He definitely wasn't expecting to be dragged off to another world or raised as a skeleton infused with Death itself. Yet here he is, tossed down a Necromancer’s trash chute, and left to fend for himself against otherworldly monsters. Only as an abandoned minion, Sean no longer has a summoner paying the hourly mana costs he needs to sustain his new form. Which is bad since if he can’t pay those himself, he’s going to die… again.
Thankfully, his first and only friend in this new world can get Sean the mana he needs. Gel’s even eager to help! The only catch being that Gel is actually a carnivorous acid slime formed out of pure Chaos magic whose ‘help’ is to turn everything he eats into free, delicious mana. Once Sean can kill it for him, that is.
Our intrepid heroes are up against everything from oversized antlions, murderous undead, and some supremely terrifying badgers as they battle constantly against their own endless, gnawing hunger just to survive.
By fusing together into a symbiotic nightmare, wielding the twin powers of Death and Chaos, and unlocking the evolution possibilities of a slime and skeleton tandem, Sean and Gel will drive terror through the hearts of all who look upon them. But hey! You know what they
When a whole new world of magic, stats, and LitRPG-goodness is served up against you, you might as well eat it.

About the Rise of a Monster is a crunchy, weak-to-strong, monster evolution isekai LitRPG that combines off-the-wall humour with heart-pounding fight scenes and a plot that literally races against the clock. Join Sean and Gel as they slay, flambe, and consume their way across a dark fantasy world filled with wild monsters and wilder magic all while seeking revenge against the power-hungry necromancer who abandoned them… and is now desperate to reclaim and re-murder them.
This is a highly entertaining book, exceedingly well written, about two somewhat unsavory characters. Not in character, mind you, they're quite upstanding moral fellows despite Gel's predilection to eat everything he sees, but since Sean is an animated skeleton and Gel is a gel slime they're an acquired taste, especially for the squeamish.
Let's back up a bit. Sean, ex-military, is a chubby guy just letting life happen to him and hoping that tonight's date with Sarah is going to go well when Bancroft, an evil necromancer in another dimension, yanks him from Earth and into a dead body in his castle for experimentation. Just one of those days! Long story short--Sean doesn't work out and gets dumped into the basement where he regains consciousness albeit not life. This, by the way, is the best written description I've ever come across of someone normal becoming aware that they're undead and slowly adjusting to this. Kamitoan handles this with humor, nuance, and lots of icky detail and uses Gel the slime gel as an interlocular.
The situation pushing the plot is that Bancroft, washing his hands of Sean, forces a seriously underpowered Skeleton to generate enough mana to survive. First Sean and Gel have to escape the castle and then stay "alive" while wandering the world looking for a way to seek revenge on the evil Bancroft. It's a hell of a ride. The book is over 700 pages long but it flashes by due to Kamitoan's excellent sense of humor and Sean and Gel's epic friendship. You'll find yourself frequently forgetting the grisly nature of the main characters and cheering them on as they surmount the many obstacles in their way. BTW, it's amazing just how much that little slime gel can eat--and the recipes at the end of the book are to die for. Literally, they would kill you.
2.5 stars, honestly not my usual cup of tea. I generally don't go in for monsters, gore, horror, etc. but before I knew it I was invested and generally these types of books are quick reads for me so I can keep up with my reading challenge. It was not a quick read. And I found myself getting bored pretty quickly so I started skimming sections about halfway through the book. Gel was a interesting character. Sean was bland. I don't think I'll remember his name is a couple of days. the book honestly felt a bit long. still i got through it, and surprisingly didn't hate myself for it. So extra half a star. Recommended? eh buy/borrow? borrow
This was a pretty good read. The first few chapters were okay but once Sean met Gel things really kicked up a few notches. I really loved the humor between the two of them. Its what kept me reading along with the way that they leveled up, and it was good to see a main character that didn't level up quickly and that wasn't super over powered. Ill definitely see how the next book deal with the duo.
Could have been much better if it went full monster but it did not!! Just another LitRpg book with too much humour from the mc.. A monster should be a monster not a hero wannabe
Couldn’t put it down. I liked the unique class. The isekai elements are also pretty well done. I really hope we get more world building in book 2 however as it is fairly limited. On to book 2.
