maple Valley series gives us Eric and Harmony’s story, and while it took me a little time to settle into it, the flashbacks really helped everything click into place. Once the story found its rhythm, I was fully invested, especially with the suspense thread woven throughout.

Harmony is such a compelling character. After helping the police put her crime boss father behind bars, she becomes the target of someone who definitely isn’t happy about it, and the twists and turns kept me turning pages. Eric, on the other hand, is the ultimate steady, selfless hero, the guy who puts his own dreams on hold to support others, and whose protective instincts come out in full force when Harmony is in danger. That dynamic between them was one of my favorite parts.

I did find myself wishing her hidden talent had come to light earlier since that seemed to be a key to how she was able to support police in putting her father behind bars, and the middle felt a bit stretched before everything wrapped up pretty quickly at the end. Still, the emotional payoff and suspense made it worth the ride.

Overall, this one kept me engaged, surprised me more than once, and absolutely has me ready for book three, because I cannot wait for Asher’s story.

Well this story was a roller coaster!
Harmony returns to her hometown and is not given a warm welcome by most, however her childhood sweetheart Eric, son of the chief of police was happy to see her, although he didn't show this first the outset, as he was still hurt over her just disappearing one day when they were 17.

Harmony had no choice when she left, she couldn't stay and be used by her crime lord father and brother. Harmony was used for her IT skills and had amazing talents in this field which pleased her father. Harmony could no longer run and so gave evidence to the police resulting in her father being imprisoned awaiting trial.

Eric fell quickly again for Harmony and wanted to do everything he could to keep her safe and protected, especially when someone started following her and making threats.

The pace picked up especially nearer the end and I couldn't work out who this stalker/threat was; I gave this book 4 stars as even when I completed the book, I still wasn't 100% sure who he was?!

I liked that there were references to the main characters from book 1 and I am intrigued with the little information we gleamed abut the Thornes' mother and that there is clearly a whole story there too.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Eric and Harmony. He is the son of the chief of police. She has a father that the entire town fears. When they graduate she hits the road. You see she and Eric were are couple until they moment and she broke both of their hearts. However, she had no choice in her mind but to go to protect Eric. Now years have passed and she has returned to Val-Du-Lys. A place she promised she would never come back to. But, she knows that she need to face her past. However, things are not as simple as they seem the second she started receiving cryptic messages again. Since she no longer has to worry about her father she just wants a peaceful life and lives above the flower shop. She is trying to rebuild a quiet life. But she should have known that she would find Eric. He watches her every day from across the street. He is after all the first boy she ever loved. I loved that we got some back story and that things have to be rebuilt bigger and better in this book. There are a lot of feels in this book and you feel like your in the moment with these characters. There is so much push and pull. I loved these two and boy oh boy is it a fight to finish in this one.

Thank you @rc_stephens_author and @greyspromo for the opportunity to read and review this arc!

This is my first time reading a book by this author and I was very pleasantly surprised.

This follows FMC Harmony and MMC Eric. Harmony has come back from Montreal to her hometown of Val-du-Lys. Her and Eric had a brief relationship but she ran from their hometown to keep him safe and run from her father after turning him in. Her father was the head of the mafia and Harmony kept records and copies of everything and turned them over to the police. Unfortunately, her brother felt he could step in while their dad was away. He tried to scare Harmony but ended up putting her in harms way.

Eric is a firefighter/rescue, head of the bakery, and works the family orchards. Harmony taught him how to bake and gave him her mother's recipes to make.

I felt like I was there throughout this whole book. When a book takes you away like this, you know it is a really special book and this author knows how to write!

Please give this book a chance. If you enjoy small town, second chance, found family, twist and turns, suspense, just and the right amount spice then this book is for you!

A moody, character-driven romantic thriller with a strong small-town atmosphere and a heartfelt second-chance romance at its core. Harmony’s return to Val-Du-Lys pulls her back into Eric’s orbit and into a past filled with secrets, family legacy (she run away from), and quiet danger. The stalking plot and encrypted messages kept me genuinely intrigued and curious about who was targeting Harmony, but the story in its second half, begins to drag and feel repetitive, circling the same fears and conflicts while shifting more toward a suspense-heavy narrative than a true romance. Harmony and Eric do have chemistry and a believable history and you can feel their love, but it’s often overshadowed by constant threats, risks, and that tense, always-looking-over-your-shoulder energy that defines much of the latter part of the book. The Thorne family was a highlight, and the atmosphere remains strong throughout. This is a read that will appeal to readers who enjoy suspense-driven romance with strong family dynamics, and I’m curious enough to continue the Maple Valley series and read more from the author.

Book 2 in the Maple Valley series is a standalone with interconnected characters following the Thorne family. This story is about Eric and Harmony, they burnt hot and fast in senior year high school and then she left without a word. They’re from opposite sides of the track, Eric is the son of police director and Harmony is the daughter of local gang lord. We met Harmony briefly towards the end of book 1 (Wildflower and Whiskey) and the story is based around her trying to escape the name and family she was born into. It’s high on suspense, which pretty much led me to reading this in almost one sitting because I could not put this down without knowing what’s gonna happen next!! I felt like I was living in the same fear Harmony had, but the unwavering support from all the Thornes, especially Eric, despite their history, was everything she needed. It’s a slow burn for these two, slowly learning, quietly yet confidently, steady.

I voluntarily reviewed a free advance copy of this book provided by the author. The opinions expressed are my own

Ahem… I don’t know what happens but when i realized, i was 75% done with the book because i just couldn’t stop!!

This was honesty so good! And also so different from the previous book and I loved it! Where Phoenix and Elyna were more like enemies to lovers, with all the vibes of small town romance, yearning and all the goodies, Eric and Harmony were more darker but in a good way, and it was their story that was darker because we had a lot of suspense here, Harmony is the daughter of a criminal and that by itself was a major part of the story, but then we had all this plot with this mystery character hunting Harmony and oh my god!! It was addictive and angsty and Eric was so determined to keep Harmony save and I was so invested that I drank the last 12 chapters because I needed to know who was this man wanting to hurt my girl 😩

I loved this story so much!! I loved the dynamics with all the Thornes and I loved having a glimpse of Elyna and Phoenix together too 🙂‍↔️💖

Now, I’m really intrigued by Asher and I can’t wait to read his story next ✨

✨Sunshine & Sins✨
Maple Valley #2

By R.C. Stephens

Eric, Harmony and a suspense romance

This was one amazing thriller romance. It follows Harmony and Eric. This book is the second in this series and is about the second Thorne son.
When Harmony returns to her hometown after eight years, there is no one waiting for her with open arms. She left town without a word and left broken hearts, trusts and messes behind.
Just to flee her family and their legacy.
Eric is still disappointed by her way of leaving and does everything to stay away. But danger that followed her and his welcoming and caring family makes it impossible for him to hold on to his path.
Old feelings have never really died. But will Harmony stay for good this time or is she on the run again?
This romance has a main suspense plot that overlays the romance part. And focuses on the depth of their feelings instead. There are suspense, crime and secrets and betrayals.
But we get a sweet happy end. And a way to possibly come back to Harmony’s family. Not an usual romance but a very entertaining and thrilling pageturner.

Bring me more Thorne family romances!

𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐬 is the second book in the Maple Valley series by R.C. Stephens, featuring an emotional returning to hometown, second chance romance for Harmony and Eric with a side of suspense. Harmony was always trapped between the sunshine of the life that she dreamed of and the sins of her father’s world. Eric Thorne was the one bright spot in her teenage existence. She left to protect him back then, but now she’s back longing for the solace of home, but it seems like danger is on her heels. I was so excited to return for more of the Thorne family, and I enjoyed Harmony and Eric’s connection, as well as the twist and turns of the emotional suspense and action. However, there were a few flow issues where it felt like the pace was dragging a bit, and then the final resolution left me with needing a bit more information, I guess. Overall, I really like these characters, especially Eric who stepped up for her despite being hurt in the past. I also appreciated Harmony’s strength and core of steel as she was determined to separate herself from her family’s criminal legacy, even if she had to skirt the line to do it. It had a good Black Cat Heroine/Cinnamon Roll Hero combo going on. The found family vibe was strong with the Thornes, and I look forward to getting to know the them more in the future!

It's a long storyline..around 400 pages and at times, it moved like treacle, being thick, slow and dense. I found that my attention wandered in parts as the plot was dragging. Overall it was a reasonable suspense and there were plenty of characters in the fore and on the periphery, so they all played there parts. The main female character, Harmony, was frustrating. She pleaded being scared, worried, and bothered by shadows, yet was wilfully putting herself and those trying to protect her in danger between 41 - 47 chapters. Her decisions or actions were careless,selfish and evasive when questioned. I didn't warm to her. Eric and his family were patient, kind and protective. The bad guy lurked in the shadows, but the questions were who, where, when, why? It all revolved around her father and the past. I felt the ending felt rushed and left things unanswered, unsure as to whether it ends on a cliffhanger or not.
It is not bad reading, just not great, as being something that I would not choose to re-read. Others may disagree. Overall 3.5** rating

Sunshine and Sins by R.C. Stephens
Book 2 in the Maple Valley series

Thank you to Grays Promotion and R.C. Stephens for the opportunity to ARC read this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was a new-to-me author, and since this is book two in the Maple Valley series, I decided to read book one first. Book one had the perfect balance of suspense and romance, so I went into this one expecting to love it just as much.

While the suspense element was strong and definitely kept me guessing, this installment felt a bit repetitive at times, as though certain scenes or emotions were revisited a little too often. I also didn’t fully feel the romantic connection between the main characters, which made it harder for me to emotionally invest in their relationship.

That said, the mystery aspect is still pulling me in. I’m genuinely intrigued and still trying to piece together who the true villains are. I’m definitely invested in these characters now and looking forward to seeing how everything unfolds in the next book. 🤔
