I was given a copy of this book by the author at Dragon Con this year on the condition that I write a review. The story sounded a little hokey at first, like a modern sci-fi Noah's Ark. But a promise is a promise so earlier this week I picked it up and gave it a go.

Reader, this is the best debut novel I've read since, I don't know, Carrie? All the more impressive is that Roland Pitts self published it and was just giving away copies.

The story starts when Eli Evans is woken up in the middle of the night by five aliens, and tasked with recruiting 1,000 people to travel to another planet because an unstoppable army is coming to conquer Earth. If you're like me, you immediately have a lot of logistical questions which makes you skeptical of the novel. Rest assured that Roland Pitts covers all of them but never gives you a tedious info-dump. By the end of the book, everything makes sense, everything clicks into place.

Which isn't to say it's perfect, there are a few minor problems that come with self publishing; keystroke errors and the occasional misspelled word nobody caught but those are easily ignored by the sheer quality of the story itself.

I could tell absolutely that the author is an Army Ranger who is really into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but as someone who doesn't know much about either of those I never felt lost or bogged down. Pitts successfully uses his lived experience to create a lifelike main character without delving too deep into the jargon.

More importantly, Salvation Protocol is a complete story, it doesn't require a sequel, but there is definitely room for one, and I really hope Pitts feels the same way.

I picked this up on Kindle Unlimited after reading the description, and it pulled me in right away.

The premise alone is gripping: godlike aliens, a looming extinction-level threat, and one man secretly tasked with deciding who and what gets to survive. The idea of choosing 1,000 people and 1,000 items to carry humanity forward is both fascinating and terrifying, and the book really leans into the moral weight of that responsibility.

Eli Evans is a compelling lead. He’s not some perfect hero; he’s a veteran carrying his own scars, forced into impossible decisions while being hunted by the very world he’s trying to save. The tension stays high as he dodges government agents and assassins, and I appreciated how the story constantly questions whether the Sentinels can truly be trusted or if they’re just another form of control.

What stood out most for me was the ethical side of the story. This isn’t just sci-fi action, it’s about power, secrecy, fear, and who gets to decide the future of humanity. The pacing kept me turning pages, and the sense of urgency never really lets up.

If you enjoy science fiction that blends big ideas with personal stakes and moral dilemmas, this is definitely worth checking out. I’m glad I gave it a chance on KU, and I’d be curious to see where this story goes next.
