The Omega Prophecy

Rate this book
One fight. One shattered box. One unleashed goddess.

On my sixteenth birthday, I broke the one promise I swore I’d keep—and unleashed Pandora on my small Oregon town. Now she’s turning everything I love into her personal nightmare… starting with kidnapping my twin sister, Cass.

To get her back, I’ll have to live up to an ancient prophecy that says I’m the key to the world's salvation... Or it's destruction. And if that isn’t complicated enough, the girl I love is tangled up in the crossfire.

The rules are rigged. The clock is ticking. And in Pandora’s game, love isn’t just who you’d die for—it’s what you’re willing to become.

Perfect for fans of The Raven Cycle, Percy Jackson, Stranger Things, and Six of Crows.

About the author

J. O'Neill

1 book3 followers
J. O’Neill writes the kind of stories she grew up craving—queer urban fantasies about fierce, messy heroines who would burn the world down for the people they love.

By day, she lives in Los Angeles with her wife, their amazing daughter, and Clifford, a large, chaotic dog who graciously allows them to share his house. By night, she dives into worlds of hidden magic, dangerous prophecies, and love that refuses to be quiet.

Raised on a steady diet of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Stephen King, she has always been drawn to tales where ordinary people are thrust into extraordinary—and often terrifying—circumstances. It’s no wonder she read every single Stephen King novel before the age of twelve.

When she’s not writing books, J. O’Neill works as a TV and film writer, and occasionally sneaks in some fan fiction on AO3 for sheer joy of it. She’s a lifelong pop culture junkie with an encyclopedic knowledge of queer TV and film characters, and she fuels her creative life on a steady stream of black coffee, Tony’s Chocolonely bars, and Jeni’s Ice Cream.

She is also a devoted jigsaw puzzler—finishing three to four puzzles a week and owning over 500 of them—a skill that comes in handy when piecing together the intricate, twist-filled plots of her novels.

The Omega Prophecy is her debut novel, the first in a series that blends ancient myths, queer romance, and high-stakes supernatural suspense.

A YA sapphic fantasy novel based loosely around Greek myths and legends. The debut novel of J O'Neil.

The prophecy speaks of the one who will bring salvation or destruction to the world. It's named the omega prophecy because why not? I don't want to waste brain cells attempting to understand the significance.

Our protagonist, the MC is Alex, the typical misunderstood angsty teenager who has built walls and withdrawn from the world.

The antagonist is apparently Pandora though we don't see much of her throughout the book and apparently portrayed as a goddess though in the actual myth she was the first mortal woman created.

The main focus of the story is Alex's attempt to save her twin sister Cass (are they mirror twins?) who has been kidnapped by Pandora. The story also depicts the progression of Alex from the angsty insecure teenager into a slightly less angsty and insecure version of her current self, with subplot romances between Alex and Lindsay, Olivia and Wade and (possibly) Sam and Benji.

I felt like some parts of the story didn't make much sense, was inconsistent, annoying or was just skipped over for the sake of convenience and brevity. The ending especially did not make much sense. I think half my brain cells died trying to figure what this story is about.

Even though the flow of the story was gripping, exciting and engaging, it doesn't help with the swirling confusion, that swirls and confuses the confused swirls of the confusing story.

The conclusion, the book was quite entertaining and captivating, but just takes too much effort to actually make sense of the whole story.

I hope the author can provide more clear and concise explanations in the second book for simple minded folks like me...

A YA book about Pandora's box and a family legacy? I'm a sucker for Greek mythology, so this was right up my alley. This is the 1st book in a series. The ending isn't a cliffhanger per se but sets up the next book.

Cass and Alex Dell are the current guardians of the box after the mysterious disappearance of their parents on their 6th birthday. The girls are similar in appearance but opposites in everything else. Their approaching 16th birthday triggers their legacy, power, and visions. Not to mention the breaking of the box, Cassandra's kidnapping, and letting all manner of ancient Greek myths invade this realm. Cerberus was the not the scariest myth brought to life. There were plenty of entities to terrorize the group. Alex's journey and acceptance of her path is going to be pivotal to this series.

I enjoyed this book, there were a few inconsistencies but this was an interesting take.

This story definitely captivated me, once I started I couldn’t stop reading.

I really enjoyed the non-stop action and the primary focus on Greek mythology. Probably because of my lack of in depth knowledge on the subject, sometimes I was confused as to what was happening and how it came to be.

I liked all of the characters, primary and secondary. I enjoyed that they all served a particular purpose, Benji’s historical knowledge, Sam’s knowledge of languages, Olivia’s family heritage and protectiveness and Wade and Lindsay’s physical protection of their loved ones and constant support.

This book is part of a series or it will at least have a sequel that I’m looking forward to read.

Thank you to J. O’Neill and BookSirens for providing me with an eARC.

I loved this book, it’s a read that creeps into your thoughts until you just wanna close yourself away and read till you finish.

It’s Slow-Burn supernatural in the best way. At first it seems almost normal, teenage angst, family drama and the weird creeps in until it bursts into everything in the story. I loved the unique spin on old Greek and supernatural histories. A stranger things meets Greek mythology vibe that made my nerd senses tingle.

The author has a way of making you feel just as Alex does, questioning her own mind and what she sees when it doesn’t fit into a nice normal box.

Cass was a tough nut to crack for me in the beginning, seeing her thru the Alex/friends POV and the contention between the sisters was almost a disconnect for me in the story, it almost didn’t fit but as the characters built in complexity and you get an understanding of the group dynamics and the true scope of what was unleashed is revealed I had super big feels for her. Nobody can hurt you the way a sibling can. Makes you love and hate them equally.

I felt such real remembered angst at the relationship between Alex & Lindsay, a relationship that so many young queer women and men experience, so authentic and sweet even in its painful realities. It gave me life to read those slow sweet moments, stolen kisses and touches, showing how when you find your person how much of a balm simple gestures and contact can be in chaos. I ship them so hard.

Loved the rag tag group as a whole and how they bicker, they have their own sub social groups, but band together when faced with angry adults that don’t really see or respect them. Alternatively it was refreshing having the perspective of Olivia who with her own relationship and grief still manages to be what the girls need, even when she feels lost.

This will be a repeat read for me, and I look forward to seeing what J. Writes next!

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily. This is my honest opinion.

J. O’Neill’s The Omega Prophecy is a masterclass in heartwrenching horror fantasy that buries you in all the feelings from thrills to chills. From the opening line of a kid’s worst nightmare, devastation doesn’t even begin to describe the nightmare to come when the twins, Alex and Cass, turn sixteen. Destiny awaits them both… but nobody knows what horrors the mythical Pandora and her box will unleash on Olympia Falls when Cass suddenly vanishes. Alex swears she’ll get her sister back and save the world from destruction, but the clock is ticking and her family, friends, and girlfriend that she loves are targets of an ancient wrath both clever and heartless.

From six years old to sixteen, Alex has sought to feel whole again—Mom, Dad, Cass—everybody back under one roof, laughing, teasing, going to Luigi’s on birthdays, but that hasn’t happened and can’t until the prophecy is fulfilled. The stakes are impossibly high—keep family, friends, and your love safe—yet the peril is deliberately higher, from deadly robed figures to nasty mythical beasts to a malignant storm that won’t quit.

J. O’Neill’s masterful writing crafts an authentic, absorbing, and intelligent narrative that shines in every scene. The story beautifully captures the raw, tender, and lively aspects of a fractured family that never truly healed, forced to confront otherworldly horrors once more while grappling with teenage drama.

The emotional depth of the characters serves as a stark and effective contrast to the disturbingly haunting, ancient, and monstrous presence that hunts and maims its victims in a small Oregon town. This book is an effortless, thrilling read, filled with heartfelt moments that gain profound weight against the backdrop of real danger. The gritty threats and riveting fights are amplified by the story’s spellbinding lore, guaranteeing that readers will be captivated and constantly desiring more.

So, if you are looking for:

* A delightful blend of heart and horror that stays with you
* An unlikely and reluctant hero who avoids the limelight
* Stories steeped in myth and legend
* A series of brutal, edge-of-your-seat battles

… then The Omega Prophecy is a must read! I highly recommend picking up copies for you and your friends!

I must say that I did shed a few tears while reading the book.

Alex and Cass, twins, going through some stuff. Alex is lesbian, and didn't tell her twin sister Cass about it. Cass caught Alex and Lindsay, Cass's friend, in a compromising situation, that is when they started fighting, and Cass ignoring Alex. That whole situation kind of hurt my heart.

On top of all that, the red robes are back again, the ones that made the twins' parents disappear. Now the same thing is happening again, and when Cass disappears too before they can sort their issues out.

The whole situation that Alex and all her friends has to fight through to try to save Cass, and poor Aunt Olivia that suddenly has to also face the truth of what was told to her all those years ago.

Wow. I can't wait to read the next one. I really hope there will be a next one, on account of the great big cliffhanger that this one ended on.

The book was really good! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I don’t usually read YA like this. Very PG, didn’t find any trigger warnings besides maybe homophobia coming from Lindsay’s dad. This book had major percy Jackson vibes, and was non stop action/adventure from beginning to end. Kept you asking “what happens next”. Some parts I did find a little over the top with what’s going on, like it was too much, but those were few and far between. This author definitely knows how to tell a story and definitely knows how to end with a cliffhanger! The ending was very sudden and abrupt though, and I felt it could’ve ended a bit smoother. Definitely leaves you wanting more! Looking forward to the next book!

Wow.

If I could give this book more than five stars, I would, without a doubt, because this book was beyond expectations.

This book was spectacular if I’m being honest. The thought and the research that went into this book was apparent. Right from the get-go, i was hooked, there was just something truly magical in the way the story was weaved. The writing was thought provoking, and it’s the first book in a long time that has physically pulled me into the world, and made me feel like i was right there along for the ride.

Reading this book was like taking a deep breath and being forced to hold it, just waiting for the next moment to be able to read again. I was on the edge of my seat from the moment the story opened, and I’m sorry, but what was that ending? I was watching that page count go down, and i knew something was coming (I did guess the twist, but that did not take anything away from the story) and it was still very much a slap to the face when it happened, and I’m left over here going Excuse me, what? What do you mean, this is where it ends? I hate waiting, especially when books are written as well as this one is. This is a book series, and the author I will be adding to my instant buy list without a doubt.

On the surface, this is a story about twins who faced something traumatic when they were younger, their parents went missing, and they’ve lived with that since. There are family secrets and history, there’s trauma, and Greek myth throughout, and it’s done so perfectly. But when you start pulling back the layers, when you start looking deeper beneath the surface, it’s so much more than just a typical YA book. It has something deep and real and raw.

We’re thrust into the mind of Alex, who is, your typical teenager if we’re being honest, and the type of teenager we come to expect from the likes of a YA book, but after everything she’s been through, honestly, it’s to be expected that she trusts few people, and she’s a little closed of. It’s also expected that her twin would be the opposite of it. We don’t get much of their relationship, but we do get a lot of it in the form of flashbacks and being told via Alex how things were, because of course, the two of them have had a falling out.

There is no gentle in this book; we thrust right into the action, and it picks up speed quickly. After a fight with her twin, Alex breaks a box she’s been told to protect for ten years, and everything goes downhill from there. Moral of the story, don’t break shit when you're angry.

In between the twists of Myth, and family secrets, we have a love story, a beautiful love story between Alex and her girlfriend (the crux of the fight between her and her sister). We have friendships, and teenagers with more weight on their shoulders than anyone should bear. This is a coming-of-age story told in the best way. And mixed between the fast-paced story, there are moments of raw truths, and friendships being tested, and soft downtimes that the book needed.

Like i said this book was so well done that i could not put it down, nor did i. I pray the wait for the second book isn’t long, because that cliffhanger was rude.

Honestly this book was amazing . If I could reread this book first the first time, I absolutely would. The Omega Prophecy completely blew past my expectations. From the beginning, I was immersed in the book, there is something with how the author wrote that made you feel there. The writing is sharp, emotional, which just adds to the book. On the surface, it’s about twin sisters dealing with family tragedy and ancient secrets, but it goes so much more in depth than that. It’s about grief, identity, and the weight of destiny, all wrapped in a world built on Greek mythology and heart-pounding action. Alex is such a create female lead main character, real protagonist—closed off but fiercely loyal and her complicated relationship with her twin, Cass, adds a lot of emotional depth. As I am a twin this spoke really hard to me. And of course, when it hits the fan… everything spirals fast. Moral of the story: don’t break ancient boxes when you’re angry.
What really stood out to me was the different elements from the growth of the characters, the love story, the friendships, the moments of quiet in between the action of the book. The queer romance at the center is tender and beautifully written, balancing the darker, and adding a whole other level to the book. Throughout the book you can feel for the characters and their growth. The pacing is intense in the best way. This book is deep, emotional, and almost impossible to put down. I’m already excited for the secret and impatient for the sequel because of that ending.

I was given this book complimentary from Book Sirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review.
Awesome book, I can describe it as like firing a machine gun the first couple of chapters load and prime then the trigger is pulled and everything happens until you come to the end and you sit back in the quiet and WOW! Once the action starts it really does not let up and running through it all is a truly great romance which doesn't just add to the enjoyment it multiplies it, Lindsay and Alex are the best couple I have read in a long long while, I I want more of them. As for the rest of the characters, they frame the story and the main couple so well.
Five stars just does not do it for how positive I feel about this book. Recommend it? Hell yes!

YA thriller/horror about the typical "chosen one" who learns about their special powers only about 48 hours before the boss fight they're magically ready for.
With that being said, I still really enjoyed the story. I thought it was a good thriller and entertaining. It has a good found family dynamic, and is sapphically romantic in a way that compliments the story rather than taking it over.
I was given an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I struggled with how I wanted to rate this though. This Pandora's Box story I think was well done, I appreciate bringing the old into the new, and I'll likely be back for the eventual sequel. Although I would mostly only recommend this to teens, because I believe adults would find themselves pausing to question things occasionally, as well as it being a bit cliche.

This compelling young adult novel offers a fresh, sapphic reimagining of Greek mythology, expertly blending ancient lore with modern teenage experiences of first love, angst, and intricate sibling relationships.

While the ambitious mythological framework occasionally resulted in an overly complex plot and some unclear details that hindered full immersion, the book's unique voice, commitment to diverse relationships, and profound emotional depth made it a truly worthwhile journey.

A gripping, emotionally charged YA fantasy that hooked me from page one. The mix of prophecy, sisterly devotion, and the chaos Pandora brings made the stakes feel huge and personal at the same time. I loved how the story balanced fast-paced danger with real heart, especially the complicated love thread woven through it. Bold, tense, and beautifully intense.

I stumbled on this while scrolling the feeds on Instagram and was hooked by the description: ‘Greek Mythology X Stranger Things’

The Omega Prophecy delivered.

Expect horrifying family curses, messy sibling arguments, gaslighting, mysterious figures in the dark, ancient monsters from Greek Mythology, and way too much for a YA to handle, but she still does anyway.

I enjoyed learning about the characters as they fight and uncover the mysterious powers that took Alex’s sister, and threaten to kill Alex’s gang. The switch in pacing from slower, introspective scenes to fast-paced action held my attention throughout the book.

This isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning of this series. Can’t wait to see how it unfolds.
Big thank you to the author for the ARC, it was a fun read!
