The AI Cybersecurity Handbook

Rate this book
An up-to-date exploration of how AI is transforming cybersecurity and how to implement AI in your organization’s cyber defenses to meet today’s evolving threat landscape In The AI Cybersecurity Handbook, author Caroline Wong examines AI’s impact on both offensive and defensive cybersecurity strategies. Wong explains how artificial intelligence has transformed the way cyberattacks are carried out and how technology professionals prepare for and defend against them. On the offensive side, the author explores how AI is being used to automate, accelerate, and personalize attacks against targets. She shows you how these technologies make cyberattacks cheaper to carry out, harder to detect, and easier to automate at scale--broadening the impact beyond initial targets to include partners, third parties, and critical connected systems. For defenders, this book demonstrates how to use AI to evolve past traditional, rules-based cybersecurity defense to an adaptive model that evolves in real-time to counteract emergent risks and novel attack vectors. These new systems rely on continuously updated data inputs and form resilient bulwarks against formidable threats. Inside the Hands-on strategies for minimizing operational barriers to AI implementation to enable new capabilities for defenders and allow for the use of powerful tools, like smart data enrichment, AI-powered query engines, and self-initiating security actions Up-to-date discussions of how to use AI to accelerate your cybersecurity responses while improving their accuracy, including anomaly detection, threat identification, and dynamic mitigation processes Expert advice for building resilient AI-enabled cybersecurity without compromising on AI ethics Perfect for cybersecurity professionals, IT managers, developers and business leaders looking for actionable guidance on the integration of AI into their IT security practices, The AI Cybersecurity Handbook offers accessible strategies well-suited to people with varying levels of technical expertise. It’s a must-read book for everyone with a stake in safeguarding digital assets.

The author presents a balanced and operationally grounded examination of AI's role in cybersecurity. Rather than advocating technological optimism or fear, it consistently argues that AI amplifies existing cybersecurity principles while introducing new technical, operational and governance challenges. Its central message is that the future of cybersecurity lies not in autonomous AI systems, but in effective collaboration between intelligent machines and responsible human leaders operating within mature, well-governed security organizations.

List of take home points including …

1. Artificial intelligence fundamentally changes both cyber attacks and cyber defense by dramatically increasing speed, scale, and adaptability.
2. Behavioral analysis increasingly replaces static signature-based detection as organizations confront continuously evolving AI-assisted threats.
3. AI introduces entirely new attack surfaces, including training data, machine learning models, prompts, AI pipelines, and software supply chains.
4. Protecting AI requires securing its complete lifecycle through governance, monitoring, validation, and disciplined engineering practices.
5. AI serves as an augmentation technology that improves human performance rather than replacing cybersecurity professionals.
6. Responsible AI deployment requires transparency, accountability, privacy protection, and meaningful human oversight.
7. Leadership, governance, and organizational maturity ultimately determine whether AI strengthens or weakens cybersecurity.

A solid overview of the broad issues involving AI and the world of cybersecurity. Coming from the world of data science to cyber, I used this book to learn about the ins and outs of cybersecurity as much as I used it for AI.

The reason I docked a star was because a lot of the terms, acronyms, and/or jargon really needed explaining the first time they were introduced. This book would have done better with a glossary or acronym definition list. Also, one major question that should have been posed to the reader is, Should we even be using AI for our application? The book takes AI use as a default and doesn't challenge the reader to be sure they need it in the first place before using it.

Overall this is a very good intro and I recommend it for folks starting out in InfoSec or who are in it but want a springboard to learn more about AI.

I learned a lot about AI foundations, about how threat actors are using AI to boost their operations, about the opportunities that we as defenders could adopt to improve, and why ethics are important in this field.

This is not a technical book, It is not a hands-on manual, but it's a good reference to adopt AI in our organisations.

The only thing that was disappointing was the supply chain chapter, It was so focused in AI supply chain instead of how AI is threatening and how AI can help the supply chain ecosystem.

I read this book in manuscript form, serving as editorial project manager. It is readable and clear in its discussions of AI, the risks it presents in the realm of cybersecurity, and the potential for cybersecurity professionals to benefit from AI as they deal with risks and actual attacks.
