A troubled town A prehistoric past And the mother of all grudges
When Jess and Libby impulsively take a job in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, they have no idea what they’re in for.
It sounded simple enough. All they have to do is drive to the site of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, enjoy a stay in a historic inn, and find out who is kicking up a fuss at the Visitors Center and Museum. How hard can that be?
But as soon as the ladies get into town, things start going sideways. For one of the most haunted towns in the country, Gettysburg is oddly lacking in ghosts, and the ones they do find are like nothing they’ve ever experienced before. For the first time, communication is a problem. They’ve got either too much or none at all.
From there, it’s all downhill. Max and Henri cause the kind of problem that gets the attention of the local police. Mariah makes a disturbing discovery and reveals a talent she never needed before. Jess and Libby will learn more about revenge and sibling rivalry than they ever wanted to know while encountering an afterlife issue they didn’t know existed.
Can the friends heal old wounds and solve the mystery before spring break runs out?
Bullets Over Baltimore Street is the sixth book in the ongoing Afterlife Issues series, featuring ghosts, family, and friendship with plenty of laughs along the way.
USA Today bestselling author A.W. Hartoin grew up in rural Missouri, but her grandmother lived in the Central West End area of St. Louis. The CWE fascinated her with its enormous houses, every one unique. She was sure there was a story behind each ornate door. Going to Grandma’s house was a treat and an adventure. As the only grandchild around for many years, A.W. spent her visits exploring the many rooms with their many secrets. That’s how Mercy Watts and the fairies of Whipplethorn came to be. As an adult, A.W. Hartoin decided she needed a whole lot more life experience if she was going to write good characters so she joined the Air Force. It was the best education she could’ve hoped for. She met her husband and traveled the world, living in Alaska, Italy, and Germany before settling in Colorado for nearly eleven years. Now A.W. has returned to Germany and lives in picturesque Waldenbuch with her family and two spoiled cats, who absolutely believe they should be allowed to escape and roam the village freely.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but the plot moved at a snail’s pace in this latest installment, and the boys’ antics really got on my nerves. I still love the crew, but future installments need to be tightened up.
The concept for this series is so great and I really enjoyed the first few books, but this installment dragged for me. Topically a huge downer, too. I skimmed a lot of the last third and was happy when it was over.
Amazing author A. W. Hartoin has done it again. I don’t know how she juggles three very different series (with a little crossover here and there), keeps them all fascinating and fresh, and gives us another book just when we’re starting to go into withdrawal but I’m sure happy she does it. Bullets Over Baltimore Street is the latest in her wild and wildly funny Humorous Twisty Paranormal Ghost Mystery series (Afterlife Issues Book 6).
The adventures of Jess and Libby and their crew of Jess’ daughter Mariah and Libby’s twin sons Max and Henri, and a lot of additional drop-ins both living and not-living, are just a wild ride of ridiculousness that you can't put down. With danger and suspense and lots of clues and a mystery to solve thrown in to make things interesting. Interesting is putting it mildly. When Jess and Libby and their teenagers moved into the notoriously haunted house of St. Sebastian they discovered to their shock that “haunted” really meant haunted, that they could see ghosts, and that they were really good at solving old crimes and resolving issues for said ghosts. Life changed and things haven’t been the same since. They’ve adjusted, it’s a living, they are happy in St. Seb with good friends.
Bullets Over Baltimore Street finds them on a field trip. It’s spring break and they’ve gone to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to find out who is haunting the Visitors Center and Museum. Easy-peasy. After all the chaos and thrills and danger from their last case, they could use a slam-dunk. They plan to be done in three days. Famous last words. As always, trouble seems to find them. Before they even get to Gettysburg they encounter a cranky ghost who’s not getting the recognition and respect he thinks he deserves. The twins are their usual rambunctious, mischievous sunny-side-up-eggs, Mariah just wants some peace and quiet, Jess is still missing her deceased husband Hal, and Libby is, well, Libby is just exhausted. But they committed to the job, convinced themselves it would be like a little vacation, and here they are.
To start, Bullets Over Baltimore Street is full of facts and references and descriptions of Gettysburg, and who doesn’t love Gettysburg? Except that for the site of such a huge battle there are very few ghosts visible, and those that are visible seem to be subdued and trapped. Figuring out what’s causing all the havoc at the Visitor Center and Museum isn’t as easy as they expected – and are the boys really being chased by a dinosaur? Gettysburg had dinosaurs?? I don’t think so . . . .
This series is such a joy to read; each book is better than the last. Bullets Over Baltimore Street has the usual odd happenings like ghosts popping in and out, items mysteriously moving around, disgusting smells and pranks that sometimes seem a little too dangerous. But why are these ghosts so weird and why aren’t there more of them? There are a lot of odd characters, not just that dinosaur. And what’s up with that not-really-living-guy who seems to have a serious crush on Mariah – serious enough that he will “wait” for her.
Author Hartoin has written another winner, with a fast-moving, complex plot that makes perfect sense at the end but is a lot of fun and excitement getting there, clues and events that seem random but tie together perfectly, and maybe best of all, some more time with Leo, the handsome, deceased mortician who is their special protector, with talents extraordinary even for a ghost. He adds delightful dimension to each story in the series; if I had to meet a ghost I hope it would be Leo.
At the end of my reviews of Hartoin’s work I always feel like I’m doing an advertisement for her other series. But, actually, I guess I am. They are all so good I just don’t want anyone to miss out. While waiting for the next in one series you can catch up on another and just circle around. Perfect, right? Mercy Watts swings between hilarious and secretly dangerous, Stella Bled is suspenseful, bittersweet and complex, and this series featuring Jess & Libby is riveting, unbelievable but relatable at the same time and a great escape. I received an advance copy of Bullets Over Baltimore Street from the author as part of her review team. I loved it and recommend it without hesitation. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
Oh wow who knew ghosts could be so much fun or cause so much trouble? Whatever they are doing its certainly entertaining when this author is in charge. The story is undeniably different and I am pretty sure no other author has come up with a situation quite like it but some how the author makes it work and keeps you hooked until the very end. I love the characters from the family members to the new ghosts that they help along the way, they all keep the story (and the delightful series) fresh and captivating. Being a fan from England I don't know much about American history or the battles that took place, so I can't say what is fact or fiction, I just know the author obviously did a a lot of research which paints a very vivid picture of what transpired and made it entertaining when Libby and Jess's family try to help the ghosts trapped there and they got a few surprises along the way. With everything that transpired in this book, my review feels a little bit flat but it is really hard to explain without giving anything way, so I will just say it's worth a read and I can't wait for the next ghostly adventure.
Jess and Libby promise to do a favour for a friend who's cousin is having troubled that only they can help with. This means making a stop on there road trip to help a museum in Gettysburg, who is having problems with things that nobody else can see. Stopping at a place where a famous battle took place might not be the best idea when you can see ghosts but even Libby and Jess had no idea what they would be facing. Something is very wrong in Gettysburg. First the ghost seem frozen in there misery and the only ones not frozen are fighting all the time, then there is the dinosaur that insists on trying to eat the boys. What is going on? With just three days to figure it out Jess and Libby will need to do some fast talking and thinking in order to figure it out. I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Make plans to put everything aside as you follow Jess, Libby, their teens, and their ghost turkey to Gettysburg, where, if you know them, leads to a chaotic adventure. At times humorous, at others heartrending, Bullets Over Baltimore Street, is full of many more ghosts and more danger than they have faced before. I really enjoyed the different eras of history brought into this book, deftly woven into a tale that flows and melds. Using a young Confederate soldier and a Union lieutenant locked in battle for the last nearly 150 years as the fulcrum for the investigation was a brilliant move to skillfully and subtly link the other elements of the story as well as explore the historical elements. There is so much more to this book than your typical cozy, paranormal mystery. You will be satisfied on many levels.
Thank you to A.W. Hartoin for sharing an advance copy of the book with me; I have written this review at my own will and with my honest reflections.
Chaos and laughter at its best! Be prepared to read uninterrupted once you start Bullets Over Baltimore Street! Book 6 of this series does not disappoint as you follow Jess, Libby, Mariah, the Eggs, and a turkey companion to Gettysburg to once again settle down some disruptive ghosts and use their super sleuthing skills to solve some mysteries! I love the new characters introduced in this book and was happy to see Jess and Libby call on some characters from their past! This book is full of charming characters as well as some annoying ones and twists that will keep you hooked!
I usually love this series but this one really drug for me. There seemed to be a lot of repetitive conversations and actions. The constant singing and song discussions took away from the storyline and sometimes didn't even make sense. Maybe I'm behind in my modern song repertoire. The "Eggs" can be a lot on a good day - they maxed it more than once in this one. There also felt like a few things fell through the cracks and just weren't explained very well. The closure wasn't the best either. I'll still continue with the series but - for me - this one just wasn't a favorite.
Not only is this a humorous and entertaining story but paints a more complete picture of a brutal chapter of American history. I live 15 miles from Gettysburg over the Maryland line. I’ve found bullets and buttons in our yard from the march to Gettysburg. A lot of people hear about the battle itself but few know about the aftermath of the battle, the toll on civilians months later and that the battle is still very much alive there. Thank You! Great Read!!
I loved this series and gave the first five all five star ratings. Maybe because I read them one after the other I was burned out, but this one was hard to get through. I liked that they took a trip in the last one, but was ready for them to go home after and not on another trip and to read more about all the characters in St. Seb. This was to bogged down with history for me and I didn’t feel the dinosaurs fit. I am definitely looking forward to the next, in the series and to finding out about Gideon (book 3?). His story wasn’t told. I also hope that they can catch up on their sleep- they are always so tired!
I was so glad for the next book to come out. I’m so interesting to have it be about Gettysburg. There’s also a new perspective on seeing ghost a realization that they’re all there, but sometimes we don’t see them for whatever reason. There’s new friends that sounds like that is made and I really do enjoy this series. The boys crack me up. This book has dinosaurs, war, soldiers. Definitely a fun read.
Absolutely loved the first four books. Could still enjoy number 5, but here the heroes find themselves surrounded by Civil War ghosts and I almost noped out, because seriously? Stick to the cold cases and the small town stories instead of ‘heroes’ who are going to lay to rest the ghosts of the Civil war. Still, I carried on in hope that that wouldn’t be the case, but then the dinosaur happened, and sorry, but no. DNF 25%
Another great book. I enjoyed every single character. Each individual brought a great warmth to the story. As each page progressed I felt more and more connected to the characters. Between learning of their backgrounds and watching them grow, they really came to life.
This book had juuust the right amount of whimsy without being too over the top.
I love history, museums, dinosaurs, and of course, ghosts. So this book was an absolutely delight. A+

I absolutely LOVE this series! I was so enjoying this book, I couldn't and wouldn't put it down. I lost count on how many times I had to stop reading so I could wipe the tears from my eyes because I was laughing so hard.
I can't wait for their next adventure, hopefully it will be available SOON!!
Libby and Jess are called to rescue a Civil War era museum. They have to confront old prejudices and lies that have tricked the Civil war ghosts into replaying their epic battles on 3 days every year. This brings up so many questions whose answers are proving hard to answer. Exactly what is going on in Gettysburg?
Wow umm ancient ghosts. That would scare me let me just tell you, so I do not know how they dealt with it. This book was history in its finest. I don’t do history so this for me was intense and I could feel the emotions of war coming off the pages. I felt for them and hoped they would be free.
Brilliant. Loved it. A fun filled, ghost riddled romp with a lot of humour and a little pathos. A love this series and this the best one so far. The gang is in Gettysburg and encounter many ghosts who unusually will not speak to them. Great characters, wonderful story told with style and a great ending. Got to love those ghost dinosaurs. A real pleasure to read. Highly recommended
What if animals cpild become ghosts? Animals like Dinosaurs. How much havoc could ectoplasmic T-Rex cause if it could interact with the mortal world. When Jess and Libby take a ghost hunting job in Gettysburg they expect to find Civil War spirits. What they don't expect is a time warp letting the ghosts of the Jurassic into the modern world. Mildly scary, very funny, and a delight to read.
When you read this book, make sure you have the time to finish it, because I couldn't stop.
A paranormal story, an action adventure, a detective story all rolled into one. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. I hope the author continues the Afterlife series.
This story hit all the emotions. Libby, Jess, Mariah, Max, Henri, and Hambone going to Gettysburg. I loved the story and got attached to the ghosts. Totally worth it.
You never guess the ending. There is always multiple things going on but they are all tied together by the end. The characters are always interesting in her books.
Took a bit to get in to it. But loved all the antics the boys got into. Dinosaurs? What? Fun story with great information even if fiction, gets you wondering about the time period.
