Rate this book
Broken hearts, underground smuggling, and a meddling family ... one Wisconsin Teehaus offers a love of more than sweet treats.

November 1931---Needing a new start, Samantha Martins escapes the happily-ever-afters of her hometown to take a waitressing position at a German Tea House. But all is not as it appears beneath the pretty trappings. When she discovers illegal oleomargarine on the premises, which could shut down the cafe, and thus cost her job, she goes searching for the source.

Samantha's old beau, Kyle Docherty, returns to Crow's Nest a changed man, both inside and out. An apology burning in his heart, he finds she's left home. However, with trouble on her trail, Samantha's brother hires Kyle to be her bodyguard. But will she even speak to him? And if not, will she at least allow him to protect her, even without the arm he lost in a logging accident?

When the breadcrumbs lead them into a trap, putting Kyle's life in danger, Samantha faces an impossible listen to Kyle and run for help, or stay a captive and outwit a criminal. If only the ticking bomb were on their side.

A touch of fairy tale, a spoonful of history, and a teacup of hope.
His Boss's Little Sister is a stand-alone novella in the Apron Strings Tea Tale multi-author series, and a 1930s historical romance retelling of Hansel and Gretel.

Fans of the Harbored in Crow’s Nest series will enjoy revisiting familiar characters and discovering the HEA of the hero's little sister from Confessions to a Stranger. Readers interested in what happens next in the dairy industry can continue the story in the Unexpected Protectors trilogy.

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book. These are my honest thoughts.

What a precious story! His Boss’s Little Sister had a little bit of everything that makes this reader happy: faith, family, patriotism, tea, baking, romance, mystery, heroism, danger… and so much more! I especially enjoyed learning about the Oleo Wars of Wisconsin that I’d never known about prior to reading this book. Fascinating stuff!

The second-chance romance was sweet! There were obstacles to overcome, but it was lovely seeing Samantha overcoming hurt feelings and Kyle coming to terms with regrets and amputation (not graphically described at all, thankfully). Very nicely done!

The mystery was as delicious as the treats found in the Teehaus (German Tea House). The danger brought into the plot felt fresh, unique, and completely plausible. The characters were tested, as all Christians are, and I found myself holding my breath to see how they’d come through their trials.

This story is connected to the Harbored in Crow’s Nest series. While it likely contained spoilers for relationships from the books in that series, it did not make me feel like I missed things or couldn’t keep up with what was going on. In fact, it made me curious about the books and characters and events in those other books. Definitely reading them soon!

His Boss's Little Sister is a charming second chance at romance blended with suspense set in the 1930's. I found this story to be expertly plotted within the parameters of a shorter story. Sam has left home, seeking some independence for a fresh start. Upon taking a job at a teahouse, she discovers things are not as innocent as they seem. With the discovery of illegal oleo, she garners the help of an old friend.

I was intrigued by the mystery surrounding the illegal use of oleo. At first, it almost appeared laughable, until I looked it up. The author notes at the end provide some background on this as well. As Sam and Kyle came closer to discovering the identity of the one smuggling oleo into the teahouse, the story took on some Hansel and Gretel vibes. Definitely an original retelling of the fairytale that I found delightful.

The romance was sweet, both Sam and Kyle having grown with experience and wisdom to approach a lasting relationship with the maturity that time brings. It is my understanding that the two were secondary characters in a couple of previous stories by Ms. Grandinetti. Having not read them, I did not feel as if I was struggling to follow their story. While predictable, the romance was sweet. I would love to see a cameo appearance of this couple on a future novel.

I enjoyed reading this story that took place in Wisconsin where I lived for 12 years. It brought back memories of living in a small town surrounded by beautiful woods.
Samantha Martin moved from Crows Nest to Racine to squash the memories of Kyle Docherty and his abandoning her without a goodbye. Now, suddenly, he is back, saying that her brother wants him to protect her. They have some serious issues to put to rest. And how can Kyle protect her when he lost an arm and he still questions if he is worthy of her love.
In this second-chance romance, Kyle and Sam are faced with other problems that involve a crime. I was surprised to find out that oleomargarine was illegal at the same time as prohibition. Oleo was forbidden because it was jeopardizing the dairy industry in Wisconsin.
Facing multiple troubling situations, Kyle held on to his faith and helped Sam realize that she needed to renew her trust in God. A theme that was clear was the unity of family and their faith in God.
Another fascinating historical by Danielle Grandinetti.

My dad was born and raised on a dairy farm in Wisconsin; my mom lived in Wisconsin during her teen years. I enjoyed His Boss's Little Sister and learning some history of Wisconsin. Who knew that oleomargarine was considered illegal once upon a time? I didn't!

I also enjoyed watching the second-chance relationship between Samantha and Kyle grow as they worked together to solve problems.

If you enjoy Christian historical fiction, with a touch of mystery and a dose of romance, this is one for the TBR list.

4.5 stars rounded to 5 stars

His Boss’s Little Sister is set in Crow’s Nest, overlaps with Danielle Grandinetti’s other series, and is part of the multiauthor series Apron Strings Tea Tales. This can be read as a standalone, though it adds to the Harbored at Crow’s Nest series. This is a nod to the Hansel and Gretel story, done in a cute way that portrays Danielle Grandinetti’s style so well.

I loved this story and learned about the history of margarine/oleo in a unique way. I had never heard of this before, so it was fun. The history between Sam and Kyle was sweet. They were met with some obstacles to overcome, but they were able to figure things out in the nick of time.

This second-chance romance was sweet and perfect, with only kisses.

Danielle Grandinetti did a great job of intertwining faith throughout the novel.

What a fun return to familiar characters! I have been waiting for Sam to get her story and it was absolutely charming. Within the pages of this story, the reader gets a second chance/friends to more romance, a mystery complete with smuggling and a sweet ending. I really liked the romance elements, both Sam and Kyle have struggles to overcome, and the faith that sees them through those struggles was well written. Danielle is master at weaving stories I can not put down. I also love the 1930’s time period this story and several of her other stories are set in, she writes it so well! I’m a forever fan of Danielle and her books!

“…she’d trust him with everything except her heart.”

Le Sigh! The above quote, from Danielle Grandinetti’s The Boss’s Little Sister, is so poignant. While this book is part of the Apron String series, all books are loosely connected, involving tearooms and Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book. However, this book is very closely tied to The Harbored in Crow’s Nest series. You will want to have read all of that series to understand the backstory of the Martins family ( Samantha -Sam- and her brothers David and Patrick), plus Kyle’s backstory. Sam had thought herself in love with Kyle, but Kyle had gone away to a lumber camp, then out West, refusing to communicate with Sam or acknowledge her expressed feelings. Honestly, neither Sam nor Kyle was very likeable in previous books. So I really enjoyed watching each of them prove their maturation in this book. But, oh, the trials they go through to prove their mettle!

I have rarely wanted to truly live in a time period or place of a book setting. But 1930s Wisconsin?! Yes, please! Grandinetti has done her research and the danger in this book revolves around “The Oleo Wars” in Wisconsin. (How I wished I could have lived in a state that outlawed oleo growing up!!😂) Grandinetti’s writing caused me to do my own research into the Oleo Wars. I always consider a book that causes me to leave it long enough to research its topic on my own, a great book.

And the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel connection? I was like, I don’t see it! I didn’t see the culprit until I, too, would have been trapped! Love those kind of mysteries, where the clues are there, but there are enough red herrings that it is easy to be fooled by the ending!

I received a copy of the book from Just Read Tours. I also bought my own copy, and will be buying one for my trophy shelf. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“The day’s weariness crashed into her like a Lake Michigan wave, catching her about the knees and knocking her off kilter.” - Sam

“Margarine was outlawed from being served in restaurants, but margarine that had been turned yellow to look like butter? That was a serious offence here in Wisconsin.”

“We can’t force people to choose help, to choose love over bitterness and hate. All we can do is pray and show them compassion.” - David

“Trouble shakes out all the excess to leave only what’s true behind.”- Sam

“that’s why, when you have questions, you need to ask what’s really going on so you can learn the truth.”- Sam

“This was a mistake. The whole plan was a mistake. He shouldn’t have listened to Marian Ward Cox urge his return to Crow’s Nest. He shouldn’t have agreed to Detective O’Connor’s request to keep his niece safe. He shouldn’t have accepted David’s job offer. And he sure as foolin’ shouldn’t have let Patrick convince him that forgiveness was possible.” - Kyle

My Thoughts

His Boss's Little Sister is written. Y by Danielle Grandinetti. I’m a huge fan of this author because she always writes such unique characters and settings. In this story we’re it’s 1931 and the story is set in Wisconsin.

Samantha Martins is looking for a fresh start. She takes a waitressing position at a German Tea House. However she soon discovers that there’s more to meet the eye.
She discovers that the cafe is using the illegal oleomargarine in its day to day activities. I really didn’t know what this was and the author clearly did her research.

Kyle is Samantha’s former boyfriend. He’s returned home. He suddenly finds himself as Samantha’s bodyguard and it sure makes for an awkward situation to start. While these characters were introduced in a previous series the author writes enough back story in where you don’t feel lost.
Kyle has also lost an arm in a logging accident.

One of the things you can count on with this author is a historically accurate setting. She’s also great at writing twists and turns into the story. This is a a perfect blend of history, suspense and romance. I love the cover of this book. It might be my favorite one yet.

The characters are well written, the storyline is engaging. This author is one I will put at the top of my TBR list.

Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

I’ve loved every book I have read by Danielle Grandinetti, and His Boss’s Little Sister just cemented that fact! It also makes me want to go and read her books that I haven’t yet. There are a few characters from her Harbored in Crow’s Nest series, but not knowing them beforehand didn’t take anything away from my enjoyment of this heartwarming second chance romance. It’s also a fairy tale retelling loosely based on Hansel and Gretel.

Grandinetti sets her books in the 1930s, and I’ve really enjoyed learning more about this era of American history. It turns out that alcohol wasn’t the only thing being smuggled during this time. Oleomargarine was another. I didnt even realize that was a thing! I mean I know the names oleo and margarine, but I’ve never heard that term. In those days, the dairy industry was really struggling, and oleomargarine didn’t help matters any. People could get it for less money, and when main character Samantha aka Sam finds evidence that oleomargarine is being used at the tea shop where she waitresses, she’s determined to find out what’s going on.

I loved this about Sam’s character. She’s such a strong young woman with a protective streak. I also really enjoyed Kyle, the male main character. He had many admirable qualities which made it easy to care about him getting a second chance with Sam. Their romance and the smuggling made this such an enjoyable read. If I hadn’t started reading this at bedtime, I would have read it all in one sitting! Once I got started, it was hard for me to put this down.

I highly recommend His Boss’s Little Sister for its strong characters, intriguing plot, and sweet second chance romance. 5 stars!

Samantha takes a position at the German Tea House but gets more than she bargained for. Her old boyfriend, Kyle, returns to Crow's Nest in hopes of making up with Samantha, but ends up as her bodyguard, hired by her brother.

The adventures Samantha and Kyle find themselves involved in brings danger to both of them. The story has lots of suspense and kept me turning the pages. The danger kept coming and I wondered how it would all turn out. The story set in the 1930s was well represented.

The love of family in the story, and trusting in feelings of hope, even when things seemed impossible, was inspirational and uplifting. The ending was great and wrapped everything up nicely. Highly recommended.

One of the best things about discovering Danielle's stories this year is not only do multiple ones come out but the short ones always have the best plot lines! His Boss' Little Sister is definitely a story that a lot of people will reminisce about in the years to come. I found it to be sweet and very enjoyable.

We are introduced to Samantha who is looking for a fresh start. Unfortunately the new place she had moved to is notorious for shady things and soon her life becomes at risk. Her brother hires her a bodyguard for protection which happens to be a former boyfriend Kyle.

Will they be able to work out their issues without falling victims to the shady deals around them?

Samantha (Sam) Martins leaves her hometown for Crow’s Nest because she wants to be independent. She wants to stand on her own two feet, and she wants to mourn her broken heart away from the well-meaning but prying eyes of her family. She finds work as a waitress at a German tea house, and she’s doing all right. But then Kyle Docherty – the one who left without a word of explanation, who broke her heart – blows into town minus one arm and with instructions that he’s to act as her bodyguard at her brother’s behest. The need for some protection becomes clear when Sam finds herself embroiled in a potential crime involving illegal oleomargarine. Who is bringing the oleomargarine into the tea house? How is it getting into Crow’s Nest? Can Sam and Kyle identify the culprits before they’re taken out of the picture? And is there hope for their relationship?

I loved this book! I haven’t read any of the related books, but I got enough information on the characters from this story to follow along. (Bonus: I now want to add all the other books to my TBR.) This is also the first of Danielle Grandinetti’s books I’ve read, and again, I’d like more, please.

Sam is a delightfully headstrong young woman – a little hard-headed at times, but I can relate to that. When her sweetheart Kyle leaves town without a word, she doesn’t crumple into a heap. She picks herself up, moves, and finds a job. And Kyle. Bless his heart, y’all (in the nice way, not the sarcastic way). He realizes he did Sam wrong. He wants to atone for what he’s done. But can he convince her that she’s not just a job for him, that his feelings for her are still true and strong?

And I didn’t even know there was an oleomargarine scandal in the dairy industry in the 1930s! This is why I so enjoy historical fiction. I get to learn about things I’ve never heard of. For the record, I would have sided with the dairy farmers. My daddy always said that if God meant for him to eat margarine, then He would have made margarine come from a cow, and I concur. Butter all the way.

The mystery is engaging, the action keeps the pages turning, and the romance is swoony without being spicy. It’s got everything I like and nothing I don’t, and I give Ms. Grandinetti five stars and my future readership, because I have to get to know all her characters now!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from JustRead Publicity Tours. I was not required to leave a review. All opinions here are mine, and I don’t say nice things about books I don’t actually like.

It’s always a good day when I’m able to revisit one of my favorite small towns, Crow’s Nest, Wisconsin! I love these characters so much and was so excited when I realized that some of my favorite people from the Harbored in Crow’s Nest series were making an appearance in a new series. Who doesn’t love a good crossover!

For a shorter story, there were some pretty intense moments, and emotions were high as they always seem to be in Crow’s Nest. I learned a lot about a subject that I had no prior knowledge of, which is always a treat as I love education and entertainment, and the mystery and suspense kept me turning the pages.

I adored both Sam and Kyle, but I did feel like their second chance felt a little too easy and would’ve appreciated a little more push back. I guess they are both quick to forgive individuals, but I can also see time healing and aiding in their growth.

I would’ve loved for this novel to have been longer, and I also wish there would’ve been more of a twist as I wasn’t the least bit surprised about who the perpetrator was, but the whole Hansel and Gretel aspect was charming despite the nefarious circumstances, and it was still a satisfying conclusion to a mysterious and suspenseful story.

Historical Romance Suspense is always an intriguing genre. His Boss's Little Sister by Danielle Grandinetti is part of the Apron Spring Tea Tales series, a series written by Various Authors. I have been excited about this book since I heard it was coming out soon.

I have been anxiously awaiting this book since I read the synopsis. The setting is 1931 in Crow's Nest, Wisconsin. The main characters in this book are Samantha Martins and Kyle Docherty. Samantha is wanting something more then the Small Town living she is used to. She decides to take a job at a German TeaHouse in Racine, WI. Kyle has returned to Crow's Nest, after being away for a long while. He is quite disappointed to discover that Samantha is no longer living in their Hometown, as he and Samantha previously had a relationship. The story becomes really interesting when things at Samantha's Tea House job get a bit scary. Kyle is hired to protect Samantha, although he finds himself and Samantha in danger. I really enjoyed this story and how the predicament of danger really brought Kyle and Samantha closer to each other again. The many twists and turns in the book kept me reading. The book is short with so much packed in the book. The story is one of Second Chance Romance, Forgiveness, and Mystery. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance Suspense! AMAZING BOOK!

His Boss’s Little Sister is both a fun historical fiction novel and a fairytale retelling. It’s fun and will definitely keep you reading. This is an author that I adore, so I knew when I saw her name on the title that it was going to be amazing. It did not disappoint.

As always, this is part of a series, and I do always encourage you to read the entire series in order. Don’t skip around, don’t pass go, just read all the books!

This novel is the fairytale retelling of Hansel and Gretel, but also historical fiction.

Have you ever heard of the Oleo wars of Wisconsin? I had never heard of it, so this was fun, and I definitely did some googling on that topic. Crazy! Love that this was in the book.

It’s also a second-chance romance novel. It’s so sweet, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. You’re going to love it too. Samantha is such a sweet and fun character. She’s adventurous! Kyle wants nothing more than to keep her safe and maybe get a second chance at love.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. His Boss's Little Sister
Apron Strings Tea Tales
By Danielle Grandinetti

When Kyle Docherty left Crow's Nest, Wisconsin, behind, he did so without saying goodbye to Samantha Martens. Sam's heart was bruised by Kyle's departure. But when Kyle didn't return home, Sam was left as the odd Marten out as her brothers found love,

Determined to not be an additional burden on her brothers, Sam finds a job and lodging elsewhere. But when an illegal substance is found in the Teahouse where she works, Sam wants to find out where the margarine came from. Is someone cutting costs? Or targeting the German Tea House?

When Kyle walks back into her life, they work together to find answers and to decide if they have a future together.

This was a quick and easy read and an enjoyable spinoff of the Crow Nest series. I found myself rooting for Sam and Kyle to get a chance at having a second chance. The historical aspects surrounding margarine and the dairy industry in Wisconsin were interesting. Who knew that margarine was smuggled over state lines? I sure didn't. I knew that it was illegal but not the full extent. Fun and enjoyable.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This was a very sweet story! Samantha is trying to find her own way after Kyle leaves and apparently doesn't want anything to do with her anymore. Her old brothers and all now married and she can't stand being at home watching their happiness so she leaves for a neighboring town to work at a German Tea House. All things seem fine until she notices the oleomargarine. This is illegal at this time in the state they're in, so she quietly starts investigating what's going on and who might be responsible.
Kyle has also returned to their hometown and been enlisted by Samantha's brothers to find her, watch over her and possibly get her to come home. He shows up in town and helps her investigate, but things start to get dangerous when the person running the whole scheme catches onto what they're doing.
The romance between Samantha and Kyle was really sweet, even though Samantha was heartbroken when he left, she quickly forgives him and they start to pick up where they left off. Getting out of danger now with this criminal in town, proves to be a lot more difficult but brings out both of their strengths in the process.

This book is a full story written into a novella length and has some danger, mystery and intrigue throughout the book. It's set in 1930's southern Wisconsin amongst a time when the dairy farmers are struggling and smugglers are trying to bring the cheaper oleomargarine into Wisconsin where it's banned. This book is part of a larger series of books for her Crow's Nest Series but also in a new multi-author "Apron Strings Tea Tales" series, but is a standalone if you just read this one.

This one is a Christian fiction book with bible references and references to Christian faith. It has a positive message overall and shows a character overcoming losing an arm in an accident and working to move past the disability preferring to "choose hope over bitterness." It also shows the characters growing in faith as they fall back in love in this second chance romance.

I really enjoyed this book and the length is just perfect for the story. I had the opportunity to read an ARC of this book provided by the author. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I very much enjoyed reading the second chance of Kyle and Samatha’s relationship and their eventual happily ever after. This is a beautiful redemptive, second chance, inspirational, historical romance set in the 1930’s centered around a German tea house in Fox Dune Hollow, Wisconsin. This is where Samatha is working after leaving her home, family and business behind in order to get away from reminders of her broken heart and to show that she is independent and capable of taking care of herself. Then Kyle comes back into her life and as they start to rebuild their relationship they get caught up in danger by the German lady who owns the tea house and is smuggling contraband oleomargarine. Plenty of romance, suspense, intrigue and danger to keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next in this fantastic suspenseful historical novel. I received a complimentary copy of this book and am not required to write a positive review. This is my honest and voluntary opinion.

Think back to the time when butter was the staple that everyone used, except now they have come up with something they say could be a substitute for the wonderful taste of butter. Small problem - that was undermining the struggling dairy industry in Wisconsin. Somehow whenever something is illegal, it seems it needs to be smuggled.

Samantha, angry that she was left behind by her true love, Kyle, moves away from Crow’s Nest to Fox Dune Hollow to work as a waitress. Kyle comes to find her, hoping for forgiveness and a second chance. But something is churning under the surface - will they uncover it before someone gets hurt?

The Apron Strings Tea Tale was received through Hearth Spot Press and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

This was a sweet romance set in Wisconsin during the oleomargerine war of the 1930s. It’s also an interesting take on the fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel.” While it’s mostly romance, there is some fast paced escaping at the end. If you enjoy second chance romances, you’ll probably enjoy this novella.

I received a copy of this novella from the author, but the statements in this review are my own. No part of this review was influenced by the author.

What an entertaining and heartwarming book with some mystery, suspense and history all mixed in. Set in the 1930’s during a problem with the dairy farmers and a black market that was part of their problem, this book delves into the history of the era and the everyday challenges of those just trying to survive during hard times. Sam leaves Crow’s Nest determined to make it on her own, or at least get away from her happily married brothers whose happiness is like a cup of ice water thrown into her face. After all, Kyle, the man she loved, had left her behind when he went to work in the lumber industry, so Sam leaves town, too, and works as a waitress in a small town with some smuggling going on. The mystery is finding out who is responsible for the smuggling and the suspense is how Sam and Kyle get back together again and have to face a dangerous adversary. I really enjoyed the portrayal of the characters, all of whom were realistic and relatable. The plot was fast-paced and absorbing and made me want to know more about the problems of the dairy farmers. This is an enticing book, filled with the charm of a second chance love story and the hope of those newly in love and working towards a future together.
