"That’s My Goat!" and Other Missionary Misadventures, Miracles, and Missionary Life in West Africa by Joe Consford
What happens when a Texas missionary family trades small-town life for the unpredictable, often chaotic, but always unforgettable world of West Africa?
You get snake-filled garages, surprise weddings, near-death escapes, and enough cultural misunderstandings to keep you laughing and wide-eyed until the last page.
In "That’s My Goat!" and Other Missionary Stories, Joseph Consford invites you into the real-life adventures he and his family experienced while serving in Ivory Coast and Ghana. These are not polished travel brochures; they are honest, funny, and sometimes dangerous tales of faith, friendship, and God’s grace in the middle of the unexpected.
From dodging bandits and battling black mambas to sharing the gospel with village kings, each story captures the beauty, humor, and challenges of missionary life. Woven throughout are moments of deep spiritual truth, reminders that God’s protection and provision are just as real today as they were in Bible times.
Whether you are a missionary, a churchgoer, or simply someone who loves a good adventure, this book will make you laugh, gasp, and maybe even tear up. Above all, it will leave you encouraged to trust God, no matter where He sends you.
Inside you will
True missionary stories from over a decade in West Africa
Cultural surprises, close calls, and lessons learned the hard way
Humor and heart woven into every chapter
A renewed appreciation for God’s presence in the middle of life’s chaos
If you have ever wondered what missionary life is really like, or you just need a fresh reminder that God shows up in the most unlikely places, this book is for you.
I know the author personally, our church supported his family while they were missionaries in Africa. God used them in a mighty way to see much fruit with the gospel. They told the African people about Jesus, saw souls saved and churches started. I thoroughly enjoyed every story in this book and you will too.
This is my own book and enjoyed living these stories (most of them) and I am thankful that God gave me an oportunity to live through them. I hope you enjoy the book and that you are encouraged to do more for our Lord!
This book was fantastic. Be prepared to laugh, cry and be completely shocked that missionaries are bada*****. My favorite stories were; the African bride, Muslim on a bicycle, deaf girl and the king, and the taxi ride I will never forget. 5/5 book.
