Fans of Ann Cleeves, Riley Sager and Caroline Graham (Midsomer Murders) will enjoy unravelling the mystery and dissecting the clues in in The Deaths at Mansfield Grammar.
Dark academia, an isolated setting, and disturbing secrets fill the pages of this addictive murder mystery. As a retired teacher, I could relate to many of the frustrations Minnie faced at Mansfield Grammar —annoying and entitled students, a clueless administration, and questionable coworkers to name a few. Luckily for me, the similarities end there. Shortly after the start of her new teaching position, bodies start to accumulate along with unanswered questions. Suicide or murder? Student or faculty? Who is behind the dangerous deadly cloud that hangs over the school? This mystery kept me guessing until the shocking conclusion. The plot was perfectly paced and unpredictable. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it definitely will not be the last. Thank you BookSirens for my copy.
Minnie Fox goes to a boarding school to teach after her husband dies. She arrives at the boarding school looking for a fresh start, and lands in the middle of a mystery involving a student. Are Minnie’s new co workers keeping secrets? Who is involved?
A well paced thriller, and the author keeps you guessing.

This book was amazing — it kept me guessing right till the end. Murder mysteries aren’t usually my thing, but this one totally hooked me. It goes a lot darker than the blurb lets on, yet Jardim handles it in such a thoughtful, cool way. Huge thanks for the advanced copy — I can’t wait to read more from her.
ARC Review: The Deaths at Mansfield Grammar by Natasha Jardim
This was an interesting and enjoyable murder mystery that kept my attention throughout most of the story. The premise is intriguing, and I appreciated the way the mystery unfolded within the setting of Mansfield Grammar—it added a nice layer of atmosphere and tension.
Overall, the plot was engaging, and I found myself invested in uncovering what had happened. That said, the ending felt a bit dry and somewhat unsatisfying compared to how strong the buildup was. I was hoping for a more impactful conclusion after such an interesting mystery.
I also noticed that some of the scene transitions felt rough and choppy, which occasionally disrupted the flow of the story. With smoother transitions and a more developed ending, this could have been an even stronger read.
Still, this was an enjoyable mystery, and fans of the genre will likely appreciate the intrigue and setting.
Unfortunately, this book did not align with my reading preferences. As an enthusiast of thrillers, I found this one lacking. The writing style was not to my liking. The book's pace was slow, with some areas feeling excessively prolonged. While the characters were well-developed, the book was merely average.
Thanks to Book Sirens for sending me an advanced copy to read and review
I might be a tad biased because I'm also a teacher like the FMC but... this book slaps. Dark academia murder mystery?? Yaass please. Ms. Minnie Foxy just wants to teach, and instead she’s knee-deep in bodies and secrets at the creepiest fancy school ever! I was living for every page.
I received an ARC of this as an ebook in exchange for a review!
This book takes place at an isolated, elite boarding school in Australia, where teachers/ students keep showing up missing or dead. In addition to the deaths breaks a juicy scandal. Are the deaths & disappearances connected to the scandal? Are they suicides or murders? The newest teacher on campus, Minnie, is committed to getting to the bottom of it all. Dark academia vibes mixed with mystery, this story kept me gripped from start to finish. Clue vibes meets boarding school. I was able to pick up on some clues throughout the book but was surprised how it all came together in the end. A good beach/ lounge read and easily binge able. This would make a great tv series. 3.5⭐️⭐️⭐️💫Thank you again for choosing me as an early reader!!
Minnie arrives at the prestigious Mansfield Grammar hoping for a fresh start after her husband’s death, but instead finds herself tangled in a school full of secrets, unexplained deaths, and tension that makes the entire campus feel unsettling.
This book was twisty, mysterious enough that it kept me guessing, and shocking without trying too hard, however, the pacing dragged a bit in the middle for me. It did get itself together by the end though.
If you love dark murder mysteries with shady teachers, suspicious students, and a fancy school hiding ugly things under the polished surface, this one is for you.
I was lucky enough to be gifted a copy of The Deaths at Mansfield Grammar by the author and am so grateful. Really enjoyed it!
This is quite different to what I would normally read to be honest and did have to make sure I was in bed next to my husband to read most of it in case I got nightmares - I am a bit of a wuss 😂
But I was hooked from just a few chapters in and loved the character of Minnie. She was instantly likeable as a strong, intelligent woman who wasn’t going to be pushed around.
It had me guessing throughout and although I had an inkling that one of the characters was involved there were lots of surprises and unexpected twists and last night I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished so stayed up way too late 😴
I liked that there was some familial connection with Minnie and Rob as that gave another depth to the story and his relationship with Minnie was protective and sweet.
I also liked the character of Kai and Wes - Wes’ humour was brilliant 🤪
✨✨✨✨✨
Would highly recommend this if you like a good mystery and don’t mind a bit of a dark read as some of the themes touch on suicide and abuse.
Minnie is a new teacher at the prestigious Manfield Grammar Boarding school. She is replacing a teacher that left on hiatus suddenly. As she is trying to get her bearings on the school a fellow teacher ends up dead and she and a few fellow teachers start to investigate the disappearance of the teacher she is replacing. I never guessed what really was going on or that the secret "crew" on school grounds goes so deep. This goes to show that you never can really know who to trust.

The Deaths at Mansfield Grammar is a dark academia mystery novel full of secrets and unreliable characters. Thank you to BookSiren for this free ARC in return for my honest opinion on the novel. To me, this was a three star because of the pacing being slow at times and every other chapter I found myself losing interest. For someone who reads thrillers a lot this one was a good time, but unfortunately nothing memorable. This novel would be great for anyone who likes a mystery involving a school with somewhat likeable characters.
Thank you to the Q Quarter and Goodreads for the free Kindle book!
Overall a good read but it felt a bit lacking in believability. The dialogue felt off for me (probably just me) and it didn’t always hold my interest because of this. I would still recommend it to anyone who likes a prep school mystery!
Minnie Fox is a recently widowed schoolteacher who arrives to take up a post at Mansfield Grammar, a privileged boarding school in the mountains of Victoria, Australia. The previous English teacher, whose job Minnie is taking over, has left the school suddenly under mysterious circumstances, and Minnie also learns that a student died on the school grounds the previous term. Before long, more bodies start appearing and Minnie takes it upon herself to solve the mystery whilst working out which of the staff and students she can trust.
This had a lot of elements that I love - a classic Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery set in a creepy boarding school - but whilst I did enjoy it overall there was something about the pacing that meant it didn’t quite land for me. Although the setting was atmospheric there was a lack of tension and build up at certain points which meant that big reveals lacked the impact they needed. I would personally have liked more about the investigation and less about the staff politics too, and I got quite confused trying to remember who all the characters were. The pace did pick up in the second half, however, and it kept me turning the pages to find out what was going on. I enjoyed Minnie as a main character and liked the way her backstory was revealed - I would definitely like to read more about her!
Overall this was an enjoyable quick read with an atmospheric setting and a plot to keep you guessing. Recommended for fans of crime novels with a contemporary dark academia setting and vintage murder mystery vibes.

I chose this book because I felt drawn to it, and it sounded like something that I would enjoy. The story takes us to Victoria, Australia, where the main character, Minnie Fox, has accepted a post at Mansfield Grammar School. I found Minnie an interesting character, and I was interested in the way she interacted with the other characters. She didn't seem to become friendly with many of the other characters, but I felt that was understandable given her situation.
This didn't really feel like a cosy mystery, but on this occasion, I don't think I was looking for cosy. There was definitely a good amount of suspense in the writing, and I did find this a page turner. There is something about a school setting that I always enjoy, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of Mansfield Grammar.
Thank you to Booksirens and the author for a free copy to review.
I really enjoyed this modern murder mystery set in a luxurious and exclusive 19th-century boarding school, home to 900 students, teachers, and staff. We follow Minnie Fox, a young widow who is just beginning her new job at the grammar school—and what a wild introduction she gets!
The writing, plot, and pacing were all excellent, and the ending was particularly bonzer! I correctly suspected one of the perpetrators, but rather than spoiling the experience, it made the reveal even more satisfying. While the ending felt slightly abrupt it was after all the explaining was completed.
A quick heads-up for readers: there is a fair amount of swearing throughout the book and references to an assumed suicide/s.
I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys a compelling murder mystery with strong boarding school, teaching, and atmospheric vibes!

Dark, unsettling, and unexpectedly emotional, The Deaths at Mansfield Grammar immediately drew me in with its school setting—particularly as a teacher and longtime crime fiction reader.
The characters felt vividly drawn, especially Minnie, whose backstory added real emotional depth to the novel. The pacing is confident throughout, steadily tightening the tension while delivering twists that genuinely caught me off guard.
What I found most compelling was the novel’s willingness to explore the darker side of human behaviour. Some scenes highlighting the cruelty of students were genuinely difficult to read at times, precisely because they felt emotionally believable.
Without revealing too much, the ending was far more disturbing than I anticipated, but it worked brilliantly. I’m already looking forward to the follow-up.
Recently widowed Minnie Fox starts a new adventure at a prestigious grammar school full of rich and entitled brats (ok, not all of the pupils, but a lot). There's a mysterious disappearance, then teachers start turning up dead, and Minnie wonders what she's got herself into. With a bit of amateur sleuthing, all is revealed in the end. I didn't guess the ending, and yes, while it might seem unrealistic, does that actually matter?!
Overall a good read, maybe not as fast-paced as I would prefer but easy enough to get lost in the drama.

The hook: Minnie takes on a teaching job at a private school after the death of a student and the disappearance of a teacher. As she settles into the new school, staff start turning up dead. Minnie’s own investigations bring her into danger. Will she uncover the truth or will she end up dead, too?
My thoughts: I really enjoyed this. It was dark and suspenseful with enough twisty plot to keep me hooked.
I particularly wanted to read this as it combines two of my loves - teaching and thriller books. Jardim captured the demands and stresses of teaching and created a storyline that felt all too believable.
A highly atmospheric and engaging read. 4 1/2 stars 🌟
This was such an interesting read and definitely gave me major Clue vibes!! 🕯️🔪
An elite school for the rich & privileged 💸 A teacher who suddenly takes leave 🌴 A suicide 💀 Mysterious deaths 🔪 And absolutely everyone is a suspect 🤨
I really enjoyed the slower, more deliberate pace of this one. The carefully laid clues and subtle twists kept me intrigued the entire time.
It had that classic whodunit feel where you’re constantly trying to piece everything together before the final reveal.
Honestly, I would love to see the FMC unravel another mystery!!
Following the death of her spouse, Minnie lands a teaching position at the prestigious Mansfield Grammar. However, not everything is as it seems at the school and the bodies begin piling up.
This was an easy, steady read, but I was able to partially predict who was involved early on. The biggest drawback back for me was the lack of believable reactions from the police, school officials, and parents as things escalated. Still an entertaining read with a dark premise.

3.5 stars Thank you Natasha Jardim for allowing me to be part of your review team 📖.
The Deaths at Mansfield Gramma, is an interesting murder mystery set in a prestigious boarding school, where a new school teacher finds out about a death that happened the term before, as well as the mysterious departure of her predecessor. Each chapter keeps you guessing about why the previous teacher had left and where they had gone.
As an avid murder mystery fan, I did find the overall ending to be a bit obvious but was still a gripping read. I do recommend this book for to murder mystery fans.
I got chosen to join the review team for this dark academia book. Thrillers are my go to genre and I’m happy to say that this one did not disappoint! I enjoyed the story, it was fast paced and fits the genre well. I truthfully did not guess the twist and when I did guess, I was wrong! I will definitely continue reading books by this author as she releases them. The characters and storyline were interesting, I will say it wasn’t like one I’ve read before so it didn’t feel repetitive. I highly recommend reading this book.
I overall really enjoyed this book. It was a relatively quick read because the writing flowed very well. The plot was interesting and kept me intrigued the whole time. I would have awarded 5 stars except I figured out a bit of the reveal pretty early on. I also would recommend clear trigger warnings as the end of the book ramps up pretty quickly. Would definitely check out more by this author! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
ARC review This novel had an appropriately scintillating premise, but I found its biggest issue was the long-winded passages in between any and all dialogue and action that really interfered with the pace.
With a bit more focus on concision and less on unnecessary specifics about the life of a teacher, this may have better suited the crime-mystery genre. Instead it felt like a bit of a weird hybrid that didn’t sustain my attention particularly well.
I was excited to read The Deaths at Mansfield Grammar because the premise promised exactly the kind of dark academic mystery I love: elite school drama, buried secrets, and a tense atmosphere humming beneath polished hallways. Natasha Jardim delivers a story that feels sharp and immersive from the very beginning, balancing suspense with emotional depth in a way that kept me turning pages late into the night.
I really enjoyed this book - the pacing was good, the MC was determined, the setting was interesting, and the storyline was unpredictable. I would happily read other works by this author. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thanks to BookSirens, publishers and author for an ARC of The Deaths at Mansfield Grammar.
This book had great premise, and should have been a gripping quick read. Instead it was a dragging storyline which I had to force myself to pick up at times.
Loved the dark academia setup and “people are dying to teach here” premise. The pacing drags hard - not enough momentum. Solid twist, just took too long to get there. 3/5 for vibes.
