Emmy Award winner Kerry Washington returns as Dr. Virginia Edwards in Audible’s heart-pounding supernatural thriller that pits faith against fear and pushes the fate of humankind to the edge.
The battle between good and evil continues as Virginia and her infant son Joshua flee from Detroit, pursued by the sinister Luther Bell (Giancarlo Esposito) and his Morning Stars cult. With her estranged husband Ryan and Moses (Dulé Hill), a devotee with a mysterious past, Virginia finds unlikely allies in Samson (Rhenzy Feliz) and Delilah (Ebony Obsidian). Together, they uncover the truth about Joshua's place in an ancient prophecy. Each perilous step of their journey is guided by Virginia's haunting visions while Bell's forces close in, threatening to tear their world apart. As natural disasters erupt, Virginia must embrace her role as both mother and chosen protector. But will it all be too late?
I had to take a star off for all the baby crying and shushing the baby and soothing the baby it’s annoying, excessive and distracting from the story. Shhhh, it’s ok it’s ok…more crying. Every time Joshua cries whatever dialogue is paused to attend to the crying. It’s wholly unnecessary and pulls me as the listener away from the story. The story is just ok not the best of the audible originals they’ve come out with. Voice acting is good. Story not all that compelling the constant cat and mouse is not exciting and rather bland. This story could’ve been told in half the time. Better writing and editing needed as 2-3hr and cut the crying it would be a more compelling listen.
I was initially quite hopeful about this one. Esposito is a terrific villain and I adore his presence in anything. Unfortunately, it takes a step forward with one leg, just to take a step back with the other.
Where to start - for one thing, the book feels a lot less supernatural. The tight connection with a reincarnation of Christian mythology feels really muted, with characters supposed to bear resemblance to bible characters sharing little other similarities in their arcs besides the name. There are seldom any mysterious situations, and those here mostly boil down to "Ahaaa, I was expecting you", which is beyond lame. There is probably a paradox about how a book that is actually more realistic in how it develops actually ending up being more open to scrutiny about verisimilitude, and oh boy is there scrutiny to go around.
The good guys are just moronic and almost comically incompetent. The bad guy is inconsistently intelligent, making some 4D chess moves and then making absolutely dumb strategic decisions, which everyone can see a mile away will backfire. Someone literally used the phrase "You're the smartest person I've ever met" while talking to Virginia, and oh boy, is the bar near the core of Earth? She literally makes the worst decisions in every situation. This is consistent to an overall theme of being told that X thing is Y, but never actually seeing it in practice. It feels like everyone is under some mass hallucination, and why the stupid plot device baby is actually needed that badly from the bad guys is never really presented convincingly and with that, nothing else really is; this is a combination of events that make no sense and not in any way that is remotely good.
Overall, skip on this one, unless you will have an easier time agreeing with someone telling you what you should think about a concept than actually giving you a good reason to think so for yourself
I liked the first one, so I'm bummed I didn't like this one. I felt like there was so much going on. I like Kerry Washington but, unfortunately, her voice was a bit too distracting on this one. And the baby crying was too distracting as well - I get the significance, but I felt too overstimulated while the plot stopped so much. I felt like there was also too much plot going on? or maybe it didn't flow as well? I definitely liked the plot of the first one better. I would skip this one.
first season was decent. second was unbearable. i get that it’s a performance audio, but these episodes could be halved in time from the quantity we spend listening to kerry washington cry and soothe a baby. also the quantity of sirens running thru the background were really distracting.
besides that, the story is weird and crappy and disjointed. if there’s a third season i won’t be listening.
This was very unnerving to listen to. It all happens at the same time - main character crying at the drop of a pin, baby crying, and being sucked into the story at the same time. I liked the story and enjoyed it very much but the other two things made me want to pull my hair out, so 3 stars.
I hope they give this a season 3 cuz i was in this story for a whole say and need more. Virginia trying to figure out what her dreams mean and Samson and Delilah trying to stop Luther was soo good. That ending made so much sense and the fog scene was everything. I need more of this story
Part one was enjoyable. Way too much whining. The production was very distracting. Found myself fast-forwarding a lot and never seemed to miss anything (still followed storyline throughout). It was an even more difficult listen at normal speed - an increase to 1.5 made a small improvement.
I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot! I must say, there were many times Virginia annoyed me but maybe this was part of how the story was to take place. hopefully we will get a season 3!
OUTSTANDING!!! Great read/listen… Could easily be a movie! Amazing performance. Wonderful narrations and story line. Would highly recommend and we need a part 3 asap!
It started good, even engaging, the first part left me wanting to see how the story would develop. what a disappointment that second chapter has been, especially the ending. only good thing is that it is free i guess. but i still wasted my time with something that should have been a DNF
Fantastic from beginning to end! The connections between the characters were well played and deeply rooted- tying everything back to the origin message. Every voice allowed you to imagine the storyline and scenarios well. The dialogue and inclusion of biblical scripture in a mystery was fun to read.
