Unshakable Faith: How to Stand Firm in a Culture of Lies

Rate this book
As millions walk away from faith and countless others water down biblical truth to fit cultural preferences, Aaron Graham, pastor of one of the fastest growing and most diverse churches in the country, exposes seven pervasive lies threatening Christian faith today and how to maintain authentic faith without compromising conviction.

Few people know exactly what to believe anymore. "Speak your truth" has overtaken "speak the Truth." Christians today find themselves torn between defending Christianity as an institution and reshaping biblical truth to fit cultural preferences. Both paths lead away from authentic faith.

Graham addresses common lies Christians are confronted with today such as:

God is distant: When we embrace true worship and repentance, God draws near and transforms our hearts with His presence.
Faith is private: Bold public witness flows naturally from authentic surrender to Christ, making our faith visible in every area of life.
The Bible is outdated: Daily engagement with Scripture as God's living Word provides timeless wisdom and power for navigating modern challenges.
Enemies must be canceled: Radical forgiveness and enemy love reveal the heart of Christ and break cycles of division that poison our culture.

Drawing from his experience as an urban pastor ministering at the intersection of faith and culture, Graham offers a better way forward: a path that holds fast to biblical truth while engaging the world with Christ-like love. Through practical wisdom and historic Christian practices, readers will discover how to discern truth from half-truth, maintain vibrant faith in a secular age, and become part of a new generation of believers who approach the world as Jesus did—with unwavering truth and unflinching love.

Pastor Aaron Graham has written a book that every urban, Christian, working professional should read. Speaking from decades of pastoral experience in an urban setting, Graham writes a prophetic and pastoral warning that is bold, clear, and compassionate. He has a rare combination of a passion for God, a well-respected academic background, and a sensitivity to multiethnic environments that make him the perfect person to write this book. You can tell from the parts of his story that are included in the book, that this is a man who lives what he's preaching.

Graham lays out seven lies that Christians believe that cause us to drift from our faith. These lies are subtle, appear harmless or even commendable on the surface. However, after they take root, they gradually lead to a drift away from orthodox Christian faith and practice.

Graham exposes these lies and pairs each with a corresponding Christian practice to arm Christians to resist the drift.

As a pastor in Washington DC, pastoring to mostly 20-somethings, I will be recommending this book to many in my congregation.

Graham covers a lot of the internal struggles of a church congregation today. He identifies several counterfeit, spiritual identities of church-goers who advocate, orate, activate and dominate current culture wars. They include the Armchair Activist, the Self-Centered Worshiper, the Divisive Influencer, et al. The author provides the basis (“the lie”) behind their motivation and a scriptural remedy besides a warning for anyone tempted to become one of “them.” There are chapter summaries and questions to help the reader or book study group.

Graham particularly has good recommendations for engaging with poverty and avoiding “cancel culture” by loving your “enemies.”

While this pastor focuses on the main conversational issues—LBGTQ+, abortion, etc.—floating through evangelical circles and seeks revival, he doesn’t address the real problems: the respectable fruit of the flesh/sins (Gal. 5)—idolatry, sorcery (relying on other powers), hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division (somewhat addressed in the book), envy…. LIke most pastors, he focuses on the “biggies”: sexual immorality and wild parties, drunkenness (addictions), impurity, lustful pleasures, etc. While he deals with “cancel culture” which exhibits division and dissension and quarreling, the target of the Cancellers are the culture war emphases. I wish more pastors would deal with the more obvious faults in our spirits. All of these have become socially acceptable by certain sub-cultures and yet the focus is on the more obvious or ostentatious motivations. Perhaps we are more willing to forgive and show mercy to the ambitious and envious than we are to the lesbian, abortionist or uncharitable person. I can’t say how the author views this. It can be important to note not only what’s discussed but also what’s not discussed.

I’m appreciative of the publisher for providing an advanced copy.

Pastor Aaron Graham’s message “Unshakable Faith” emphasizes the importance of building a spiritual foundation that remains steady even when life’s circumstances shift. He teaches that genuine faith grows through trusting God’s character, obeying His Word, and staying rooted in spiritual community. Ultimately, the message calls believers to stand firm in a world filled with uncertainty by anchoring their hope in God’s unwavering promises.

“Unshakable Faith” also explores the divine nature of spiritual culture—a reality that does not merely react to secular culture but rises above it. The New Testament describes the Kingdom of God as a spiritual culture (Romans 14:17, NLT), and believers as citizens of heaven rather than participants in earthly systems (Philippians 3:20, NLT). Pastor Graham affirms that true resilience comes from spiritual formation shaped by Scripture and community, aligning with the Apostle Paul’s instruction: “Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him” (Colossians 2:7, NLT).

This book really helped me to understand the usual process through which people deconstruct from the faith. I greatly appreciated the author’s insights to this, and it will help me be more aware of the signs I should look for in my circle of friends.

James 5:19-20

[19] My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, [20] let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
