This might feel sus, me giving APOLLO 5 stars when I wrote it ... but the 5 stars is really about my love of being back in the Nightshade world. This story was a little different for me and writing it ... because a lot of the story takes place in a palace and on safari. Oh, and did I mention ELEPHANTS? That alone deserves five stars, right? It has been so wonderful being immersed in this world again.
Reading the author’s note in the beginning of this book about the true story of the Vanishing Princesses of Saudi Arabia both broke my heart and cemented my desire to dive into this book.
This book was everything. It was more than I expected and completely amazing. The tension was high and the romance was sweet and protective, with plenty of banter thrown in. The suspense and danger were on point and I just couldn’t put this book down. The locale itself was also simply breathtaking. I adored this book and give it all the stars. I completely devoured it and from the beginning I sat and read it until the end. I didn’t want it to end and I have no regrets about losing sleep over it.
Apollo has felt like a failure in everything he does. Nouri has had to hide a secret her entire life. When she is captured, many months later Apollo is sent in to rescue her. But her fears and training to always protect her secret make her wary of trusting him. As they navigate dangers and threats from multiple angles, these two find love and safety, as well as plenty of danger, across the plains of Africa. Twists and turns had me gasping and my heart pounding. I cannot wait for the next book! The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 2.
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This was absolutely wonderful! Forced proximity at its finest. Add in the beautiful setting and backdrop, the page turning suspense, and a romance brewing in the background, and you have an amazing read! The story was so unique, it will be living rent free in my head for quite some time.
I think the setting, culture, the animals, and their parts in this story really made it stand out.
When Apollo and Leighton first meet, sparks fly, but the timing is all wrong. Now they have no choice but to revisit their feelings for each other as he is tasked with keeping her safe and extracting her from the hands of her captors. Some are pretending to have her best interests at heart, as they suspect she shares royal blood, but others clearly have another plan that is not meant for her good. Apollo (Owen) needs to step in and save her if only she will let him! The threat is real, the chemistry is real, and not knowing who is on their side or when things will go south makes this a very risky mission for all.
Apollo is quite the hero in this one, and the brief brush in with Dillion was perfect as we await his story next. Apollo and Leighton’s connection was instant. Even if they were in denial, I was loving the tension.
I gave this a 4.5 star rating, rounded to a 5 star read. It took a moment for the story to set up, and I really wanted more of a sneak peek into Owen and Leighton’s future in the end. But perhaps that will still come. I can't wait for Dillions story now!
I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
So so good! I loved this fast paced high suspense and action romantic adventure. We have a kidnapped princess and Owen Metcalfe, son of Canyon, one of the Discarded Heroes elite from Discarded Heroes. Side note here: The Metcalfes by Ronie Kendig is one of my favorite series by her for so many reasons. So you know Ronie Kendig is gonna keep on getting better and better with every single book she writes. One of my favorite authors whom I auto-buy. We have lots of danger and suspense. Owen is trying to prove to his father and himself that he is not a failure so he volunteers to go to get back the one girl he’s never forgotten. Nouri/Leighton Kingslake has been kidnapped by this crazy group in Saudi Arabia. Owen and his team go to get her out, so he comes up with the plan to get infiltrated into the king’s palace to be a guard. She doesn’t want him messing up her plan to keep her mother safe but he’s got a plan to rescue her. I loved this whole story.
Here are the tropes:
ENEMIES TO MORE FAITH JOURNEY PRINCESS & THE GI FORCED PROXIMITY CLEAN ROMANCE ALPHA HERO DANGEROUS SECRETS ONE ROOM/ONE BED
I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are all my own.
I was hooked from the start with Owen struggling to find his place. Being sent to extract Leighton seems like exactly what will give him the boost he needs. I was so sad for Leighton because she was in a no-win situation. Fearful for her mother's safety, but also for her own, her vehemence at not being rescued wasn't surprising!
I appreciated that Owen (Apollo) stayed the course. I appreciated that the author allowed him to make mistakes because he's young and still trying to figure himself out.
The Royal family was a piece of work. All of them, and it was incredibly believable this is how outlandishly rich people would behave. Like Leighton, I wouldn't have trusted their "kindness" as far as you could throw them.
I was on tbr edge of my seat for the entire story!
This is going to make my favorites list this year.
In fact, I'm still waiting for my heart to slow down to a normal level!
I could not stop reading this book. I had to keep going and going and going to find out how and when Owen was going to rescue Leighton.
The way their relationship developed and flourished, despite the constant danger they were in, was incredible and inspiring. I love how Owen kept his faith at the forefront of the mission and leaned on God for every step he took. I loved how Leighton learned to do the same and I loved seeing her fear be replaced with God's fortitude and strength.
Ronie did such an amazing job with this book. I loved how Owen's journey in the military truly prepared him for this mission in life. The way she crafted and revealed God's plan for both of these characters as the novel went on was exceptional!
Apollo and Leighton's story. An old enemy shows himself that tangled with their father's. All their lives they have had said to them, "that they were a problem that needed addressing." A heavy burden for a child to carry and addressed differently as understanding adults. Safari! What animal would you like to see most of all?
Dillion's story next. He turned up in both Atlas's (Mickey/McKenna in Armenia and Apollo's in Paris.)
Wow! I needed this book! The Metcalfe family is my favorite book family so I was so excited to dive into Owen's story. Owen Metcalfe has skills that not everyone is willing to acknowledge, and is reused by the Rangers, and other special forces branches. Struggling to find his purpose, he agrees to help with a rescue operation that will take him into Saudi Arabia to rescue Leighton Kingslake, who he crossed paths before. Posing as a discharged soldier looking for work, he gets hired as her bodyguard which gives him the perfect opportunity to rescue her...if her captors will leave them alone long enough to escape. Owen and Leighton go on an intense journey as they try to survive the wild African landscape and avoid the plot set against them. This book is absolutely incredible! Ronie Kendig has done it again!
I received a complimentary copy of Apollo from the publisher. All views and opinions expressed are my own.
It’s about secrets and it’s about truth. It’s about fear being conquered by faith. And it’s about expectations and about acceptance.
Owen “Apollo” Metcalfe is a legacy kid. His father is one of the original Discarded Heroes and fills some pretty big shoes.
Which leaves Apollo feeling less than when he separates from the military. So when he’s tapped for a dangerous mission?
He goes. His mission? Rescue a young woman being held captive in a palace in the Middle East. One problem.
She doesn’t want to be rescued.
Confused? You’ll have to read the book! And this one has everything, including some very tight spots that you just know they won’t be able to get out of.
Don’t even get me started on that ending!
I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited. Very highly recommend!
I loved the original series and also the authors A Breed Apart series. This book doesn't even seem like it was written by the same person. The plot is improbable, there is no character development and the dialogue sounds like what you would expect in a book aimed at middle schoolers. This was so bad I almost quit reading it.
This book exceeded my expectations! The international intrigue, dangerous safari adventure, and the magnetic romance between Owen and Leighton was breathtaking and made me keep turning the pages. It was also nice to see a few characters from the previous book make an appearance. The action scenes, the settings, and the animals were written in such detail that they came to life from the pages, as if they were real. No spoilers, but the scene with the elephants was one of my favorite scenes I have ever read. I highly recommend this book, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series! I voluntarily read and reviewed this book for the publisher. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I love Nightshade and the Metcalfes, and I'm a sucker for a next-gen series, so this series—and this book especially—is catnip is me. Disappointingly, this book seems to have been rushed out the door, without the author's usual diligence or attention to detail.
Editing: There were instances throughout the book where you can tell the author went back and rephrased something but didn't adjust the surrounding text accordingly. This created discontinuity in some spots and redundancy in others.
Resolution: The author makes a point to establish certain emotions and relationships, but then doesn't show us how/if those have been changed by the journey of the book.
1.
2.
3. This one is more subjective, but
I still love the author and this universe. I've read about 20 of her other books, and none of them have had these issues with editing or story resolution. I'm still looking forward to book three!
Ronie Kendig is an author who will take you to exotic places that you have only seen in movies while also making you feel as if you have lived there alongside the characters.
Owen Metcalf "Apollo" dreams of being an elite operator in the military are over. He thinks he is unworthy. After a princess (Leighton) is kidnapped by a dangerous royal family, Owen offers to help rescue her. He doesn't need a uniform to save lives. He sees this as a chance to prove himself.
This was a thrill ride with dangerous tension leaking off of the pages. No one in this royal family can be trusted. The way Owen wiggles his way into the palace was brilliant. But his true test comes when he comes face to face with Leighton and tries to convince her that she needs to be rescued. The chemistry between Owen and Leighton was undeniable, even as Leighton refuses to acknowledge that Owen is there to safely rescue her, while also keeping her family on the outside safe. Her reasons for remaining in captivity were noble, but she made his job so much harder.
I was just along for the ride as the opulence of the royal family was on full display, as well as the brutality of a family who know no boundaries. The majesty of the wild animals on a safari was an unexpected plus to the story. It was a great place to live in my imaginary world for a time, but the story was so much more than a royal family. Prayer and faith were essential to how this story plays out, even as I was biting my nails wondering when the other shoe was going to drop.'
Thank you to Sunrise Publishing for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Apollo by Ronie Kendig is out and it’s such a good read! It’s the second one in the Discarded Heroes: Scions series.
We now follow Owen Metcalfe as he tries to figure out what to do with his life now that he is out of the Military. Just when he starts questioning he is offered the chance to prove his worth and live up to his Father’s legacy. I found Owen to be a good character to read about. He was a relatable person with his struggles of his plans not working out. I loved Owen’s relationship with Leighton. Seeing how they work together in a difficult situation.
Leighton Kingslake has a secret and people founding out the truth could get her and her family killed. After being kidnapped by the people who put her most at risk, Leighton has to play by their rules if she wants a chance to escape. She wasn’t planning on Owen to come crashing into her life and become her backup. I love the premise of Leighton’s story. Having to let some of your family pretend you’re a princess even though you know you’re not. I loved getting to see how she learns to work and trust Owen as they try to get away from her family.
I read this book in one sitting, I had to know what was going to happen. One of my favorite part of this book was the safari. I loved getting to read about all the interactions with some of the wild life. Definitely made me put going on a safari on my bucket list.
These thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks Sunrising Publishing for the ARC.
This book was so good! I’ve always loved the Metcalfe family, so I was excited to revisit them and get to know Owen. I had a really hard time putting this book down. It gripped me from the very beginning and didn’t let go until the last word.
Owen was an easy guy to like. He felt like a failure. Like he didn’t measure up. Like he was always coming up short. But, man, he proved that wrong time and time again. He was an incredibly likable guy. Hardworking and loyal and just an all-around good guy.
I liked Leighton a lot and really felt for her. She was in a bad situation, to put it mildly. But I admired her fighting spirit and enjoyed seeing the way she and Owen worked together.
I appreciated the note from the author at the beginning of the book. It shed some light on the heartbreaking history that inspired the story.
The settings really came to life. And I thought the safari was amazing! They faced some seriously intense moments that had me holding my breath. But there were some really inspiring moments too. If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, don’t hesitate to grab a copy of this book. I loved it and highly recommend it! I’m really looking forward to the next in the series!
I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
This book delivers everything that one could wish for in one of her books!
Action packed from beginning to end.
I really enjoyed these characters, and loved to see Apollo in action.
Leighton is something else though! But, the more I got to know of her backstory, the more I could understand where she was coming from! That poor girl - she needed to be rescued and basically refused it.
Apollo put himself in harm's way to do all he could to keep her safe.
And, in the meantime, as they got to know each other.... well, I can't say everything here!
The location of this story was also very interesting. I enjoyed the chance to get to know more about these royal Saudis and what it might be like to be captured by them when you are not a part of their culture.
Ronie Kendig delivered again!
Beautiful setting, amazing characters, and intriguing storyline. Excellent read all around!

I’m hooked on this epic series! Ronie Kendig’s high-octane romantic suspense hits all the things I need for a great read.
Kidnapped princesses and elite operators?! I had to see how the author would capture my attention this time. She did, and penned another 5-star sequel in this series.
This seemed like such a prescriptive read for me as I feel a little like Owen Metcalfe at the moment….trained, ready, more than capable, but not feeling useful. Owen, Scion callsign Apollo, has returned home after extensive training and is feeling caught up in the ‘in between’ stage when he overhears a conversation. Feeling like he could be useful, he offers his services.
I appreciated the reminders that (1) we might not yet be able to control our situation, but we can control ourselves and (2) it’s in the deep darkness that we grow the most. Both Leighton and Owen discover these two things for themselves as they work through their dark circumstances, relying on their faith-filled hope.
As much as I loved my armchair safari (on my bucket list) with elephants and lions, I’ll remember this book for this quote:
“If you don’t make sacrifices for what you want, what you want becomes the sacrifice.”
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Owen Metcalfe....oooh, if you know Ronie Kendig books you gotta know the Metcalfe family. I was so excited when I heard a Scion series was happening because I knew a Metcalfe would have to be included. And I am so glad Owen's book is here! He's struggling with who he is. Who he knows he can be, despite the Army disagreeing. But now, he has a chance to prove himself to everyone. He would save her. Leighton is hiding a secret and will do anything to protect it. She's kept this secret her entire life. And she will not let anyone destroy all she has promised to protect. Even if it means going against what her so called rescuer says. But circumstances are not what either expected and they better learn quickly to work together. While I enjoyed the book and all the unexpected happenings, a favorite takes place out on safari. And lets just say, I will always think of this book when I see an elephant. You will have to read the story to get the awe I felt for yourself. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All comments and thoughts are my own. I have already highly recommended this book to friends!
Each time I think I’ve read my favorite of Kendig’s non-speculative books, she comes out with a new one that is just as amazing, and I have to reevaluate my list. From now on, I’ve decided to just say I don’t have a favorite because they’re all just that good!
There are bits and pieces of most main characters I can relate to, but Owen Metcalf’s struggles with being good but not good enough have made him one of the most relatable. The way he allows himself space to grieve what he thought he would do, but doesn’t allow it to keep him from continuing to try, from using his skills to help others, is one of my favorite parts of this book.
And Leighton. Her absolute devotion to her mother and determination to keep her safe, even when she suffers because of it, is so admirable. I adore how Kendig used this defining characteristic of who Leighton is as both one of the best things about Leighton and one of the areas she has to grow in and release to God. It’s such an accurate depiction of real life and how the strengths God has given us are only strengths when they’re submitted to Him.
With the stunning backdrops of Saudi Arabia and a safari tour through Africa, this story is thrill ride that kept me riveted to the very last page - and honestly, I wanted more even after it was done! So, if there’s ever an extended bonus scene or a short story or something more with these characters, you can be sure I’ll be first in line to snatch it up and read it.
Wow! If Apollo doesn't make elite warrior status, then who possibly could? This new novel will make you appreciate safe surroundings and our military warriors in a way that nothing else could.
For someone who supposedly doesn't have what it takes, Apollo has a lot to give, and it's a thrilling journey towards his place of belonging! Kendig knows how to put her characters through the ringer, and I love how she doesn't hold back.
That's true for Leighton, too. She's caught between a rock and a cliff in Apollo, and her determination to protect those she loves is admirable - and while it makes you want to see her get what she wants, it's also makes for a crazy suspenseful story.
I personally love that suspense, though, and I can't wait for the next book in the series. So if exciting, high-stakes stories with realistic settings and heroic characters are your jam, grab your copy of Apollo today.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
What a wonderful story! The author has taken us to exotic places like Kenya for a safari, Paris and Saudi Arabia where Leighton (Nouri) lives like a Princess, all the while feeling that she must follow along in order to save her mother. Can she convince them that she belongs? Owen (Apollo) has just separated from the army and feels like a quitter, like he is not good enough even as he continues to struggle to find the purpose God has for him. The assignment to guard Nouri and get her out unscathed will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I loved all the detail - the palace with all its opulence and formality, but the best were the animals. The safari was all I imagined such an exotic trip would include. The best part was the elephants! So much danger amid all that beauty.
An early copy was received through Sunrise Publishing and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.
High- octane romantic suspense is a complete understatement when it comes to Ronnie Kendig’s Apollo.
Owen “Apollo” Metcalfe feels that’s he always comes up short and is never good enough. He takes on an assignment to rescue a princess. The problem is, the princess doesn’t want to be rescued.
Leighton Kingslake aka Princess Nouri is doing what she thinks is right to protect her mother. She is determined to follow through on that protection no matter the cost to herself.
When Apollo heads to the Central Kingdom to get Nouri out and take her home, the action intensifies on every page. The pair face everything from violent royals to wild animals.
This book is great for readers who like a lot of action, suspense, and romance.
I received an are of this book from the publisher. My opinions are my own.
If you are a fan of Romantic Suspense, you will not want to miss Apollo.
Owen/Apollo has come back home after hanging up his military career. Coming from a line of special ops and military, it seems like a failure. Though he got into the program after two failed attempts, maybe he wasn’t made for that career. Then Owen is presented with the opportunity to use his skills to help rescue a kidnapped princess.
Owen finds himself acting as bodyguard for Leighton. They find themselves traveling with the group to Kenya in the Savannahs. Going on a safari and seeing all the wild animals in their element. Owen is tasked with getting Leighton set free, but it’s a dangerous situation with more at stake. In this high-intensity story, we have forced proximity, lion attacks, elephants to the rescue, intense chemistry, faith-filled, and more.
The setting for this book gave it such a rich element. I also loved reading the author's note and learning that this is based loosely on a true story of the vanishing princesses.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. A positive review was not required. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Apollo was a bit different for me than Ronie Kendig’s other military action.
Instead of the main hero being part of a special ops team, he came in as someone from the outside who also felt like he came up short. I missed the banter you always get with being part of the inside of the team, but Owen’s drive to protect Leighton still provided readers with that intense, broody character.
The story kept me interested since you had this feeling something is planned and is going to happen but you never know what or when. The wildlife dangers added to the suspense level.
I am eager to read the final book in the series to see why the Scions are not fans of the Omen team and what Dillon is up to.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Action packed! Apollo feels like a failure since he didn't make it as a ranger and when his father can't physically help out an old friend he steps into his place to help rescue the man's daughter. Nouri is a princess who has been in hiding but has been kidnapped by the royal family. Along with OMEN a black ops group he goes undercover as her guard to rescue her. There is lots of action, plenty of suspense, some romance and beautiful descriptions of the African scenery. I enjoyed all of the characters and was glad to see a Metcalfe back in action.
So I read the original series featuring the parents, and I'll be honest, Canyon Metcalfe was probably one of my favorite characters. So it doesn't surprise me that I ended up liking his son's story quite a bit.
Owen feels like a failure living in the long shadow of his successful father and uncles. When he sees an opportunity to prove his worth and save the daughter of one of his namesakes, he takes even when it means going into dangerous Saudi Arabia.
I liked that the characters already had a connection and each of their individual struggles.
Wow! This book is intense. When Leighton a.k.a. Nouri is kidnapped and taken to the Central Kingdom, it will take everything Apollo and the Omen team have to rescue her. There is danger and suspense on every page. I loved the safari trip with the animals, especially the elephants. This book is a thrill ride from beginning to end. Thank you to Sunrise Media Publishing for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
He felt like a failure, unable to live up to the achievements of those who had gone before him. She felt that the only way to keep her mother safe was to live a life of subservience and abuse, and she was not keen on being rescued. With danger everywhere and plenty of surprises, they relied on God and each other as they fought to escape with their lives. What a brilliant story!
