as with all anthologies, some pieces resonated much more than others. a few stuck out in literary terms, but this whole book is primarily a feeling of safety & warmth & collectivity. these beautiful spaces exist anywhere, for someone. how lovely to be able to read of them here.
subtractive process and earth inferno my personal standouts. and very excited to read more about marie maitland
I didn't get along very well with this at first and I asked myself why I keep trying to read books of personal essays instead of fiction which is what I like. But actually it's just that there are some stories which feel more relevant than others. 20-something Spittal Street is written in a disjointed way so that I had to re-read it to follow but it ended up being one of my favourites. Little Gless Box grabbed me instantly and really captures the tragi-comedy of being a young queer person. Jeff Meek's personal but also academic description of the gay scene in Glasgow was also interesting as it laid the foundations for the scene that I discovered 10 years later.
