Sometimes we want the things we aren't supposed to have. Moving back to Las Vegas after college was supposed to be my fresh start. I was going to land my perfect new job, make the world a better place, and finally mend my relationship with my father. At least that was the plan before I saw Reed Randolph that night in the casino. I think I’ve always been in love with Reed Randolph. From elementary school until now, he’s always been my fantasy. He’s dark, gorgeous, successful, and sexy. A one night stand of mind-blowing sex – that was all it was supposed to be. The only problem? I just found out he’s my new stepbrother. My dad ran off to Costa Rica, married Reed’s mom, and now Dad’s going to run for office again – a move that’s sure to bring a herd of reporters to the door. And all I can think about is wanting to sleep with Reed again. Forbidden desire, a bitchy stepmother, and a very strained relationship with my dad … my life is just a little complicated right now. My life is a mess. A beautiful, sexy mess. Part One of a Two-Part SeriesScroll Up and Click 'BUY NOW' to Start Reading Today
Lots of criticism is following this book because there was no warning that this is not a full novel and that there is a big cliffhanger awaiting readers at the end. The second installment is scheduled for release in February 2015. I bought it for 99-cents which I felt was a fair deal, along with the fact that it is a short story with an almost novella feel to it, I wasn’t totally upset. Waiting until February isn’t going to make a whole lot of difference for me.
It happens in Las Vegas, baby – and regardless of what you’ve been told, everything that happens there doesn’t always stay there. Tatum and Reed met when they were in grade school, but when Tatum’s parents divorced, she moved to Texas to live with her mom and finish high school. When we meet her, she has just graduated from law school and returned to Las Vegas to find a job and try and make amends with her dad, who has some problems of his own. Reed grew up in Vegas with a young single mom who wasn’t the best at being a mom. He now owns a very popular and successful tattoo business, Ink. A chance meeting in a hotel bar brings Tatum and Reed together again in a wild and sex-filled one night stand. Tatum leaves early the next morning while Reed is still asleep.
Their next face-to-face is also quite by accident and will stun and shock them both. What happens after that? Well, you'll just have to read it for yourselves to find out all the challenges and secrets rolled into this story that are soon to be exposed. I must admit that I found this to be a fun-filled wildly sexy romp with two fairly interesting and lovable individuals who’ll have you cheering them on – even when it seems they are on a path to self-destruction.
I can't end this without mentioning that this is a classic case of the book cover just not working! Too bad, too. Those clean cut youngsters on the front are cute and would make nice cover art for another book. But it's definitely not for this one. This cover does no justice to the couple between the pages or their story.
What is this supposed to be? Why call a book Step brother if the characters don't give one shit that they're technically related. What does it have to do with the plot line if it doesn't affect their relationship one bit?! I read recently that if you are a writer you should never leave bad reviews but I disagree, I am big on honesty. I cannot lie and say I enjoyed this and I would NEVER want someone to lie about enjoying my writing. Yu learn from your mistakes. And this was a mistake. I felt nothing reading this. No heat, no chemistry, no tension. And for a romance that is terrible. The main character is annoying and unrealistic. She states everything repeatedly and she is boring. I feel like I am reading front he pov of that slug in monsters inc. just boring. And reed is the exact same way. There is no difference in their personalities, there is one instance where he says 'you're so wet' or something along those lines. He just states it. No mention of feelings, no heat. Just fact. How are you meant to believe this is a hot passionate romance when there is no passion. They are boring drones. I literally skimmed 30% of the end. I just couldn't focus on it. And the end. What the??? She decides she never wants to see him again because he didn't tell her his fathers last name? Talk about melodramatic. This was just completely unbelievable. Her parents/step parents are dull and cliche, the entire story feels fake. This isn't a stepbrother/sister romance, this is a one night stand don't know how to deal with it. They never mention any past, she says she had a crush on him but never thinks of it again. I think about the people I crushed on in 'middle school' more than she does and I never slept with them! It almost bored me to sleep, and I am someone who does not fall asleep reading, but actually puts the book down and takes a nap if I'm tired. But I almost feel Asleep while holding my iPad it was just impossible to get into. This needs a lot of work. I don't even know if the story could ever be any good, maybe with a little character development and not random blowups at the dinner table, and some realism, not PITY ME PITY ME attitude. She dislikes her father, why? Talk about it, explain to the reader an event which caused the relationship to spiral, give details. A story can never have too many details, describe the night together, the crush, the family issues. Go into depth. Put some passion in the sex, make it a little realistic. And STOP STATING EVERYTHING. I want to know what she felt not what physically happened. This felt like a summary for it. Not an actual book. Back to the point. Lots and lots of editing, some writing classes, lots of character development, plot fix up, and a few other key things you should figure out from the classes. And maybe, MAYBE, the story might be ok. But as it is now. I hated it. And it takes a lot for me to hate a book.

I nice fast past new adult romance. I like the characters although did feel Tatum did a 360 with her whole outlook of her and Reed in the early parts of the book, it just seemed a little out of character I felt.
Reed also comes across as a love sick puppy at times which feels out of character then we get scenes like when they are in the car at the airport - feels a bit too dominant.
Either way I liked the book, I will read part 2 and wasn't bothered there was a cliffhanger as it's well advertised that's how the book ends - 3.5 stars.
I liked this book, but I really wish it had been more clear that it was the first in a series. It ended rather abruptly and now I have to wait to see what happens next.
I liked Tatum and I loved Reed but I think with a little more character development I could have liked her even more. Parts of the story seemed rushed so again, a little more development there might have better.
One thing I didn't really understand is why Reed felt that he couldn't tell Tatum who his dad was, especially since he stayed in Europe longer than he expected to. And I also didn't fully grasp why Tatum was so afraid of being in the public eye again. I know she was traumatized by her dad's arrest when she was in high school but really all we were told is that she had to move out of town to her mom's when he went to jail. I would have liked to know more about how her life was impacted by his actions.
With all that being said, I will be keeping an eye out for book #2 And will just hope this isn't going to be one of those series with multiple books that end each segment almost mid-sentence.
I liked this book, but it lacked any real depth, at times it feels rushed. which is a shame because it could have easily have been a star read! i felt there wasnt the connection there for me to be able to get to know the characters, there was lack of connection, for eg when reed went to meet his dad, its very vague, you dont get much info on what happened once there, in fact you dont actually get to know if he meets his dad or anything, as you flit to the next situation, they are off for a meal and the paps are taking pics.. thats when there is an indication he met hi real dad, what happened between them its a guess! there is lack of info on what happened between both main character to make the relationship with their parents so strained or why the parents are the way they are. This book ends on a cliff hanger, i look forward to the next book but i DO hope it's the conclusion, though!
I really liked this read and since it was free and winding down too fast I figured there was a cliffy in store for me....wait for #2. Might not happen because if I got to wait I lose the vibe of the story and sometimes just plain forget. I hope I don't do that with this one. I thought the story was pretty predictable but several threads came together and blew me away on the surprise of it all. I like the back and forth POV throughout which is quite effective in learning the mind of the charters well. Good book. Write one big book sometime. I like you and would pay to read it. The cover almost made me want to pass as it is very high school looking and these characters aren't that innocent looking.
I got this as part of the kindle unlimited package. I was expecting much, so imagine my surprise that I was delighted by the story telling considering this was another step book. Honestly, it would have been easy to forget with the exception every now and then as the reader your reminded. I get the feeling that the steps were added as an afterthought considering they are all the rage now.
I'll definitely be on the lookout for the next installment of this series. My only hope is that Jana King continues to utilize the kindle unlimited program.
So there are just a few things I'd like to say. First at the beginning of this book I was just bored. and unsure if I was going to like it. Then toward the middle I started getting into the book. Tatum sounds like a girl with alot of things going on in her life. Reed is the HOT bad boy that she needs. and I can tell you this Jayna King you did a great job with this book. just the right amount of everything mixed together. great job!! Can't wait for the next one to come out.
I liked the opening of the book, I thought I would really get into the story. But then it got kinda tame. Tatum and Reed hook up before they even know their parents have gotten married. But they can't fight their attraction. But after the first chapter, it's pretty much a PG-13 movie after that. I didn't feel a whole lot of chemistry. But still an enjoyable story. But I won't be waiting for book 2 :/
I will not be reading book/part 2. I barely survived this book. I just didn't care for the characters. Also, based on some reviews the H hooks up with other girls in book 2. After reading this book I find that easy to believe. I got this on impulse many months ago, right before the whole "Stepbrother" thing threw up all over my Kindle e-books site.
No where did I see this is part one to a series so you can imagine my anger and out rage, to find out as I go and change the page. They should always make sure you know. Other than than I loved the story and I will get the second half just wish I knew before hand.
This is not the best book I've ever read but it was ok. I wasn't in love with Reed, he was a bit of an ass, supposedly being in love with his stepsister and yet he was attracted and ready to fuck other women all too easily! As for Tatum, she was quite immature and whiny and I didn't especially feel the attraction between them so overall it was just an ok story.
The book starts of with Tatum graduating from college and having a one night stand with the guy she's liked since grade school, Reed. A few hours after she's been with Reed she finds out that her dad is married to Reed's mom. They fall for each other but can their love survive?
Really enjoyed the connection and chemistry between Tatum and Reed. However, be warned! There's a cliffhanger!!
Both Tatum and Reed have had their share of misery and difficult relationships with their respective parents. It was a great read and I look forward to reading the next book - hope it's the conclusion, though!
Thought it was a standalone but it's not. Now I have to wait til February to find out the rest of the story. Not that I didn't love the book, just was very upset of the ending. Need more, want more and mad I gotta wait.
Again I found a book and characters that I love... I can wait for the second book to come out and find out what happens to them. I hope they find their happy ever after.
I enjoyed this story... right up until the cliffhanger! The story line is great, unlike a few of the stepbrother romances I've read lately, and I would really like to find out what happens with Tatum & Reed. I'll be getting Book 2.
I enjoyed the book. A bit predictable in places. It winds me up all the carry on as there is no blood relationship what is the problem. I maybe shouldn't read this kind of book
You can't just end a book abruptly and throw out part two to follow! No where did it say this was a serial or novella. I bought this thinking it was a stand alone!
