Cursed Brides

Silenced Beauty: A Wild Swan Retelling

Rate this book
An enchanted tale of love, betrayal, and courage.

Alianna lives on a quiet farm with her brothers, happy and content until one day she receives a terrifying vision of the royal mage usurping the throne. She turns to the only people she trusts—her brothers, loyal palace guards. But instead of saving the realm, her warning unleashes a devastating curse. Her brothers are turned into swans and gifted to the queen, and Alianna is silenced by a curse that robs her of her voice.

Desperate to free them and break their curse, Alianna enters the royal bridal competition, determined to get close enough to break the curse and expose the threat within the palace walls. Yet, as the contest unfolds, she realizes that her brothers’ fate is only the beginning. The kingdom itself is in danger, as well as some others. She must maneuver court intrigue if she wants to keep her wits about her and remain in the competition.

Prince Calix never wanted his bride chosen for him by his parents, as tradition dictates. Disguised as a servant, he infiltrates the competition to find a bride of his own choosing—and perhaps, a bit of freedom. But the deeper he delves, the more he uncovers secrets that shake his loyalty and threaten everything he’s ever known.

As shadows grow longer and danger draws near, Alianna and Calix must decide who they can trust—and whether love can bloom amid silence, secrets, and sacrifice.

Perfect for fans of fairy tale retellings, magical curses, and friends-to-lovers romance, this is a story where silence speaks louder than words and the fate of a kingdom hangs in the balance.

Silenced Beauty is one of the eight novels in the Cursed Brides series, a standalone, multi-author collection of no-spice fairytale retellings. Each book in this enchanting series tells the tale of a cursed maiden who is forced to participate in a royal bridal competition and, of course, finds love. Can be enjoyed in any order.

*Warning there is mild violence and death in this book.

Silenced Beauty is the first book I've read by Ashley Mendoza, as well as the first in a multi-author series of fairy tale retellings called Cursed Brides. It has made me eager to read more of both. This book really nails it as a retelling of "The Wild Swans" with action, romance, and intrigue. "The Wild Swans" doesn't get as many adaptations due to being somewhat lesser known, and I think this is my favorite adaptation that I've read of it thus far. The addition of a bridal competition and psychic visions help to spice up the plot, and the Christian theming is tastefully incorporated into the story. This book does an outstanding job as an introduction to both this author and the Cursed Brides series as a whole.

When Alianna has a dangerous vision of an evil sorcerer's betrayal to the crown, her entire family is cursed to prevent her from speaking out about it. Her eleven brothers are transformed into swans and delivered to the king as a gift, and her voice is forcefully removed. In order to get her brothers back, Alianna infiltrates a bridal competition for the prince at the palace. Unbeknownst to her, Prince Calix is not interested in having someone else select a bride for him, so he also infiltrates the competition by disguising himself as one of the servants to the contestants. He is pleased to be assigned to the lovely Alianna despite her lack of ability to speak and teaches her sign language to serve as her translator.

The silencing curse in "The Wild Swans" is similar to "The Little Mermaid," one of Hans Christian Andersen's other fairy tales, and is handled in a similar way as other adaptations of that story. Alianna communicates as much as she can through writing and eagerly learns how to use sign language so Calix can be her interpreter during the competitions. She is presented as intelligent and a fast learner, as well as a devout follower of her faith, by obtaining this world's version of a bible and holding it close to her heart. Her unique personality shines through, and her bond with Calix grows throughout their lessons as he protects her from other contestants who wish her harm.

This book has a good balance between action and romance. It's darker than some of the fairy tale retellings I've read in the past, but it has plenty of levity to prevent it from getting too depressing. The villain is a worthy threat to the determined protagonists. He is powerful, dangerous, and ruthless. I was on the edge of my seat trying to determine how Alianna and Calix would stop him before it was too late. Though they aren't able to prevent every tragedy, they are excellent heroes to root for as they use their skills and resources to stand up against him.

Silenced Beauty is a thrilling retelling of "The Wild Swans" that masterfully weaves together action, romance, and intrigue, with a brave and intelligent heroine and a swoon-worthy hero. Ashley Mendoza's adaptation is a promising start to the Cursed Brides series, and I can't wait to dive into more of these enchanting fairy tale retellings. Each book in the series retells a different fairy tale, incorporating a bridal competition element that enhances the original stories.

This fairytale retelling was a wonderful fantasy romance with elements that any no spice reader would love! There were curses, a competition, secret identities, court intrigue, royalty, villains, biblical references, and many twists that I didn't see coming! I loved the characters, how they endured in their hardships, how resilient the FMC was, and how charming the MMC was. The world building was phenomenal and really put you in the medieval royal courts.
When Ali and her brothers are cursed by the evil Mage Zeer she enters a bridal competition to save them. She befriends the servant assigned to her, and together they try to figure out how to break the curse and save the kingdom from the evil within. However, Cal has secrets of his own that could jeopardize their relationship.
Will they figure out the key to breaking the curse in time? Will Cal open up to Ali in their pursuit for the truth?
I received an Advanced Reader Copy with no expectation of a review.

I would have been thrown out of that bridal competition so fast for fighting a certain snotty princess! The curses were wild, but Mage Zeer got what was coming to him. I need a shape, shifting cat ASAP! The female main character is a total vibe for standing her ground and expressing her true opinions in front of the entire court, all while being mute!! That main male character was so charming that I wish he was real so I could introduce him to my niece lol. Needless to say that I am a forever fan of Ms. Mendozas work.

This was a charming fairytale retelling, with hidden identities, curses, and a slow burn romance. I loved the bond that grew between Cal and Ali, him teaching her sign language to communicate, and how they could be themselves.
I enjoyed the layers of secrets and betrayals, the bridal trial, and their unexpected love story.

Synopsis:
Alianna lives in a quiet farm with her brothers. They live a happy and content life together. One day, as she was attending to her mother’s roses, she received a terrifying vision of the royal mage taking away the throne. She turned to her brothers and also her trusted servants to tell them about her vision but before she could do anything to save the kingdom, she was cursed mute while her brothers were turned into swans. Desperate to find out about how to break the curse, she decided to join the royal bridal competition, where she met a man who is going to be her servant that is going to take care of her throughout her stay in the palace. And the man who is taking care of her has a secret identity. Will she able the find the way to break the curse? Will she and her brothers be free? Read Silenced Beauty to find out!

Review:
These two are just so adorable and love that Cal taught Alianna sign language so that she can communicate and also him helping her to interpret during the classes and tests that she need to attend. Love how he and her brothers protected her. And she always depends on the Lord to give her strength to fight her spiritual battles especially the nightmare she had that thoughts kept on blaming that she exists but with the Lord’s help she managed to conquer it and there are lots of biblical values in it too. Can’t spoil the story you will have to read to find out.
They both work together to take down the evil Mage Zeer who is trying to get the throne and they also prayed for each other to ask the Lord to protect them and also give them strength and wisdom to save the kingdom. Love his best friend Bevan and his trusted thief friend, Yasmin who also encourage him to tell Alianna the truth about his identity since he is in disguise hehe… Both of them are quite scene stealers and hope that they will have their happy ever afters too. Hehe… The twist and turns of the story are so good in this story. This book made me smile, laugh, swoon, and it’s making me want to learn sign language.

P.S Lolz…Cal teasing Bevan is so hilarious. And him and Yasmin talking in sign language secretly during the Alianna having tea with Lady Edrea.

What I learn?
Spiritual battles are truly real and Satan will always find ways to tempt you and also make you have worries, overthinking, and anxieties lurking around you. But these spiritual battles you can’t find alone it is with God, we only can fight it. Depend on him and always remember Jesus is the light to our darkness. We can always cry out to him for help. He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Forgiveness. Forgive those who had wrong you because God had forgiven us though how wrong we are. It is not an easy thing to do since the person had hurt you deeply. But God is the only one who can help us with it and we just need to leave everything to Him and ask Him to help you to have a forgiving heart.

I was gifted complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own Thanks to @ashleymendoza_author for the ARC.

This is the 1st book of Cursed Brides series written by 8 amazing authors. It is a Wild Swan retelling. Can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

I loved the way the author wrote this Wild Swans retelling in such a unique and interesting way. The plot and characters were very well-created and I loved Yasmine and am intrigued by Arrow. Ali and Cal's relationships was also really sweet to read and I loved how Ali passed all the tests by telling the truth and being naturally kind. I really loved all the faith-filled themes and messages in this book, as well as how this book also added in a lot of Biblical events that were retold in a really different way. However, my main issue with this story is that there was too much going on in the entire book that made the relationships less meaningful as the main characters never really got much of a chance to grieve their loved ones or have humour-filled moments and interactions. I feel like this book focused more on the plot and the fast-paced storytelling kept me hooked on the book, but I would definitely have preferred for there to be more interactions so that I could have gotten to understand the characters better and fall in love with the side characters as well such as Yasmine, Arrow, Ali's brothers, Rachel, Deklin, Bevan, etc. Despite this, I really enjoyed the book as it was really well-written and I definitely cannot wait to read Henry's story and I would love to find out Yasmine's and Cal's relationship! The author did a very good job of making sure this book is a thrilling read to anyone who loves clean romance, original retellings, faith-filled content, and a fast-paced story!

Having faith is a beautiful thing. I really thought it was creative and expressive how the author went about truly making this fairytale shine with such a wonderful amount of belief. Even when all hope was lost, even with all the struggles they challenged, there was a lot of impactful twists and turns that this story had taken.
When Ali gets a vision impacting the future of the kingdom, she writes a letter to her brothers, who are royal guards. Unfortunately, the evil Mage Zeer had found out and cursed her to be silent and her brothers to be swans. He stole her brothers and gave them as a gift to the queen. When a bridal competition comes up for the prince, she jumps at the opportunity to enter and find a way to be near her brothers and break the curse. What she doesn’t expect is to fall for her servant, Cal, who hides his own secrets.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Silenced Beauty, a retelling of a Wild Swan. Ali challenges issues that are brought up and make people think, which I feel gives her character a good personality. She might be scared to face the mage that had cursed her and her brothers, but she goes through and preservers. Even being able to learn sign language just to communicate really was a clever way for her to speak. I have always enjoyed this fairytale and was fortunate to get the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful ARC. Thank you so much for this opportunity, all opinions are my own.

I loved this story so much! This is my first book by this author, but it will not be my last!

I really loved the characters in this story! Alianna is so strong, given everything she has been through. I can’t imagine being in her position. She is sweet, intelligent, generous, and determined!

Callix is a great MMC. I appreciate that he does not think he is better than others because he is a royal. He had some haughtiness about him, but not in a way that made him treat others poorly.

I did get a little frustrated when they argued about their “secrets,” but luckily the author did not drag this out and it was resolved rather quickly, instead of becoming a vessel for drama.

I loved the religious symbolism in this. This book is much heavier in the religious imagery than other fairytale retellings I have read. As a Christian, I really enjoyed seeing the parallels to Christianity in the story. I hope others who read it are touched by it.

There is some mild violence in the book, but nothing graphic. There is plenty of action as they try to break the curse and fight the villain.

I loved the themes of love, trust, kindness, morality, and forgiveness.

Overall, this is a beautiful book with a lot of heart and meaning. It would be wonderful for older teens - like a Christian YA book club, if such a thing exists.

I recommend this story to anyone who likes fairytale retellings and religious fantasy.

I received an ARC from the author, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

ARC REVIEW⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4.75/5)

I absolutely adored this story! This is my first experience with this author, and let me tell you, it definitely won’t be my last!

The characters are just phenomenal! Alianna is a powerhouse—so strong after everything she’s faced. I can’t even begin to imagine what she’s been through! She’s sweet, clever, generous, and fiercely determined, making her a character you can't help but root for!

And then there's Callix, the amazing male main character! I love how he doesn’t see himself as above anyone just because he’s a royal. Sure, he has a bit of that royal arrogance, but it’s balanced out beautifully; it never turns into him treating others poorly.

I did feel a bit of frustration during their “secrets” argument, but the author handled it so well! Thankfully, it didn't drag on forever and was resolved quickly—no unnecessary drama here!

There’s some mild violence, but nothing overly graphic. The action is exciting as they race to break the curse and face the villain!

I fell in love with the themes of love, trust, kindness, morality, and forgiveness.

Overall, this book is a stunning journey filled with heart and meaning.

If you enjoy fairytale retellings mixed with rich religious fantasy, I wholeheartedly recommend this story!

I received an ARC from the author, and all my thoughts and opinions are my own!

Eleven brothers who are all royal guards, cursed to be swans. Their sister cursed to silence because of what she knows. One bridal competition. One crown prince who is determined to defy tradition to pick his own bride.

There’s a lot going on in this book. The pace is fast, and the plots run thick. So many twists appeared that I did not see coming. The lore is rich, and I’m curious as to the other countries mentioned and the supposed conflict. There are hints at other fairy tales in the Kingdom of Ashtier’s history. The characters are fascinating. Alianna can see visions of the future, typically when she pricks her finger on a rose thorn. Callix is stubbornly determined to find his own bride despite the rules of the competition, but his hiding of his true identity causes problems later when Aliana finds out just who her assigned servant really is. Together, they make for a rather interesting pair.

Although there is much to like about this book, I also struggled with the plot and characters at times, so I would rate this book as 3.5 stars. As other reviewers mentioned, the plot has so many moving parts that some of them don’t feel fully fleshed out. Still a good book overall, and just because I had issues with these pieces doesn’t mean every reader will.

Alianna bounces between confident, shy, naive (not in a good way), and distrustful. She is capable of standing against the king’s council and sees that something is clearly wrong with the conflict situation. Therefore, why is she so trusting of Lady Edrea when Callix and Yasmine, who proved their willingness to help her, clearly know more about the castle and its inhabitants and are distrustful? Callix also seems a little entitled with his position of privilege making it unnecessary to truly learn about and see his friends.

Additionally, I believe that there should be a balance of mercy and justice and times where I think justice is necessary. Justice is not always pure revenge, and mercy needs to be tempered with genuine remorse (Parable of the Unforgiving Servant). While this book didn’t quite find that balance for me, it gives potential for future books.

If you’re a Christian who likes a strong presence of Christian faith elements in your books, you will like Silenced Beauty. Bible verses are quoted throughout. In this book universe, God is Sol, and Jesus is Solis. This is only one religion out of many in the kingdom, and its followers are persecuted, with the Bible’s equivalent being grounds for treason. There are visions that are prophecy-like. Despite my preference for religious elements to be a little more smoothly integrated, I appreciate that Mendoza wanted to pay homage to her faith in her writing.

For readers who want a clean, no-spice fairytale retelling that reflects faith values with a strong emphasis on mercy, this book will be perfect. It’s clean in language and romantic content.

This is an arc review. Thank you so much for letting me read this book.

The wild swans is one of my favorite fairytales so I love when I can find a good retelling of it. This book kept my curiosity piqued the entire time.

I loved the faith based themes as Ali is trying to keep her faith in a land that is persecuting it and Cal is newly introduced to this faith and is faced with following these beliefs or continuing to follow his won.

I also feel as though Ashley Mendoza left the door open for more tales to be told from these characters! Which I love! I’m curious to find out what happened to Yasmine or how Henry’s mission from Solis will turn out. And what about arrow and his merry men! Don’t tell me their galavanting days of vanquishing army’s are over! Also I would love more of Bevan. I feel like he almost had a gender bent goosemaid tale in this story though he wasn’t given a position as a servant in the castle and didn’t find love … yet.
Curious what I’m talking about and who these people are? Well then read the book!

Silenced Beauty by Ashley Mendoza
Alianna lives on a quiet farm with her brothers, happy and content until one day she receives a terrifying vision of the royal mage usurping the throne...
Another new series of fairytale retellings, hooray! This is the first of the Cursed Brides series which will feature cursed maidens and bridal competitions. Silenced Beauty is a Wild Swans retelling although I also noticed elemnts of Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, and Aladdin which was pretty fun. Plenty of Christian elements as well, but with different names to fit the fantasy world. Overall I liked the plot with the bridal competition and a couple hidden identities (more than you probably expect!) but just didn't love the author's writing style. There were word choices that kept throwing me off and I found it jarring the way it would switch between present and past tense. Looking forward to the rest of this series!

ARC review

This Wild Swans retelling was so well done. It took me a minute to really get into it but once the main character and her brothers are cursed, I was really drawn into the story.

Alianna and her 11 brothers are cursed by the evil Mage Zeer. While Alianna’s voice is taken from her, her brothers are turned into swans and gifted to the queen. The only way to figure out how to break the curse is to join the bridal competition for the princes hand in marriage.
Calix, the prince in disguise, is assigned to help her through the competition. As they grow closer, they work together to figure out the plot that is in the works to overthrow the king and queen. Will they be able to break the curse and Alianna and her brothers in time to save everyone?

This was a clean, no spice, story with lots of intrigue and adventure. The characters are relatable and well developed. I would recommend this book!

This was such an easy read! Full of biblical references and an adventurous journey with political intrigue. First of all, I love when the FMC can keep up with the details of the world surrounding her. Not everything is about swords and punches. Second, I appreciate that the MMC was not extremely charming and had deffects. When someone falls in love, the whole package is included. About the romance, it was kinda first sight trope, but they got to know each other truly despite the difficulties. Besides, they had memorable scenes. Clue: 💀🔥🕵️‍♀️👸

The action was good towards the end of the book. Also, I AM SO glad there weren't 11 names for each brother for me to memorize... The best part for me was the kindness and strenght that Ali (FMC) drew from reading The Word of the Lord. Even when everything seems lost, He has a plan. It was truly shown in this retelling and it touched my heart.

Thanks for the Arc!! Go read it 🦢🦢

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5 stars)

I really enjoyed the fast-paced storytelling in this book — it pulled me in right from the start and kept me turning the pages. The plot and overall storyline were engaging, and I liked where the author took things.

That said, I do wish there had been more character development and deeper dialogue to help me connect with the characters on a more emotional level. The story moved so quickly that I hope to pause and learn more about the characters’ motivations and relationships.

Still, it’s an entertaining read with a solid premise, if you are looking for a quick read of Romantasy & fairytale retelling, you will definitely enjoy the momentum and twists.

Thank you to Ashley Mendoza for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Fairytales are really something special. The resiliency, courage, hope, and kindness that shine through never get old. This retelling delivered on that and more.

This was a loose retelling of the Wild Swans. It wove in fairytale aspects with religious overtones. It kept the message of good triumphing over evil and discovering/believing in your self worth.

I also liked how they used sign language as a way to communicate while under the curse. It was nice to see that included.

I received a voluntary ARC for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

No Spice (kissing is as far as it gets)

⭐️⭐️⭐️This was a solid book but ultimately not for me. There was nothing wrong with the book. I just didn’t connect to it.

The wild swans has always been one of my favorite fairytales. I absolutely loved this adaptation.
The two main characters were really likable and relatable, I loved them both and they made such a nice couple. I thought Calix was going to be one of those stereotypical Prince Charmings, but he wasn't! His character was very intriguing and I felt like he grew a lot in the story, just as much as the heroine.
I really loved how the book felt very much like it was set in a reimagined version of the early underground church, l've never seen something like that done in a fantasy.

Tropes
- friends to lovers
- hidden identities

I really REALLY enjoyed this story. The plot moves quickly, lots of tension and the author did a great job in building up the frustration and desperation of the characters. I was angry at Edrea, Zeer and ‘Bevan’ by the ending. And that plot twist with them escaping….🤯…I’m excited because that means more stories to come right?!

I totally want more of Yasmine. She was a no nonsense character that I clicked with. 🤭

I absolutely love how she built up the secondary characters to create such depth in the story. I was sobbing for Rachel and Deklin.

This story felt like a blending of the wild swans, swan lake and goose girl meet a bridal competition.

A m/f fairytale retelling with magic, court intrigue, bridal competition, hidden identities and a happily ever after.

Sleeping Beauty meets The Wild Swans in this fresh twist on the classics. While a few moments wrapped up a bit too easily, and some early details never quite circled back the way I expected, plenty of the story kept me guessing.

I was especially intrigued by the way the biblical tale of Gideon was woven into the ending—such an unexpected choice, and now I need to know how that whole battle actually played out. Maybe someday we’ll get a book from Arrow’s POV (preferably with a lot more of his backstory).

Overall, I closed the book satisfied, but also curious—there were definitely hints that more stories are waiting in the wings.

A stunning retelling of the wild swans story! I enjoyed the added undercover prince aspect, and the courage the main character displayed. The faith aspect was beautifully done and gently woven. Mendoza created scenarios with pompous aristocratic brats and down earth high society members interacting with modest and strong hearted people, unafraid to reveal truth and fight for those they love. There will be moments of fear, frustration, swooning, and heartwarming faith. It is a "clean" yearning romance with life altering stakes. One for the reread shelf for sure! Also, there's word of an audiobook coming soon ;)

This was an amazing retelling of The Six Swans mixed with a plethora of other fairytales and biblical stories! There were hints of Robin Hood and Aladdin, as well as Christ, Queen Esther, and Gideon and his army. Christian themes were prevalent throughout the story and there was plenty of adventure and character growth! The romance was clean, and even though there was a lot of violence, it was balanced by the teachings of peace and forgiveness. I love how all of the stories and characters were woven together with symbolism and grace! I received an ARC copy and this is my review.

Ali is a very lovable MC, even after being cursed we see the strength she has. Prince Cal just wants a chance to choose his bride and not have her chosen by his parents. That is what leaves him to disguise himself as a servant during the competition. This is the first book by Ashley that I have read. She has an entertaining way of telling the story and keeping the reader engaged. There were some sweet moments mixed in with heart pounding moments that kept me enchanted as I could hardly wait to see what would happen.

Silenced Beauty was an intriguing and creative take of the Wild Swans. There were many creative spins and Biblical references woven in the story that pulled me in. The world building was well done. I loved both Alianna and Calix. Ali’s resilience and determination was inspiring. Val was so thoughtful towards her. Their relationship was sweet and well done. I loved the build up and tension between the too. The romance was kisses only. There are a few minor characters I am hoping will get their own story like Bevan, Yasmine, and Henry. I would also love Arrow’s story as well! This was a well done story and recommend!

I volunteered to read an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.

so sweet 🩷

I absolutely ate this book up. One sitting. Cal and Ali were so cute and I loved the focus put on his falling in love with her personality and incredible character traits instead of just her outward beauty even though she is stunning as well. I love the positive family relationship she has with her eleven brothers. That microtrope is one of my absolute favorites 🩷🩷 all I can say is well done and I absolutely loved it

I really loved this retelling, from beginning to end. Each trial faced by the characters kept me constantly wondering if they will make it through. I loved this book! Calix and Alianna have such a sweet relationship, and watching him teach her sign language was endearingly tender.
This was a Wild Swans retelling, but unlike the original she does not marry one of her brothers sigh of relief instead she marries the wonderful Prince.
With just a touch of magic, it felt almost realistic, and really sucked you into the story.

I received an ARC copy. I stayed up super late reading it. Take that as proof of my love! All thoughts and opinions are my own!

I had not heard of the fairy tale this story is based off of. So strictly off the storyline and adventure, I thoroughly enjoyed following the FMC path and watching her grow. Seeing the grasp to scripture and keeping faith was so well written for the both the FMC and MMC. Definitely a book I say get those women in your life that are looking for a new author and something to soothe their soul.

Interesting twist on the wild swan retelling

Cal was about to have his wife chosen for him by his parents but wanted a say in it so disguised himself as a servant. Ali had a vision and tried to warn the Royals but got herself cursed. I loved her determination, her kindness, her standing up for truth and the true God.
