KC writes mostly urban fantasy and paranormal romance novels. She is partial to angels and showing that even the heavenly can be exciting.

When she is not writing, KC is sitting in her car waiting for her daughter to finish swim practice or waiting in the stands for her daughter to swim. Occasionally, she makes it to her sons' wrestling meets too.

In her spare time…who are we kidding? She doesn’t have any of that.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Abby McBride has tried to hide her psychic abilities for years, but a neighborhood Halloween party turns her entire life inside out. The house at 125 Magnolia Lane has always given her the “willies”. The fact that her friends, Krissy and Cal, live there and host the annual event means the angels had better shore up her protective bubble. This year, the ghosts are not in the mood to play nice, no matter how reinforced the bubble is. Soon, Krissy and Abby are at the ghosts’ mercy, and she is forced to use her powers to save them both. But those ghosts aren’t going away. They have demands that must be met, and Abby may be the only one who can make that happen.

It doesn’t take long before Tri-State Investigations (ghost hunters) are on the scene, with Abby’s spirit guides standing by to help find the ghosts and move them along. But at what cost to Abby and her family? Her kids are being bullied and are kicked off their sports team, and her husband Tanner and Cal have been removed from the coaching staff. Her friends are turning on her, as is the community. What hurts the most is that Tanner feels betrayed that she kept the secret from him, too.

Abby knows her task is monumental; she hopes she survives so that she can rebuild trust with her family and friends and settle into her anything but normal life.

Abby MacBride is an interesting protagonist; she has tried to ignore the voices in her head and the ghosts that only she can see. She learned long ago her powers were not a good thing, and all she wanted was to be like everyone else and have a “normal life”. Well, the cat is out of the bag, and now she has to deal with it. Her husband Tanner is hurt, but wants to protect her. Her twin sons don’t really understand why their lives have been upended. Krissy and Cal are scared about what is happening in their house, and they are upset because their boys were cast out just like Abby’s. It is easy to care about these characters and get invested in their lives.

I have to say, a story like this could have turned dark very quickly, but the author laced the story with humor to keep it lighthearted. Abby’s inner dialogues and comments from other characters, living and dead, were quite amusing. Things did get serious when it was time to take on “the Others”. Everyone needed to work together. I was captivated by the other world the author created. The drama taking place was exciting, tense, and scary. Lives were truly on the line in usual and unusual ways.

Ms. Freeman allowed Abby to grow, and by the end, we saw how brave this woman is. The author captures the people of the tight-knit “perfect” neighborhood so well. I appreciated how Abby leaves their gossip and accusations behind to help, especially those who couldn’t help themselves. I enjoyed the themes of friendship, acceptance, and sacrifice, and the way the author layered them in the story. The book did fall out of the cozy realm for me, though, due to the explicit language. Abby does love those F-bombs.

In Psychic in Suburbia, readers are taken along on an adventurous journey with a middle-aged protagonist who pushes herself to do what is right. A lighthearted mystery with stunning moments of suspense made this book an entertaining and enjoyable read.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.

The choice of main character really stood out to me—rather than the usual young hero or quirky detective, the story follows a middle-aged stay-at-home mom who just happens to have psychic abilities she’s kept hidden from everyone in her life. It’s a clever premise, and one that adds both relatability and novelty.

The tone is consistently light and humorous, which makes the prose entertaining even when not much is happening. That said, I sometimes felt the author let the main character spend too long inside her own head. Pages would go by with her thoughts circling before the plot actually moved forward, and it bogged things down.

For me, the real story didn’t kick in until about two-thirds of the way through, when believable tension and conflict with meaningful stakes finally appeared. From that point on, I was hooked. The humor, while charming at first, also began to feel repetitive after a while, and trimming back some of the inner monologue and running jokes would have tightened the story considerably.

Overall, Psychic in Suburbia is a well-executed and fun read with a refreshingly different protagonist. I enjoyed it, but I think it could have been even stronger with a bit more streamlining and a quicker build to the main conflict.

Thank you BookSirens for the ARC.

What can possibly happen when spirits come "calling" you to hear their demands while trying to keep your psychic ability hidden at the same time.....this happens to Abby in Psychic in Suburbia. This story takes you on an adventure of sorts and it was quite enjoyable especially now with spooky season. Abby is trying to do the right thing and protect her family and friends while trying not to ignore the ghosts that she is fully aware of. With threats looming...Abby needs to dig deep to the demands of these ghosts and also be vulnerable to her friends and family what she is truly gifted in.....

This story was a fun and cozy paranormal mystery.......

Abby McBride is a middle-aged mom with psychic abilities that she has always tried to suppress. However, the ghosts are now demanding that she confront her gifts head-on. The question arises: will she become an outcast in her own neighbourhood?

Psychic in Suburbia is a refreshing tale that offers a fun read filled with heart, humour, wit, quirky characters, and friendships—plus, let's not forget the ghosts.

At times, I found myself getting frustrated with Abby’s inner dialogues and ramblings; while they were often amusing, there were moments when they felt repetitive. Sometimes, less is more. That said, I did enjoy the story, which was full of mayhem and chaos.

Overall, Psychic in Suburbia is a light-hearted paranormal cozy mystery.

Abby McBride has spent her life hiding the fact she can communicate with ghosts. She learned at a young age that it was better to keep that detail to herself which is why her husband has no idea. When they attend a Halloween party, it goes awry from the beginning and Abby finds herself in a precarious situation. The ghosts in the house have demanded Abby do what they want or cause those close to her harm. Now Abby has to embrace and expose who she is in order to navigate her way through the unpredictable predicament she finds herself in. Will she survive or make a bigger mess?

You had me after the first chapter. Hook, line, and sinker completely pulled me in. I enjoyed every moment of this one. Abby is a fascinating character and I liked the fact that the story pulls in her husband Tanner and how he adjusts to this side of Abby. Highly entertaining.

Wow I was completely surprised by this book! This is my first read by this author, I loved the title and blurb, I mean perimenopausal suburban mom that is a medium as well are coming up on spooky month - yes please!

This was like watching a scary movie with the lights on, it is scary, you feel like it is gonna get really dark but you know you are okay because well the lights are on! The writing was funny so it took the edge off of what could have turned almost horror.

The description of the neighborhood is so spot on the suburban hierarchy of the drop off moms, the clicks, the best best friend, big parties!

Fun read! Great for spooky season! And it does make me want to go through my crystals and make sure I am covered!

Psychic in Suburbia.

Well! This wasn’t quite what I was expecting! It was darker, creepier, spookier and grittier than I was expecting. Did I enjoy it? Yes! In many respects this was a battle between good and evil or between darkness and light. Additionally it was a journey of self acceptance and growth. The descriptive writing sparks your imagination as you visualize the scenarios the author has created.

Okay, I loved this one. Psychic in Suburbia was such a fun mix of humor, heart, and a touch of spooky that hit exactly what I was in the mood for.

The story follows Abby McBride, a suburban mom who’s dealing with all the midlife chaos — marriage, menopause, and keeping up appearances — when her long-suppressed psychic abilities decide to make a comeback at the worst possible time. Suddenly, her picture-perfect neighborhood is full of ghosts, secrets, and more drama than a PTA meeting on wine night.

What really pulled me in was Abby herself. She’s so real — funny, messy, insecure, but also strong in a way she doesn’t give herself credit for. Her sarcastic inner thoughts had me laughing out loud, but there were also these surprisingly touching moments about identity, aging, and learning to embrace the parts of yourself you’ve tried to hide.

The paranormal side was more cozy-mystery than horror, which I actually liked. The ghosts had depth and emotion, and the spooky stuff never overpowered the story. It was more about why they were there than just being scary.

A few side characters felt a little stereotypical (we all know that one perfect neighbor who’s too much), and the pacing slowed down in the middle, but once things picked up again, I couldn’t put it down.

Overall, Psychic in Suburbia felt like Desperate Housewives meets Ghost Whisperer — snarky, heartfelt, and a little supernatural. I closed the book smiling and definitely hoping there’s a sequel.

Abby McBride tries her best to ignore and keep secret the fact that she can see ghosts. Growing up with threats that her mother was going to put her in an institution when she was growing up, she now has a deep seeded fear of anyone finding out. There is a Halloween Bash at a house she really does not want to go to. Her friends make sure she goes, but only she knows that this house has many spirits in it. The spirits make it known they are there and everything goes topsy turvy for Abby. This was a refreshingly funny book. Totally enjoyable and many laugh out loud spots

This was such an interesting concept for a story! I do love the way that Abby was portrayed as a little bumbling, but for the most part, very relatable. Middle-aged, which doesn't happen a lot; normally the MFCs are in their early to mid-twenties; and she had a lot of life experience even though most of her life was spent trying to avoid her gifts and who she was meant to be. She made mistakes and she was called out on those mistakes, but ultimately, the character development grew and she learned from it despite trying to hide and run away from the responsibilities that she was finding herself in the middle of.
I also enjoyed the way that the author had the book seemingly wrapped up at about the sixty percent mark, and then the twist happened and everything kind of got thrown back into the pot of "what's gonna happen next".
This was an enjoyable, easy read and I do highly recommend it.

Psychic in Suburbia is a fun mix of humor, heart, and suspense. Abby, a stay-at-home mom with psychic abilities, finds herself navigating suburban life while also working to save a neighborhood child from paranormal spirits. The story is lighthearted and funny, but with just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. A charming, entertaining read.

Okay so I devoured this book in less than 24 hours!!

Middle aged, suburban mom has been trying to suppress her psychic abilities until a Halloween disaster forces her to embrace her powers in order to save her friends and family.

For me it was definitely a beach read with simple, fast-paced writing style. I love the FMC. She’s witty, funny, sarcastic, protective and brave as hell! For me the FMC was relatable. She kind of reminds me of Stephanie Plum. Some scenes were scary as hell but I wouldn’t categorize it as a horror book. I’d say this book is a cozy paranormal mystery if anything. I love the humor thrown in throughout the book. It’s not heavy on the horror which is a plus for me. Overall the tone of the book was fun, cozy, and light.

Thanks to the publisher and author for the ARC!!

I was able to jump right into the story, which is something I love about starting a new book.

Abby is a reluctant psychic ever since her parents forced her to stop with her “imaginary friends “. When all heck breaks loose, Abby is forced to reveal her abilities. What follows is an intense fight between what is good against an evil that is straight from h e double hockey sticks, as Abby would say.

This would have made a great series, but it was all neatly concluded, so it wasn’t a necessity.

a reluctant Psychic comes to terms with her gifts with a gripping adventure along the way. Well written and entertaining. I found it hilarious that ghost buster movie references are in the story as well as a touch of Cooky song lyrics. This is a feel good tale to believe in yourself and your abilities and it will see you through some tough times. This book is twisty and spooky yet pulls the heartstrings. As I was reading this I thought am I reading a new genre - the cozy horror? So good, enjoy. Thank you for the opportunity to read this as an ARC and I hope future readers find it as entertaining as I did.

Note: I received advance review copy of Psychic in Suburbia

At first glance this is the most generic of generic books you would find on a bargain table somewhere, but if by chance you were lucky enough to pick up that copy of Psychic in Suburbia you would be very surprised.

Psychic in Suburbia was a thrilling adventure through the events of suburban baseball mom Abby, a woman with the ability to see and converse with ghosts and help them move on. When spirits reach out to her for help with malicious spirits at her friends house she gets outed to her skeptic husband and has to find her way through uncharted territory.

I was so happy with how this story was told. Very much told from a first person perspective, Abby is a tremendously fun narrator. Another thing that I quite liked was that when most stories like this would be wrapping up we get plunged into a whole new level in the story here that carries the book to a satisfying conclusion. The biggest hurdle in this book is getting through some of the tedium of "woo-woo" as the book even call it.

Overall I would recommend Psychic in Suburbia as a wonderful and quick paranormal adventure.

I wasn't sure how I would like this one, but it sounded so fun and perfect for this time of year. I'm glad I took a chance on it.

Psychic in Suburbia is witty, entertaining, and full of heart - not to mention spooky vibes for fall! It's a quick read and will make you smile. Lots of ghosts and demons, too, though - a great mix!

Psychic in Suburbia Psychic in Suburbia by K.C. Freeman

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Psychic in Suburbia is the first book of K.C. Freeman's that I have read. I really enjoyed the main character, Abby. She is quirky, and so are her ghost "friends". There are times when I wish I had the abilities that Abby has, even when they seem too overwhelming, she finds a way to figure it out. I also love that she isn't the typical character that appears in every book, but instead is a mid-thirties, stay-at-home mom. She is a very relatable character. I look forward to exploring more books written by K.C. Freeman in the future.

Abby had always had as her parents called them imaginary friends, and until her deceased aunt shows up things were somewhat fine for her. However as she got older she was able to hide her abilities away and in college she met her now husband Tanner. However now into her forties things have changed and the spirits are back with more force. Abby has her spirit guides from her child hood, the imaginary friends, who help guide her now, George in particular. She has been able to keep this a secret until the annual Halloween party that her friend, Kristy throws becomes more haunted than expected. Abby is trying her best to help but the ghosts have unfortunately attached to Krissy’s youngest son who is five. She will do everything in her power to help but she was hoping to never have to expose her secret because she feared being ridiculed and sent away for being an empath psychic.

I enjoyed this cozy paranormal mystery. It is a genre I haven't read for a while and Abby's story was an enjoyable step back into a genre I like. It's filled with plenty of fun characters, heartfelt moments and humour. In a nutshell, Abby is someone who has had psychic abilities a long time but always tried to hold them at bay, now though the ghosts are at her to use them! Read her light hearted and fun story now to see what happens

I love this book! Well written, plays like a movie. It's fun, sassy and scary. Abi has to learn how to accept, understand and use her 'power' instead of hiding from it. Trying to do all that on top of realizing that sharing these things with other people will only make it all harder, it is alot for her to go through. Abi is relatable, you sympathize and understand the struggle she has had with this gift and I can see myself doing many of the same things she did, keeping it quiet, etc. I recommend this book and hope to see more of Abi and more from this author, in the future.

Abby has the gift to see and speak with the dead but she has suppressed it for years. During the annual Halloweeen Bash things start to go awry when the spirits decide they need to ramp things up to be heard. How far are these beings willing to go to get their points across? And is Abby ready to let the neighborhood know exactly what she has been hiding? Will they think she is crazy or will they embrace her gift? I like myself a good paranormal read and this one hit the spot. It was a fun and quick read that will give you some laughs.

This is my first book by this author in which I enjoyed reading. I enjoyed how this author used details to pull me into the character’s world. This is a fun story to read about Abby and her spirited ghosts. Her world turns upside down at one Halloween party. Now everything is at stake. What will she do? I enjoyed the characters in this story. They made me laugh in parts and kept me engaging throughout. I enjoyed watching their growth as well as the plot which made this story easy to read. I found this an entertaining, fast paced story that was hard to put down. I look forward to seeing what is next for this author. I highly recommend this book.

This was a really fascinating paranormal novel about a pre-menopausal mum who has to out herself as a pyschic to help some friends who are out of their depth.

I loved the self deprecating humour of the protagonist Abby in whose voice the story is told.

It was a real page turner of a read. I look forward to reading some more books by the same author.

I really enjoyed this story. And I hope it is the first in a series??

Abby has been penalized and ostracized by her own family since she was young.

Her fear is so strong; even her husband does not know of her abilities. What happens when it comes out and everyone learns?

Overall this was a very fun and entertaining read. My emotions were all over the place but in the best way! With some of the situations mentioned in the book it was pretty easy to relate to some of the characters-especially with the fact of the main character being middle-aged. Great, plot and building up of characters. It was a little hard getting through the first part due to the main character over explaining herself or her thoughts but that did go away some by midway through the book. I don’t know if it was due to the building up to the good stuff but I did find myself saying come on with over explanations a couple of times. Reasoning of not 5 stars.

Over all, I truly enjoyed the story and was intrigued of learning more of a physic medium’s world. I would love to see where Abby’s story goes.

I received this as an Arc copy this is my honest review.

Overall I enjoyed this story. The reluctant heroine is one of my favorite tropes. The main Character is likeable and I love her inner monologue. Her struggles with her powers due to surprising them the majority of her life was a good way to move the plot along.

I think that the supporting characters could have been more developed. I also would have liked the history aspect of the haunting to be explored more..
