I need a husband. Jensen needs a business makeover. A marriage of convenience should solve both our problems.

Moving back to Coal Haven should have been simple—start my tutoring business, settle into the historic house my grandmother left me, and move on from my past. But there’s a I can’t claim the house unless I’m married.

Jensen Hollis. My childhood rival. The guy I spent years trying to outdo. The one who married our mutual friend while I watched from the sidelines. Now he’s divorced, a single dad, and—somehow—my only option.

It’s a perfect arrangement. A temporary marriage. One year with no feelings involved. At least, that was the plan… until playing house starts to feel a little too real.

This is my first book in this series that I have read. It has a cute story line it seemed to be missing something. You meet a cute little 10 year old that is getting online tutoring by a tutor named Poppy. It turns out that she went to school with his dad and was very good friends of his until she moved away. Fast forward, she moved back to town and in order to get one of the family houses she is supposed to be married for a year. In steps Jensen and he offers her a place to live and will marry her. On one condition, she helps him keep his business alive my helping him professionally with his advertising and emails. They agree and they have to prove to her dad and aunt that they are really a couple not just a fake couple.
As time goes on, they both develop feelings and slowly start to break their contract that they set with each other. However they are doing it out of love for one another yet neither has told the other. They include his son on a lot of things and make him feel welcome with them. Everything is going great until his ex wife shows up and puts a curve ball into things.
The day of the wedding comes and while the ex is running her mouth the family over hears it and starts to question what’s going on. That’s when they each come out and say that they really do love each other. While the storyline is there there is some cute moments I just felt like it was boring. There is spice and lots of it. This is just my opinion but I say take a chance on it you might think differently.

ARC Book Review
Poppy Kisses
A Novel Written By Marie Johnston
Fiction - Romance
Published October 2025
336 Pages
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is Book 3 in the author’s Return to Coal Haven Series. The two main characters in this book, Poppy Duke and Jensen Hollis, were childhood friends who are considering a marriage of convenience. Jensen is a divorced father with a son. He is a cabinet maker whose business is struggling. Poppy Duke is a tutor who specializes in helping students with dyslexia. Jensen is surprised to discover Poppy is the online tutor for his son, Augie. Because of family trust stipulations, Poppy needs a husband to gain ownership of her grandmother’s house. Helping Poppy renovate her grandmother’s house, will give Jensen’s business a boost. Marrying will help both of their careers.

This marriage of convenience story has a bit of a twist. The marriage does not occur right away. There is time for Poppy and Jensen to get reacquainted. They both soon come to realize this is more than a business deal. The chemistry between the two is undeniable.

This story is unique that it has a focus on dyslexia. This is not represented very often in fiction books. Readers get an insight into the struggles faced by individuals with dyslexia.

“Nothing in my imagination had summoned anything this good.”

𝓟𝓸𝓹𝓹𝔂 𝓐𝓷𝓭 𝓙𝓮𝓷𝓼𝓮𝓷

From the very first book, this series has had me in a chokehold—and Poppy’s story might be my favorite yet. I’m a sucker for marriage of convenience, meddling families, and small-town magic, and this one delivers all three with heart and humor. The matchmaking grandmother premise? Chef’s kiss.
Poppy Duke is the third sibling to return to Coal Haven, North Dakota, after her grandmother’s passing, she's due to inherit a small farmhouse which would be the perfect place to launch the next phase of her dreams. Except in order to gain ownership she's been tasked with finding a husband. She’s nursing a bruised ego and trying to rebuild her life on her own terms. She never thought someone from her past, could be the key to her future. Enter Jensen: single dad, hometown heartthrob, and the man who’s been quietly carrying a torch for Poppy since forever. When she shows up as his son’s tutor, it’s game on. I loved the dynamic between Jensen, Poppy and Auggie. It was truly special.
Their history is complicated—full of misreads and missed chances—but the chemistry? Off the charts. Watching them navigate old wounds, set ground rules, and slowly fall for each other was pure joy. Poppy is smart, kind, and driven, even if she can’t always see it. Jensen sees it, though. He sees her. And that perspective shift? It’s everything. Poppy and her imposter syndrome were so relatable throughout the whole story, and I loved that at the height of the plot tension Jensen kept those open lines of communication and made it a point to make sure Poppy never doubted his love and dedication to her.
This book gave me all the feels: slow-burn tension, heartfelt family moments, and a romance that felt both grounded and swoony. I’m obsessed with the Duke family—and yes, I’m already counting down the days until Clover’s book drops.

Jensen and Poppy were once childhood friends but from their earliest years he was smitten with another. Now a divorced single dad, he is back in her life and a mutual arrangement has them sharing a house and trying to keep their hands off of each other. Will either of them risk opening themselves up to hurt and will Jensen’s ex throw a spanner in the works?

4 Star Review Poppy Kisses (Return To Coal Haven #3) by Marie Johnston

Set in Coal Haven, this is single dad Jensen Hollis and Poppy Duke’s marriage of convenience story.

To claim an inheritance Poppy must be married and Jensen steps in . After all it’s only for a year, what’s the worst that could happen.

However, we all know that lines can be crossed and feelings can evolve.

This was an emotional story that drew me in and held my attention throughout.

This series has been a joy to read, and this book was so good.

This book had me so invested from the moment I started reading. The plot was so well constructed, and it allowed for amazing character development, a touch of drama, and the reader was able to enjoy getting to know the personalities of the main characters. The tropes, which included a marriage of convenience to be able to get ownership of a house, were perfect, I enjoyed how Jensen was determined to help Poppy, and in return, Poppy was welling to help Jensen with his dyslexia.

Thank you to Marie for the ARC.

It’s Poppy’s turn to settle her inheritance and claim the property her grandmother left to her.
As with her siblings, she must be married for one year to do that. Enter Jensen. They met in kindergarten. Poppy, Jensen & Hassie were inseparable throughout their early teens, until things changed.

I loved the way they built their relationship, or rebuilt it. Words hurt, people need to take better care how they use them. Auggie was an adorable addition. This story involves a learning disability, highlighted with great care and thoughtful explanation. Many people suffer from dyslexia and very few understand their struggles.

Johnston is a master at writing messy, dysfunctional families that ultimately find their true love.
One more happy Duke, only two siblings are left.

Thanks to TAA for this ARC! This was such a sweet read and I really loved how it focused on dyslexia. Since the author has personal experience with it, the story felt so much more real and genuine. The romance was cute, though I did wish for a little more spark. What I absolutely could not vibe with was Jensen calling Poppy “four-ten.” Like… why? Out of all the nicknames in the world, that’s the one you land on? It gave me the ick every single time. Still, overall a fun story with heart.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fake relationship, marriage of convenience agreement romance. Neither is looking for love, and doesn’t even think it is possible to find it anymore. Though he remembers their childhood friendship fondly, she does not. He constantly compared her to his now ex, Hassie, and found Poppy wanting. He had made her feel inferior, invisible and unworthy of him at a time when she had a crush on him. She carried those feelings into every relationship after that, and a few failures in other area of her life only heightened them. When he suggests that he marry her so that she can meet the stipulations needed to inherit a house, and in return, he can get her help with his own dyslexia and business paperwork. Poppy is reluctant to agree, fearing he isn’t over his ex and she will be constantly be found wanting again.

After she tells him how he made her feel as a child, Jensen promises Poppy that it will never happen again. In truth, he is no longer enamoured with his ex, the mother of his son. He now sees her as she truly is….a selfish, self-absorbed woman who doesn’t see beyond herself, and doesn’t prioritize her 10-year-old son. Jensen is very attracted to Poppy and vows to help her see herself as she truly is ….kind, compassionate and a skilled advocate for those with learning disabilities. He can’t stop ogling her figure and assets, and he makes sure to let her know about his interest. Jensen soon makes it his business to do everything in his power to get Poppy to stay in Coal Haven, hopefully as his wife for a lifetime, instead of just for a year.

I loved the snark, the flirting and the high heat chemistry between them. Jensen makes amends to Poppy, and shows her how he sees her and that his view of her is exceptional. They support each other’s career and goals and they encourage each other too. I loved the rapport between Poppy and Auggie too. She gives him the attention he has longed to get from his own mother and encourages him to keep moving forward, even though his dyslexia sometimes makes it hard. She is his friend, his advocate and his mother figure. I also enjoyed the teasing, the advice and the encouragement Poppy’s siblings gave her. They all went through something similar and they make sure to let Poppy and Jensen know that they have a support system to help them if necessary.

I give this marvellous book two thumbs up, five stars plus, and my heartfelt recommendation.

I have not read this author or series before but wanted to pick it up for the dyslexia rep with the hero.

The heroine, Poppy is thirty and moves back to the small own she grew up in, while doing remote tutor classes for students with dyslexia. She sees her childhood pal who constantly teases and competes with her Jensen in the background who has become hot and he turns out to be the single father of Auggie, her student. She needs to be married for a year to get the house her grandmother wills to her and he needs help with his writing and marketing as he is losing business due to typos. They have an agreement to marry for convenience.

I liked that the author shows more about how dyslexia affects the life of a student in that they can become fatigued and "zombified" after a tough day at school (what Poppy calls a hard brain day)and sensory things like lights can be too much for them. Jensen switches off the light for his son when he notices that he has a vacant look. I have not seen this portrayed of dyslexia before.

Poppy thinks Jensen will never get over his childhood love, Hassie and he constantly compare her to the other girl when they were young but Jensen has had it hard tough as his marriage with Hassie was the opposite of happy. She was constantly saying that he was not enough and seemed more concerned with herself and her goals.

They go back and forth whether what they are experiencing is share by the other person which caused the middle of the book to be draggy. It does take alot for me to get into a contemporary romance. There were many mentions and thoughts of Poppy's sexy legs and butt by Jensen (it felt like he had a fetish for those areas of her body). She seems to not be confident in her looks (she sounds fit and has a great body) and body shape and it was hard to picture what she actually looks like.

I did like how they found shared interest with Auggie through soccer and how Jensen helps Poppy get her confidence back to coach soccer recreationally after a bad experience in her previous town. Poppy is more concerned with including Auggie in her and Jensen's time than his ex wife. The scene where she choses her wedding dress was very sweet. There is some drama as Hassie returns when she finds out they are getting married. Jensen was in touch with how he felt and his trauma from his past marriage with Hassie, it flows into his new relationship with Poppy as he is afraid she will leave the town if her small business does not take off.

Tropes: Small town, marriage of convenience, fake marriage, he gives her nicknames (four-ten)

Representation:
- Hero has Dyslexia
- Hero's son Auggie has Dyslexia

This has to be one of the best books I've read this year, and that’s saying a lot!

Poppy and Jensen are our main characters for Poppy Kisses, and honestly, they were such a delight to read about. I enjoyed everything about this book, including our main plot, which focused on a marriage of convenience that will definitely benefit both of them in the best way. Not only did I enjoy this book so much, but I also loved that it focused on an important issue, such as Dyslexia. I didn’t really know much about it, but now I definitely want to know more.

The whole time, I was so engrossed in this book that I just knew that it was going to be a good one. I could t put it down, no matter how hard I tried. I found it easy to love Poppy and Jensen so much, and I just adored their relationship so much. They challenged each other, and after a little back and forth between them, they were able to actually become something more.

As you may know, both Poppy and Jensen have quite a bit of history, considering they have practically known each other since childhood. The only thing is, she ended up moving, and when she did, she left Jensen and her other childhood friend, Hassie, who ended up marrying Jensen.

Now he’s divorced, a single dad, and Poppy’s only option for getting a historic house that her grandmother left her is that she can't claim it unless she is married. While she needs somewhere to start her tutoring business, Jensen needs a makeover for his business to bring in clients.

While they are trying to make the best out of the situation that they are now in, when they agree to a temporary marriage for a year with no feelings, but as you know, agreements like that don't always happen :)

I truly recommend this book because the overall plot and chemistry between Poppy and Jensen are perfect, and I just couldn't put this book down at all until I knew how it ended. Of course, as a new reader of Marie Johnston, I was really impressed by her writing style and her way of writing a book worth reading, and I have no problem sharing it with my friends.

I have been a Marie Johnston Stan for a while now and I always get so excited when I know she Is fixing to drop a new book! This book is the third in the Return To Coal Haven and set in North Dakota. If you haven't read any of her books that are set in Coal Haven I highly recommend you checking them out! They are all standalone but do interconnect with other books. If you love Cowboys set on a family ranch, or anything around a a large family, this is the author and series for you!

Poppy, Jenson and Augie stole my heart! I loved seeing the chemistry as the story developed, not to mention how Poppy and Augie got along. If you didn't know, I am a marriage of convenience JUNKIE! Poppy and Jenson were the two people who needed each other even if they didn't want to admit it. They had the banter that I love and the moments in between that gave us the greatest crescendo.

I can't help but say how much Poppy and Jenson couldn't have weathered worse circumstances on their own. They had each other when things got hard, even if at times they didn't know what they were going to do. They were able to work things through in order to see that even when things get rough they are there for each other.

I know when Poppy was asked by Jenson if she would help him with his business, she was thinking there is no way this is going to end well. With both people realizing how much they needed each other, they were able to see how well they fit each other like the last puzzle piece in the bigger puzzle.

Last but not least, I have to say this book has Marie's amazing Spice that she is known for! She could give us the bare minimum but she knows exactly how to make it work! I am so beyond excited for the next book she has for us!

If you have read this series then you will know, Marie has written a fantastic Marriage of convenience series so far. The Duke siblings can get their inheritance once married for a year. So this one was Poppy's story.
They all moved from Coal Haven when she was 15 but before that she had a competitive friendship with Jensen and Hassie. However Hassie is those self serving friends and I know what that feels like. Yet like me, she was still nice. Only problem the boy she liked kept comparing her to Hassie and she was always lacking. Even though they were young, it still affected her years later.
I loved her passion to help children with dyslexia and also soccer ⚽. Again I could relate her love to work with children. She was so real and genuine.
Jensen made a mistake that gave him his wonderful 10 Yr old son Auggie. I did feel sad for Jensen because his life was wasted on one sided infatuation rather than love. Glad he eventually saw what was in front of him.
He is an amazing dad and is doing everything to help his son's struggle with dyslexia. He too has issues with it. He has got by in life with it but now it's affecting his business.
When he gets shocked by seeing Poppy, tutoring his son online, he is so happy.
Their relationship is complicated and I liked seeing them grow together and learn to trust again. But it's a struggle for Poppy as Jensen is very flirty, sweet and is always encouraging her giving her a boost in confidence.
Also her relationship with Auggie is so cute and the compassion she shows him, melts Jensen.
She needs a husband to get her dream house and he needs help with his business. Now to convince her Aunt with a real wedding.
Unfortunately his patronising ex turns up and I will leave it to you to find out what happens.
This was my favourite of the series even though I liked the all.
Now Clover is left and I have a feeling I know what will happen with her. Can't wait.

This series has had me hooked from book #1! I love marriage of convenience, a small town, and a meddling family! The premise of meddling grandmother just sweetened the deal! Poppy is the 3rd Duke sibling to find herself back in Crocus Valley, North Dakota after their grandmother's passing looking for a husband.
Jensen is a single dad back in his small hometown after divorcing. He works hard to make ends meet and puts his son first. But Jensen is most definitely just going through the motions, so when Poppy Duke reappears in his life as his son's tutor he is ecstatic. Poppy and Jensen have a lot of history. Jensen is excited to have Poppy back in his life.
Poppy on the other hand is back in her hometown mending her heart and ego. She has really found something that she is passionate about and wants to make it all work. Poppy is so very hard on herself, and I really wish she could have seen herself from the readers, Jensen, Auggie, and her family's eyes. Poppy is so kind, smart, driven, and loving. While she and Jensen have history they both see their history differently.
I think so many women will be able to relate to Poppy and play the comparison game thinking we don’t measure up to someone else, but given we have Jensen’s perspective we know that she has his heart in her hands. I thoroughly enjoyed the progression of their relationship and the “rules” that they set. These two really were so perfect for one another. One of my favorite parts is that I could see myself being friends with them, and watching them fall in love with one another was so special. I adore spending time with the Duke family and I am so excited for what is to come in this series…yes, I am already counting down to Clover’s book!

Poppy Duke has found herself in quite the predicament... she has moved home to claim the little farmhouse that her late grandmother left her, but in order to claim said property she must show that she is happily married. The "married" part is where the predicament lies... she doesn't have a man in her life. But little does she know a little divine intervention is about to occur and she's about to find herself that husband, an unlikely one at that.

Poppy Kisses is a wonderfully penned small town romance that comes brimming with all the swoons and feels your heart can handle! When Poppy returned Coal Haven it was with the intention of rebuilding her life and making her dream of creating a tutoring business a reality... but her grandmother had other plans for her. The kind of plans that involve matters of the heart and finally finding her own slice of happily ever after. When she learns that the only way she can get her little farmhouse is to find a husband she feels like it is an impossible task. Then an old friend wanders into her life and offers up a perfect solution...one that should benefit them both, in more ways than one!

I really enjoyed this newest offering from Ms. Johnston, from the get-go these two had me in their corner rooting them on. They had a past with a little hurt attached to it, but with a little healing and making amends they found themselves on the right track... one that turned out to be more than either expected. It was such a fun and heartfelt journey, one that I highly recommend you take!! These characters will steal your heart at first meet!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.

ARC Review: 4.5 ⭐️
Poppy Kisses is book 3 in the Return to Coal Haven series featuring Jensen Hollis & Poppy Duke.

Jensen & Poppy were friends when they were children, but Jensen was always interested in another girl Hassie, that they both grew up with. Hassie is now Jensen’s ex wife and the mother of his son Auggie.

Auggie is dyslexic and has been receiving tutoring to help him with school. Poppy’s friend was the one conducting his tutoring but asks Poppy to fill in. During their first session, Jensen walks by the computer and realizes Auggie’s tutor is Poppy and is excited to see her again.

Jensen runs his own cabinet company and was recently turned down for a job. While in the grocery store, he overhears the client telling another person about how terrible grammar is in his emails and that’s why they decided not to go with his company. Jensen decides to ask Poppy for assistance with his emails and website, but Poppy isn’t sure it’s a great idea.

When Jensen discovers that Poppy needs to be married for one year to obtain the house her grandmother left her in a trust, he volunteers to do it if shell also help him. The plan maybe absorbed but they both agree, and she moves in with Jensen & Auggie.

They have an agreement to be married for the year until the house is signed over to Poppy, but along the way the feelings become a little to real. What happens when Jensen’s ex wife comes to town, attempting to get her family back?

I really enjoyed this story and these two quickly became favourites of mine! I loved not only the relationship that developed between Jensen & Poppy but also the relationship between Poppy & Auggie! I highly recommend not only this book, but the entire series!

Thank you Marie for the ARC!

Back to Coal Haven and back to the Duke siblings, this time for Poppy Duke. Like all Duke siblings, Poppy enters into a deal, this time she's the one who needs a husband in order to inherit a farmhouse from her grandmother. In steps Jensen Hollis to help Poppy out...

Jensen has had the hots for Poppy for a long time. When she returns to Coal Haven, North Dakota, she ends up as his son's tutor. And when she needs a husband to inherit, it's an absolute no brainer for Jensen to agree to the arrangement. They both have to learn to trust again after their respective exes as well as building a relationship with Jensen's son.

If you've read Marie Johnston before, it has all the classic hallmarks we've come to know and love. Johnston writes the marriage of convenience trope so well! There's always something refreshing about it - to me, it's really in how Johnston writes the characters. No pair of her characters react in quite the same way, and their relationships always evolve beautifully and organically.

And if you're new to Marie Johnston, this is a great place to start! Yes, other characters make cameos and are mentioned, but you won't be missing any information to Poppy and Jensen's story. If anything, you'll be picking up the rest of the books in the series and all the series that Johnston has written so get ready to fall in love a lot!

Marie Johnston has done it again. Poppy Kisses is the third installment in the Return To Coal Haven series and focuses on Poppy Duke. Full of self-discovery, small town magic, and sweet and spicy romance, this novel is the fourth Duke sibling novel. I expected to find this book a little formulaic, since each of the Duke siblings is faced with the same challenge: in order to inherit property from their grandmother’s trust, they must be married for one year. But Marie surprised me with a book full of heart and understanding. A book where characters are thoughtful and compassionate and communicate. And at this point in my life, that is dang sexy and appealing!

This book also explores dyslexia - a learning difference that impacts so many more people than we are led to believe. It is genetic, and until recently, initially treated almost as an indictment on poor parenting. As someone with a dyslexic child, I appreciate Marie’s sensitivity and thoughtfulness in her writing. It’s clear that this is an issue close to her heart (she has mentioned that she has children with dyslexia) and I felt so connected to all of the characters dealing with this neurodiversity.

Poppy Kisses can be read as a standalone (though if you start with this book you will quickly want to read the other ones in the series) and is such a marvelous book. The chemistry between Jensen and Poppy is full of magic and heat. Jensen is my new favorite single dad book boyfriend. I want to be besties with Poppy. And, once again, I’ve loved returning to Coal Haven and the Duke siblings. An absolutely delicious read.

I received a copy of this book from the author and all opinions are my own.

Poppy Kisses is another great installment in the Return to Coal Haven series, which follows the Duke siblings. This time, we get Poppy’s story. She’s back in town but doesn’t really have a place to call her own—or even a job. Luckily, she stands to inherit her grandmother’s house, but there’s a catch: she has to be married for a full year, with her father and aunt signing off on the marriage’s validity.

Poppy’s luck starts to turn when she begins tutoring a student named Auggie, who just happens to be connected to her past. Auggie’s parents are two of Poppy’s old friends—and rivals—Jensen and Hassie. Poppy has always believed Jensen was completely smitten with Hassie, and even though they’re divorced now, she still thinks there’s something between them.

When Jensen learns about Poppy’s situation, he offers her a marriage of convenience. The deal benefits him too, since he struggles with dyslexia and could use Poppy’s help with his cabinet-making business. They agree to a one-year arrangement before parting ways, but of course, things don’t stay so simple.

I love a good marriage-of-convenience trope—it’s always fun to watch how the characters toe the line between friendship, business, and something more. This story delivers that perfectly while mixing in themes of second chances and self-discovery. My only gripe was Poppy’s low self-esteem; she’s such a great character that I wanted her to see that too.

The ending was fantastic—you really don’t know how things will turn out until the very last moment. Overall, Poppy Kisses is a heartwarming, satisfying read and a perfect setup for the next book in the series.

This is book 3 of Return to Coal Haven Series and apparently I have been living under a rock because I had no clue about this series. This my first book I read in the series but now I’m hooked and definitely will be reading the first two books prior to this one. I love me a marriage of convenience romance and this book was it. Poppy needs a husband to inherit her grandmother's house and Jensen needs help with his business. The way they see it it’s a win win they help each other nothing else. I mean what can go wrong right they both know it’s an arrangement. However once she moves in with him and as time goes on, they can't deny the feelings that they have for each other. I absolutely loved these two. Poppy was a bit reluctant when it came to Jensen because of how he was when they were younger. She has it in her mind the very vivid reminder of how he would compare her to his now ex. Which left her a more than reluctant to trust him, she is scared that he will hurt her again. I honestly wanted to throttle Hassie. I mean the way she was with Jensen just was just horrible and made me want to punch her. I loved Jensen he was such a great guy,. He was this strong, capable, loyal and affectionate guy. Then we see his other side which is as a single dad. He's a fantastic father. Oh and his own Dyslexia just made him more endearing more lovable. I really enjoyed their journey together as they rekindled their friendship and navigated their feelings and built a relationship. Definitely one that I recommend you grab for sure. I will be read the first two books before Colver’s book.

“I was near feral for Poppy Duke.”

We’re back in Coal Haven thanks to Marie Johnston — and those pesky will & trust requirements! But this time it’s sister Poppy who’s getting a 2nd chance at a 1st chance with childhood friend, Jensen Hollis.

Hollis isn’t unfamiliar - but we find ourselves watching these two childhood friends get reacquainted as adults. And it’s so great to see how many things from childhood stay the same — but how we should make space for people to grow & change.
Poppy is rebuilding in a way that- Jensen needs her help too…add in a sweet little Auggie, and this trio is just sweetness defined.

I love Johnston’s writing because Coal Haven feels so familiar, the large Duke family & other supporting characters are warm, and the love story between Poppy & Jensen carries both tension (of the delicious heated variety) & tenderness. Both Poppy & Jensen are growing out of things that no longer serve them while finding the familiarity & warmth of the other when they do so.

I also appreciated how we see their love form ahead of the will stipulation; as well as the way Johnston explores & explains the challenges Jensen & Auggie face. That’s one of the things I truly love about reading — having the opportunity to be exposed to and learn about so many experiences.

Now…I have a coupon predictions for the remaining Duke siblings, and I already know I’m right on one! So I can’t wait to see how that all comes together!

Poppy Kisses Marie Johnston

This is the third book in the Return to Coal Haven series and it definitely doesn’t disappoint. Poppy and Jensen were childhood friends/rivals from kindergarten through middle school when Poppy’s family moved from Coal Haven Mt to Billings. He is a cabinetmaker now and she has a degree in Occupational Therapy and is tutoring dyslexic children until she can open her own agency. She and Jensen reconnect when they see each other while she is video tutoring his dyslexic son Auggie. As with the first two books Poppy’s grandmother set a condition to her inheritance where she can only receive the house willed to her if she is married and remains married for one year. Jensen is believing that he, like Auggie, is dyslexic and that he is losing contracting bids because of his issue. He finds out that Poppy wants to start her own clinic in part of the inherited house but has to be married to take possession so he proposes a “marriage of convenience” with her with her helping him with the dyslexia and him helping with renovations while getting her Aunt Linda off her back about the marriage being legit.
Poppy and Jensen find it easy pretending to be together and others see what they don’t, that they each only have eyes for the other.
This was fast easy read with little real drama. The premise for the next book is already being set up with Clover and her completely unlikeable fiancé Elijah.

Working my way through my arcs! I’m loving this series from @mariejohnstonwriter and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Poppy Kisses is a childhood friends to lovers, marriage of convenience, single dad, small town romance between Poppy and Jensen.

I really felt for Poppy. She’s doing the best she can, and the deal her aunt makes for her and her sisters to get their houses has really backed her into a corner. I understood how difficult it is to rid yourself of insecurities you’ve buried your whole life, and how difficult it is to start believing in yourself. I loved how Jensen gave her that confidence and really gave her a home she never thought she would have. I loved seeing her grow into the person she always wanted to be, and so many readers will be able to relate to her.

Jensen is another favorite MMC of mine in this series. The man is trying so hard to build a name for himself and his business, on top of being a single dad. I loved how protective he is of his son, and how his first thought when he makes a decision was always how it would affect him. I loved how his and Poppy’s love healed them both over time, and he started to believe in himself and trust other people again. He always puts his loved ones first, and would do anything to keep his family safe and happy. Y’all will absolutely love him.

Thank you so much to @mariejohnstonwriter and @theauthor.agency for my arc!

I love Marie’s books, but at some point I found myself wondering – how can she come up with another new, original story line with the fake marriage trope firmly in play? Well, let me tell you, she’s done it. Very little about this book is how I expected it, and that element of surprise is exactly why I love Marie’s writing. Poppy and Jensen get together to help each other, but even though Poppy is clearly attracted to grown-up Jensen she is unwilling to forgive him for all the hurt feelings he caused as a kid. Jensen is so happy to see Poppy and really does not understand at all how his behavior as a tween impacted Poppy so much, but then he’s nursing his own hurts.
I love Poppy’s passion for her work, and how much difference it makes to Jensen and his son. I’m a big fan of being educated! Jensen is not at all as expected in his thoughts, reactions, or even his reasons for how he’s behaved in the past. His self-awareness is amazing, even while he and Poppy delude themselves that they can have a physical relationship only. When that changes, it’s Jensen who wakes up to reality and sets out to prove that they can be amazing. Poppy kind of wallows in the past hurts a little bit, but I like her strength and caring soul, and I love the strength she eventually finds in herself. Another great read from Marie.

ARC Review

Tropes:
Single Dad x Tutor
Dyslexia Rep
Soccer Player/Coach FMC
Small Town
Marriage of Convenience
Fake Engagement

Although I’ve read books from this author under a different pen name, this was my first time reading Marie Johnston, and I really enjoyed it! Small town, childhood friends-to-lovers, and marriage of convenience all in one? Yes, please!

Poppy is set to inherit her grandmother’s beloved house, but there’s a catch—she has to be married for at least a year. After losing her soccer coaching job, and wanting to start her own business as a dyslexia tutor, inheriting the house to use as her office is exactly what she needs. The only problem? She has no one to marry. That is, until she runs into her childhood friend and rival, Jensen.

Jensen is a single dad struggling with dyslexia, which is starting to affect his business and threatening his ability to provide for his son. Fortunately, he comes up with a plan—marry Poppy in exchange for her help with his business.

The tension and slow burn between Poppy and Jensen was 🔥🔥🔥. I loved that they were instantly attracted to each other, but their relationship developed slowly, beginning with a strong friendship. Their friends-with-benefits fake engagement phase, while they both denied their growing feelings for each other, was my absolute favorite part.

Both Poppy and Jensen were dealing with their own personal struggles that were heartbreaking to witness. Watching them find each other again didn’t just allow them to find love and financial security—it also helped them heal their past wounds. Their gradual opening up to each other was beautiful to watch!

Poppy, Jensen, and Auggie were such a heartwarming little family. I couldn’t get enough of them! I’m excited to see what happens next in the series, especially with Violet’s story!

I'm really enjoying this fake-marriage series from Marie Johnston, and loved Poppy and Jensen's story in Poppy Kisses.

The same as her siblings, Poppy has to be married to inherit the house left to her by her late grandmother. The house is charming, but it needs a ton of work. Her former friend, Jensen, is the single dad of one of the students Poppy tutors for dyslexia, and he suspects he is dyslexic himself. They agree to get married so Poppy can help Jensen build his carpentry business in exchange for renovating the house.

I loved the added layer to this fake relationship that they used to be friends back in high school, and Jensen dated the pretty, popular girl who used to be her best friend. But you never know what goes on behind closed doors, because Jensen's marriage was anything but picture-perfect. He'd been hurt by his ex-wife, yet he had no idea that he'd said things to Poppy in the past, comparing her to his ex, that hurt her. There's a lot for this couple to work through, and since their marriage-of-convenience doesn't happen right off the bat, the reader really gets to go along for the ride as they navigate their rekindled friendship.

And when they finally get together? That slow burn was worth the wait!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

I am absolutely in LOVE with Poppy Kisses! This book has every single thing I adore in a romance: childhood rivalry, a marriage of convenience, a swoony single dad, and that delicious slow-burn tension that makes your heart ache in the best way.

Poppy returning to Coal Haven felt like coming home—not just for her, but for me as a reader. Her strength, her vulnerability, and her determination to start over had me cheering for her from page one. And then there’s Jensen… sigh. The former rival, the divorced dad with a heart of gold, the man who steps up when she needs him most. Watching him peel back his layers and fall for Poppy was pure swoon heaven.

Their banter made me grin, their chemistry was undeniable, and the way they slowly shifted from “temporary” to “forever” melted me into a puddle. The tenderness with his child, the way he protects Poppy, the moments where he lets his guard down—ugh, my heart could barely take it.

Marie Johnston has written a romance that feels so REAL—heartfelt, funny, emotional, and downright addictive. Poppy Kisses isn’t just a love story, it’s about second chances, healing, and finding forever where you least expect it. This one’s going straight to my re-read pile.
