I am having a hard time with this review because I have loved some of the author's other work and this book has a 4.5 rating at the moment, BUT this story was just ridiculous. The more I read the more implausible it became, bordering on just plain stupid.
I did enjoy the game of cat and mouse that Connie and Paul embarked on, some great who's fooling who moments, but it wasn't enough to up my enjoyment to three stars. The premise was a pretty good one and very unique; an older woman suffering from dementia gets help from a charity handyman who turns out to have some pretty shady ideas in his head. I just wish it were more realistic and didn't start getting so absurd, especially when the cousin gets involved. The contest of one-upmanship between Paul and Connie had me literally shaking my head.
I’m an outlier yet again, as this book is getting lots of five-star reviews from friends and strangers alike. It was an excellent premise, but the execution failed miserably. Man, maybe it's time for me to stop reading thrillers.

God these characters were AWFUL and you may have to suspend some disbelief 😅 BUT I couldn’t put this down. Short punchy chapters, bingeable and twisty.

Did you enjoy “The Good Samaritan” as much as I did?
Well, the latest offering from John Marrs gives off those same creepy vibes…
Gwen Wright lost her beloved husband 14 months ago, and now dementia has set in.
Fortunately, her daughter Connie was willing to relinquish her “wedding planning” career in Italy and she has moved close by to help care for her Mum. And, of course there are the charities which send people to help elderly widows like Gwen with the bigger tasks that need doing, like cutting shrubs, planting or painting.
Paul is one of the charity’s Volunteers, who shows up one day, and always seems to find one more task that he can help with…and he seems a bit too good to be true-a handsome “knight in shining armor”.
And, you know the saying: “If it seems to good to be true-it usually is”.
He begins to do “more and more” for Gwen without clearing things with Connie first, and soon enough he is CROSSING THE LINE ….and taking over Gwen’s care.
Occasional chapters told from the POV of various neighbors added to the fun!
John Marrs invoked the whole gamut of emotions in me as I read this one! In turn, I felt SHOCKED-OUTRAGED-HORRIFIED-SAD-NERVOUS and SURPRISED.
This UNIQUE story was compulsive reading , right up until the very LAST page, so I am going to round this one up to 5 stars!
DO read the author’s acknowledgement page! He wrote this book with the desire to shed light on the current U.K law which FAILS to protect its vulnerable ELDERLY.
I won’t publish the website he shares here because it could “SPOIL” some of the book, but it is a “MUST READ”!

Oh, how ridiculous this was. But still very entertaining, and there was a decent twist very early on. The second part dragged a bit though, and I couldn’t get past how the neighbors had no inkling at all that something fishy was going on. Come on, a young man marrying a woman with dementia? It would get people talking, that’s for sure.

What if someone was slowly, methodically working their way into the life of a loved one? What could you do to stop them?
Connie's life is on hold as she cares for her mother Gwen, who’s in the grasp of dementia.
Suddenly the handyman always seems to be ever-present around Gwen, and more than happy to help out...perhaps a bit too helpful.
Gwen loves all the new attention, but Connie thinks he’s surely up to something…she can just feel it!
John Marrs is at it again! Delivering a super twisty novel that had my anxiety ramping-up as the story unfolded! Don’t get too comfortable thinking you know where this is headed…because chances are you’ll be wrong!😂
In the beginning I had some difficulty reading about Gwen. If you know someone with dementia, or lost someone to the disease (as I have😢) it’s a bit triggering. But I simply couldn’t walk away from a John Marrs’ book. He handled the subject matter sensitively. Be sure to read the acknowledgment at the end of the book.

When first we practice to deceive.”
Wedding planner Connie leaves her job in Italy to come home and care for her mother Gwen, following a devastating diagnosis of vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s. Handyman Paul has been sent to Gwen’s house by a charity to help with jobs that have been neglected, such as the garden. However, Connie becomes increasingly concerned as Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell. The story is told primarily by Connie, interspersed with several other points of view. Who is the stranger in her house who seems to be taking over?
I read this book a few days ago, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since, if that’s not a sign of an outstanding read, then I don’t know what is.
Brace yourselves folks, this is John Marrs and you may just end up with whiplash with all the plot twists and turns. Although the plot is very well thought out, it’s a tough read if, like me, you have experience of relatives with dementia/Alzheimer’s. However, I totally admire the point that the author is making here, especially in terms of the UK law, it’s very thought-provoking and it shocks me. For future readers, see the after word.
Although Connie and Paul are about as far from likeable as it’s possible to get, the characterisation is excellent. One is beyond redemption, having cruel callous parasitic tendencies, but the other may just be redeemable as there are signs of disappearing leopard like spots. The tense Mexican stand-off situation is very well developed throughout, becoming an awful cat/mouse mouse game which plays out so unpredictably. This keeps you riveted and sharply inhaling breath at the sinister turn of events.
As the storyline develops, you realise this plot has way more depth than he said/she said scenario revealing multiple layers, which are horribly fascinating. The first part has some welcome good humour but this fades as things become more serious and there are good puzzles inserted into part one and two such as names that Gwen mentions. This becomes relevant as things spin out of control especially for one character. The “neighbourly inserts“ are very illuminating and the tone of these changes deeper into the storyline. It’s very dark and creepy at times, the hairs on the back of your neck stand out and a cold tingle goes up and down the spine as the levels of danger increases. The fear levels rise and rise and there is some violence. There’s such venom it’s scary, parts horrify at the exploitation and manipulation which shocks you to the core. There are multiple twists which keep on coming right to the end, the tension is as taut as piano wire and your eyes are rooted to the text with your jaw dropping at the awfulness. There are certainly dark horses here and that final twist is genius! Guess we know what’s coming next!!
This is a clever pertinent psychological thriller with characters you will love to hate.
A riveting page turner.

MY GOSH!!!!!! Talk about a one sit read
Mr Marrs has done it again and released another quick bingeable book! Be warned you have to suspend your disbelief slightly for this fun read!
The Stranger in Her House centre around a man named Paul who through a charity goes around helping vulnerable elders with household chores. Paul is doing his services at a woman named Gwen's home, but her daughter Connie, does not take a liking to him. She senses that something is sinister and wrong with Paul and she wants him away from her mother.
GUYSSSSSSSS! When I tell you the first 50% of this book had me screaming, hollering while uncontrollably throwing out expletives around my home you wouldn't believe it!
One thing John Marrs is going to do is create a character that you will loathe from the depths of your soul! In this instance it was a whole neighborhood of characters that had me absolutely livid with their utter blasé and stupidity!
Oh the main characters were definitely fleshed out and without saying too much, all I willsay express about them is 🖕🏾.
Having gotten used to John Marrs style of writing and his pesky red herrings I was able to guess a few of the twists and reveals but LISTEN I was still flipping those pages and having a jolly good olé time with these irritant individuals!
Around the 70% mark it did drag just a teeny weeny bit, but that ending was soooooo damn satisfying! HAHAHAAHAA!
If you enjoy a fun twisty cat and mouse plot with some downright awful characters then I HIGHLY suggest you add this one to your TBR!
Oh I will never tire of this authors work and I'm so excited that I wont have to wait too long for his next book as he is releasing another one later on this year! 🖤

These characters were both toxic and exhausting… in the best way! 🫠
In The Stranger in Her House, Connie’s world begins to shift when her mother, Gwen, welcomes a helpful stranger named Paul into their lives. In the beginning, his kindness feels like a blessing, but subtle changes in Gwen’s behavior make Connie question his motives.
I can’t go into too much detail about what I liked and disliked or I’ll give things away, but there’s something about John Marrs’ writing that always pulls me in. His mysteries are plotted so well that when you figure something out early, it feels satisfying because you’ve earned it rather than it just being predictable. 🕵️♂️
This book was no exception. I really enjoyed reading from Connie’s, her neighbors’, and other perspectives, piecing together the truth about everything that was going on.
The first half had me completely HOOKED. It’s unsettling and full of tension. The story loses some of that momentum in the middle and drags quite a bit toward the end, which is why my overall rating isn’t higher. Still, I think it’s worth picking up!

“I was prepared for the dementia to take away a little bit more of her every day. But I didn’t expect another person to rob me of her.”
Connie Wright, 43, has her hands full caring for her aging mother, Gwendoline, who suffers with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s. Connie is appreciative of Help For Homes sending Paul Michael to help with the handyman chores around the house as it means that she can return home for short spells to keep her wedding planning business operational. It seems that Paul gives ‘Gwenny’ purpose and Connie agrees that “there’s clearly something about him that’s rejuvenating brain cells yet to be decimated by her disease.”
However, six weeks into the arrangement, the Wright house is upended. Although at first, Connie appreciated the free help, she suddenly becomes aware that this isn’t the mutually beneficial relationship she had planned for her mother. She fears that Paul has a hidden agenda.
You’ll love this cat-and-mouse, high-stakes psychological thriller that will have you questioning just who is using who.
Although this thriller is centered around the issue of trust, Marrs also spotlights those brain-related illnesses, such as dementia, that are so cruel because they are gradual and drawn out. He draws our attention to victimless crimes and the ease and repetition of their occurrence. I was in awe of Marrs representation of predators and those people who, when we finally think we have them figured out, keep moving the goalposts. He also gave me food for thought when he examined the life of a care-aid and revealed that they often feel invisible. Most of all, I appreciated his warning about those people we let into our lives who, when given a chance, become a malignant presence and a cancerous tumour. If I discover such a relationship developing, I hope I have the courage and foresight to remove them before it becomes terminal.
The tension-filled read was peppered with moments of lightheartedness that allowed me to sigh and decompress. One such moment was the referral to “Hyacinth Bucket and her Royal Doulton with the hand-painted periwinkles.”
I’m glad I gave this author a second chance as this was a deliciously good, five-star read for me!

Anyone who knows me or follows my reviews knows that I have a strong love for John Marrs. Way before he joined our Psychological Thriller Readers group on Facebook. I was begging readers to read his novels. Posting reviews as soon as I would finish. Now, he has become quite the notorious author who constantly engages with his fans. People love him! I just read today that The Stranger in Her House has reached the highest sales in the US and Canada at its launch week. How cool is that! John Marrs, I wish you all the success and it seems you are doing just that!

Connie lives with and takes care of her elderly mother, Gwen. One day a man shows up saying he has been sent by a non profit organization that helps with yard maintenance and odd jobs for elderly people and their homes. Meet Paul. At first, Paul is so kind and quite charming to Gwen and Connie. Handsome too. Gwen is won over right away and enjoys his company.
Connie starts to notice that he is slowly pushing her out. Doing things for Gwen that only Connie does. Little by little, Connie is left with little to do. It’s as if he’s trying to get rid of Gwen’s daughter. Ugh, this was irritating the shit out of me! I wanted to strangle his neck!
There is something more sinister at play and Connie is going to find out just what that is. Who is this Paul character and what does he really want?
I couldn’t put this down! Another page turning psychological thriller that is a must read. Fans of John Marrs will surely love this wicked tale! However, my favorites will always be The Good Samaritan and The Passengers! I’m definitely looking forward to his release later this year, The Family Experiment!

Nothing will be as it seems by the time you close this book. Gwen has been diagnosed with dementia after losing her husband 14 months ago, so her daughter Connie has ditched her wedding planner job in Italy to move in with her. She is not the only one accompanying her....Paul, a handyman, sent from a legit company to volunteer and help the most vulnerable elderly women. Before long it spirals out of control, with revenge and manipulation as Connie sees through his facade. There are so many blindsides and twists that I was geared to the finish line.
Connie appears the most helpful and likable as she tries to deescalate Paul's bad agenda, but he is not the only one in the book with secrets. Don't let her kindness fool you. At every corner, they are out there just waiting to plunge into our lives and wreak havoc. Not all people are good for us...."Who is the Stranger in Her House?"

She does the cleaning, shopping and cooking and does her best for her mother’s well-being.

Connie has put her life and career in Italy on hold, moving to the quiet village of Avringstone, Buckinghamshire, to care for her mother, Gwen, who is battling both vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s.
It’s demanding, but Connie cherishes their bond – until Paul arrives.
Charming. Helpful. Too helpful.
What begins as simple kindness soon turns into control, as Paul inserts himself into Gwen’s life and decisions. And when Gwen starts pushing Connie away in favour of him, Connie realises she may be losing her mother – not to illness, but to something far more dangerous.
Wowee! John Marrs excels at creating some of the most warped and reprehensible characters in the history of psychological suspense. And nobody twists a story quite like this author. This novel was on the same disturbing level as The Good Samaritan, so if you’ve read that one be prepared. The cat-and-mouse game in The Stranger in Her House never let up. Such a fast-paced thrill-ride. I’d be letting out a horrified gasp one minute, anxiously perched on the edge of my seat the next, and clapping my hands with glee in the next instance because an evil character had been dealt their well-deserved just deserts. Parts of the plot involving vulnerable and defenceless elderly being taken advantage of were difficult and sad to read about, even in the context of a fictitious thriller book. Also, be sure to read John Marrs’ eye-opening acknowledgements after you finish.
Connie was the primary narrator, but the story also unfolded through the voices of neighbours and law and health professionals offering outside observations, opinions, and judgements. These chapters heightened the drama and intrigue, a couple even made me chuckle, and they provided a welcoming balance to the seriousness of the subject matter. Content wise, there were also a couple of scenes that were quite graphic with the gory details, not for the faint hearted.
I listened to some of the audiobook while performing the mundane task of chopping vegetables for the slow cooker, and Elizabeth Knoweldon, Soneela Nankani, and Steve West’s reading was the perfect and engaging distraction.
The Stranger in her House ticked all the boxes for me and was everything I look for in a thriller.

John Marrs is a busy man. He is constantly writing unique and innovative psychological thrillers and science fiction stories for readers; constantly pivoting to give all his fans a taste. I have been really excited to read his newest book, THE STRANGER IN THE HOUSE, since @reederthereader started raving about it. John Marrs is a staple in my TBR and I love both types of stories he gives readers.
THE STRANGER IN THE HOUSE is a story that you will not see coming. It's mainly centered around Connie and her journey taking care of her mother Gwen and her increasingly painful showing of Alzheimer's. Connie has given up romance and her career to care for her mother, but when she sees a new man doing jobs around the house, she begins to question why he's there. Paul is a handyman and has volunteered time to help Gwen, but his presence grows more and more intimate with Gwen. As Paul's visits increase more and more, Connie believes his motives aren't so selfless. Connie believes that Paul is trying to push Connie out of the way for his own benefit. As Connie investigates Paul, she realizes that this investigation could not only sever her relationship with her mother, but also start a war she wasn't prepared to tackle.
I was fully engrossed in this story! It's a bit slower for a domestic thriller for me, but I totally did not see the twists coming. John Marrs, you stumped me! This one really goes in directions that will make your jaw drop. If you liked old school Ruth Ware and Lisa Jewell, THE STRANGER IN HER HOUSE is the book for you. John Marrs continues to entertain and provide unique stories in an oversaturated genre. I can totally see this book play out on tv or film and I can't wait to see what readers think of the characters. The ending completely blew me away and further cemented me as a fan of this author's works.

What tangled webs we weave….well the characters in this book certainly do
This is a full on blindside twist of a book and we meet Paul, Gwen, Meredith and Connie, ah yes and not forgetting Tom….between them they embark ( some unwittingly ) into a dark tale of manipulation, revenge and fraud….by the end of it some of them are not even aware they are doing it but what they create is a monster of a story that really will have you open mouthed as the revelations start to happen they don’t give in it let you take a breath before the next one

The Stranger in Her House been on my TBR for months and I finally found time to read it. Marrs’ What Lies Between Us is one of my favorite all time psychological thrillers, so I couldn’t wait to dive into this one.
Connie has found it difficult to care for her mother Gwen, who was recently widowed and diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. Gwen has both good and bad days, but Connie doesn’t complain. After all, she gave up her career as a wedding planner in Italy to take care of her.
However, when local volunteer Paul Michael turns up unannounced, Connie is taken aback. He is overly attentive and protective of Gwen and appears to have ulterior motives. Who is Paul Michael and what does he want?
What a fun game of cat and mouse! In true John Marrs fashion, the creep factor is in full force and twists lurk around every corner. I did manage to guess a few, but Marrs still found ways to surprise me!
While I enjoyed this plot, I found a few issues with the writing. In the first half of the book, when chapters are written from perspectives other than Connie’s, they don’t succeed in furthering the plot and are very redundant. Also, I didn’t have a character to really root for, as there is something to dislike in all of them or they are killed off too quickly for me to form an opinion of them.
The Stranger in Her House is a decent psychological thriller, but not my favorite from this author.

John Marrs knows how to write a book you will think about for a while after finishing it. His talent is undeniable. I read all his books and he is one of my favorite authors.
But this book left me with a strong feeling that he hates old people with dementia. In the story, he has a few cases when old women with dementia are marrying Paul that is a handsome man half their age. And how can this happen in register offices in different towns? The people working there have to be careful about such a situation.
The book left me with a sour taste. Not only because all the old people in it are falling under Paul's spell and don't see the truth, but most of them have something bad in their past. The main character was not allowed to become a better person than she wished to be.
The 3 star rating of this book was the lowest one that I gave to John Marrs' book as far.

This is a book of three thirds.
The first third is so ludicrous that I nearly stopped reading. I mean just incredibly implausible and silly. I thought the whole book would be this story arc. Thankfully just as I was about to stop, a bombshell I didn’t see coming is dropped and the pace picks up and it turns into a game of cat and mouse.
The second third of this book is enjoyable enough(if you can put the beginning out of your mind somewhat). It’s fast paced with reveal after reveal and quite clever in parts. Certainly the strongest part of the book by a long way.
The final third….well. Just as you feel the book has reached its climax and conclusion, the author feels compelled to write more chapters to tie up some loose ends and throw in some more, by now ludicrous reveals. The book just didn’t seem to want to end.
From the blurb you can see it’s an interesting subject. Old woman with dementia accepts help around the house from a volunteer with ulterior motives. Handled sensitively it could have been really interesting but it’s handled like a bull in a china shop.
I’m an outlier here as this book is being well received but for me, overall it was a good idea shoddily and clumsily executed.

I don’t even know where to begin with this book!!!
There were so many times i nearly threw my kindle across the room but the cost of getting a new one kept me from doing so. I guess its great that a book can make you feel that way but so many things in this books are just so absurd that it ruined it for me. Decent storyline but the twist and turns are just ridiculous. I wish i can give it 2.5 ⭐️ but goodreads don’t allow 1/2⭐️ so it’s a 2⭐️ for me.

I've felt mixed of emotions while reading this. Just a heads up—the characters were awful people and they deserved every bad thing that happened to them. I am glad it ended the way it did.
Merciless and clever. The thought of being manipulated and lied to just because of age, being at the mercy of someone that could easily take your life and everything you've worked for. It's scary how some people could infiltrate your safe place only to take advantage of your weakness. Ugh, these people are evil.
Such a fun read. John Marrs is really a force to be reckon with. I just loved how he played with my emotions yet again setting the bar high for domestic thrillers like this.

Predators seeking to take advantage of people with dementia.
Exciting first half of book really captured my interest, really keeping me glued to find out what was going to happen next.
Second half of book fell flat. I’d lost interest and the story took a ridiculous turn.
This is my third John Marrs book and I LOVED What Lies Between Us and The Good Samaritan.
This book though, unfortunately, was a bummer.

The Stranger in Her House is John Marr’s latest twisted, twisty standalone psychological thriller and full disclosure, I read it before it was edited and sent to the publishers so my recollections are a bit sketchy (a bit like John’s books!).
I don’t need to rehash what the book is about because it’s all there in the description above, but I will tell you my personal thoughts on this story. John has done it AGAIN.. he’s created a gripping story with an original plot, fascinating characters, clever twists and shocking revelations.
This book affected me more on a personal note due to the subject matter of Dementia and Alzheimers, but John tackled this topic with compassion and sensitivity, and I was also delighted with my cameo appearance as the landlady of the Horse & Hatchett, however he did let me down by calling me a despot in the acknowledgements!
If you are looking for a book that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, keep you rooting for one character and then changing your mind throughout the story, believing one side and then realising you’ve been hoodwinked, then I would 100% recommend The Stranger in Her House.
I don’t need to rehash what the book is about because it’s all there in the description above, but I will tell you my personal thoughts on this story. John has done it AGAIN.. he’s created a gripping story with an original plot, fascinating characters, clever twists and shocking revelations.
This book affected me more on a personal note due to the subject matter of Dementia and Alzheimers, but John tackled this topic with compassion and sensitivity, and I was also delighted with my cameo appearance as the landlady of the Horse & Hatchett, however he did let me down by calling me a despot in the acknowledgements!

This was my 8th book by this author and I was very pleased with this one, mostly for the storytelling.
I was hooked from the beginning and I didn’t want to stop reading.
Although slow, with a farfetched storyline and unlikeable characters, I thought it was very entertaining. The development was quite smart.
The cat and mouse chasing was really interesting and one twist was surprising. I could not wait to see who would win the title as the best con artist.
I read the ebook while simultaneously listening to the audiobook.
I do recommend the audiobook.
