Some recipes call for sugar and spice. Ours calls for solving a murder...
My grandmother taught me that magic is like it’s all about intention. As a fire witch, I pour my heart into every loaf of bread, every comfort scone. Opening a bakery with my coven sisters was supposed to be the culmination of that dream—a place where our kitchen magic could shine.
But during renovations, we didn't just find asbestos; we found a skeleton clutching a scorched spellbook. A spellbook that hums with a power that recognizes my own, practically begging me to uncover its secrets. This wasn’t just any skeleton; it was a kitchen witch, just like me, and she was murdered.
Now, with the help of my earth-witch and chaos-witch sisters, and our magically-inclined cat, I have to follow a trail of decades-old crumbs. Between deciphering sentient recipes and dodging the town's charmingly frustrating fire marshal, I'm starting to realize that the most dangerous secrets are the ones hidden in plain sight.

4.5 stars! Bria and her friends are a lovely bunch! They want to open their own bakery together, hiding their magic in plain sight, but also honoring Bria's heritage. When they discover bones and a spell book in a wall, the mystery needs to be solved. The author did a wonderful job describing this quirky town and its inhabitants. The women's friendship is absolutely beautiful, and their bonds are so strong. I loved learning about each of these women but also have the possibility of learning more in additional books.
"Magic, acceptance, and the odd spoonful of mischief. This was our new normal."
There are many books in the cozy witchy culinary mystery genre, and I confess it's a genre I enjoy. This is a welcome addition. I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on the need for community and collaboration in problem solving, and the wise witticisms of Grandma Myrtle. I didn't realize until reading this book how overwhelmingly the genre is dominated by the scent of cinnamon, but it really is. I'm delighted to have a title that gives equal weight to cardamom! I am someone for whom the senses of smell and taste powerfully influence my world. Many books bring their stories to life almost exclusively through the visual, sometimes through audio. A book that is so immersed in scent as a way to make characters distinctive and to move the plot forward? Rare, indeed. Such a pleasure to find a book in which a character navigates their world in a way that makes sense to me.
There are several other reviews that provide spoilers, so I'll leave that to those. Looking forward to more stories in this series.
A slightly different approach to an uncertain witch and her uncontrolled fire power. I liked the story, her fellow coven/friends, Crumbs the cat, and Dean, the really slow burn romantic partner. The Grandma Myrtle sayings were a little much. I hope this is just the beginning of a series.
The story would have been better without all of the anecdotes from the dead grandmother and the fire/magic puns. Overall I hated the writing style, but it was a short enough book that I was fine to finish it. I also felt that there were a ton of plot holes or missing parts of the plot. I didn't understand why the three main characters wouldn't all live together--they're a coven, after all.
This book has so much character, amusement and that special magical mystery to it. I couldn’t put it down. I stayed up reading it to the very last page. I highly recommend this book and look forward to many more to come.
