Say Yes To The Nemesis

Rate this book
Their rivalry was legendary. Could one reality show rewrite their ending?

Ryan is a hotshot hockey player and Wren’s big brother’s best friend. He has always tormented her mercilessly, making shy, geeky Wren feel like she could never measure up to his effortless cool. She’s loathed him for it… even while secretly nursing a pesky crush on him for years.

When Wren lands her dream job as an executive producer on a dating reality show, she’s thrilled. But then disaster strikes. First, she’s forced to fill in as one of the bachelorettes on the show. Second, the bachelor they’re all competing for? None other than sexy, villainous Ryan.

The producers, delighted by their antagonistic chemistry, sweeten the deal with a big promotion if Wren plays their vapid TV game to win. Forced into close quarters and increasingly ridiculous dates, Wren grits her teeth and pretends to be in love with her worst enemy.

But no one warned her about the dates. The hand-holding. The roses. The hot and heavy make outs. The sneaking around to avoid cameras when the teasing becomes too much. Or the way Ryan looked at her like she was the most breathtaking woman he’d ever seen.

He’s leaning into their fiery banter with what feels like genuine heat. But is it all for the cameras? Or could their adversarial relationship finally ignite into something real?

enemies to lovers, sports romance, brother’s best friend, forced proximity, spicy romance, hockey player hero, sarcastic nerdy heroine, unrequited pining, reality TV romance, island destination, fiery banter, makeover transformation, workplace drama, and childhood rivals

A total editing mess.

This book needs editing, badly. Chapters were out of order, character names and descriptions were super inconsistent (which, when you have 10-- or is it 12?-- contestants on a reality show, made for some incomprehensible reading), and very little made sense with the FMC's job description/role, even for a romance novel conceit.

It really feels like this wasn't proofread before being uploaded.

A bonus star because the MMC was likeable, but otherwise, don't bother reading.

“You were never invisible to me” Alllllll the feels!!!

SAY YES TO THE NEMESIS is the second stand-a-lone book in the WILDFLOWER LANE series from Author Vivian Wood, and from the start carried a weightier air about it which was lightened however by the crackly intense atmosphere between Ryan and Wren. These two have known each other for years and we soon learn that feelings have been hidden V-E-R-Y deeply on both sides.

He carried the burden of abandonment and financial insecurity, while she struggled under the weight of invisibility.

We met Wren in THE ACCIDENTAL HONEYMOON where, as Jay Rustin's sister she very much disappeared into the shadow of her larger-than-life older brother. In SAY YES TO THE NEMESIS, she was shoe-horned, complete with makeover and into front and centre of the dating show, and under the ever-watchful gaze of Batchelor Ryan. It was a wonderful thing to hear her thoughts as she rose like a phoenix from the dark invisibility she'd previously made home. Ms Wood wrote her beautifully.

Hockey star Ryan Haart was the typical easily available male character, and was Jay's best friend. His goal was to remain current and financial. It didn't matter how much money he'd put away, the security never seemed to be enough. Even though Jay and Wren had know Jay and his sister for years, they never appreciated the childhood they'd had growing up.

These were like spark and tinder. Ms Wood did them both well in the development of their characters through the thrust and parry these two had going on. Thrust-insult, parry-return fire, and at the end of their interactions, both parties needed to take time to catalogue their wounds in secret. Wren was unaware how close to the truth her biting comments cut to the bone of his fears and while she carried her own insecurities, it was Ryan who had most of my sympathies. This back and forth was succinctly written as tiring for them both, even as they each hid an relinquished desire and forbidden attraction for the other.

First off, my sympathies lay with Ryan, but as I read my way through and got to know Wren more, every insecurity she exposed made me realise just how much of a stranglehold they had on her. I loved the chemistry that only grew more intense! There was so much to love and so many words that caught my attention, and if I wasn't careful, I’d end up quoting the whole book!

The forced proximity of the dating show meant there was no respite for either of them even as the forbidden attraction began to weigh on them. We all know the format of these shows so check this Ice Skating Date scene;

“Wren clings to the wall like she’s negotiating a hostage situation. Every time I skate past her, she glares like I personally invented ice just to ruin her day. I live for it. The glares. The huffing. The fact that she’s clearly thinking about me. It’s better than silence. Better than being ignored. I’ll take her anger over her absence any day.”

Whoa, insecurity, fear and what he ultimately wants. Wren. Every combative bit of her even as he was convinced she looked down on him and loathed him, his want for her was evident. And that first kiss moment, one of my favourites in any book where only a few stand out, their first kiss very much did. A public kiss no less, where the world ceased to exist around them, and Ms Wood absolutely nailed it.

Ms Wood kept the tension climbing throughout the book and I was reading through, knowing that the proverbial doo-doo is about to hit the fan, then life happened, and I was dragged away from the dam book putting the hates on who or whatever dare disturbed me.

From laughter to tears, Ms Woods kept my attention piqued. I loved the vulnerability both Ryan and Wren put out there, even as they lived in fear of hurt. This was one beautifully written book. I've been a long-time reader of Author Vivian Wood, and with each release I love her writing more. ACCIDENTAL HONEYMOON and SAY YES TO THE NEMESIS just proves how her writing talent crosses over from Alpha Bad Boys into the world of Rom Coms where the male lead is still every bit an Alpha but lives very much on the legal side of life. 5-all-th-feels-romantic-Stars🩷💙✦

“Ryan is my tormentor. My almost bully. He’s also the guy I’ve never gotten over.”

Say Yes to the Nemesis was an absolute delight! I was instantly hooked by Ryan and Wren’s fiery, adversarial dynamic—their push-and-pull tension and razor-sharp banter had me grinning from page one to the final chapter.

“You’ve always been the one I couldn’t forget. There’s never been a version of my life where you didn’t matter.”

These two have always been at each other’s throats, but when Wren signs on to be a producer for Ryan’s reality dating show and unexpectedly ends up cast as one of the bachelorettes, their long-buried feelings are forced into the spotlight. In a world built for the cameras, though, how do you know what’s real and what’s just for show?

“You make me feel brave. You treat me like I matter. And most of all, when I’m with you, I feel…seen.”

Both Wren and Ryan are beautifully flawed, each carrying emotional baggage that makes vulnerability feel like a risk too big to take. Wren, long overshadowed by her brother, struggles to be truly seen—but Ryan has always seen her. Meanwhile, Ryan’s fear of abandonment and poverty drives his every move, yet his love for Wren pushes him to confront the ghosts of his past.

“You are worth every complication, every risk, every consequence that comes with this.”

Watching them face their fears and slowly let each other in was pure magic. Their chemistry crackled, their banter sparkled, and their emotional journey was deeply satisfying. With snark, flirtation, and heart in equal measure, Say Yes to the Nemesis is a rom-com gem that’s impossible to put down.

Ryan is a hotshot hockey player and Wren’s big brother - Jay's best friend. They live across the street from each other. They are about 8ish yrs older than Wren is. Jay has always told Ryan how much older they are than Wren is. We don't see Ryan's hockey teammates in the picture at all really.

Wren is a quiet shy girl. She doesn't like the limelight. She likes to be involved but she doesn't like being the center of attention at all. Wren lands her dream job as an executive producer on a dating reality show, she’s thrilled. But, then the producers realizes they are short one lady, and ask Wren to stand in on the show and be one of the dating contestants. When Jay finds out that Wren is on the same show as Jay he keeps telling her that he isn't right for her, and that he is bad news for her. Ryan is so much older than her she needs to stay away from him.

Around 60% or 70% the names of the contestants keep getting mixed up with who is in the rose ceremony vs who is in the house. Divya, Nikki, JacqLyn, Wren, they keep mixing up who is in the final 2 weeks and the final ceremony. Towards the end of the book, Ryan is supposed to go back to his house, and leave but is outside at the car when Wren leaves her brother's house. Not sure if that was meant to be he was waiting on her? I don't know if this was an ARC Copy error, and if it has been cleaned up or not?

I did receive a free ARC Copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.

Charming and SEXY! This best friends sister romance is so entertaining and fun.
Wren has lived in her brothers shadow for must of her life and now she has a chance to break free from it with her new job. Unfortunately, there’s a twist that she and her brothers best friend Ryan never saw coming and it brings past feelings to the surface.
Ryan has always seen Wren, even when she would hide in the shadows and try to be invisible.
The love/hate relationship between them is only amplified by the reality tv show they’re both part of. For the fans of the show they will be faking their interest for each other but when fake turns to reality their attraction toward one another isn’t fake at all…it’s electrifying and intense.
Ryan a professional hockey player and womanizer never thought he would fall for the one girl who was off limits.
So if you’re looking for a flirty, fascinating and interesting romance with tantalizing and engaging characters you will definitely enjoy Ryan and Wren’s remarkably touching and beautiful story.

Ryan and Wren's story is mind-blowing! I was captivated from the first page to the last and could hardly put the book down. The complexity of the story is fantastic ... describing so many characters, breathing life into each one of them ... it's quite a feat!

Ryan and Wren are my new dream couple, that's for sure. They are a perfect match, you couldn't ask for more! The personal development they each go through, the development they undergo as a couple ... simply phenomenal. Their feelings, their thoughts, their behavior, their fears and worries ... everything is described so vividly that it's all relatable and makes them seem totally authentic.

I simply cannot find enough words to do justice to this latest work by Ms. Wood! It is an absolute must-read in my opinion and definitely one of my reading highlights this year!

Reality TV Tension at It’s Finest
Wren is off limits. Too young, Too innocent. Too everything. Ryan was never supposed to want her. In all the years he has know her, he has been more interested in embarrassing her. Wren has been crushing on Ryan from a safe distance for years. She wrote him off as cocky and selfish. If she gives in to her feelings what will she do when he walks away which he is sure to do. This enemies to lovers romance has so many tropes embedded in it. There is deep emotion and spice balanced by fun banter and humor. Both Ryan and Wren have childhood scars that prevent them from trusting their feelings and the possibility of lasting love even though their chemistry and unbeatable attraction blooms when they are thrown together. Enjoyable read.
I voluntarily read an early copy of this book.

This is a really fun story about a lady named Wren who is a little bit nerdy and also has a love hate relationship with her brother's best friend Ryan. He really knows how to push her buttons but she also has a mini crush on him. She also works work a reality show (like the Bachelor). And when she has to fill in for one of the ladies vying for the dream man's attention, she knows that the Bachelor is none other than her nemesis Ryan. When the show they put on for the production starts feeling too real, like the delicious make out sessions, she starts to wonder if Ryan is also feeling it. I love a good enemies to lovers, brother's best friend trope list. Vivian's characters and romcom stories are always a delight to read. I love the flirty banter between Ryan and Wren and also their teasing and taunting. Highly recommend this one.

This was a really good read. It’s an enemies to lovers, brother’s best friend, and close proximity all rolled into one. Wren gets her dream job, but what she didn’t expect was having g to be a participant in the reality show her nemesis is starring in. Ryan is her tormentor and Wren’s brother’s best friend. He is starring in a new reality show to find his dream girl. He just never realized his dream girl is actually his best friend’s little sister. There is drama, angst, truths revealed, and it pulls out the feels. You need to read this and watch just how Wren and Ryan really are perfect for each other. There were times when I was shaking my phone like I was trying to shake the characters and some I just wanted to really bonk them on the heads, or more. These two were made for each other and Vivian did a great job showing just that.

Wren is more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it so her anxiety about have to be a contestant in a dating show rather than the producer is understandable. This anxiety is only increased by the fact that the bachelor on the sister happens to be her brother’s friend Ryan who she shares an antagonist relationship with.

Ryan is a professional hockey player who is well aware of the fact that Wren is younger than him. Whenever he and Wren are together the sparks fly whether they are sparring with each other or giving into the chemistry between them however being with her has complicated written all over it.

The interactions between them are entertaining, the characters are intriguing and the romance between them enchanting even amidst all the turmoil of why they find themselves spending time together.

I love this entertaining story with Ryan and Wren’s story. Her brother’s best friend Ryan, a hockey jock, she doesn’t understand, she hates arrogant attitude, a man who always picking on her. A man her brother has warned to stay away from his baby sister. They are Fire and Ice together and now fate they’re thrown together in an impossible situation. She’s hoping to break out of brother’s shadow and prove herself, but the unexpected happens and everything changes. What happens when feeding become involved, feelings they never expected in this forbidden love story? Can she and Ryan actually get along? Will she prove her worth to the world? To Ryan? When I tell you that Say Yes to the Nemesis has ALL of my favorite tropes rolled into one, I mean every single one, and I was SO excited to dive right in! Ryan and Wren are an instant fav book couple for me. They have just the right amount of snarky shared history, cringe loving moments, and tons of over the top romance, once they finally realize how much their hatred equals passion. What adds an extra layer of tension and humor is the setting of this book being on a reality tv show where Ryan is the bachelor and Wren is forced to be one of the bachelorettes vying for his attention. When the heated moments start feeling real, Wren wonders if Ryan is feeling it too or if it is all for show. I love this author and I love this read! Definitely a favorite of 2025!

Ryan and Wren have known each other for years because he's her brother's best friend, and they clash. Even though these two know each other, I love how the author brought them together in a dating reality show where she unexpectedly gets cast as one of the bachelorettes and he's the bachelor. I will admit that I don't watch many reality TV shows, but I do love a good enemies-to-lovers romcom, and Vivian Wood writes the best. From the fun and flirty banter to the drama, angst, humor, and steam, this is a great read. Say Yes to the Nemesis is book two in the Wildflower Lane series. I highly recommend this book, this series, and this author to everyone who loves reading about fun characters and entertaining storylines. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

The fiery enemies-to-lovers plot had incredibly good bones and kept me reading to the end. Unfortunately, the execution reduced it to a 3.5 to 4 ⭐️ optimistic rating. There were quite a few inconsistencies and plot holes, especially in the 2nd half. A chapter or two seemed extraneous or out of order. I wish the activities of and the emotional impact of the reality show was explored just a bit further. Why was Wren put in as mole but never did mole-like things? How could she standby and watch him get up close and personal with other women?

If you don’t nit pick, there is enough here to keep you entertained.

Unexpected Reunion

Wow what an emotional story of childhood rivals reuniting in an unexpected way. Reality television and finding love was not what Wren intended when she got a job as one of the show's producers, but circumstances cause a change to the script. It was an interesting read as Ryan is presented as the bachelor for women to compete over. The tension and chemistry between them were intense and off-the-charts. I did not want to put this book down until I got to the very end. It was absolutely delightful.

Filling in for one of the bachelorettes on a dating show, with the bachelor being your brother’s best friend who always made you feel less? Yeah, not such a great idea. But the chemistry they share isn’t just for show.
I have to say I loved it. They have to play a role, but it’s hard to identify what’s real and what’s just an act. But the feeling can no longer be denied. Wren and Ryan are in a setting where nothing is private, people watching them grow towards each other with flirtation and wonderful banter.
A book I will definitely be reading again.

Wren has always had a slight crush on her brother's best friend Ryan growing up. Ryan being 8 years older than her always seem to pick and torment her. She finally now gets job she has been wanting as an executive producer but gets a surprise to see how the leading man is in the show. The producers want her to go from behind the camera to in front of it. Will she do it knowing she will have to face him knowing how he has always treated her? Will this be a enemy to lovers by the end? What will her brother say when he finds out they are doing this? A great book from the start.

I’m giving this one 3 and half stars and it took me awhile to read it tbh… I kept putting it down hoping it would get any better but it didn’t .
I really wanted to love this book but I didn’t … I found the concept really good , I liked Ryan and wren from the last book and really liked Ryan in this book as well got to find out the real Ryan and why he is the way he is… it was wren who I couldn’t gel with… she was really hot and cold and dare I say it whinny….even when they both admitted their feelings she still sabotaged it and then was whinny about it…unfortunately this one wasn’t for me…

Ryan is a professional hockey player and has had is fun with women. Wren is a person who always tries to hide and be invisible. Wren gets a job on a reality show where she is suppose to be behind the cameras. When one of the constants backs out, Wren is asked to step in. This is a show where Ryan is the bachelor. You need to read the story to see what happens to Ryan and Wren. The story was good and you wanted to keep reading about Ryan and Wren.

What a delightful story and the characters are so appealing the readers become invested in them. The story is funny, quirky, sad and charming all at the same time. There is a line Wren says when talking to Ryan after an interlude away from the set. She says “We’re two half people, trying our hardest to become whole.” Given their backgrounds she is so right but through Vivian Wood’s words they do indeed become whole and as the saying goes the sum of the parts is greater than the whole!

When Wren gets her dream job, never did she imagine she would be a participant on a dating show along side her brothers best friend Ryan who has questionable morals, how do you handle airing your laundry for the world to see and handling the crush you’ve been harboring for Ryan for years? Getting closer, not being able to grip reality and trying to figure out if what you are feeling is real or fake? Is it just for the cameras or does he feel it too? Another good read by this author.

I read this book to the finish to see if it would ever get better. It didn’t. there were a lot of inconsistencies. I had to page back and reread previous sections thinking I missed something. One of the chapters described three roses on the platter but as the chapter progressed he only gave out one rose. Some of the contest contestants were miss named.

I have really enjoyed this author’s other titles but this one fell flat.

I absolutely loved reading this book.
Wren and Ryan are frenemies. He's her brothers best friend and she likes to hide in the background but she has always had a crush on him.
When they are thrown together on a reality dating show their true feelings come out but can they believe that its not all fake for the show?
So much drama and plenty of tension but also so much love.
Loved the ending.

Fiery, funny, and entertaining. This sizzling enemies-to-lovers romance delivers sharp banter, undeniable chemistry, and just the right amount of angst. Wren and Ryan’s love-hate dynamic crackles on every page, blending sports swagger, reality TV drama, and heartfelt vulnerability into a story you can’t put down. A perfect mix of spice, humor, and swoon-worthy moments that will leave you grinning long after “The End.”

The concept of this book is good. But…really needs to be edited! There are paragraphs that are essentially rewrites of the previous paragraph. Saying the same thing, slightly differently. One chapter talks about a fight they had and an activity they did…and neither happened until the following chapter. At one point, Ryan picks a girl and then later, it’s a different girl. And there’s a lot of unnecessary, cheesy dialogue between Wren and Ryan.

What an absolutely amazing story this was. A gorgeous hockey player. A beautiful woman who has never been seen because she was always hiding in plain sight. A reality TV show. And lots of drama unfolds. This has to be the best book this author has written. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

I'll tell you right up front that I am no reality TV fan but in spite of that fact I found myself easily charmed by Wren and Ryan's romance. Lots of sparks and tension light up this story, while plenty of emotions and feelings quickly have your heart passionately invested in this couple. A plethora of drama comes into play as the story unfolds in this cute and swoony romcom.

This is the second book in the Wildflower Lane series. Wren and Ryan's Story was emotional and full of drama. It was an entertaining story about two people with completely opposite personalities. Despite that, they had intense chemistry. I really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop. A great story with great characters!
