Something Reckless: A Small Town Single Dad Hockey Romance

Rate this book
Co-parenting with the hottest bachelor in pro hockey?
I never signed up for that!
But once Easton Raines discovers the nine-year-old secret I’ve been hiding?
Suddenly, we’re playing by a whole new set of rules.

I’ve spent the past nine years picking up the pieces Easton Raines left behind.
When he left home to play professional hockey, I blocked his number, deactivated my social media account, and tried to put our teenage friendship out of my mind.

Still, forgetting him has been impossible.

Because every time I look into my nephew’s face, it’s Easton’s pale blue eyes I see staring back at me.
Life’s not fair, and I’m all too familiar with carrying the world on my shoulders.
Over the years, I’ve become an expert at turning lemons into lemonade, and doing whatever it takes to make ends meet.

Until out of nowhere, Easton suddenly blows back into town.

His one goal is to heal up from the injury that sidelined his high-profile career.
Then, his life can finally get back to normal.

But once he lays eyes on the son he never knew he had?
Ha! There’s no ‘going back to normal’ after that.

Now, Easton is there at every turn.
With his steady shoulder to cry on. His crystalline eyes I keep falling into. And his limitless bank balance, making all of my problems go away.

He says we should go back to being friends—for my nephew’s sake, of course.
But the fire in his stare says he wants to be so much more.
Meanwhile, my body is screaming that this man can have me.
Any damn way he wants me.

It’s completely reckless. I know.
But when his lips claim mine the way they do?
Reckless is exactly what I want to be.

Something Reckless is a steamy, laugh-out-loud, small town, injured hockey player romance.

‘Kay so the MMC fucked the FMC’s twin sister, unknowingly got her pregnant, and now the FMC has been playing mom for almost a decade because the manipulative twin sister didn’t want the child? And all this while the MMC sleeps his way around for years?

EW. One of the easiest DNFs ever.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this, except the key words single dad and hockey, but I have to say, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I will say it was a bit cheesy at times (with expressions like lame-o and gee whiz; who talks like that lol). I really liked the MMC Easton. Such a great guy (with three brothers, who I hope are all getting their own books...). There wasn't as much hockey in this book as I would have liked, but it was still a cute story. Jagger, the little boy, was absolutely adorable.

This is a real slow burn. Really slow burn. But it was worth it in the end. Super cute read.

Reading some of these reviews is so wild to me. Because we’re all about not slut shaming until it’s a man apparently. A big plot of the story isn’t even this man sleeping around (we literally never see him sleep with another girl) so I dont get the hate.. for that particular criticism at least😂

My biggest criticism of the book will forever be hiding a kid from his father for almost 9 years. Then calling yourself selfless. You wouldn’t have to be if you just told the guy he had a kid.. like the fuck???

But also how much she made herself a victim of the situation. Yeah she stepped up when she didn’t have to but she also fucked over an innocent guy. When she ranted to Easton, after turning his life upside down, I would’ve laughed in the bitches face

Moving on.. alba and easton were a fantastic couple when it came down to it. I love their little family & the village they have behind them.

I usually don’t have a favorite chapter but I’d say this was a tie between the girls night & guys night chapters and the county fair chapter. My favorite scene was hands down the scene in the restaurant after the trivia tournament. Jagger’s joke was perfection🥲🫶🏻

To end this off.. Raya can go suck a bag of dicks

Delightful from beginning to end

Cassie-Ann L Miller delivers consistently wonderful books and Something Reckless is right up there. After reading so many complicated books with morally grey heroes, I was more than happy to let her float me away on a cotton candy cloud!

Easton and Alba have secretly pined for each other at since their teens (the prequel to this book is delightful as well) and it’s not a wonder that they instantly enmesh themselves when Easton comes home to heal after a hockey injury.

With Alba’s nephew, Jagger, they become a beautiful found family. I loved the unconventional family angle, loved how their love for each other mattered more than any lies or deception thrown their way. The three of them are unbreakable.

If you need a joy break with minimal angst, this one’s a great book to get your eyes on!

DNF

I just couldn’t finish, the guy sucked so hard. I mean technically he was “nice” but I couldn’t stand him! He slept with his best friends (The fmc) sister and his excuse was “Oh I was a dumb kid back then but I’m an adult now so it doesn’t matter”. Seriously, he says those words so many times in the first 100 pages. like he hasn’t be a playboy all this time, like his brothers are constant calling him that, or wild or partier. He supposedly cares so much about the fmc but he never checked on her for 9 years. With his multimillion dollar bank account he couldn’t find one weekend to visit?! And then it turns out the FMC is a virgin at 27 cause she’s been raising his kid (which again he had with her sister). So she never had chance to experience or have fun. And it’s so obvious this is leaning to a benefits situation and I can’t stand it. The fact that he screwed her sister is not even an issue, they never truly discuss, nor does he explain it. He was just angry, tipsy and she was there. HES the absolute worst! Wh en I find out about the sister, I hoped (since I knew they were twins) it was one of those cases where he thought it was the fmc (probably under the influence) but no. He just recognizes it as a dumb mistake he did cause he was a hormonal kid. And everyone just accepts that. No one seems to think that the guy who fucked his best friends sister (despite claiming to have had feelings for said best friend) is a douche bag. There’s this narration that he’s the best guy, but I’m seriously hoping a car runs over him. That’s all, I’m done

PS: I stopped about half (because the guy was being to presumptuous with his sex offer) and I just couldn’t stand him anymore. But I’m sure the rest of the book was going to be sexing each other up, the usual I want him/i want her but we can’t cause there’s too many reason not too. And there was definitely gonna be drama with the absentee twin and the FMCs ex. Cause he’s showed up one too many times and been hated in a lot for him to just be an extra.

Easton is a pro hockey player who gets injured and goes back to his home town to heal. In the process he reconnects with Alba who was his friend in high school. Who is raising her sister’s little boy, Jagger. But then Easton finds out that Jagger is his. From his one-night stand with Alba’s twin sister Raya. Easton brother insists he get a paternity test done. In the meantime, Easton falls in love with Jagger and Alba. But will the test come back with the out come they all hope for?
Love, love, love, their story!! It had a lot of lies, betrayals and secrets. Alba was such a strong FMC and she didn’t even realize it! Then Easton comes along and inserts himself in their little family and realizes that was exactly what he was looking for. He does everything he can to make Alba and Jagger happy. At the same time, he also tries to take some of the burdens Alba has, off of her shoulders. Then she truly starts to live! Instead of just existing. Even when an unexpected out come occurs. From a situation that her sister causes. They pull it back together and make everything better. Becoming a Strong family unit!

This is the story of Alba and Easton, high school friends who reunite after nine years. Easton is now an NHL player, while Alba is juggling three jobs and raising her nephew, who has been in her care for the past eight years. Her twin sister left him behind to live the carefree life, leaving Alba to step in as his guardian. The bond between Alba and her nephew is heartwarming—until everything changes when Easton discovers the boy is actually his son.

Years ago, Easton had a one-night stand with Raya before leaving town, but he never knew the truth. Raya insists she told him, but as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that both Alba and Easton have been kept in the dark—about the past and about their true feelings for each other.

Cassie-Ann L. Miller delivers a funny, emotional, and spicy romance that hooks you from the start. With twists, turns, and delightful secondary characters—including Easton’s brothers and Alba’s best friend—this is a small-town hockey romance you won’t want to miss.

Easton profesional hockey player was hurt during a game and returns to his home town to heal. Alba was his hometown best friend who ghosted him when he left and they meet again under very funny circumstances. Alba is smart, sweet a caretaker but is buried under the responsabilities of her father and sister’s mistakes. She is struggling through life, with three jobs, taking care of her mother and sweet nephew Jagger. When Easton meets Jagger and learns that he is his son, he becomes obsess to give all he can to the sweet little boy. What Cassie created is the perfect storm for emotions and just enough suspense to question a few things. I love the family that was created out of this mess. An heartwarming, spicy story, a second chance at a future. What’s next for them, I think Alaba’s bff and one of brothers will be ta,ing us on a wild ride!

Oh be still my beating heart! Something Reckless is Alba and Easton’s book and it is such a roller coaster! It’s a story that will hit you all in your feels too!
I so felt for Alba, she stood up to the plate when she needed to and sacrificed so much! But when Easton comes back to town, needless to say emotions are sent into haywire!
The new normal starts and Alba is working herself to the bone! It isnt till Easton does his utmost to care, that she sees she needs support.
Honestly they both fall into an easy friendship and with Jagger being the most important person in their lives, is there a happy ever after for all involved?
Although the tears did fall towards the end I wholeheartedly enjoyed it!

Great Spin on Hockey Dad Trope

This is Cassie-Ann Miller’s first book, and it exceeded my expectations. Initially, I anticipated a typical surprise baby hockey romance, but Easton and Alba’s story is anything but ordinary. Easton is a wonderful MMC with a compassionate heart, while Alba is a strong FMC with the same gentle kindness. Their love and devotion to Jagger are evident from the very beginning. I particularly enjoyed their reunion and the rekindling of their friendship being centered on Jagger before becoming romantic. Their supportive side characters are great, and you can’t help but want to know more about them. It almost makes up for the inclusion of Raya and Chris, almost. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Can’t wait for the rest of this series!

I’m in love with Alba and Easton and the whole Raines family! Goodness, my heart just wanted Alba to succeed in everything she did because she put her life aside for her nephew. The twists in this had me gasping at points thinking I had figured it out but didn’t. It was wonderful when Easton acknowledged his feelings for Alba and also the love he had for his son. He did not shy away from responsibilities either. I am really looking forward to the rest of this series.

New series starts with a bang!

Cassie-Ann Miller had me hooked with the dedication… then she had to make Easton and Alba the couple we should aspire to be… sure there’s issues with communication- when is there not? But they always revolve around Alba’s love for her nephew and ultimately doing what’s best/right for him. I love that we get to know the characters in both past and present settings. The banter between the brothers is great, the Sin Valley Saints references are on point, and the female characters’ relationships are so relatable.

Can’t wait for the next brother! Here’s to a great start of a new series!

A hell of a start

This book was a heck of a start to Miller’s new series and though I finished it seconds ago, I cannot wait for more.

Despite it containing two of my least favorite tropes **spoiler**

(Surprise Virgin heroine/sex teacher)

I devoured every second. Hell, by the time the big “act” came I’d forgotten I was even annoyed about it.

Miller has a way of making you fall in love with her characters in a relatively short time frame. Her characters are real, flawed and every book feels like a slice of life. I honestly cannot wait for more. Especially Lincoln and Jules cuz I have a feeling we’ll be going there soon

Something Reckless by Cassie‑Ann L. Miller is small-town spice meets hockey heat, where a pro hockey player returns home and discovers he’s a secret dad. Cue emotional chaos, electric chemistry, and a heroine who’s been surviving solo for way too long. It’s got slow burn, forced proximity, and heart-melting moments that sneak up on you. Plus, a hero and heroine you can’t help but love, and a villain you love to hate. Packed with humor, heat, and heart, this is the kind of romance that makes you forget the world until you turn the last page.

It really frustrated me how Alba was working herself to the bone to help raise Jagger with her Mums help while her sister lived the high life so I was glad when the truth start to comes out. Nothing is ever simple and there are a lot of emotions to untangle within the is story and just when you think the dust has settled, a new normal and pasts love is mended another twist is revealed. I definitely didn't like Alba's sister to the point when some secrets came out I had to remind myself she isn't real lol

10 STARS!! All the yesses!!

I loved this book so much!

Alba and Easton belong together forever..............and Jagger, too.

Raya, the evil twin, what a c@nt and I don't use that word unless it really applies. This girl thinks of no one but herself and what she put Alba thru the last 8 years....just wow!

Cassie is such a fantastic author, and I cannot wait for more, more, more from those Raines brothers.

A 5 star read

The best thing about Cassie is she never disappoints. I always want her leading males to be my book boyfriend and Easton is definitely on the list.

From the beautiful dedication to the last sentence Easton and Alba’s story had my heart. This story reminds us what truly makes a family with a twist I didn’t see coming.

This is absolutely my favourite love story of the year.

She did it again!

Cassie-Ann L Miller has done it again. I just love her books. There’s a lot of sweet, and whole lot of spicy in the pages. I think we all want to find a guy with the moral compass Easton has, but the capability of being a bit of a Daddy. Alba and Her Little family, minus her a-hole sister and dad, are just human goals. I thoroughly enjoy all of CALM’s books, but this one was just extra sweet.

Alba & Easton
Okay, so the story wasn't bad. It was a second chance/friends-to-lovers with a twist of the mmc finding out he had a kid he didn't know about. Likable characters, some found family, no third act break-up, a big plot twist...but this book was also pretty cringe. The banter and dirty talk between the main love interests made me want to skip over it. If you're gonna write smut, just go all in and do it. If not, save us the weird PG terms like "my channel" etc.

4.5 ⭐️ stars for Alba & Easton♥️🔥♥️. What a tale of longing, love, sadness, jealousy, lies and secrets. And when the truth finally comes out will Easton and Alba be able to find the strength to love each other and Jagger thru it or does the evilness of jealous perpetrators win the battle. Grab this heart wrenching, yet heartwarming, journey of a love that knows no bounds!! Loved it!

High school friends to lovers with a WHOLE LOT in between!! What a great book. You’re introduced to Easton in Play Thing and you fall in love with him in Something Reckless! It helps to read the prelude book before you read this book! It has some twists and turns before these two can be together. LOVE this book!!

cute story

I enjoyed the book but I’ve never read the word “womanhood” more than in this book. In fact, I am absolutely sure that it was in this book more than the number of times I’ve even heard someone reference this word.

Other than that, to book wasn’t too deep. It was cute. Glad I read it. Don’t know that I’ll be reading author’s books.

A family to love

A delightful story of love, family, extended family, heartbreak and right. Easton and Alba struggle to get their lives straight while caring for Jagger whose mother rejected him. The bright side...they have a happily ever after. I recommend this book to all who love human interaction and big love.
Thank you Cassie-Ann L. Miller for a great book.

nope

I loved the Westbrook’s and the Brighton’s series. But this book felt very juvenile. Like a first book an author releases when they don’t know what they are doing. The terminology during the 🌶️ scenes was so cringe! And the first 60% of the books struggles just faded away and the last 30% of the book was like a whole new book.

Such a heartfelt, slow-burn romance with just the right mix of steam, humor, and emotion. I loved watching Easton and Alba reconnect and create a life with Jagger—it was so sweet and heartwarming. A cozy, fun read that’s perfect if you love single-dad or second-chance romance. This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

Tiny Tiger? Mr. Tower? What kind of nicknames are these? So cringe. This book was just not it. The entire story circles around the fact that he slept with her sister once, years ago, when they weren’t even in a relationship. Who cares? It became a never-ending loop of “we shouldn’t” with no real progress.

And that so-called twist at the end? Completely pointless.

Alba and Easton's story was an intensely emotional roller coaster ride that gave my heart a wicked workout. The feelings and emotions in play are huge and lush and I very quickly found myself completely absorbed in this unfolding romance.

I usually read darker books but every now and then I want something lighter and more fun. This book totally filled that bill for me.

Who doesn’t want a hot hockey playing best friend from years ago reconnecting and falling for them!
