🤔 My Thoughts: This was another solid installment from Delaney. Verbena and Luke were insta-love soulmates, yet fear kept them apart. I liked the story within a story of Nessa and Daire even though their love ended in tragedy. I can't wait for Sage and Lavender's HEAs!

🙏🏾Thanks to NetGalley, City Owl Press, and Colleen Delaney for this ARC! I voluntarily give my honest review, and all opinions are my own.
Haunting and House Witchery by Colleen Delaney is the third book in her paranormal romance series, The Witches of Star Island. Following the romantic adventures of the Bay sisters. Five magical sisters, each with their own brand of magic and love story. And this time is Verbena’s turn. After meeting Luke, a young man looking for a fresh start after a dark past.
I will be honest, I didn’t know this was the third book in a series when I started reading. which it probably would have been helpful, as there are a few nods to the previous two instalments, I didn’t quite understand until I looked it up. Missed references and links aside, I don’t think it hindered my enjoyment of the book. Verbena and Luke's romance gets off to a record-scratching start when 22-year-old Luke finds out she is 17. Which brings me to my first point: I am not the biggest fan of soulmate stories, precisely because of scenarios like these. But I really appreciate the way Dealaney handled it. Both Luke and Verbena are horrified at the realization of their ages, Luke more so, as he isn’t even aware of their connection. Making Verbena’s difficult (and very questionable) choice to use a potion to dampen both of their feelings understandable and a good way for Delaney to create drama and tension. Without falling back on some more played-out tropes. And bonus, Luke doesn’t immediately forgive her, despite her good intentions Verbena did essentially drug him for years. His feelings are believable and very valid. It creates an interesting dynamic. I enjoyed reading their story. Both Luke and Verbena are very charming characters, and they made the story interesting. Even if some of the overarching darker part of the story was somewhat lost on me, as I think it links back to the first two books. (Or I could be terrible at picking up hints, also very likely to be fair.) It does make me want to read the rest of the series and come back to this one and see all the links I missed. But a personal highlight for me is the sisters. The Bay sisters are cheerful, loud, teasing, and loving, and very accurate in how sibling relationships work. They will burn the world for each other, but are not above teasing and mocking each other or reading each other the riot act (which Verbena definitely needed). And I really enjoy the little touch of all of their names being plants. (I even included a photo of a Verbena plant as I had no idea what that was.) Overall, this book was a lot of fun to read, and I can’t wait to see what I missed.

The third book of The Witches of Star Island series is Verbena and Luke’s story which I had really been looking forward to after getting glimpses of the two in book 2 which was Rosemary and Asher’s story.
We learn of FMC Verbena and MMC Luke’s years-long connection and the circumstances that have kept them apart for those nine years. Confident and friendly Verbena is the face of Star Island in her role as the main realtor for the island. Luke is charming and went from a stranger to the island years before, which was when the two first met, to the well liked owner of the town’s most popular bar.
Luke is also the Bay witches’ neighbor, which is just one of the reasons that Verbena eventually moved out of her family cottage and into her own apartment in town. She has a few secrets and does her best to avoid Luke. With the impending curse that she and her sisters have been dealing with, the time of avoidance has come to an end and she must deal with their past as well as her current feelings for Luke. And Luke is about to get a few surprises when it comes to both Verbena and dealing with his own past.
I was really excited to read this one but it ended up falling flat for me. They mostly seemed angry at one another and I think the longing that should have been there was missing. Part of that was because of one of Verbena’s secrets but I feel like it still should have been there. There was also a bit of unnecessary drama.
This series is such an interesting premise and I truly love the setting and background of Star Island, that I will most likely continue that series with the next book despite feeling like this one moved too fast and fell flat passion and longing wise.
Hauntings and House Witchery is a beautifully written, approachable book that blends the eerie charm of ghost stories with the comforting rituals of domestic witchcraft. Colleen Delaney offers a unique perspective on how our homes can hold spiritual energy—and how we can work with that energy in meaningful, protective, and healing ways.
What I loved most about this book was its balance. It doesn’t lean too far into the spooky or the overly practical—instead, it walks a gentle line between folklore, personal experience, and magical guidance. Delaney writes in a way that feels like chatting with a wise friend who’s inviting you into her kitchen to talk about spirit encounters over a steaming mug of tea.
The chapters on ancestral spirits and haunted spaces were especially interesting, and I appreciated the respectful, non-fear-based approach. There’s a real sense of empowerment throughout—reminding readers that we’re not helpless in the face of spiritual activity, and that our homes can be sacred spaces filled with intention.
While I would have loved even more real-life examples or expanded techniques, the book is a wonderful entry point for those looking to bring more awareness and magic into their home lives. It’s ideal for beginners or for seasoned readers wanting something heartwarming and reflective to curl up with.
In short: Cozy, wise, and just the right touch of spooky—Hauntings and House Witchery is a lovely read for anyone curious about blending home-based witchcraft with spirit work.
The 3rd book in the Witches of Star Island series finally features Verbena, who we’ve known since the first book already knows who her soulmate is, and Luke lives on the island – and next door to the Bay Cottage!! I was really excited to find out more about this dynamic, and how they were able to stay away from each other. Come to find out, she had met him when she was still underage and knew that they wouldn’t be able to stay away from each other, she started taking a potion to reduce the feeling of the bond. Except when she became of age, she didn’t stop taking it because he was with someone else then and she was bitter.
Now ten years later, it’s finally time for her to stop the potion and explain to him what she had done. Initially he is furious with her, but eventually the bond reawakens, and he is unable to stay away from her. Verbena knows that it’s her time to fight against the evil forces – especially since her magic allows her to see ghosts and now one ghost, in particular, isn’t following the rules. It’s doing whatever it can to take verbena down.
When verbena and Luke must relive their past lives, it didn’t pack nearly the same punch as the previous books did, but it was still great. And now they have to figure out how it connects with the curse surrounding the sisters.
I love, love, love this series, and I can’t wait to read the stories about the rest of the sisters… especially now that we discovered that Lavender may have already met her soulmate as well!
Your invitation to believe in the magic of love and fate Hauntings and House Witchery is an enchanting mix of magic and mystery that feels both warm and a little spooky. It’s the kind of book that makes you want to grab a cup of hot tea and maybe even try to ward some spirits away! This paranormal mystery paints a picture of a world where witchcraft isn’t just about spells and potions; it’s woven into the very heart of your home and hearth. The story beautifully balances the comforting rituals of house witchery with the eerie lingering presence of ghosts, creating a perfect blend of warmth and suspense. The atmosphere of this book is like stepping into a world bathed in candlelight and filled with herbs, but there’s also a subtle, unsettling tension that you can’t quite shake or put your finger on, keeping you turning pages late into the night. The characters are charming and easy to connect with. Verbena has always been determined to keep Luke at arm’s length, whether it was through distance or spells. But when her carefully planned control of life is suddenly thrown into disarray, she can’t escape the past. The slow-burning romance between Verbena and Luke is incredibly tense, especially when hidden secrets come to light. If you love magical vibes with a hint of haunted house mystery, this cozy book is just what you need. While this is book 3 of the series, I have yet to read the ones before this one, and I didn’t feel like I was missing much context. Perfect standalone read, but the other 2 books in the series are now on my TBR. #HauntingsandHouseWitchery
Verbena Bay is that house witch who’s got it all together—real estate success, potions on point, and enough spell work to keep her soulmate Luke at arm’s length for nearly a decade. (Morally questionable? Maybe. Entertaining? Absolutely.) But when ghosts start getting violent, rival witches come sniffing around, and her carefully controlled world crumbles, all bets are off. And Luke? Oh, he’s the kind of man who has “broody island sanctuary” written all over him. He wanted forever with Verbena, but learning she’s been magically dodging him all these years? Yeah, that’s a blow. Watching them navigate betrayal, forgiveness, and very inconvenient sparks in the middle of paranormal chaos was addictive in the best way. This book is messy, magical, and gloriously dramatic. Verbena and Luke are the definition of “soulmates who can’t stay away,” even when everything—ghosts, dark family secrets, and their own stubborn hearts—is working against them. I was hooked on the tension, the sass, and the high stakes from page one. If you like your paranormal romance with fiery banter, tangled emotions, and ghosts who refuse to mind their own business, this one is a must-read. ✨ Cozy mysteries are my comfort reads—give me a witty heroine, quirky sidekicks (bonus points for pets), and a twisty puzzle, and I’m all in. This series checks every box, and I can’t wait to see where the next adventure takes me. ✨.
Verbena's story this time. On the hunt for her soulmate who she finds in the form of Luke. Of course, she already knew he was her soulmate, but he was slower on the realisation. I love how each book is intertwined. They follow on, so it can not really be read out of order - so much happens it wouldn't make sense if coming into this as book one.
I cannot decide which witch I like more, as they have their own qualities and powers but together, they are something else. I liked Luke from the start, he's a likeable guy, a successful business man with a big heart. Obviously he makes his initial feelings known when Verbena confesses to what she'd done, but it all worked out, right?
I can't imagine what it's like to have four sisters that are close in age, but for the Bay sisters, I can tell you it's never without an adventure of some sort. I like how the initial group is expanding, three sisters finding their soulmates, but it's come with it's own issues along the way. I've liked learning a little about different entities, their form on the environment, whether phantom, ghoul or poltergeist depending how they've acted.
Going and reliving a past life in a dream like state wouldn't be for me, it's enlightening but, I imagine, also scary. Needs must I suppose!
Really looking forward to the next one, whose story is next? Lavender or Sage? Guess we'll find out soon!
This book is the third in a series but I didn’t find that challenging as I picked up what I needed to know throughout the novel.
The series follows a family of five witches, each practising a different type of witchcraft. This book follows Verbena and starts with a scene from ten years ago where she finds her soulmate, someone all witches just know. But Luke rejects her due to her age, despite his attraction to her.
Fast forward ten years and Verbena is convinced by her sister to remove a spell to keep her and Luke’s feelings at bay. Which, of course, creates all kinds of emotions and chemistry between them and Verbena comes clean to Luke about her witchcraft.
Luke’s crash course in understanding Verbena’s powers is ramped up by powerful supernatural entities, bent on destroying them and Luke’s foster brother.
I enjoyed the ghost elements since spooky season is my favourite time of year and the ways Verbena works her craft in interacting with them. There are some comical scenes between Verbena and her sisters, and in her inner monologue at times.
There is a back story of abuse in Luke and his brother’s lives, so just a little trigger warning for anyone who may unfortunately need it.
Perfect for romantasy or even romance lovers who don’t usually venture into fantasy.
***I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review
In book 3 of the Witches Of Star Island series, nine years have passed since Verbena Bay and Luke Karnes kissed. She was a minor then, and he swore it should never have happened. She knew something he didn't - he was her soulmate. Now she is a successful realtor, thanks to some help from some morally ambiguous spell work. She goes to Luke and confesses that not only is he her soulmate, but she had cast a spell to keep them apart for the past seven years. Now she has broken the spell, and wants him as badly as he wants her. Luke is rightfully ticked off at her for her deceit, and it isn't going to be easy to win him back. Then Luke’s foster brother arrives, and with him, the voice of their long-dead guardian, adding more problems to the mix. It is going to take the two of them working together to get through all of this unscathed. I really enjoy this series. Because these books do build on each other, I feel like they are best enjoyed if they are read in order. There was plenty of action, tense moments, and lots of spicy scenes. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.
Ohh I love a good witchy romance, and this series just elevates it more with its action packed plot as the sister battle against a curse while finding their soulmates. This could work as a standalone, but I truly think you would enjoy it more if you read it in order. You know, get the full background on the curse and not just a recap. These two characters were good together after they stopped fighting it. I can’t wait to see what comes next for this family!
Verbena met her soulmate when she was 17 and he was in his 20s. Not exactly legal for them to be together, so she suppressed their bond. And then got scared of his reaction and just.. kept suppressing it. But it’s past time for her to stop. She’s going to have to let it go, and beg his forgiveness when she admits everything. Because telling someone that she is a witch, they are soulmates, but she’s been suppressing their bond, and then tell him that they have a curse and people are coming to try to kill him? Yeah. Totally gonna go over well.
Thank you to Love Books Tours for the copy, all thoughts are my own.
I liked Verbena just fine, but she was always my least favorite Bay sister. However, I knew she would have an interesting story. I've been dying to know what happened between her and Luke since the first The Witches of Star Island book, and this book tells it all. Not only was that explained, but I also got answers about why Verbena moved out of the cottage her sisters share.
This book took me by surprise. The whole thing was a plot twist. The story was more Luke-focused. He was more of a loner than I expected, but after finding out about his past, I'm not really surprised. I like my witchy books filled with magic, and Colleen has brought it again. This story is filled with romance, danger, and past lives to contend with. I especially liked the house witch stuff. It was a first for me. Verbena is kind of a badass. She can deal with ghosts and the rest of the afterlife. Who knew?
Hauntings and House Witchery was another superb read from Colleen Delaney. Now that Verbena's mystery is solved, I can't wait to tackle Lavender's mystery, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing how Sage will handle her soulmate. There are only two Bay sisters left.
This is Book 3 of Colleen's The Witchea of Star Island Series and I was so darn excited to read about Verbena's story!
In the previous two books, I knew that something significant had happened to Verbena as compred to her sisters, she always came across a bit uptight and straightlaced...
I never once thought it would be soulmate related!
Verbena is an incredibly gifted house witch, just like their mum, and I absolutely adored learning more about Verbena and her past. I also loved seeing how she came out of her shell!
Luke is just brilliant and I could tell that their story was going to be a bumpy one and I suppose, rightly so, given how they met and the morally grey potion used...
In this story Verbena has to solve the mystery of a very violent and lout spirit that seems to be directly linked to Luke and his brother.
We have ghosts, we have magic, wehave life threatening moments, we have the love of 5 sisters and of course, we have our soulmates... combined, this book (and series!) is just the perfect mix for a paranomal romance.
Colleen you have done it again and I can't wait to get my hands on Book 4!
This is the third book in the Witches of Star Island series and, while I definitely enjoyed it, it didn’t quite hit the same high for me as the first two.
Verbena is, so far, my least favorite Bay sister. I respect her ambition and power as a house witch, but she leans a little too far into control for my taste. Secretly making Luke take a potion for NINE years? That’s… a lot. It made it harder for me to root for her.
That said, I really appreciated that Luke didn’t just forgive her immediately because they are soulmates. He had every right to be upset, and I loved that the story let him sit in that. His troubled backstory genuinely endeared me to him, and I found myself connecting to him more than anyone in this installment.
The darker elements worked well for me. The violent ghost, and the layered magical threats added real tension and stakes. It kept the story moving and balanced the emotional drama with some solid paranormal action.
Even though this wasn’t my favorite of the series, I’m still very invested in Star Island and can’t wait to continue. The world, the magic system, and the Bay sisters as a whole still have me hooked.
Colleen Delaney does it again with the third installment of the Witches of Star Island series. After two books of mild teasing, we finally get the long-anticipated story of Verbana and Luke!
Told in third person, we follow the second youngest of the Bay sisters as she finally allows herself to fall in love with the local bartender. Their journey is full of conflict, heartbreak, and plenty of mystery - making the moment they finally give in well worth the wait.
Delaney once again brings me to tears with her storytelling, this time in both settings (if you know, you know). This book also explores a new dynamic for the series, pairing two hotheads who can’t help but clash and showing how they discover they can’t live without each other.
I cannot recommend this series, or this book, enough. I also want to thank Delaney for mentioning our book club in the acknowledgements. It has been an honor to follow this series since its inception, and I cannot wait for book four!
It's been a little while, but I'm back with my review for book 3 in this brilliant witchy series - The Witches Of Star Island - and you may remember seeing my reviews for books 1&2 - The Hedge Witch and Bewitching Rosemary back in 2024?
I absolutely loved the first two books and I was really excited to see this new release heading our way soon.
It was absolutely wonderful being back on Star Island and back in the comfort of the Bay sisters.
This book follows Verbena and Luke. Having been keeping Luke away for almost a decade, the sisters find themselves in trouble and in need of Luke's help - but is he willing to forgive the secrets he discovers.
Now, I can't really say too much about this one, as I don't want to spoil the other books in any way if you haven't yet read them.
But, just a point to note - these books really must be read in order as a set as they do follow on from each other and this third book wouldn't really make sense without having that background, character and plot progressions from the previous two.
Having said that, this is an amazing series and well worth delving into all three books, you won't regret it!
The magic system is so well thought out and I love how each of the Bay sisters contrast and compliment each other.
Although each has their own different powers, they really do work well together and make a great team and their sisterly bond shines through too!
I actually really loved Luke. He was so relatable and down to earth. A great character to introduce into the mix. But I definitely had some doubts about how this might all play out in the end.
Once again, this was beautifully written and I loved every second!
I'm so, so excited to see whose book will be next and to meet their soulmate and continue my Star Island journey.
We are back in the world of the Bay witches with book 3 and Verbena's long-awaited story. We have been getting to know all the sisters over the previous two books, but Verbena always remained fairly aloof, living apart from her sisters for an unknown reason. Well all of that becomes clear, and quite heartbreakingly so, in this book. This story gave us some new types of foes to wonder about, with talk of Ghosts, ghouls, phantoms and more. Showing us that the tale of the Bay witch sisters still has plenty more twists left to come. I really enjoyed meeting Luke and his family and the new connections and puzzle pieces that this brought into the story. It was quite upsetting to hear of his childhood, and could be triggering to some readers. I could not put this book down, reading it in one sitting over the course of an afternoon. I cannot wait for book 4 and to see which witch is next to find their soulmate and what will happen next!
This book was really more of a cozy read. I enjoyed a lot of the story and the setting, however I wasn't too invested in the characters. It seemed at times that they really didn't have emotional responses that matched their stated feeling to me. Like Luke being mad at Verbena for keeping him in the dark for so long, but ultimately never seeming to react more than to say he was angry. The feelings seemed really shallow to me, and I think that was partly to do with how strong the soulmate bond was. I think that for me I would have liked to see more conflict over the situation, but both he and Verbena moved on really quick without dwelling too much on it. Not my cup of tea, but I know a lot of people find that kind of drama annoying in stories so not a huge deal. Other than that I think it's a decent quick cozy romance with some supernatural haunting. Not what I was looking for but I think people who are into romances should give it a try.
Hauntings and House Witchery is a cozy-but-dangerous paranormal romance that blends second chances, haunted houses, and emotionally messy magic in a way that really worked for me. Verbena’s morally questionable spellwork and fierce independence make her a compelling lead, while Luke’s hurt and hesitation add real weight to their reunion instead of smoothing it over too quickly. I loved the mix of domestic witchcraft, family secrets, and escalating supernatural threats, especially how the ghosts and magic mirror the characters’ unresolved guilt and longing. A few plot threads felt slightly crowded, but the emotional payoff, strong atmosphere, and soulmate tension kept me invested. This is a warm, witchy story with sharp edges, perfect for readers who like their romance haunted and their magic complicated.
Small town charm, meets magical mayhem and murder with a healthy dose of romance in Colleen Delaney’s third book in The Witches of Star Island series. Hauntings and House Witchery brings us Verbena’s story. We already had an inkling she was destined for Luke and now, we finally get their full backstory. It’s one of questionable choices and the consequences that result. As usual we’re introduced to more of the magical world and creatures, learning how they all intertwine, overall making for one interesting story. These books are always full of adventure when all the sisters are involved and it’s one of the reasons that makes these books special. I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to see whose story is next.
This is the third book in The Witches of Star Island series and I recommend to read them in order. This is about Verbena and Luke who first met when she was 17 and he was 22. She knew he was her soulmate but to protect him she kept him at a distance by putting a spell on him and reconnected again 9 years later by spell removal by her sister. In turn Verbena comes clean about her lineage to Luke. I find this had a different tone set then the first 2 in this series for me and finding at times the story dragged for me. I sure part of it was I didn't like the couple (and their connection) as much as the first 2 couples.
I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
😮💨 This was totally unexpected, but a fantastic surprise. This is book 3 in “The Witches of Star Island” it didn’t matter to me that I haven’t read the others, it was so easy to read and go along with it.This book was everything I wanted it to be, i absolutely love paranormal, magic etc. I loved all the characters, I wouldn’t be able to choose a favourite as they are all amazing in their own way. The back stories when it comes to Luke, Danny and Tyler is heartbreaking, and you can understand why they just get up and go.The relationships in this are spellbinding, I really devoured this and will be reading the series from the beginning.
I have been waiting impatiently for Hauntings and House Witchery to come out and it came out during the SPOOKY SEASON! It made my month! Verbena has always been secretive about what happened between her and her neighbor Luke, but their long looks and excellent tension have had me on the edge of my seat since the first book wanting their story. Colleen Delaney DELIVERED! No spoilers! But the reason they’re apart makes so much sense while also being heart wrenching. Discovering ghosts, fighting off their pasts and stepping into the future together is just a small part of this wonderfully witchy romance. I love this series!!
Hauntings and House Witchery is book 3 of the Witches of Star Island series. This instalment follows Verbena as she searches for her soulmate in the form of Luke. I was a bit confused by some of the events and characters as I hadn’t read the previous books. As the books follow on from each other. I did enjoy Verbena and Luke’s story as a battle the fear that kept them apart. I also thought they were great characters. The story was engaging, with well developed characters. I will definitely be going back to read the previous books in the series.
Hauntings and house witchery by Colleen Delaney. The witches of star island book 3. Oh my. I absolutely love this series. I love the sisters Verbena, Rosemary, Sage and Lavender. I loved the writing style and the story. I love anything to do with magic. This was a gripping read. I read this book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. I loved Verbena and Luke. I loved how everyone came together to help. Even Owen and Asher who is with Laurel and Rosemary. I do hope there is more to come. I definitely recommend this series. I would definitely start with book 1.
I received a free ARC of this book through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Hauntings and House Witchery is the third book in the Witches of Star Island series and it is just as wonderful as the first two. Bay sister, Verbena and her soul mate Luke come face to face with a nasty spirit and do their part to break the Bay curse all while falling in love. This book can be read as a standalone but you'll miss some of the magic. I'm very excited to read the next installment.
I absolutely loved this book perfect coming into the spooky season
It's got some good spice moments in this witchy romantasy the connection between the characters is electric and draws you in. Verbena became scared of the connection after feeling rejected. With flash backs to their past lives and drama from ghosts and phantoms Verbena wants to save Luke and his adoptive brother (cousin) and help them. The sisters must break their curse with the help of their sole mates or they could all die. Grab your coffee grab your blanket snuggle down and get stuck in.
Verbena Bay has built a successful life and has successfully managed to keep her soulmate at bay, that is until fate intervenes. When she confesses that she has tried to keep Luke away she feels that forgiveness may not be forthcoming.
This is the third book in the Bay sisters series. Each features one of the quirky sister witches and how as foretold they will meet their one true soulmate. As ever the story forms the perfect cozy fantasy. I continue to enjoy this series.
“Hauntings and House Witchery” was such a cozy blend of spooky + witchy. I loved the way the book mixes small rituals, home magic, folklore and paranormal history — it felt grounding, practical and also super fun to read. The writing is friendly and welcoming, and I found myself wanting to try a few of the ideas right away.
Some sections were a touch repetitive, but overall it was an enjoyable, comforting and magical little read.
