Inside the Maelstrom

Rate this book
When a dangerous driving charge gets me put in a fancy rehab for rich kids and socialites, I intended to do my time and then leave. I was going to leave behind the sports star who was addicted to uppers, the coke-head lawyers, and the space cadets. I was going to leave behind him.

Hendrick Kenley. Bored, listless, and filthy, dirty rich. If there was a waste of oxygen, it was him. My only goal was to avoid him and his beautifully cruel smirk until my time at the Wellness Center was over. I’d get lost in books and the view of the ocean, and then I’d go back to my life.

But Fate, that glorious b*tch, had other plans. Days before my release, I pick up a book. Jules Verne’s Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In the margins of that tatty paperback was my future, words in smeared ink that spoke to my soul, and I had to find their author. He'd left me clues, and I was going to track him down.

Problem was, unlike the rest of the people in the Center, I was poor. My parents had taken out a second mortgage so I could spend my ninety days here instead of in juvie. I had to make a deal with the Devil, and by the Devil I mean Hendrick Kenley and his cohort of disenchanted fools.

The Devil offered me a deal I couldn’t refuse; he’d pay for everything on the trip, traveling on a private planes and staying in fancy hotels, but I had to let him and his friends tag along.

There was a reason for the adage that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I’d learn the truth of that the hard way.

Inside The Maelstrom is a two part enemies to lovers, reverse harem romance. The protagonists are all in their twenties and this book contains M/M.

May contain possibly triggering themes, including those around mental health.

When I was nine, my grandmother and her friends used to read and swap Harlequin Mills and Boons novels. When I was busted reading one, they started sneaking me boxes full of strong heroines and rugged men. Thus started a long love affair with the romance genre.

Then I discovered urban fantasy, and fell in love with broody Alphas and sexy paranormals, and combining them together was a no brainer.

Then I discovered Reverse Harem.... Oh my. Why choose, am I right?

Blurb:

The serendipity of our FMC wanting to travel the world to find "Nemo" is nostalgic of the movie Elizabethtown. Bookstore to bookstore Avivia travels to find another clue of where Nemo could be, and as she goes from NYC to London to Paris to Mumbai (or was it Jakarta?) you fall for these characters. Grace McGinty unfolds each one of them with loving conversations, and a fever dream of sightseeing through the eyes of a very vivacious but anxiety driven young woman. She is fearless and falling for all three of them and I will need to listen a third time to decide who loved who more. It is a blissful awakening young love ; and finding you will do anything for those you love.
This is for those who love a why choose like the New Camelot series by Sierra Simone. It is spicy but so much more layered. An emotional roller coaster of a book that takes you apart and puts you back together with more love in your heart than you started with.

*Audiobook review

I can see why people would love this book, but I just wasn't vibing with it.

Aviva meets Hendrix in a rehab facility where they're both dealing with separate mental health issues and a note written among the pages of a Jules Verne book leads them and Hendrix's 2 friends on a trip around the world and ultimately turns a group of misfits into a family. I enjoyed seeing different countries through the eyes of the characters. I liked the way the book portrays mental illness in a way that is raw and realistic without seeming hopeless. There is an underlying plot that deals with Hendrix's politician father that was exciting and had a very satisfying ending.

I think what made this a 3 star read for me, was the way the polycule came together. This is an MMFMM. All the guys are with Aviva but only 2 of them are also with each other. This book was very 'lust-forward'. There was lots of sexual chemistry, but I didn't see the emotional until well into the second part of the books. Early in part 2, Aviva herself even admitted she didn't really know the guys. I also didn't like how cantered Aviva was in the group, to the detriment of everyone else. in the beginning, she basically just was sexual with which ever guy she wanted, and the others were supposed to just deal with it. It caused a lot of conflict between them in the beginning and several times they wondered if they were enough for her or whether she'd want to add someone else to the group. That basically tainted the rest of the story for me.

The narration was great though. Juno Cooper, Grayson Owens, and Christian Fox really brought the story to life, convincingly portraying the different personalities of the characters with their emotive performance. And Christian Fox (I think) put on a really good Australian accent for one of the side characters.

*I received an advance copy from the production company, PinUp Audio. These thoughts are entirely my own.

Aviva is sent to a mental facility after a court mandates it so, and while there she meets Hendrix, the cocky, confident sentor's son who walks around like he owns the place and pays his way into the laps of luxury while stuck in the same facility. Drix takes a liking to Aviva but she does not feel the same. Allowing him to drag her along if only for the chance of pace out of a rigid schedule, she learns of all his loopholes and meets the rest of his friends. When the both are about to be released, Aviva mentions that she has a dream of traveling the world, and with all the money he has at his disposal and his fascination with Aviva, Hendrix decides to make her dream come true.
As Aviva and Hendrix and joined by Ato, Sampson and Evan, they embark on a global scavenger hunt that she discovered and as they days go on, the more they all fall for each other and the good bad and ugly in each of them tests their relationships with one another. When their pasts come back and try to ruin them, they have a completely different fight on their hands, and from their travels to the courthouse, watching them choose their unit and each other repeatedly was beautiful to see.
This entire duet was a rollercoaster! Full of twists and turns I was not expecting and at times I lost track of the plot or where it was going, but once the catalyst of the story took off, I held on for the ride! There was good character development for everyone in the group and their care and commitment to each other allowed space enough for each of them to start to heal from their traumas and find peace and solace in their love.
The audio performances were done so well and although there were 5 main characters in this unit and only 3 narrators, their performances were done so well, it was easy to tell who was who, especially in dynamics like this. Juno, Christian and Grayson were all phenomenal and delivered beautiful performances for all their characters.

When Aviva finds herself in a fancy rehab facility after her intentional car collision with a magnolia tree. She is putting in her time and working through her depression. When she comes across a book in the library that has a note in it from a former patient of Sunny Outlook she is ready to go on a quest to find this mystery man. Unfortunately she doesn’t have the money to chase this guy around the world. Insert Hendrick Kenley, the cocky rich kid and least likely person Aviva ever imagined taking a trip to Europe with. When he offers to pay for her trip and go on this adventure with her as well as his two best friends, Ato and Samson and his bodyguard, Evan, this is an opportunity she can’t turn down. Let the rollercoaster ride begin!

I absolutely loved this book! The way the characters were able to help each other heal and overcome their struggles and emotional trauma was beautiful. I am a sucker for why choose with an MM element and I love age gap as well, which were both delivered in this story. The bond the characters shared was so special. I will say the spice was definitely hitting hard as well! So if you’re looking for an emotionally charged, why choose story, then I highly recommend Inside The Maelstrom, especially in audio!

Speaking of audio, it was incredible! Inside The Maelstrom is a duet multi-cast narrated audiobook. Narrated by Juno Cooper, Grayson Owens and Christian Fox. This was my first time listening to Juno and I am in awe of her talent. The way she voiced Aviva’s mental health struggles was powerful. She also captured the lighter side of Aviva as their adventure went on. Grayson is always a favorite of mine and his performance was excellent. I have only listened to Christian a handful of times and each time I enjoy his performance more and more. With there being 4 MMCs and only 2 male narrators, I give them major kudos for giving each character their own distinct voice that matched their personality perfectly.

Inside the Maelstrom is a complete duet series. Grace McGinty has become one of my favorite authors. This book may have Trigger Warnings for some. Several of the characters deal with moments of mental health. This book starts off a bit unconventional. Aviva is completing a 90 day sentence in rehab. While she is there she finds a book. Inside the book is handwritten messages. Aviva connects with the writer of these messages. She has named him “Nemo”. While she has been in rehab a semi-famous man has also been attending rehab as well. Hendrix is the senator’s son and is widely known as a man whore. Aviva is attracted to Hendrix but has just been staying clear on everyone. One night close to Aviva’s completion of rehab, Hendrix snatches Aviva from her bed. He brings her to hang out with his two friends. Ato and Sampson have been Hendrix’s best friends since childhood. They have hopped the fence to spend time with Hendrix at the rehab facility. Aviva tells they that she would love to travel the world in search of more clues from “Nemo” and to find herself. On the day of her release Hendrix offers her the trip and opportunity of a lifetime. She has three rules for them. They set off for the first clue. Due to Sampson’s traumatic past Evan, his personal bodyguard joins their journey. Along the way Aviva starts falling for all the men. They all help each other deal and manage their past traumas. They all balance each other out. Aviva and her men do finally learn how to love in such a unique relationship. I enjoyed this series so much. I loved seeing how much growth each of the characters endured and what they overcame together.

Juno Cooper, Grayson Owens, and Christian Fox did a phenomenal job narrating in duet style narration.

“Oh, Good Girl, you can’t fathom the bad things I want to do to you.”

Wow, I’m so deep in my feelings after finishing Inside the Maelstrom by Grace McGinty. This book has an eternal chokehold on my heart, and I have no interest in shaking it loose. A why choose, forced proximity, age gap adventure, with mental health rep, LGBTQ+ rep and allyship, Inside the Maelstrom is bursting with heart. Grace’s characters are complex, well-rounded, lovable and relatable. Their pain ripped my heart out, and Grace’s beautiful storytelling along with the passion of her characters stitched me back together bit by bit. I loved every moment of Aviva, Hendrick, Sampson, Otto, and Evan’s love story. Their deep connections, heartbreaking backstories, banter, and chemistry were fascinating. I loved the twists and turns of their Vernian quest. This is a must-listen for anyone who enjoys a great adventure in their spicy romance books.

Oh my word, this audiobook cast! Grayson Owens, Juno Cooper, and Christian Fox were phenomenal in this multicast duet narration. This story touched
me in a powerful, visceral, soul-changing way, and these three incredibly talented voice actors brought it to life flawlessly. Juno Cooper is a new-to-me narrator and now a one-click favorite. Her passion and cadence were captivating, and she brought Aviva’s character off the page perfectly. Grayson Owens and Christian Fox are longtime favorites, and they both blew me away with their performances in this audiobook. Their talents for distinct character voices and abilities to give each MMC’s personalities unique tone, energy, and passion are truly second-to-none. The clarity of character, especially when flipping between the MMCs in group chats and group activities 😏 was amazing. I loved this book from start to finish!

Thank you so much to the author & PinUp Audio for the ALC! This a MUST for lovers of duet multi-cast narration!

Grace McGinty serves a story full of suspense & intrigue with a why chose romance that is so, so satisfying!

A motley crew of young 20 somethings & their security detail, embark on a whirlwind journey around the world after chasing annotations left within the pages of Jules Verne novels. New & long-standing feelings of lust & love quickly take over the group but the internal battles with mental health threaten the unity of the group. An unexpected scandal soon erupts & the group must come together to battle an enemy that seeks to destroy the very heart of the group.

This book is for readers who enjoy:
🌊 Why Choose Romance
🩵 Enemies to Lovers
🌊 Age Gap
🩵 Angst and Spice
🌊 Found Family
🩵 Grief and Hurt
🌊 Mental Health Rep
🩵 Healing Romance
🌊 Political Scandal and Intrigue

Juno’s narration as Aviva was amazing! Her tone & infliction changes depending on the character she is connecting with at the moment, making it easy to believe that her individual feelings for all these men are real & sincere.

Christian Fox balances the vulnerability of Drix & the steadfastness of Evan, wonderfully! His performance was absolutely stellar and I look forward to listening to more of his narration.

The man that is Grayson Owens! The softer tone of his voice lends to the caring nature of Otto while his more gruff tone is perfect for the sasshole that is Sampson.

This is one of those stories that shows that blood isn’t always thicker than water and that sometimes, what appears messy & complicated is actually beautiful & simple!

Inside the Maelstrom by Grace McGinty

Narrated by: Grayson Owens, Juno Cooper, and Christian Fox

This book was an absolute ride. I loved every single moment of it, and the narration took the story from great to unforgettable.

The plot itself wasn’t predictable, and while there’s spice, it never overwhelms the heart of the story. Instead, you get a rich blend of romance, found family, adventure, mystery, and mental health representation that hit all the right notes for me.

The multi-cast narration was perfection:
✨ Juno Cooper embodied Aviva so well.
✨ Grayson Owens could make even a recipe sound like art. (Oto and Samson)
✨ Christian Fox—completely next-level performance. (Hendrick and Evan)

This is a story of "enemies" to lovers, treasure hunts across the globe (including Sicily and Stromboli—one of my favorite places!), and building unlikely bonds. The “why choose” dynamic worked beautifully, and I adored how the romance developed alongside the themes of growth, healing, and discovery.
If you love adventurous romances with multi-cast narration, mental health rep, and a “why choose” dynamic that really works, this is a must-listen.
One of my favorite listen this year—inside and out, it’s a gem.

I can't explain how much I loved this book. Although I sobbed through a couple of chapters, my heart was so full and happy when I finished.
I listened to the audiobook, and Grayson Owens, Juno Cooper and Christian Fox could not have been more perfect as narrators. The way they voiced every character, bringing all the emotions, the sadness, the laughs, the want.... it was a whole experience.
Aviva, Otto, Sampson, Hendrick and Evan go through a journey around the world... literally. These men would do anything for her. But they also go on a journey of slef discovery, acceptance, healing.
The relationships in this book are beautiful. Whether between lovers, or in the friendships that are built between all of them. They stand by each other through every single hardship they go through, and they go through SO MUCH.
This was filled with love, loyalty, and every emotion you can imagine.
The mental healt rep spoke to my soul. And when one of them starts to spiral, the way the others held him up and never left him alone had me in tears.
Hearing them in audiobook made it just that much better. I can't imagine a better cast to have voiced this book.
Inside the Maelstrom will remain in my heart for a long time.

Thanks to PinUp Audio and the author for this ALC - all opinions are my own

Aviva, Hendrick, Otto, Sampson, Evan

This is my second why-choose audio from this author and it’s the second one I’ve loved. She really writes great relationships. Not only do each of these characters have full backstories, the progression each goes through during the course of this story was very satisfying. The relationships were not easy but that lent so much to the emotional aspect. And the plot…such a great full-bodied storyline. Be sure you have a nice big glass of ice water to splash on your face after listening to some of these scenes!

The audio was phenomenal!! Each of these narrators owned their characters and really brought this story to life. Both male narrators had two MMCs and they did amazing with giving them unique voices and personalities. The female narrator’s voice was so beautiful I got lost in her performance. There was so much emotion and passion in this audio I was actually seeing these scenes play out like a movie!

✨ALC REVIEW✨

Narrated in multicast duet by Grayson Owens, Christian Fox, Juno Cooper.

This ALC/book combines the two parts of an enemies-to-lovers Polyamorous story.

This book focuses on mental health and the struggles that people who suffer can and do go through. The book touches on how important a real support system is!!! I love the way slow development of the relationships.

This book sucked me in immediately and I found myself thinking about it during times that I couldn’t be listening like at work. Wishing I could slip in an earbud and return to Hendrick, Samson, Otto, Evan, and Aviva because the world and story created don’t leave you even when you put the book down. I was so sad when I finished this book because I didn’t want it to be over.

This is my first book by Grace but it definitely won’t be my last!!

This was my first audio experience with Juno Cooper.

If you know me you know I love Christian Fox & Grayson Owens!! Great performances all around.

Audiobook Review

Mental Health affects us all in very different ways but it does not differentiate on how much money is there in people’s bank accounts. In this story, we have several accounts of how the character’s mental health is dealt with, managed or perceived. It’s neither perfect nor incorrect and therefore the representation is well done.
Loved all three narrators, Juno Cooper, Christian Fox and Grayson Owen voicing all 5 main characters.
In terms of the polyamorous relationship, I can see how Samson, Hendrick and Otto fit in with Aviva but Evan becomes a side piece, more of a father figure to the boys and a comfort for Aviva.
I would have also liked a better fight and ending to the saga with Hendrick’s father. It was a good subplot and added quite the drama to the story but in the end it was just underwhelming.
All in all, this audiobook is a great listen, full of travel mystery and unraveling characters.

Thank you pin up audio for the ALC. it was a long one and with shorter commutes it took a lot longer

I loved the character development for everyone in this book, how there was found friendship and love and also how they found themselves the most. Each character grew into a better person from being around Aviva

Two new to me narrators and I loved the full cast

I also love when the MMC swords cross in a why choose, and did they lol

I was going, is this book really about finding Nemo, but really Nemo was each of them finding themselves and falling for one another. Then Aviva inheriting all that fortune because she decided she wanted to go on an adventure, and met some guys who were just crazy enough and could fund it

I also loved how much it focused on mental health and having a good support system in place. No matter who you are or where you come from your world isn’t always perfect, but they found it in each other. I can’t wait to dive into more of this authors books

I just finished listening to "Inside the Maelstrom" by Grace McGinty and I loved it. The characters are so well-developed and the story is incredibly emotional, with a powerful focus on mental health that really resonated with me. Their adventure around the world was so interesting and added another layer to the already fantastic plot. The interactions between all of the characters were great, really showcasing their personalities. This one is spicy too! And let's talk about the narrators! Juno Cooper, Grayson Owens, and Christian Fox were absolutely amazing. The duet narration was exactly what this book needed. They brought so much life to the characters and the story. I definitely need more of them in my life. A must-listen for anyone who loves a deep, character-driven story and a steamy why choose.

This is my first experience reading or listening to a book by Grace McGinty, and it definitely won’t be my last. The story masterfully weaves together all your favorite tropes — from enemies-to-lovers and friends-to-lovers to reverse harem (mmfmm), age gap, found family, protector dynamics, and billionaire charm. The voice casting was impeccable, with Juno Cooper, Grayson Owens, and Christian Fox delivering stellar performances that truly brought the characters to life.

Spicy and rich with plot, the narrative hooked me from the very first paragraph. What stood out most was the thoughtful and authentic portrayal of mental illness, particularly bipolar disorder — a refreshing and rare depiction that resonated deeply with me as someone who lives with the condition.
Prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster, but trust me, it’s a journey well worth taking.

The complete Duet performed by Christian Fox, Grayson Owens and Juno Cooper

This book is one crazy ride!!!! The performance of the narrators was close to perfection. I really appreciate a duet narration especially when narrators adjust their voice for different characters. I was captivated from the very beginning.

I have never read/listen to a reverse harem book but I might be in it now. At least a Grace McGinty book…😏

The plot really kept my interest with traveling around the world to find more clues to finding a character.

It also had so many twists regarding Hendricks father.
I thought Grace did a great job writing about characters with mental illness as well.

Overall this was a really fun read and the audio was AMAZING!!!!

** Review based on audiobook **

This was my first book by this author and what a wild ride! An impulsive quest to find the person leaving cryptic notes in books around the world for a young woman and the men who’ve fallen for her, a marriage of convenience, courtroom drama, assassination attempts, high stakes and a shocking conclusion, this audio had me engrossed!

The narration by Juno Cooper, Grayson Owens, and Christian Fox was so good! Each had a host of main characters and side characters but had no trouble creating distinct voices for each. They also conveyed each one’s individual journey within the story. Excellent performances!

Okay, this was great. I will say, it took me a bit to get into it at first, and I'm not sure why. It could've been the choices Aviva was making, or honestly, idk, but I'm so glad I stuck it out.
There is so much emotion and trauma going on in this book, and I feel like the narrators all did such a phenomenal job in bringing that to life.
In the end, I ended up really liking this book.

I wanted to love this so bad, but I got halfway into the second part of the duet and I still felt no emotional connection between the characters. Felt like it was all just lust between them. I found it hard to follow the plot line because I was focusing too hard on trying to connect with the characters and trying to feel something about their relationships, so I lost a lot of the plot and couldn’t continue on. What I did love though, was the narrators. They were fantastic and they were the reason I carried on listening. But at a certain point, I had to dnf. 🥲

Another amazing book brought to life by the cast at Pin Up Audio!
Their voices… dare I say it… speak to me on a different level and just add the extra razzle to the story!

I loved the adventure we went on following Aviva and her men around the world chasing clues. The light shone on mental health was great (I do still worry about Aviva though). and these men are just top tear.

This duet gave me everything. From rehab halls to private planes and luxury hotels, Aviva’s journey with Hendrick, Otto, Sampson, and Evan was full of passion, heartbreak, and shocking turns.

Aviva just wanted to survive rehab and get back to her life. She never expected Hendrick Kenley—the rich, arrogant, beautifully cruel boy—to upend everything. A hidden message inside a battered copy of Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea pulls her into a mystery that changes the course of her future, binding her fate to Hendrick and his circle of friends.

The plot twists between these five characters had me gasping, clutching my headphones, and re-listening to scenes just to savor the tension. Grace McGinty knows how to weave dark romance with heart.

The narration by Juno Cooper, Christian Fox, and Grayson Owens elevated this story to perfection. The voices captured the angst, sensuality, and vulnerability of each character, making me feel every ounce of their turmoil.

Thank you to Grace McGinty and Gin Hannon of PinUp Audio for the ALC—this duet was unforgettable.

Wow, this sure was a wild ride! A lot of things happen to this group of mentally not the most stable people in a short time, sometimes to the point where I started wondering if we started to drift away from reality a bit, but in the end it didn't bother me too much. If I had to describe this book to other readers that are familiar in the why choose genre, I'd say it's a lovebaby between Unhinged by Steph Macca and Lilac by B.B. Reid. And in my opinion it's also much better than both the previously mentioned books.

I really liked the character growth and the way their relationship progressed. In the beginning I had a hard time following Aviva's choices sometimes, especially the big choice to go on this trip with the guys, but once the journey got going, I got really invested. I also really liked how there were multiple interesting side plots next to the romance, the mystery of chasing Nemo all around the world and the suspense of Hendrick's fight against his dad had me on the edge of my seat. For this many characterst to keep track of, I was glad for the multicast duet style narration. The narrators did an amazing job! The bomb drop at the end of the very last chapter though, with just 13 minutes of audibook left, was absolutely WILD. My jaw was quite literally on the floor.

Thank you Grace McGinty and PinUp Audio for the opportunity to listen to the ALC!
