"Hot Wings and Homicide (A Good Truck Mystery Book 2)" by Carmela Dutra didn't connect that it was this series based off first glance of the cover. I had to read the description to connect the two. They're just very different cover styles. I honestly wouldn't have guessed that this was a cozy mystery from the cover either.
Beth, with her twin Seth, and Beth's BFF/Seth's GF (yes, same person) and still making their chicken food truck business work. Their next event is the weekend Bay Food Festival. Beth's ex-boyfriend shows up in town as a food vlogger/critic and is causing drama everywhere. Until he's not. Now the local detective seems to have it in for Beth and Seth despite several good other suspects.
Despite not initially connecting the two books, once I got reading this one I found it just as entertaining and cozy as the first book. The characters are hilarious and relatable. The story kept moving and me guessing. There were several good suspects that kept pulling my focus. Overall, very funny and very interesting.

This was a cute mystery. I liked the food truck festival setting and the twin characters premise.
I did not like that the main character Beth is written so immature. I also do not recommend the audiobook because this characteristic was just heightened in the audio. I also thought the person her ex left her for was “ick” and didn’t really have a place in the overall mystery.

Twins Beth and Seth Lloyd have secured a fantastic spot in the vendor section at the Flavors of the Bay Food Festival for their Kluckin’ Good food truck. It’s a food lover’s dream with speciality food trucks, live music, and carnival games. With Beth’s BFF Rylie in her chicken costume and her boyfriend, Seth, in a cow suit, complete with udders, they are ready to draw in the crowd to line up for their wings, sliders, iced tea, and lemonade. It should be three and a half days of food and fun!
Then, the contemptible food critic and Beth’s ex, Brad Dawson, arrives on the scene, and it isn’t long before Beth finds his dead body and a Kluckin’ Good tumbler mug way too close for comfort. Both Seth and Beth had confrontations with the deceased early in the week, so of course, they are the prime suspects, and Detective Wilcox is determined to get at least one of them to confess. But Beth is determined to clear their names, and she doesn’t give a cluck about what Detective Wilcox thinks. She is ready to “put on her big girl feathers and suck the kluck up” and dig deep into the foul/fowl food critic’s life and reveal all and deep fry the true killer, legs, giblets, and wings!
Beth is the older twin born on leap day, while Seth was born on the first, and he tries to use that to his advantage any way he can, but it didn’t keep him out of that cow costume. They are close and protective of each other, and their interactions sound like those of true siblings. Beth is still adjusting to the fact that her best friend Rylie is dating her brother, and their public displays of affection make her cringe. Rylie is trying to learn to cook all the food truck offerings, but both Seth and Beth know she and their customers are better off with her taking orders and passing out coupons in her chicken suit. Detective Drew Kane/”Detective Pretty Boy” is around a lot; he has run up a tab of over $300. You can cut the romantic tension between him and Beth with a chicken wing. All these characters are relatable and fun. New character Teriyaki sure made me smile.
Brad Dawson was a first-class jerk, and contrary to what Detective Wilcox thought, the man had made a long list of enemies. I enjoyed how Ms. Dutra plotted this mystery. The clues were dispersed at a leisurely pace, allowing readers time to get to know all the suspects and their motives. Filled with twists, it took me some time to focus in on the killer, but I wasn’t positive until the final chapters. Kane being off duty was a nice touch, as he is truly smitten with Beth, and he was able to support her.
What I loved about this book and A Murder Most Fowl is the humor that surges throughout the whole story. The author uses a deft hand to insert laugh-out-loud moments in perfect places, keeping the story cozy and lighthearted; when situations could have gotten cumbersome. While the first book in the series was a delight and made me laugh more times than I could count, the author topped herself with Hot Wings and Homicide. The pacing was impeccable, the mystery was so well-plotted, the characters were engaging and entertaining, and the humor was off the charts. I should have put the book down when I took a quick drink of soda. Lesson learned. Thankfully, my Kindle is soda-proof. I can’t wait to read book three!
Cozy mystery lovers, this book/series is not to be missed. I highly recommend both A Murder Most Fowl and Hot Wings and Homicide. Run, don’t walk, to your favorite bookstore! Be prepared for a Kluckin’ Good time. You can thank me later.

The Food Truck Mysteries are a must-read for cozy mystery fans. The first book, A Murder Most Fowl, was kluckin' amazing, and Hot Wings and Homicide is just as good (maybe even better).
The characters are really marvelous. I love the sibling sleuths, who can banter with the best of them, assistant Rylie, and the emotional support chicken Teriyaki.
And just when I thought I for sure didn't need another amateur sleuth/law enforcement romance, I hoped things would heat up between Beth and Officer Pretty Boy.
The mystery is top-notch: well-plotted, perfectly paced, and entertaining to the last bite.
The story ended with recipes I just had to make and a craving for more Food Truck Mysteries!

Honestly at the start I felt like I was climbing to keep up as I’m an idiot and didn’t read the first book in the series (fully on me but also proved that this can 100% be a stand alone which I LOVE with series of this nature) but once I got into the story, wow was I hooked. Having so many characters may have been slightly confusing but wow did it make it hard to figure out the real murderer. Had me hanging on for more.
Overall I think the characters were all incredibly well fleshed out, the conversations seemed natural and writing was easy to digest. I had my suspicions and a cheeky guess at the murderer but i think that is only because i read so many I know how to pick them.
Extremely enjoyable read and would love to read more of Carmela’s work in the future especially the book before this one, it is now on my TBR (I’m an idiot)
Took about 20% for me to get into but read the last 80% in less than a day
So glad I got to read this early

“…don’t Nancy Drew yourself into a situation you can’t get out of.”
I absolutely love Carmela Dutra’s witty and entertaining writing voice, and I devoured Hot Wings and Homicide just as quickly – and with just as big a grin on my face – as I did its predecessor. Bethany (Beth), her twin brother Seth, and her best friend (and Seth’s girlfriend) Rylie keep the banter high, their deep mutual affection and quick humor setting the tone of the story and immersing me into the narrative. And of course there’s swoony Detective Kane, who clearly is (at the very least) attracted to Beth. I am completely here for his understated flirting, the simmering chemistry between them, and the obvious-to-everyone-but-Beth signs that he’s falling for her. But… he may have some competition if he doesn’t make a move soon, and I’m a little grumpy about it haha. Needless to say, I am team Detective Kane all the way.
A local food festival sounds like a lot of fun and a great opportunity for Beth & Seth’s recently-inherited food truck, Kluckin’ Good. Of course, since this is a cozy mystery, it will also be eventful in other ways. Namely, the murder of Beth’s smarmy ex who has resurfaced as a smarmy food critic. With Beth – and Seth – in the crosshairs of an overeager county detective (not Kane), they need to get to the bottom of who actually killed Brad – and fast. A whole festival of food trucks & small businesses at a certain food critic’s mercy means a whole festival of suspects to narrow down, and I enjoyed trying to sort the clues from the red herrings along with Beth and Rylie. (Seth mostly stays in protective lawyer mode… which is admittedly hard to take seriously when he’s dressed in a cow costume, complete with udders that festival attendees keep trying to milk – much to his amusing aggravation.) I didn’t zero in on the killer until Beth did, which doesn’t say a lot for my sleuthing skills, but does prove that Dutra is quite skilled at crafting a stellar mystery. And … I never thought I would say these words… but I absolutely adored the chicken with a huge personality that found her way into Beth’s heart.
Bottom Line: Carmela Dutra has done it again – absolutely delighted me with her perfect blend of humor, banter, food truck drama, and clever mystery. The writing is snappy and engaging, and I don’t think there was a single page of Hot Wings and Homicide that didn’t have me grinning or giggling… or swooning over yummy Detective Kane once again. Bethany and her twin brother Seth and her feisty bestie Rylie (who’s also dating Seth) make such a fabulous team, be it in the food truck, life in general, or solving murders… and their newest addition? Mark this down, because it’s the only time I will ever call a chicken endearing. My guesses about whodunit were all over the place – and all wrong – but I didn’t even care about my sleuthing failure because I was having so much fun reading this novel. Such a great dynamic in this series, and this second book, and I’m impatiently waiting for book three!

I thought the series starter was good, well this second book is even better and does a great job as a stand-alone plus it doesn’t give any spoilers if you want to go back and read the series starter. This clever cozy mystery is based on an inherited family food truck business. Twins, Bethany (Beth) and Seth Lloyd are the owners of the Kluckin Good food truck left to them by their Aunt Dolly. This truck comes with a mascot suit that is proudly worn by Beth’s bff Rylie, who as of recently is also Seth’s girlfriend. After the fatal fiasco that was the reality food show/contest The Food Truck Showdown, Kluckin Good has never been busier, what with Beth helping to solve a murder and all while providing great food. So here we are, at the annual Flavors of the Bay Food Festival and Beth finds herself stumbling upon another body. Oh, but not just any body, the body of the weasel who broke her heart while professing his love karaoke style to another woman. Of all the food events in California, why did Brad Dawson, new food critic for The City and Beyond magazine, have to show up strutting like he was all that and a chicken leg too?
Of course, there was a very public confrontation and some shouting, plus maybe a punch was thrown as well as a napkin, so both Beth and Seth are at the top of the detective sheriff’s suspect list. Since this is not the city jurisdiction, Detective “Pretty Boy” Kane is not in charge of the investigation. Grover County Detective Pamela Wilcox is asking the questions and when it comes to being questioned, Beth, with her little bit of sassiness, has an inability to keep completely quiet. Seth, who is a lawyer when he isn’t helping with the food truck, is constantly telling her to invoke her 5th amendment right.
Great aspects of this book include the back and forth of the siblings, the “might be flirting” with Kane, the Kluckin’ Clues list, plus a magically small, confined space. Don’t let all the funny bits fool you, Beth’s sleuthing skills are quite good and ruffle more than one feather as she manages to add more than one suspect to her list. It turns out that Brad was not well liked by anyone from restaurant owners to former best friends. Plenty of suspects means that there are plenty of opportunities for red herrings and I was led astray a few times.
Needless to say, this cozy is going to keep you clucking, I mean chuckling. The emotional support chicken is one spoiler that I just have to share because it is BRILLIANT. Not every cozy mystery pet has to be furry, and Teriyaki adds that little extra flavor to another great plot. Of course, there was a very public confrontation and some shouting, plus maybe a punch was thrown as well as a napkin, so both Beth and Seth are at the top of the detective sheriff’s suspect list. Since this is not the city jurisdiction, Detective “Pretty Boy” Kane is not in charge of the investigation. Grover County Detective Pamela Wilcox is asking the questions and when it comes to being questioned, Beth, with her little bit of sassiness, has an inability to keep completely quiet. Seth, who is a lawyer when he isn’t helping with the food truck, is constantly telling her to invoke her 5th amendment right.
Great aspects of this book include the back and forth of the siblings, the “might be flirting” with Kane, the Kluckin’ Clues list, plus a magically small, confined space. Don’t let all the funny bits fool you, Beth’s sleuthing skills are quite good and ruffle more than one feather as she manages to add more than one suspect to her list. It turns out that Brad was not well liked by anyone from restaurant owners to former best friends. Plenty of suspects means that there are plenty of opportunities for red herrings and I was led astray a few times.
Needless to say, this cozy is going to keep you clucking, I mean chuckling. The emotional support chicken is one spoiler that I just have to share because it is BRILLIANT. Not every cozy mystery pet has to be furry, and Teriyaki adds that little extra flavor to another great plot. Twins Beth and Seth bicker and tease and each are overprotective of the other, but together they make a formidable team along with Rylie. I really enjoyed seeing Detective Kane in this off duty role and appreciate as he looks out for Beth. Other characters are not so pleasant. The more we learn about Brad the more despicable he becomes, and there are other unpleasant characters too, namely Layla and Caren. The variety of characters, even the likable ones, made good suspects. Of course, my favorite new character is Teriyaki! I think she's an even better mascot than Rylie in the chicken suit or Seth in the new cow costume. Of course, Teriyaki can't exactly hand out fliers and samples.
But it's not just laughter, or even murder, that makes everything so enjoyable. There's depth here-and not just in the quality of the sauces. Love and friendship are mainstays even as secrets come back to bite several of the characters in the second Food Truck Mystery.

A cozy mystery filled with the best food, the coolest of friends, and plenty of suspects to write down in your notebooks! This book brings us back with Beth and Seth, the best chicken-making twins that run their family's food truck and now they're taking on a food festival filled with exciting charm and a side of murder.
In book 1 we met the twins as they participated in a televised food truck competition and found themselves smack in the middle of a murder investigation! Now they're back and attending an exciting weekend of food trucks and foodies galore. But Beth's ex-boyfriend shows up at the event and his rotten behavior hasn't changed much. A fiery confrontation takes place for everyone to see and Seth, Beth's twin, gets into it with Brad.
Not long afterwards, Brad's body is found and Beth was nearby when it happened. She saw a little and heard a little, but ultimately all of the evidence makes Seth and Beth look like the guilty parties here. As she does it best, Beth decides to investigate the weekend away and question as many festival patrons and participants as she can to determine who might have had it out for Brad and why they might have made her look like the one whodunnit.
These books are so much fun and Carmela Dutra has created a loveable cast of characters from the twins Beth and Seth, to their best friend Rylie (she's the chicken mascot) and even the main Detective who seems to be romantically interested in Beth but still hasn't made his move yet. We even have a flashy new sidekick for Beth names Teriyaki! Her glamorous, yet flamboyant Silkie chicken friend, that makes many appearances you won't want to miss!
I love the way the clues slowly trickle out and the focus is much more on the personalities of everyone involved and allowing us the reader, the honor of trying to figure it out. Nothing is given away until the very end so you have the entire book to evaluate all of your evidence before you know the truth.
For all my cozy mystery fans that also love food-focused humor, this is one you won't want to miss and a series I highly recommend for an entertaining weekend of reading and sleuthing!

So I picked up Hot Wings and Homicide fully knowing I hadn’t read the first book, and honestly? It didn’t stress me out at all. I never felt like I was missing some big emotional backstory or inside joke. The book does a decent job of letting you settle in and figure out who’s who without holding your hand or making you feel behind.
This one feels like a cozy mystery you’d read on a lazy afternoon when you want something fun, slightly messy, and low stakes in the best way. The food festival setting was probably my favorite part. There’s just something about murder plus competitive food vibes that works for me. Food trucks, egos, exes, and drama all smashed together. It kept things moving and gave the story a nice sense of chaos without being overwhelming.
Beth is the kind of main character I didn’t get annoyed by, which is always a win in this genre. She’s juggling way too much, trying to save her reputation, her business, and her brother, and that frantic energy felt real. The twin dynamic with Seth added some warmth and humor without turning into a gimmick. I liked that it stayed grounded instead of leaning too hard into quirky-for-the-sake-of-quirky.
The mystery itself kept me engaged, even if I wasn’t blown away by the twists. I was curious, I wanted to know what actually went down, and I didn’t feel bored or tempted to skim. For me, this landed right in that solid middle ground. Enjoyable, entertaining, and easy to read, but not something I’m still thinking about days later.

Hot Wings and Homicide is the second book in the Food Truck Mystery series by Carmela Dutra with A Murder Most Fowl being the first. If you read the first book you fell in love with twins Beth and Seth and Beth's best friend Rylie. If you failed to read the first book, you have plenty of time to catch up or just dive right into Hot Wings and Homicide .... either way works.
In Hot Wings and Homicide Beth and Seth who co-own a food truck will be attending the Flavors of the Bay Food Festival. They inherited the Kluckin' Good food truck from their aunt and have strived to make her proud and attending this festival is one step closer to doing that.
Unfortunately, a few days before the festival starts they run into Beth's ex-boyfriend Brad at Sugar and Spice, and they have a big blow out fight where Seth gets involved and things do not end well. Fast forward to the first night of the festival where Beth is heading back from the bathrooms and finds a body on the ground which turns out to be Brad and he is dead from a head injury.
Even though Beth and Brad broke up and he humiliated her, she still didn't wish him dead. So naturally her and Rylie begin their own little investigation. But the more she looks, the longer the suspect list gets and she hesitantly has to put her twin and herself on the list even though she knows neither of them are guilty.
Even though there are only two books in this series, so far, readers cannot help but fall in love with Beth, Seth, Rylie and everything else within the story.
There are two things that you may not about this series .... the food talk and the food talk !! This book makes readers hungry !!! So I highly suggest grabbing a snack before you start reading ......

The chicken costume used to promote their business in the first book was hysterical, but Dutra ups the ante with a new cow costume to advertise their sliders. After losing a bet, Seth is forced to wear it at the festival. When he complains that “his udders are hanging out,” Rylie warns him: "Careful shaking those around. This is a family event."
Speaking of Rylie, she and Seth are now a couple, much to Beth's horror when she catches them making out while dressed in their animal costumes. "You're ruining farm animals for me," she laments.

The fact that Beth (and Seth) got involved on a personal level because of Brad being Beth’s ex made the stakes so much higher and the entire case incredibly fun. My absolute highlight of the whole book, though, was Beth’s pet chicken that she named Teriyaki. It was simply diabolical!
I laughed out loud so many times while reading this. I’d highly recommend picking this up if you’re in need of some pure food for the soul - and as a wonderful bonus, the author included recipes at the end of the book. Next book, please!

This is the second book in the Food Truck Mystery series. While I didn’t read the first one beforehand, this book can be read as a standalone. I never felt lost or like I was missing anything.
Overall, the storyline was cute. The pacing felt steady throughout, and there were plenty of suspects to keep me guessing. I loved the sibling banter between Beth and Seth because if you have a sibling, you know that dynamic never really changes, no matter how old you get. The introduction of a chicken, named Teriyaki, as the sidekick/pet of a chicken food truck owner is top tier humor!
Cozy mysteries are a new genre for me, and I genuinely enjoyed this one. It delivered murder, humor, a chicken sidekick, and a sprinkle of romance all wrapped into one. This read like a Hallmark Movies & Mysteries film in the best way and gave me everything I crave from a cozy mystery. I’m definitely planning to go back and read book one, and I can’t wait to read what kind of trouble Beth, Seth, Rylie, and Teriyaki find themselves in next!

Beth doesn't mean to keep finding dead bodies. Sadly, this time it's Beth's ex, and that is a load of trouble for both her and Seth. Beth wants to clear her and her brother's names with the police, so she starts looking into things. I felt bad for Beth when she found out things she didn't want to learn about her ex. Mostly on how terrible he is after their breakup. Beth's ex is really a terrible guy.

The characters I love in this story keep getting better and better. The ones I like the most are Beth and her best friend, Riley. Her brother Seth is just as much fun as Riley is while being the voice of reason.
Oh, don't forget about the two recipes in the back of the book. They are Plucked and Truffle Fries to enjoy with Golden Gate Heat Wings.

Hot Wings and Homicide is the second book in the Food Truck Mystery. Beth and Seth own their Aunt's food truck. In this second edition, Beth and Seth set up their food truck at the Bay Area's biggest food event. Beth's ex Brad is back in the area and gets in heated argument before the event with Beth and Seth when they run into him. As Beth is walking around the event she stumbles on Brad's body and it. Due to the heated argument Beth and Seth become prime suspects.
This is becoming one of favorite cozy mystery series to read. I love the banter between all the characters. I enjoyed how Rylie and Seth had to dress up as a chicken and cow to promote the food truck. It added extra humor to the story. I am glad that this mystery didn't take place in Detective Cane's jurisdiction, but he was still involved in the novel. I enjoy how Detective Cane's character knows just what to do to get a rise out of Bet. I look forward to the next one in the series.

Its a delightful murder mystery, with cozy "small town" vibes, since it centers around a food festival where all the vendors know one another...and they all have a history with the food critic who winds up dead on the opening day of the festival.
No one has a more complicated history with the dead man than our protagonists, Beth and Seth...or do they?
I'm not an avid mystery reader, but I didn't have it all figured out before the big reveal at the end. I don't doubt there are readers out there who may see it coming, but I wasnt one of them.
I'll definitely be checking out the first book, too, now that I know how much fun this one was.

This cozy mystery was such a fun ride from start to finish. I loved the food truck festival setting, it gave the story a vibrant, bustling atmosphere, full of mouthwatering food descriptions and quirky characters. It felt fresh and different compared to other cozies I’ve read.
Beth and Seth, the chicken-wing twins, are such an entertaining duo. Their sibling banter made me laugh. When Beth’s ex-boyfriend Brad shows up at the festival and quickly becomes the murder victim, the tension skyrockets. With both twins looking suspicious, Beth dives headfirst into sleuthing, and I enjoyed following her as she pieced together clues and questioned suspects.

Twins Seth and Beth are cooking up delicious food, feeding the hungry masses, and figuring out who killed Beth’s ex boyfriend, Brad. Everyone had a reason, and they’re all acting suspicious. Who’s it going to be?
Ok, so I didn’t realize this was the 2nd book in the series, but I didn’t feel lost. It can be read as a standalone.
Let me start by saying that Seth and Beth are a hoot. Their dynamic is pure sibling energy, and their banter is top notch. It’s made even better with Rylie, Beth’s best friend, and Seth’s girlfriend, adding her snark and flare. They are the trio that’s keeping the twin’s late aunt Dolly’s dream alive, while also trying to make sure no one else gets killed. And the more the story unfolds, the funnier, messier, and more suspenseful it gets; not to mention the list of suspects gets longer than a Walgreens receipt. There are also emotional moments between the twins that show the power of family, devotion, and how much it can hurt when you feel like they don’t have your back. And while pain can make or break a connection between loved ones, Seth and Beth are determined to unite-showing the bond they hold dear-even while they are poking fun at each other.
As someone to primarily reads horror, this was a nice palette cleanser, and lighthearted read-even with a murder involved. It also caused me to snort and chuckle more than a few times. This book gets my seal of approval. 4.5 stars

This is a hilarious murder mystery that kept me hooked from start to finish. It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the first installment—you’ll enjoy book two so much more if you do. The characters are wonderfully well developed, the banter is sharp and funny, and the storyline paired with the writing style makes this an absolute joy to read. Make sure you have plenty of time set aside, because this book is incredibly hard to put down. I can only highly recommend it and can’t wait to read more in this series.
