Lorraine Brown previously trained as an actress and is about to complete her final year of a postgraduate diploma in psychodynamic counselling. She lives in London with her partner and their 8-year-old son. Uncoupling is her first novel.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 My favourite enemies to lovers romance this year🤩
Scarlett’s novel hasn’t sold as well as she had hoped and her agent tells her she’s got one last shot of being a successful author: publishing another co-written book with Theo Winters. Scarlett can’t think of anything worse. Theo is arrogant and they’ve got a bit of history. However, she’s a carer for her vulnerable father and desperate for money… so she agrees. Reluctantly, Theo agrees too and they end up on a writer’s retreat in the sunny Côte d’Azur, courtesy of their agent. But - all isn’t what it seems. When they arrive, it turns out they’re on a couples retreat instead! Furious, Scarlett and Theo have to navigate the complexities of the situation and figure out how on earth to start, let alone finish their book, when they literally can’t be around each other without driving each other crazy. Will they finish their book? Will they even start it? Will the retreat reveal anything else that’s been simmering?
✨ This book is absolutely phenomenal. It’s fun and the narrative voice is just so relatable and easy to engage with. I love the idea behind the book and it’s engaging the whole way through. I also really enjoyed some of the supporting characters like Carla, Melissa and Claire. The book had an important message for me, particularly as someone who is also a carer: you can’t be there for someone all the time - there has to be a point where you put yourself first. 🩵 Lorraine Brown has done it again🤩🩵👏🏻
Perfect book for a beach read which was exactly what I was doing in Madeira.
What to expect: - Miscommunication Trope (Massively) - Second Chances - Described as enemies to lovers but I personally wouldn't call them that - No Spice- not like that's a bad thing I personally like a bit of spice thrown in
Scarlett is a struggling writer after parting ways of the success of her debut where she collaborated with Theo a fellow writer. She hasn't had the sales of her books since going solo. Her editor decides that Scarlett needs to write with Theo again and sends them both on a writers retreat. Only to both there horrors that it isn't a writers retreat at all but a couples retreat.
I loved the idea of this book and was looking forward to reading it. I did read in one sitting I wanted to see how it was going to plan out. But I struggled in places I felt the pacing was off, especially in the middle- it felt very slow going. However near the end everything felt very rushed. I didn't feel the chemistry between Scarlett and Theo it felt forced. I also didn't enjoy the miscommunication trope So much could of been resolved if the pair just talked to each other properly.
Thank you Netgalley and Orion for a copy of the book for an honest review. Sorry for the late review.
Tropes: Miscommunication Enemies to Lovers Second Chance Fade to Black Forced Proximity Single POV Slow Burn
This is the second book I have read from Lorraine Brown and I have to say I preferred this more than 5 Days in Florence. I loved Couples Retreat the book cover, the plot, characters all chef's kiss.
Firstly, I loved the concept of the story. The Couples Retreat idea provides hilarious and uncomfortable suitations for our two main leads. The couples yoga cracked me up with the awkward positions and while it was funny, the tension also oozed off the pages. The tension between Scarlett and Theo was delicious to read you were like God damm it just kiss ha ha. I also liked the emotional side to of the retreat because it put our characters on a journey of self discovery as they identify their flaws, insecurities really digging deep into themselves and their relationship and learning to slowly overcome those hurdles and heal.
Both the main leads are very likeable. I loved Scarlett. I really enjoyed reading her POV, and I loved Theo as well. My heart went out to both of them. Brown gave them both depth, and made them relatable to readers. I loved the secondary characters as well Claire being my favourite. I love how Brown gave all the secondary characters their own story and depth and using a range of topics that arise in today's society making all these characters feel so real.
In regards to Theo and Scarlett's relationship they did indeed have chemistry. As I already pointed out I loved reading the tension between them and I enjoyed the enemies to lovers spark. I also loved the slow burn as their relationship gradually progressed and they slowly lowered their walls around each other. Now I know some people hate the miscommunication trope but I think it was done nicely in this story it suited to the characters given that they are both guarded and their childhoods also played a part as well. It was really interesting reading how your childhood influences you and your relationships as you grow up. I knew about the attachment theory and all that as I studied psychology so I really loved reading all about that in the book and it really gets you thinking of things such as the nature vs nurture debate, external factors etc.
Also I just wanna say I loved the idea of the characters being authors and the insights we got into the writing world, how it all works, the process, etc. I loved the chapters when Theo and Scarlett wrote their book, planning the plot, building their characters etc it was all so fascinating to read and part of me wished their books were real so I can read them lol.
This review is being posted as part of the Couples Retreat blog tour hosted by Rachel’s Random Resources.
Couples Retreat is the latest romcom from romance author Lorraine Brown. Fans of enemies to lovers, forced proximity and a good second chance romance, this is the book for you! Add in a gorgeous French Riviera setting, a couples retreat, two author main characters and palpable sexual tension and you’ve got Couples Retreat, the perfect feel-good beach read for 2024.
This was my first time reading anything from Lorraine Brown but I was instantly hooked by the plot and read the entire book in a single sitting. I’m a sucker for a forced proximity book and thought the concept was really intriguing and it certainly did not disappoint. The story was brilliantly paced and the vivid descriptions of the French Riviera setting made me feel like I was on holiday myself.
There was a wonderful bookish theme throughout the whole story. As a book blogger it was really interesting to see a bit of a behind the scenes of how a book is written, particularly when it’s a collaboration between two authors. I really wanted to read both their first book Little Boy Lost and the book they write over the course of the story! One brief moment I thought was particularly impactful was when the characters were exploring why they love books, sharing that they’ve used reading and creating stories since they were young as an escapism tool for managing challenging experiences.
Scarlett was a fantastic relatable protagonist who I warmed to instantly. We see wonderful character growth in her over the course of the book, with Scarlett realising that it’s ok to put boundaries in place in order to put herself first for a change. Theo was another fantastic character and brilliant love interest who, like Scarlett, also has wonderful character growth as we see him begin to learn how to open up emotionally to others.
Scarlett and Theo had brilliant chemistry and their slow burn romance, full of almost kisses and palpable sexual tension, had me practically screaming at them to hurry up and kiss already. Although I don’t tend to be a fan of second chance romances, the way their relationship history was drip fed to us through the retreat’s activities was very compelling, particularly within the setup of the therapy sessions as Scarlett and Theo gradually open up to the wider group. This is a closed-door romance and although I thought I’d miss a spicy element to the story, it actually worked really well.
Although this is at heart a feel-good summer romance, it also doesn’t shy away from some hard-hitting topics which was great to see. I thought the exploration of parentification through Scarlett taking on a role as a surrogate mother to her younger siblings at the young age of just nine was particularly powerful. There is also brilliant panic attack representation and other important topics represented include adults caring for their ill parents, the impact of adverse childhood experiences on adult relationships and attachments and, briefly through the side characters, fertility issues and IVF. With the story being set on a couples retreat the whole story is very therapy-positive which is brilliant to see as I think society generally shies away from discussing therapy and the benefits it can have.
If you are looking for a feel-good romance as your holiday read for 2024 which is packed full of your favourite tropes, look no further than Couples Retreat.

Two struggling writers find themselves forced to spend time together where romance unexpectedly blooms in this charming, witty and entertaining contemporary romance by Lorraine Brown: Couples Retreat.
Scarlett and Theo are both writers who had once co-written a psychological crime thriller that had been an instant bestseller. Unfortunately, when they had parted ways and attempted to strike out on their own, the books they had written had tanked spectacularly. And their publishers have noticed and are getting tired of giving them second chances. Scarlett and Theo need to write a bestseller and the only way they can save their career is by going off to a writers retreat in France. Only, it turns out that the retreat they’ve been sent on is not for writers, but for couples! What are Scarlett and Theo going to do now?
With their careers on the line, the two writers have run out of options. They need to stick it out and find a way of writing a book that will put them back in the publishing industry’s good books. Ideas soon begin flowing – and sparks quickly start flying too as Theo and Scarlett find themselves getting closer and closer. Romance is the very last thing on both their minds, but as their feelings for one another escalate, will Scarlett and Theo write their own happy ending? Or will there be an unexpected red herring that tears them apart forever?
Lorraine Brown’s Couples Retreat is so much fun! A gorgeous, funny and heartwarming romantic tale infused with warmth, humour and emotion, Couples Retreat is a terrific read about second chances, new beginnings and cupid’s arrow striking at the most inopportune moment where the pages will just turn themselves.
A glorious summer read perfect for romantics everywhere, Couples Retreat is a must-read by fast-rising start Lorraine Brown.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This felt slightly underdeveloped, like it was still a second draft but the publisher accidentally gave a go ahead for printing and they realised after it was already too late.
Writing a book about writers is a hell of a task and it seems like Brown has attempted it a bit too early in her career? Why did the parts of them writing the book look like this: „Okay let’s focus on the writing. Blah blah blah, I’m opening my laptop and writing a couple of pages…. Okay, that should be enough for now. Shall we grab a drink?”
My main problem with the book was there’s been a lot of telling me something happened rather than the actions describing what was going on. I know it’s a book and not a movie, but SHOW ME WHAT HAPPENED. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I wish there were some flashbacks chapters from when they were writing the first book, maybe I would have felt the chemistry a lot more. Even a dual POV would do wonders.
In regards to them being enemies… miscommunication does not equal being enemies Ughhh. Just because they didn’t talk to each other for years and were once interested in each other doesn’t mean it’s an enemies to lovers trope for god’s sake!!!
Some characters were lacking depth. For the first half of the book Theo was giving ✨nothing✨, like a plain, soggy oatmeal. Then the contradictions happened - he was deemed a fuckboy, but also an introvert? Make it make sense. Scarlett seemed slightly better, but her being a human doormat, used on a daily basis by her family, was upsetting to read about. I’m glad she stood up for herself eventually. The therapy group - why did it feel slightly fake? By the 50% mark Scarlet decides that she loved these people … but why? Apart from two conversations she had with the girls, why did she feel that way?
I’m not saying it was a bad book, but I expected it to be better. There were some great bits throughout, like them pretending to be Caroline and Ethan, so I know she’s capable of good storytelling.
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Blurb
Scarlett Green and Theo Winters are two writers with only one bestselling book to their the one they wrote together all those years ago. None of the books they've written separately have ever been quite as successful.
Now at risk of being dropped by their respective publishers, Theo and Scarlett's agent suggests it's time for them to work together again. She doesn't know why they fell out and frankly she doesn't care! This is the only way they can save their careers. And surely an exclusive writers' retreat in the French Riviera isn't the worst way to spend a summer...
That is until Scarlett and Theo arrive at their Cote D'Azur resort and find out they're all booked... for a couples retreat!
My Opinion
Firstly I would like to point out how cute this book cover is. Couples Retreat was a fun read and I thought that it was well-written. At first I did struggle to connect with the characters but they did grow on me. This was my first read by Lorraine Brown but I thought that it was quite enjoyable and I am sure that I will be back for more.
Scarlett Green has just found out that her books haven't been selling well and must work with Theo Winters to try and save her career. The pair had previously worked together but they had fallen out - so imagine their surprise when they find out that they have been booked on a couples retreat instead of a writers' retreat. This was a sweet, slow-burn romance.
I know writers who have to work together, even though they can't stand each other, has been a quite popular theme in rom coms of late, but Couples Retreat is actually the first one I've read, so I was excited to get stuck in.
Scarlett and Theo wrote a bestselling book six years ago and haven't recreated that success writing books by themselves. Now their agent suggests they work together again so their publishers don't drop them. The problem; they had a falling out years earlier and haven't spoken since. Their agent arranges for them to go on a writing retreat in the Riviera, but it turns out to be a couple's retreat. They're forced together to sort out their problems, but sparks start to fly between the pair.
Couples Retreat is a rivals to lovers, slow burn romance with flawed characters, set to the idyllic backdrop of the French Riviera.
Scarlett was a really well developed and flawed character. I really connected to her and her inability to ask for help or the way she saw showing her feelings as a weakness. I loved watching her journey throughout the story.
The miscommunication trope is one of the major themes of the novel which I'm not usually a big fan of, but I liked the way the author weaved into the story, which fit well with the characters and their flaws.
My only quibble would be I would have liked to have seen a few chapters from Theo's perspective and to see what was happening from his perspective too.
A great summer read and something I'd recommend if you love slow burn romance.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Stars
Scarlett Green and Theo Winters, both struggling writers, face the prospect of being dropped by their publishers. Their agent suggests they collaborate again, despite their falling out years ago, to save their careers. Reluctantly, they agree to attend a writers' retreat in the French Riviera. However, upon arrival, they discover it's actually a couples retreat. Forced to confront their past and work together, Scarlett and Theo navigate the challenges of the retreat while rediscovering their chemistry and potential for success.
In "Couples Retreat" by Lorraine Brown, readers are treated to a heartwarming romance filled with depth and character development. While the slow burn may not be for everyone, it allows for a nuanced exploration of the main characters' past traumas and personal growth. The 6-year miscommunication trope adds tension and complexity to the story. Also may not be for everyone.
Despite the lack of spice, the build-up between the characters is great, culminating in a satisfying conclusion where they prioritise their careers and, ultimately, each other.

Scarlett and Theo have one bestselling novel to their names: the psychological thriller they wrote together years ago. None of the books they've written separately have sold anywhere near as well...
Now at risk of being dropped by their respective publishers, their agent tells them that working together is the only way to save their careers and sends them off on a writers' retreat in the south of France.
It wouldn't be the worst way to spend a summer--except that they've accidentally been booked on a couples retreat instead, and spending so much time together stirs up some very inconvenient feelings!
With their careers on the line and a pressing deadline, romance is the last thing on their minds…
Second chance Enemies to Lovers Miscommunication trope Fade to black
This is a great summer slow read. Nothing intense happens where you need to fully concentrate on the book at all times. I quite enjoyed this book, it’s a bit more of a slow burn than I’m used to. Unfortunately there was nothing major in this book that hooked me and kept me wanting more, which is something I need in books. I’m not much of a fan of the miscommunication trope but I very much enjoyed the character development between these two. I feel the couples retreat definitely helped them progress.
I was kindly gifted this book in return for an honest review via Netgalley
Thank you to Orion publishing and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this title. 3.5/5 This book was so much fun. I loved the premise. Two former co- authors (and one night stand) are forced together in the hopes they can drum up the magic of their first book and create another best seller. Their agent has them going on an all- expense paid writers retreat, but when they arrive, they find they are actually signed up for a couples retreat. Bring on the couples yoga and loads of therapy.
The idea for their novel is brilliant and I would read the book! Theo and Scarlett had great chemistry and the push and pull of their mutual attraction paired with their need to keep things professional created the perfect amount of tension. This was very slow burn, but yet the ending somehow seemed rushed. The lead up didn't pay off. Everything was wrapped up into too perfect of a bow at the end.
Spice level: Zero spice with kissing as hot as you are going to get.
Overall, it was an enjoyable beach read but was missing a pivotal moment to bring it to another level.
Scarlett and Theo, bestselling co-authors facing career decline, are forced into a writers’ retreat in France. However, they end up on a couples’ retreat, sparking unexpected romance amidst the pressure to save their careers.
Get ready to be swept away on a literary journey through the lush landscapes of the French countryside in ‘Couples Retreat.’ Lorraine Brown crafts a mesmerizing tale of redemption, passion, and the power of collaboration. Scarlett and Theo’s electric chemistry leaps off the pages as they navigate the treacherous waters of creative collaboration and undeniable attraction. With each page turn, weaves a narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, wondering if these two literary geniuses will save their careers, or succumb to the irresistible pull of love. ‘Couples Retreat’ is a must-read for all romance readers who believes in the transcendent power of love and art.
I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, as part of a tour with Rachel's Random Resources.
This was a fun contemporary romance. On first impressions, I felt a much deeper connection with the protagonist, Scarlett, than I first expected. I expected a protagonist that I could relate to, and who would make me giggle, but I related to Scarlett on a deeper level, perhaps because she was a writer.
A writer's retreat seems like an opportunity to reflect, and I hoped that it would allow Scarlett to get to know herself better. I was excited to see what the experience would have in store for her. Reading this felt a little bit like going on a journey with her. I felt the tone of the writing was a pleasant balance of serious and lighthearted, and this was lovely to read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Rachel's Random Resources, and to the author and publisher, for the opportunity to read and review this.
Enjoyable story but didn’t like having to wait so long before the situation between the main characters was explained.
Plot summary: Scarlett and Theo are authors. They debuted as cowriters with a highly successful novel then something went awry between them and they went their separate ways. They each went on to publish individual stories over the next six years but things come to a head when their agent tells them that they’re on the verge of losing their publishing deal because sales aren’t great. The agent recommends that Scarlett and Theo team up again at a writers’ retreat. They both reluctantly agree. When they arrive at the retreat it’s actually a “couples retreat” with therapy included. They again, reluctantly, go with it because they can’t afford to pay anything themselves. Discoveries are made. Honesty happens. Emotions are dealt with. Happy ending.

I really struggled to get into Couples Retreat and connect with the characters, I don’t know why. I loved the plot of but wasn’t feeling the chemistry between the Scarlett and Theo, so this whole story felt a bit forced. I also am not the biggest fan of the miscommunication trope so didn’t enjoy seeing it here.
Having said that I enjoyed the fact this book has a slow burn as it allows us to really get to know the characters and see their personal growth.
Summary: Two writers, one deadline, and no time for romance—Scarlett and Theo must collaborate to save their careers, sparking inconvenient feelings at a couples retreat.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book, all thoughts are my own.
an easy read with an enemies to lovers vibe throughout, you just knew they were going to get together although granted, it didn't happen when I expected it to!
I liked the chemistry between the characters and the setting sounded dreamy! The side characters were interesting and I perhaps would have enjoyed a little more about them and their backgrounds.
At points I found Scarlett annoying with her lack of boundaries and doing things for everyone but equally could see how easily you could fall into that role as rhe oldest daughter (IYKYK, right?)
All in a super easy read, definitely one I'd probably have enjoyed more sat around a pool myself!
I enjoyed the South of France setting, and the fact that Scarlett and Theo who clearly have issues with each other have not only been forced to write a second book together, but been tricked into going on a couples retreat too.
This is forced proximity, that includes a variety of exercises designed for romantic couples like the others on the retreat and seeing Scarlett and Theo so uncomfortable at any sort of therapy was entertaining.
I loved seeing how their dynamics changed as the story developed.
This is the first book I've read from this author and it's one I truly enjoyed.
Thank you to Orion and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Okay, so this book sounded so good based on the blurb and I liked the slow burn between Scarlett & Theo. But the misunderstanding bit was really silly. I hate heroine's who just assume things instead of talking it out and in this case, Scarlett annoyed me. She also always wanted to be the goody two shoes but never was ready to accept that she had her own flaws and could make mistakes. The writing was good and the banter between Theo & Scarlett was good but unfortunately, I think this book lacked depth. I liked the ending but I would've liked it even more if Scarlett had some character development tbh.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review
I enjoy reading romances set in the literary world, and I also like the enemies-to-lovers and forced proximity tropes, so I was looking forward to reading this. The characterisation is believable and relatable. Scarlett is a likeable character, but as a people pleaser, she often feels resentful, spoiling her outlook on life and making her frustrating to the reader. I like this story's humour and the couple's slow-burn attraction. The evocatively described setting gives this an escapist feel and makes it a good holiday read.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
I really enjoyed this story. It is quite frustrating to be wondering for so long what the hell has happened in the past for Theo and Scarlett, but it builds up a really good pace to the story. You have Scarlett slowly getting over their past and falling in love with Theo, whereas as a reader you still don’t know why they fell out all those years ago. The forced proximity setting is used well, with the couples retreat and the therapy sessions creating some really funny moments.
*I received an ARC of this book, this is my honest opinion*
I really really enjoyed this book and felt the sexual tension between the 2 was one of the best I have read. Only marked down because at times the writing of narrator's thinking felt a bit too knowing at times in terms of the psychological explanations of what was going on between two slightly traumatised individuals. However it was an excellent read and I would like to read more from this author.
