The Tale of Luvelia Kingdom, Volume 2

Rate this book
The birthday celebration for Prince Alvis begins with his first dance with Lady Erina... and ends with an attempt on Alvis's life.

As Alvis slowly recovers, Erina refuses to leave his side. Erina's blossoming feelings for the prince are growing stronger by the day, and as such, she hopes to close the distance between them... But for whatever reason, Alvis seems determined to keep his fiancée at bay.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the assassination attempt reveals the perpetrator's possible connection to Lillian — the young woman for whom the former crown prince betrayed Lady Erina. But why on earth would Lillian be involved in the attack...?

Unless, of course, the poisoned arrow by which Alvis was struck was not meant for him at all.

This was fun, I liked this time we also got some more glimpses of Erina as she discovers her feelings for Alvis. In the meantime Alvis is wounded and still doesn't seem to care for women which just makes me angry, yes, there are women who will use you for the fact you are the crown prince, but do you think that Erina cares? She just wants to be with you and get closer. I do hope that he figures things out, I am at least glad that there are others that want them together and be happy, I hope the maids can help out.
Then there is a whole assassination plot along with crazy-ass Lillian who clearly thinks she is the heroine or something.

Uhhhhh WOW. That's sure some SUPER internalized misogyny from the male lead!

"...I should have known. Women are liars, after all. As soon as they get the chance, they'll stab you in the back in a heartbeat."

Yiiiiiiiiiiiikes. What a line to end on, too... And here I thought we might just be getting some ace representation, a male lead who just wasn't interested and didn't have a thought for anything but his duty. Honestly, this feels...sort of like it came out of nowhere. He seems to respect and genuinely care about his sister and all the maids he knew while growing up, and is kind to Erina, so...where did this come from, all of a sudden? It's definitely mood whiplash, and seems super out of character.

Well, now I want the next one just to see why he feels this way, and what the heck is going on here, though I can't say that I'm at all happy about this plot twist. :|

The rest of the book was nice, like the previous one, too. It was nice to see Erina working so hard to take care of Alvis, for once in her life not caring if it was "proper" or not. It's sweet to see her coming to terms with the fact that she's falling in love with Alvis, and letting herself trust him, though it's also...a little faster than I expected/hoped for. (Give me my slow burn, dammit!!!) Also........she did almost kiss him without consent while he was sick in bed, but...he also kissed her without consent, though that was just to keep her from screaming when there was an assassination attempt...so maybe it sort of kinda "evens out"...? (No, it's sus on both sides, really.)

Anyway...I'm definitely disappointed at the turns this volume took, but do want to keep reading, at least for now.

A mixed bag of a volume for me! The highs are interesting (the magic system, the plots, the ending) but the romance feels a bit rushed and so do part of the world building.

not as strong as the first volume, imo, since it was more focused on the romance and I'm surprised to say that's not my favorite part of this series! it doesn't feel as strong as the intrigue. but still a fun time 🙂‍↕️

3.5 ~ Kept the same feel as the first volume, it's nice to see them slowly get to know each other.
