A joy to read and a delightful antidote to bad days. Highly recommended! Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.
What a happy, uplifting book this is. I just don’t know how Caroline does it, but the warmth and delight she manages to convey in words, is something really special.
When Atticus Arnott discovers his long forgotten camper van, he decides it’s time for a change! Heading off for a Spanish adventure he leaves son Mungo running his farm and daughter Mary dealing with struggles of her own. Can they all find themselves a happy future and also come together as a happy family?
The characters are all so wonderful (with maybe the exception of one or two) and well developed, even grumpy Mungo will pull on your heart strings. The transformation in Atticus’s character is just wonderful and the people he meets along the way are fabulous. You will want to climb inside this book, inside the camper van and head off with Atticus!
The relationship between Atticus and his grandson is one to cherish, as is the one with best friend Arthur. I really liked how it not only followed Atticus’s story but also that of his son and daughter. The use of social media within the story was well written, older generations embracing it, but showing it isn’t without its problems.
I just really can’t put into words how wonderful this book is, you’ll laugh, you’ll smile, you may shed a few tears, happy and sad, but you’ll leave it feeling lifted, warm, included, happy. And wanting a holiday (or new life!) in Spain!
I'll share a full review later, but this book was everything I hoped it would be - and its author has never written better. Out on 9th September, and I'd urge you to add it to your reading list - and I thought it was quite wonderful...
This was a heartwarming story about life after loss and finding your own happiness. Atticus becomes a role model for others who are in the same situation and helps them to see that there is a great big world out there to see. I loved the people he met along the way and the life he created for himself. I also loved seeing his daughter, Mary, find a way to her own happiness after her struggles. Satisfying read but not any different from others along the same vein.
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.

This book is stunningly written with vivid, evocative and emotive descriptions and stunning surroundings I was absolutely captivated throughout. The cover and the synopsis work perfectly with the storyline.
I absolutely loved each and every other book that the incredible Caroline has written so when I seen this book was coming out and I seen that stunning cover with an adorable collie on the front well I just HAD to get a copy!!! After reading several amazing, beautiful and feel good books by Caroline I did wonder how on Earth she was going to make yet another unique, feel good page turner if I am honest with you. Well, of course she did!! I should never have doubted her for a moment. When you have a talent as incredible as Caroline's every book is guaranteed to be a beauty and I cannot wait to dive into more of her books. I would definitely LOVE to see more books based around 'Solma Vacaciones', hint, hint Caroline!! Books with Britta, Cheryl, Ruby and Erik as protagonists would be AMAZING!! No pressure, obviously ;) ! I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this absolutely fantastic and hilarious feel good book! Caroline's wonderful emotive and evocative writing skills and descriptions really do ensure the reader disappears into the storyline where she will transport you to Ireland with Mary and her family and then to Spain with Atticus and his friends where you can feel the sun on your face and the sand on your feet. The settings, drama and all come to life around you from the moment you open the book and continuing long after you finish it. She leaves you smelling the sea air, feeling the sun on your skin and leaves you with a smile on your face and feeling much lighter and happier than before you started. It is one of those books that are rammed with feel good moments, laughter fun, alcohol, heartbreak, community, drama, sun, sea, friendship and absolutely everything that you could ever want in an addictive must read! The storyline is realistic and down to earth and the setting is picturesque. I was absolutely sucked in from the first to the last page of this laugh out loud feel good page turner. On several occasions I had to remind myself I was actually in the house and not in Spain or Ireland myself as I was that lost in the storyline!! It is one of those books that I just could not put down and I ended up walking around with my book glued to my hands. Every time I thought I will just read one more chapter and then get on with some chores it ended in a way that there was no way I could leave it there so I had to read another and then the same happened until I very sadly came to the last page and its absolutely fantastic ending. I absolutely devoured this beauty in just one sitting of a few hours. I genuinely felt like I was on holidays and I was devastated when I came to the end and realised I'd have to pack my suitcase to leave the gorgeous camp site in Spain and Ireland and return to rainy Wales after a stunning getaway. Please keep the campsite and characters coming alive as I just cannot get enough of the ' Solma Vacaciones' and your amazing characters!! I really am hoping she is busy writing her next book and I'm looking forward to escaping into more of her past and future successes!!! Each and every one of the characters are strong and realistic and thanks to Caroline's evocative writing skills they all came to life, jumping of the pages and sucking me deep into their lives. Whether I loved them or hated them they all came together to make a perfect story. Thank you so much Caroline on writing another absolutely amazing feel good, laugh out loud page turner!!
Pack your bags, get comfortable, clear your schedules and get ready to go on a cruise of a lifetime with the amazing Caroline James!!
The characters are all realistic, a mix of strong personalities, memorable and larger than life. I absolutely loved meeting all these incredible characters. One of the things that I really enjoyed is the fact that they were all of the older generation and it was so fun seeing that you are only as young as you feel and while there is life you must live it!! I absolutely loved Atticus, who definitely has more followers than me as well as each of the other characters who were each a breathe of fresh air!! Every single one of the characters had their own unique personalities, flaws, weaknesses, quirks and strengths and I absolutely LOVED IT!! All of these characters and more make this an unforgettable, stunning book that will have you putting on your sun cream, grabbing yourself a cocktail and being whisked away on a gorgeous holiday!!! They all came to life before my eyes and I am really hoping we get to meet them all again!!!

The best Caroline James book yet! I fell in love with Atticus and was cheering him on throughout his adventures. But I was equally happy to leave him for a chapter and catch up with his daughter while she struggled with family life. The book had me laughing and also brought tears to my eyes. An absolute joy to read. You will love it.
Sweet suffering smartphones, this book had me cackling like a hen with Wi-Fi! Caroline James has served up a comedic masterpiece that proves retirement doesn't mean retreating—it means going full throttle with absolutely zero effs left to give.
Our hero Atticus Arnott is what happens when you cross a mischievous grandfather with the spirit of Indiana Jones and just a dash of technological befuddlement. The relationship between Atticus and his grandson is pure comedy gold—imagine your sweetest family moments, then add the chaos of a man who thinks "going viral" involves actual germs. Their bond had me alternately laughing and reaching for tissues (the emotional kind, not the "I'm dying of laughter" kind, though there was some of that too).
But wait, there's more! Best friend Arthur deserves his own spin-off series. These two old codgers together are like a pensioner's version of Laurel and Hardy, if Laurel and Hardy had smartphones they couldn't figure out and a complete disregard for social conventions. Their shenanigans had me wheezing harder than Atticus climbing a flight of stairs.
James brilliantly weaves together multiple storylines, following not just our delightfully dotty protagonist but also his son and daughter. It's like a family sitcom where everyone's having their own midlife crisis simultaneously—pure chaos in the best possible way. The multi-generational perspective adds layers of humor as we watch different ages collide with hilarious results.
The social media subplot is comedy genius! Watching older generations navigate the digital world is like watching penguins try to use chopsticks—adorable, frustrating, and absolutely hilarious. James nails the awkward beauty of grandparents discovering Facebook ("Why can I see what my neighbor had for breakfast?") while cleverly highlighting that even digital natives aren't immune to social media's pitfalls. It's a gentle reminder that we're all just humans poking at screens, hoping we don't accidentally post our grocery list as our relationship status.
This book is funnier than a cat video marathon and more heartwarming than your favorite comfort food. If you need a laugh (and let's face it, we all do), grab this book faster than Atticus grabbing the TV remote during the weather forecast. Five stars and a standing ovation from this reader who nearly choked on her coffee multiple times!
Warning: Do not read in public unless you're comfortable with strangers thinking you're having some sort of delightful breakdown.
Atticus Arnott is a seventy-year-old widower who’s been stuck in grief since losing his wife, Clara. Life on the farm has changed, and his son Mungo is running things in a way that doesn’t quite feel like home anymore. His daughter Mary is dealing with her own struggles, and Atticus feels like he’s just going through the motions. But everything shifts when he rediscovers his old camper van tucked away in the barn.
With help from his grandson Jake and his loyal dog, Atticus decides to take the trip to Spain he and Clara once dreamed of. What follows is a heartwarming journey filled with unexpected friendships, hilarious moments, and a whole lot of personal growth. I loved watching Atticus come back to life he’s funny, stubborn, and full of surprises.
The side characters were fantastic, especially his best friend. I love the way social media plays into the story, it was brilliant.
I also like how the book followed not just Atticus, but also his children.
This book is a beautiful reminder that adventure doesn’t have an age limit, and that healing can come in the most unexpected ways. I’m so glad I read it.
Where do I start with this book....? This was everything I never knew I needed! Honestly the most beautiful book, that is easily a 5 star read for me, and quite honestly my top read of this year. This book is full of the most heartfelt quotes and I love the deeper themes that run throughout even though the book still brings humour, connection and so much love.
Atticus is in his later years of life and stuck in a world of grief and loneliness after the death of his wife Clara. With a lot of support and encouragement from his grandson Jake, and best friend Arthur, and after the unexpected discovery of his much love VW campervan, Atticus sets off on a journey across Spain with his much loved dog and companion Ness. A journey that he and his wife had intended to do together. Throughout the journey Atticus finds a whole new lease of life and a whole community of lovely people. I really rooted for Atticus on his journey across Spain and I also reallt connected with him as a character. He reminded me so much of my own Grandad and that healed parts of me I didn't know needed healing.
I adored the characters in this story, all of them had their own baggage and quirks but they made for a beautiful little community.
Thank you to @lovebookstours and @carolinejamesauthor
I couldn't resist grabbing this book even just from the front cover image - this promised travels and I really hoped that the dog was going to be a big part of the story!
As you know, I don't read blurbs and head on in totally blind - but was hoping ......
In actual fact - this book was so much more than I'd been expecting.
We follow Atticus, who at 70, has decided it's time to leave his farm and head off on an adventure in his beloved campervan Winnie.
Now he heads off for sunnier climes in the Spanish sun - but if I'm honest, I'd have been more than happy heading up to his hometown in Cumbria!
It was great to see Atticus embracing life and making the most of his time - but I loved that we also see a little of the life he's left behind and get to see how the village responds to his escapade and also the effects it's had on his children too.
This was beautifully written with such an immersive writing style.
I was sucked into this right from the first few pages and had such a clear image in my head of all the events, scenes and landscapes.
The characters were wonderful. So down to earth and relatable - it was so easy to bring them into your heart and I don't think I stopped smiling for the whole read.
This is my first read by this author - but with a good backlist, I'm sure I'll be reading more very soon.
A nice easy read. I really enjoyed reading about Atticus and his friends and family. Atticus’s adventure in Spain sounded amazing. The temptation to get a camper van is unbelievable
What a fabulous, feel-good story this is! I absolutely loved it! I love Atticus. My heart went out to him at the start. He doesn’t find much joy in life since he lost the love of his life. His son has taken over his farm and turned it into a thriving business, but Arnott just isn’t interested in it much. He takes himself off for walks with his dog, Ness, and generally just tries to stay out of everyone’s way. So sad. One day though his grandson convinces him to renovate his old campervan, giving it a new lease of life. Atticus decides to bite the bullet and drive it to Spain. I’m not sure I’d be that brave at my age, let along 70. Little did he know just how much this was going to change the rest of his life. His daughter welcomes the change in him and supports his sense of adventure. His son, not so much. He’s not the most likable of characters although I can understand how some children, however old they are, find it difficult to accept a parent moving on after the death of the other. Brother and sister couldn’t be any different to each other. I loved joining Atticus on his travels, meeting his new friends, letting his hair down, and learning to embrace life again. I would absolutely follow his Instagram account! A beautifully written, heart-warming read which left me with a smile and happy tear.
** Many thanks to Caroline James for my gifted Kindle copy **
I really enjoyed this book! I loved all the quirky characters but Atticus was my favorite. Watching him come back to life as he traveled and met new people filled me with happy. I'm going to look and see what else she's written. Thank you NetGalley for allowing me an advance copy for my honest review

Atticus Arnott’s Great Adventure by Caroline James is a charming contemporary novel that I absolutely adored. This is a fun, light-hearted read showing that life is for living whatever your age. The lead character, Atticus Arnot, is seventy and is told “You’re never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” For five years, Atticus Arnott’s life has been on hold following the sudden death of his wife, Clara. An unexpected discovery of Winnie the VW camper van in his barn, awakens the adventurer in him. Encouraged and helped by his friend and his grandson, Atticus Arnott decides to live the dream he and his wife had, and he sets off for Spain with only his dog, Ness, for company, in Winnie the camper van. Along the way, he meets a variety of people, all of whom, welcome him with open arms. A closed life becomes a very open life. New to social media, Atticus Arnott believes he is posting his photos on Instagram and only his friend and grandson can see them. Unknown to him, #thetravellinggrandad soon has a huge following. “You’re showing the world that age isn’t important when it comes to following a dream.” Whilst we are still breathing, we need to grab life with both hands. In contrast to Atticus Arnott, his daughter is going through a rough period, with a crumbling marriage, due to a wandering husband. Mary shows herself to be a resilient character and an excellent mum to their four children. Mary supports her father’s dream, whereas her brother Mungo is against it. Mungo wants to limit his father. In contrast to Mary who wants to give her father wings to fly. There is the feeling of guilt from Atticus Arnott. “Guilty that I can feel happy again when Clara had her happiness cut short.” Clara always told him, “don’t let the old man in.” Atticus Arnott ‘hears’ the approval of his new life from Clara. Caroline James shows the reader the vibrancy of Spain – both the countryside, villages and the people. The whole novel is light and fun-filled, despite some serious themes. This is a novel that will leave you smiling, having entertained you from the start. I will leave you with a powerful quote: “True beauty didn’t lie in the perfection of youth but in the depth of character that came with age.” I received a free copy. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
A great read from a favourite author of mine Caroline James, this book is about Atticus and his life following the death of his wife Clara of a heart attack which had happened suddenly. Now he lives with his collie dog Ness who he enjoys taking on long walks around the farm. His son and his family now live there with him, his son has visions of a farm shop and cafe, plus maybe a caravan park and glamping site to bring in the money rather than the sheep that are there now. But all Atticus has now are memories, and when his old VW camper van is uncovered in the barn, he knows what he must do, and with the help of his grandson Jake, they restore the camper van and Atticus has lessons in using an i phone, sorting out a route to Spain and without telling the rest of the family he sets off with his dog Jess to have the adventure he always thought he would have with Clara, but now he would do it in her memory and scatter her ashes there too. When he arrives at the campsite he is unsure at first, not knowing what to expect, but he soon is drawn into the camaraderie between everyone who is staying there and they take him under their wings. Sorting him out with suitable clothing, taking him to local markets and shops and generally just making him feel better in himself. But when his family see his Instagram account they can't believe what they are seeing, some are happy for him and some are definitely not. But back in Ireland Atticus's daughter Mary has big marital problems that she is determined to sort out and provide a loving home for her children and this is something that Atticus knows nothing about. A story of families and relationships and this book really gives you a warm and fuzzy inside feeling as you read it, it's a truly lovely book. Well worthy of five stars 🌟.
What a glorious, heart warming, hug of a book this was. Atticus is 70 years old and five years on from the death of his beloved Wife, Clara, he’s still in mourning. The farming life that he loved has been taken over by his son, Mungo, who has changed it from a sheep farm to a farm shop and holiday village. Atticus is like a lost soul and doesn’t know what to do with his life. His only real companion is Ness the dog. That all changes when his daughter Mary visits from Ireland, they rediscover long forgotten Winnie the bright yellow camper van hidden away in a barn. With the help of his Grandson Jake, Atticus gets to work lovingly restoring her and planning a trip to Spain that takes him off on an adventure of a life time. I just loved the idea of Atticus and his dog Ness going off to sunny Spain in the camper van. Mary is fully supportive of her father’s plans but Mungo is furious. I loved the beautifully described settings in Cumbria on the farm, Ireland where Mary lives and the camping site in Spain where Atticus goes to visit. We meet many colourful characters throughout the book, particularly in Spain where Atticus meets some fabulous friends that bring joy, beauty and romance to his life. The characters are so well written, they really sing from the pages of the book. I really enjoyed getting to know everyone. The story telling is fabulous, some very funny moments and some that brought tears to my eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed being taken off to Spain. Amongst the mouth watering tapas, the delicious Sangria and the stunning scenery, Atticus really does have a wonderful adventure. And thanks to this book I am now singing Feliz Navidad, one of my favourite Christmas songs in September! I am not going to Spain any time soon but I feel like I need to go off for Tapas and Sangria to my favourite Spanish restaurant now.
Well this was a treat and a half and a book that felt just like a warm hug - Caroline James had my complete attention from the word go. There’s something quite refreshing about following a seventy-year-old man in his campervan, head off to Spain with his faithful collie, Ness. But it’s not just about travel or sunshine....no this book is so much more than that - it’s about courage, second chances and all the messy detours life throws at you along the way.
On the surface, this narrative sounds quite simple - but it’s packed full of twists, laughter and moments that make you think. The thing that really made the book for me was James's cast of characters. They’re such a mixed, eccentric bunch that you can’t help falling for all of them ...even Mungo, who I wasn’t sure I’d like at first. They all bring their own chaos and humour to the story and it makes the world James has built feel alive.
My absolute favourite thread was the Jake and Arthur comical moments with the gnomes...it was funny and a bit ridiculous. Every time they popped up, I found myself smiling at the sheer comic relief. What I loved most is how the book found a way to balance that feel-good holiday vibe with deeper reflections on family, love and starting over - no matter your age.
For me, this wasn’t a romcom or a travel story...it was a reminder that reinvention doesn’t just belong to the young and sometimes stepping into the unknown brings more joy than you thought possible. By the end, I felt like I’d been on the road trip with them, laughing, worrying and celebrating too.
I loved this book which is mainly focused on Atticus Arnott, a 70 year old, who had lost his wife, Clara five years ago and was still mourning her absence. His farm In Cumbria, which he loved, has been taken over by his son, Mungo and his family, who have turned it it into something that it was not, to be able to save the farm. His daughter Mary who lives In Ireland, who is going through problems of her own, takes here kids on a trip back home to see her family. Once there she see that her father is not doing well and attempts to get him out of his depression and to see him start to enjoy his life again. One day they go out to a barn where Atticus has stashed a lot of the things he wanted to keep, and they they rediscovered the long forgotten Westphalia VW camper van, Nellie, which they used to camp in when they were kids. Atticus and his wife had always wanted to drive it to the coast of Spain. So with a little encouragement from his grandson Jake who was a very good mechanic, they got the Van repaired. Jake helped him with all of the paper work for him and his dog Ness to go to Spain and fulfill that journey he and his wife wanted to take years ago. He also got his grandfather a cell phone and showed him how to put pictures on Instagram so that he could follow the journey. The next part of the story is a crazy one. The journey, the wonderful people he meets and and the way he transforms himself, He always remember the phrase “Don't let the old man in” Spain is the place where he finally learns to have fun. You have to see where this journey takes him. Such a great Story. I found out I have another of her books which I have not read yet, so I am really looking forward to reading that one as well. I would like to thank NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for a copy of this book.
Atticus is 70 years old and five years on from the death of his beloved Wife, Clara, he’s still in mourning. The farm he nurtured, knew and loved has been changed beyond recognition by his Son, Mungo who has created a successful farm shop and holiday village. It no longer feels like home to Atticus. Pondering what to do with his life, Atticus hears his Wife saying to him ‘Don’t let the old man in’.
When his daughter Mary visits from Ireland, they rediscover long forgotten Winnie the Westfalia VW camper van hidden away in a barn. With the help of his Grandson Jake, Atticus gets to work lovingly restoring her. Once Winnie is restored in all her glory, Jake helps Atticus plan a route to Spain. This is where he and Clara had intended to go together. Jake gets Atticus a phone and sets him up with an Instagram account to document his travels. Atticus leaves Cumbria behind and takes the Ferry to a camp site in Spain. Upon his arrival, he soon makes new friends and starts to rediscover the joy of life again.
This is such a heart warming, feel good story which makes the point well that you can never be too old to go on an adventure. It’s a book about family, friendship, and love. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would really recommend it for a nice easy, cosy and uplifting read.
Touches upon the following: 💜Family ❤️ Love 🧡Adultery 🩵Widowhood 🤍 Adventure 🧡 Friendship
How did Atticus Arnott and his dog Ness end up in southern Spain? A retired sheep farmer from the Lakeland Fells, heartbroken and withdrawn after the death of his wife, nothing can spark his interest. His son despairs but his daughter has an idea. That old VW campervan they used to holiday in. And sure enough, once they get it out of the barn, Atticus perks up. He decides to make the trip to Spain he had planned with his beloved wife. His grandson, a whizz with engines and techie stuff, helps him get the van in good order. He also sets Atticus up with Instagram, email and all information needed to get to the campsite south of Alicante. And once there, life is as vibrant as his new friend Cheryl’s lime green kaftan and orange hair. We flip between his home village in Cumbria to the rain-soaked greenery of the Irish coast near Cork and the hot golden beaches of southern Spain. Atticus discovers a whole new life and happiness. Meanwhile his daughter in Ireland goes through life-changing problems and his grandson in Cumbria provides useful backup. There is so much to enjoy as we travel between these settings and share in the pleasures and troubles along the way. This is a most enjoyable read, quite emotional in places and ending in a way that allows us to imagine the next stage in life for all the characters. I thoroughly recommend this story whether you read it with tea – as in Cumbria, - whisky as in Ireland or sangria by the Spanish sea.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story about septuagenarian Atticus, setting off a trip of a lifetime for him.
This is five years after losing his beloved wife Clara, and almost losing himself in the years that followed. Until he came across Winnie in one of his old barns, and his grandson Jake helps him resurrect her.
Winnie is a rather stunning campervan, and with her up and running Atticus with the help of best friend Arthur and Jake plan a trip to Spain.
Atticus had never been abroad before but had always hoped to take Clara to Spain, so is doing this in her honour.
He is even shown how to work a smartphone, the internet and Instagram, and thus on his travels accidentally becomes a bit of an icon for seniors travel.
Although daughter Mary seems to approve, his son Mungo is a big naysayers, and I really didn't take to him.
I also loved Atticus' dog Ness who accompanies him on the journey and all the new friends he meats at the campground he has booked. It sounded wonderful and he really does start to get a new lease of life.
There are some slightly more serious storylines involving some of the other characters, but ultimately this is a story of travel, of never being too old. and of adventure and trying new things.
Atticus is inspirational and i hope I still have my zest for travel when I get to be his age.
Thank you to Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I’ve come to the conclusion that I am probably quite antisocial. I’m not saying that if I found myself in Atticus’s situation I would turn into a lonely old grump, but the idea of living with a load of partying old pats in sunny Spain is probably my worst nightmare. When I retired in 2023, my husband and I decided to spend two months at a time in Gran Canaria but we settled for a quiet life – mostly. If I pop my clogs before him, he’d better not go back there with someone else. Unlike his late wife Clara approving of his new found ‘second chance’, I would be more like Lazar Wolf’s dead wife in Fiddler On The Roof and come back to haunt him.
That’s not to say that I didn’t love the book – I even stayed up till midnight (told you I wasn’t a party animal) to finish it. My favourite character though was definitely the daughter Mary. Even though I am Atticus’s age, I found her story the one I could most empathise with. She left her family in Cumbria to marry estate agent Conor and move to Ireland. They set up the business together, then had four children and what a right so-and-so he turned out to be. But never let it be said that Mary is a doormat. We shall have to wait and see.
Mungo is Mary’s twin and more of a grump than Atticus. He’s changed the ailing sheep farm into a trendy camp site with a shop and cafe, but Atticus is upset that he sold off the sheep that had been his father’s life. However, Mungo’s son Jake is going to help change all that. Jake is my second favourite character. At sixteen, he can turn his hand to anything and everything from online dating apps in Spain to doing up an old camper van. I need a Jake in my life. And a camper van.
Anyway, no more Gran Canaria – we have a dog now – just need a suitable mode of transport so we can all take that trip. We just need to find somewhere quiet and rehome the gnomes…
Many thanks to @lovebookstours for inviting me to be part of #AtticusArnott blog tour.
💛 Atticus Arnott’s Great Adventure by Caroline James ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (ARC Review)
If you enjoy: ✨ Romantic Comedy and Romance Fiction ✨ Reading about family, love, widowhood, friendship and adventure ✨ Books having a serious message behind the humour Then this one is definitely for you! 💕
Here I am again with another warm, sweet romcom! This was the first book I’ve read from this author, and I really LOVED it. What a happy, uplifting book this is! The writing is fluent, the style professional, and the storytelling fun. The cover and the title are so eye-catching that it’s almost impossible to resist picking it up.
While reading Atticus, you’ll often feel a sense of peace, but at the same time you’ll be swept into a deeply emotional story - one that makes you reflect on your own journey of self-discovery, touches your emotions, and shows you that life always offers new chances and paths.
I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it for an autumn read (hey, i love these cozy reads when its raining outside!!). It’s the kind of story you can enjoy in your free time just to make you smile. Give this warm, funny, and easy-to-read book a chance this Autumn. You won’t regret it.
This is an ARC review. I appreciate receiving this physical copy from publisher and the author in return for an honest review.
I've loved all of Caroline's books and this was no exception. Atticus came alive from the very first page. A widower who has lost not only his wife but has had to watch his life's work, his farm, being taken away from him by his son, who has turned it into a glamping site and farm shop. Atticus doesn't feel as though he has much to live for until he comes across an old camper van in one of the farm's outbuildings. With the support of his daughter Mary, and help from his grandson and best friend, Atticus gets the van ready for a journey of a life time, even if his son doesn't approve.
His daughter Mary has her own problems. A stay at home wife who feels like a drudge. Disrespected by her children and particularly her husband, who she suspects is having an affair, Mary knows that things need to change. Its Atticus' journey which inspires her to make the changes she needs to take control of her life.
Once, again Caroline proves that you don't have to accept life as it is, whatever your age. Life is what you make it and her characters definitely do that. With the exception of Atticus' son, I found the characters easy to love. The descriptions of the locations were beautiful and the story completely engaging.
This is an absolutely fabulous book... in fact, I read the majority of the book, from chapter 3 in 1 day, I couldn't put it down.
I've never read books by this author before, but I have added all her releases so far to my To Read list.
Atticus Arnott has lost his spark. After losing his wife, he let his son, Mungo, take over his sheep farm in Cumbria. When the farm changed to a camping site with a farm shop, Atticus lost his spark. He spent his days walking with his faithful friend Ness over the fells. 'Don't let the old man in' was his wife's favourite saying, but it was becoming harder for him not to.
Mary, his daughter, visited over the summer from Ireland, along with her 4 children. Her husband stayed at home, running his property business. Mary was determined to help her father, and when she found something from her childhood days, she knew she'd found the answer to getting her Dad back.
This book is funny, as well as having a serious message behind the humour. It's a one-off book, but if you like a good story with bits that will make you laugh, and some will make you cry, then this may be the book for you.
I will definitely be reading more books by this author.
Atticus Arnott's Great Adventure by Caroline James feels like a big warm hug - I smiled, I laughed and I even welled up a few times!
What begins as an exploration of the paralysing effects of loss and the fear of change unfolds into a beautiful story.
At seventy, Atticus is feeling lost following the death of his wife and the modernisation of his farm. So, he leaves his Cumbrian village for the coast of Spain in his vintage campervan with his loyal collie, Ness. What begins as a search for peace soon leads to unexpected adventures and new love. Meanwhile, his daughter Mary’s life is falling apart, forcing her to confront long-buried dreams.
As both father and daughter face fresh starts, they discover that moving forward means not escaping the past, but cherishing it all the while embracing the future.
I found the characters and relationships in this so rich. I loved Arthur, Mary, Cheryl and all of Atticus’s new found family. And the relationship between Atticus and Jake was my favourite.
This story is a wonderful reminder that there is life after grief, that love can be found at any age, and that there's always an adventure waiting.
Atticus Arnold takes us on a trip like no other. He’s been sidelined at home, and his precious flock of Herdwick Sheep has been sold; his farm is now a glamping business, so what is there to live for? Not much, if you ask Atticus. That is, until he uncovers the VW Camper Van that he bought when he was newly married. With the help of his grandson, he sets about returning the van to its former glory.
Although he’s a widower, Atticus has all but given up, finding joy in very little except where his family are concerned. His eldest grandson is in cahoots with his best friend, and they scheme to ensure that nothing could harm his plans for the van. Atticus is determined to go on an adventure with his faithful Collie, Ness. His eldest son is determined that Atticus cannot possibly make decisions for himself and needs to be watched carefully.
Meanwhile, Mary, Atticus’s daughter, is feeling like a spare part. She seems to provide only food and cleaning services at home, as well as serving as a glorified taxi driver. Her husband is inattentive and, quite frankly, a waste of her time. Convinced that he’s having an affair, she’s determined to start afresh and rescue what is left of her life from a future filled with drudgery.
I absolutely loved this book and the way it promotes that there can be life in the proverbial old dog. As Atticus and then Mary navigate the decisions they have made, a beautiful story emerges, filled with hope and love. Even though they are father and daughter, they both take a firm grip on their lives and push forward onto a newer level of hope and opportunity. I’m being very cautious about revealing any spoilers, but I can promise you plenty of laughs and a trip to envy from the key’s first turn of the engine.
There is a fabulous expat community that should capture your imagination, and a gorgeous Irishman to get your heart racing.
In case you can’t tell, I loved this book and would happily give it more stars, but 5 is the maximum. I can, however, add it to my books of the year.
What a beautiful story this is! It's a real feel good read and made me smile often while reading. I adored Atticus, I really felt for him when Clara passed and he felt his life come to a stop but finding Winnie was a god send! Rekindling his love for adventure, we are taken along the the ride and what a ride it turned out to be!
I love how friendly the people at the caravan site is, making friends seems easy and I love how Atticus uses social media to keep in touch with his family via pictures and reels, as taught how by his grandson. His use of hashtags opens up a whole new category of followers that he was unaware of! I can just imagine if I had to explain social media to my grandparents before they passed!
I like how we get to know about his son and daughter along the way, both adults with children but encounter their own issues along the way.
Enjoyable story, I also loved Britta and I'm so happy to have read about their adventure!
