100 Ghost Stories to Die: Volume 5 by Anji Matono was an okay read, but it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed overall. While the artwork is well done, it doesn’t quite reach the heights I was hoping for.

The biggest letdown for me was the storyline. For a series that promises ghost stories meant to send shivers down your spine, the narrative in this volume felt rather flat and lacking in depth. Each story seemed to follow a predictable formula, which made it difficult to feel truly invested or surprised by the outcomes.

The artwork was probably the strongest part of this volume, but even that felt like it was missing something. Anji Matono’s drawing style is solid, with detailed character designs and spooky visuals, but it didn’t evoke the same level of dread or psychological discomfort that I would expect from horror manga. Matono’s drawings are technically good, but they don’t have the same visceral impact or unique flair that makes horror art stand out.

In the end, 100 Ghost Stories to Die: Volume 5 was just an okay read. While the artwork was decent, the lack of a compelling storyline left much to be desired. If you’re a fan of horror manga, you might enjoy it for the visuals alone but don’t expect to find anything particularly groundbreaking or chilling here. It's one of those reads you can finish, appreciate for what it is, but not think too much about afterward.

didn’t like these stories as much and the in between parts were less compelling… i really dislike the cliffhanger— not that it ends on one just the way it was written :/

i was also gonna add that for the 50th story out of 100 it was kinda meh, but now I’m wondering if maybe it’s meant to be a hint about Yuuma? Like the thing he’s talking to, “us,” is a mirror, so he’s talking to “himself” except it’s the real Yuuma, who’s trapped inside his own body with a demon trying to take over completely… Perhaps it’s the demon telling Yuuma the stories, perhaps he’s the one telling them to the demon, but now I am wondering….

Probably my least fave volume. Not as scary and creepy as the last one.

Halfway through! And still more questions than answers. Am I happy that a police officer is investigating this family? Am I nervous? What is Yuma talking to when he tells these stories? He's definitely looking at something and even taking the time to clean it (and it took a lot of wipes to clean). Is the house haunted or the family?

Definitely some winners in this volume. 'Schrodinger"s fridge is giving me chills. Honestly, we should start taking the doors off old fridges. Too many horror movies have stemmed from that idea. 'Nesting Dolls' was both hilarious and scary. Love my dude waking up on the couch with a gut and just going, 'Huh, must have had too much lunch' when it was a demon growing inside him. 'Riding Duo' and 'Loud Noise' both had excellent final page gut-punches. 'Mistaken Identity' had a great twist at the end. Very enjoyable all around.

I'm interested to see if we're going to start getting some answers about Hina, Yuma, Umakin, the horse, the police, or the ghosts, any time soon. But I'm hooked until the end now. 4/5

A mitad de la historia total (son 10 vols.) y puedo decir que estas historias cortas siguen dándome escalofríos. Además que todavía no entiendo bien que esta pasando con el narrador.
Solo quiero que al final este bien. 👀
