Sgt. Windflower loves Christmas and we’re happy to share what he and his family and friends do at Christmastime in Grand Bank or Marystown or Ramea, Newfoundland. Some of the stories feature Windflower and Sheila’s adorable daughters and of course Eddie Tizzard and his family make several spotlight appearances. Other stories take you back to Christmas seasons of any years long past and there’s even a return of a fabulous Newfoundland tradition, the Mummers.
Christmas is a time to celebrate but it is also a time to reminisce and remember. We hope that it will bring back pleasant memories for you and your family to share at Christmas and throughout the year. Come celebrate Christmas in Newfoundland with Sgt. Windflower Mysteries.
CHRISTMAS IN NEWFOUNDLAND 3 I love the Windflower family. I love all the stories about their lives, especially the Christmas ones. I love reading about the girls and getting to know them as they grow. I love seeing more of Winston and Sheila and their relationship with each other and the girls. They are wonderful people, whom you wish you were a part of their inner circle of friends.
WAITING FOR SANTA I really loved WAITING FOR SANTA. I loved reading Stella’s story about the Christmas present she wanted. The story was touching and nearly broke my heart at one point. I loved how Santa interacted with the parents. That was so amazingly wonderful to me. I can’t wait to read more stories in CHRISTMAS IN NEWFOUNDLAND 3.
ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE WOW! Another wonderful story! Winston is reminiscing about the past with his Auntie Marie. The girls are practicing for the Christmas show. The love I feel for this family just keeps on growing. ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE, what a great title for this story.
CHRISTMAS IN PINK LAKE Winston is still reminiscing about his life when he was a little boy. I loved the story about his Grandfather and the stories with his Auntie Marie and all his friends and family growing up, and how they spent their Christmases together. I now know more about who and how Winston became the person he is today and where his big heart came from.
SOME OLD FASHIONED FUN What an interesting story, a group of friends getting together and spending time with each other while entertaining others during the festive season. SOME OLD FASHIONED FUN was another heartfelt story that kept me hanging on just to see what the “mummers” actually did.
CHRISTMAS AT THE MUG-UP CAFE CHRISTMAS AT THE MUG-UP CAFE, another great story added to the collection. I loved how Winston and Sheila stepped up to help their friends, Bert and Moira, when they needed them the most during the holiday. Another heart-warming story.
CHRISTMAS AWAY Corporal Eddie Tizzard and his fiancée, Carrie Evanchuk, are going to visit her family on Christmas in Estevan a City in Saskatchewan, Canada. I loved getting a sneak peek into Eddie and Carrie’s life and getting to know Carrie’s family’s life on their farm.
A MARYSTOWN CHRISTMAS A MARYSTOWN CHRISTMAS turned out to be a really nice story. The more I read, the more I liked it, and by the end, I was in love with it. It is a story about Eddie, Carrie, and their baby, Hughie, and a nice man Eddie meets, and Santa, of course.
A CHILLY CHRISTMAS A CHILLY CHRISTMAS was another heart-warming story about how Winston and others came together to prepare a Christmas dinner and gifts for others, and deliver it to those who couldn’t get out.
A GREEN CHRISTMAS A GREEN CHRISTMAS turned out to be a really nice Christmas for the girls, Stella and Amelia Louise, who loved it very much. I loved how Winston and Grampa Herb talked to the girls and answered their questions about why there was no snow.
THE CHRISTMAS ANGELS Another great story about how Winston made Christmas special for their girls, Amelia Louise, Stella, and everyone on their street by making the girls' wishes come true for this Christmas. I love how much Winston loves his girls and all the things he is willing to do to make them happy.
A CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE A CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE is a story about Winston and Gupta visiting the old folks around town on Christmas, just spending time with them and talking with them about the good old days. When they visited Jarge Skinner, a good friend of Winston’s late Uncle Frank, no one was home, and that was not like Jarge at all; he was always home. After asking around, they find that Jarge is not the only one missing. Winston and the whole town are looking for Jarge and his friends. Where are they? What happened to them?
A CHRISTMAS WISH Richard and his old dog Rusty were sitting by the fire while Richard was thinking about his life as a little boy with his family at Christmas time. Richard was alone now; his children were all grown up with families of their own. Richard is missing his wife and son, both of whom had passed on many years ago.
Another amazing group of joyful and thoughtful Sg. Windflower Christmas stories from Mike Martin. Whether it’s the secret and focused yearnings of his older daughter Stella who has re discovered her ability to skate (I felt her sadness and love when she dreams of her dead mother skating with her); or Christmas at Grand Bank looking after the families who are currently pushed to the edge, it is all so uplifting. Windflower’s smoking ceremony to connect him to his ancestors, his dreams, and his use of the pipe left to him by his Auntie Marie of course play a part. We go back to his Cree boyhood in Pink Lake, Alberta. Windflower remembers. He is appreciative of his beginnings and where he is now. A ray of sunshine on his cheek is like a benediction from his crossed over grandfather. So many stories, so much love to be read and enjoyed! The cover deserves a special mention—whimsical, joyous and colorful—a tribute to this time of year.
An Ottawa Press ARC Many thanks to the author and publisher.
Mike Martin is such a talented, versatile author. Children’s stories, poetry, and of course the long-running, always excellent Sgt. Windflower Mysteries series set in Grand Bank and Marystown, Newfoundland. Christmas in Newfoundland 3, Sgt. Windflower Holiday Tales, like its predecessors Christmas in Newfoundland 1 & 2, is a bonus, a chance to spend time with Winston Windflower and his family and friends and to enjoy the holiday season with them without much mystery or crime or intrigue or suspense. It’s just a feel-good way to spend an afternoon or a few evenings being part of happy times with happy people.
Christmas in Newfoundland 3 is a collection of a dozen stories, all capturing the holiday spirit. They span time from when Winston and Sheila were newly together to the present, where their daughters are growing up, taking part in the Christmas Play, learning more and more to be good neighbors and good citizens. Family, friends and co-workers play a part, some old, some new, some still present, some who have departed. There is time spent with daughters Stella and Amelia Louise, pets Lady and Mollie, owners of The Mug-Up Café Herb and Moira Stoodley, purveyors of the famous pea soup and por’ cakes, Uncle Frank and Auntie Marie, Eddie Tizzard and Carrie Evanchuk and a look back at when their relationship was new, Eddie’s sisters and his father Richard, Dr. Vijay and Repa Sanjay, Betsy Molloy, Constable Samira Gupta and many more of Winston and Sheila’s large, loving circle.
Old Christmas traditions are honored, new traditions are made, and childhood memories and stories are shared. Holiday spirit and generosity are high, with celebrations, decorations, parades and other special events with joyful children and of course remembering those less fortunate.
As always, the environment and the outdoors play a large part, as do Windflower’s dreams and smudging rituals. And it wouldn’t be a Mike Martin story if you didn’t feel hungry after reading it. In addition to the pea soup and por’ cakes a lot of cooking and baking goes on, and there’s always room for a rich mug of hot chocolate.
Christmas in Newfoundland 3 is delightful, a joy to read, a great start to your holiday reading. It’s both a nostalgic trip down memory lane and a look at change, written with Martin’s usual wit and humor and respect for the past and present, his characters and the environment. And you will especially love the story about Winston’s experience with the Mummers! I received an advance copy of Christmas in Newfoundland 3 from the author. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
If Christmas had a heartbeat, it might sound like the gentle rhythm of Sgt. Windflower’s footsteps through the snowy streets of Grand Bank. In Christmas in Newfoundland 3: Sgt. Windflower Holiday Tales, Mike Martin once again invites readers into a world where celebration and reflection walk hand in hand.
This third volume in the beloved holiday collection is more than a festive read—it’s a heartfelt tribute to memory, tradition, and the quiet joys of community. Sgt. Windflower, ever the thoughtful observer, brings his signature warmth and gentle wisdom to stories that honour the spirit of the season. Whether he’s sharing a meal, walking through a winter storm, or simply pausing to remember, Windflower reminds us that Christmas is not just about lights and gifts—it’s about connection.
Martin’s storytelling is rich with Newfoundland charm, blending the crisp air of the Atlantic with the cozy glow of family gatherings. Readers familiar with Volumes 1 and 2 will find this latest installment just as evocative, with tales that stir nostalgia and inspire new traditions.
For those who cherish the quieter side of the holidays—the flicker of candlelight, the scent of spruce, the sound of laughter echoing through a kitchen—Christmas in Newfoundland 3 is a perfect companion. It’s a book to read by the fire, to share with loved ones, and to return to year after year.
Whether you’re new to Sgt. Windflower or a longtime fan, this collection offers a gentle reminder: Christmas is a time to celebrate, yes—but also to remember. And in remembering, we find the heart of the season.
Christmas in Newfoundland 3 is the latest book of holiday takes by Mike Martin.
I can't say enough about how lovely this series is, and to have a new book with 12 Christmas short stories is perfect for getting into the Christmas season and holiday spirit. We feel Christmas is a long way off, but in reality it is a lot closer than we think.
Each story is centered around Sgt. Windflower and/or his friends in Grand Bank Newfoundland. The stories are the right length to read while I enjoy my version of pea soup for lunch.. Pea soup and por cakes are the Saturday favourite of the Windflower family at the Mug Up.
Tibb's Eve is quite the tradition in Newfoundland and a few of the stories share how it is celebrated by the men of the town. It is celebrated on the day before Christmas Eve but Sheila (Windflower's wife) says it is just an excuse for the men to get together and share drinks!
And then there are the Mummers. Are they the grown up version of Hallowe'en dressing up? Mummers go from house to house to share their songs and stories and of course receive a drink and delicious snack as well. Windflower is uncertain about participating but eventually takes part, and really enjoys himself.
There are stories about Amelia Louise and Stella as they anticipate Christmas. And don't forget Lady and Molly, Winston's dog and cat. I love animals and having them in the various stories show how important they are in the Windflower family.
I'm sure reading these stories will bring back wonderful memories of Christmas's past for you. These books are a must for your library and make wonderful gifts for the book lover on yur Christmas list.
Christmas in Newfoundland 3 by Mike Martin is a book with short stories pertaining to the characters from his Sgt. Windflower Mystery series and Christmas. This is the third book of Christmas short stories, and it really allows readers a chance to get to know the characters without a murder to solve.
Christmas in Newfoundland 3 consists of 12 stories, most of them in Windflower's voice but it also allows you to get to know Eddie Tizzard, his family and father, the Mug-Up Cafe where everyone hangs out, Windflower and Eddie's dad when they were younger, and even a story when they had a green Christmas. It's weird because when you read the Sgt. Windflower Mystery series, it is either raining or snowing in the stories.
While I was reading this book, I thought I had my favorite story picked out .... until I started reading the next one. However, if I had to pick my favorite, I think I would choose Christmas Away. In this story Eddie Tizzard is going to his fiancé Carrie's family home to meet her parents and ask her father for his blessing on them getting married. In this story you are focusing on Eddie and Carrie and get to know them a little deeper. But again, it was very hard to pick and that is only by a small margin.
Christmas in Newfoundland 3 allows readers to take a break from shopping, cooking and partying with friends and family and sit down for a few minutes with a snack and treat and read for a few minutes. You can read a story then get right back to celebrating ... or read another one. There is no wrong way to read it. Enjoy !!!
Christmas in Newfoundland 3: Sgt. Windflower Holiday Tales by Mike Martin features heartwarming tales of Christmases in the eastern province of Canada that will tug at your heartstrings. The stories revolve not only around our favourite Mountie, Sgt. Windflower, giving us a peek into the Christmas traditions he and his family hold dear, but also around other characters in the Sgt. Windflower Mysteries that we have come to enjoy as well. Eddie Tizzard and his family are the focus of a few stories, providing a look at east coast Christmas traditions, as well as western traditions via a trip to the prairies, and a particularly sweet story about a local Santa Claus. One story provides a fascinating look at the Newfoundland tradition of the Mummers, and more than one tale revolves, in true Canadian fashion, around the weather. As usual, Martin both entertains and educates in this third holiday collection, and the book is perfect for reading over the holidays, when the activities of your own holidays might only allow you to read in fits and starts. Such is the joy of the holiday tales. And that cover! Isn't it lovely? It's like a gift of its own. Thank you to the author for the ARC of the book.
‘These are gifts for our allies. Nuts for the squirrels and chipmunks…’ – Memorable tales
Canadian author Mike Martin, born in Newfoundland, is a well known freelance writer and his articles and essays have appeared in newspapers, magazines and online across Canada as well as in the United States and New Zealand. His books include Change the Things You Can: Dealing with Difficult People as well as his ongoing series The Sgt. Windflower Mystery Series which includes the Sgt. Windflower Holiday Tales of which CHRISTMAS IN NEWFOUNDLAND is the 3rd volume. He lives and works in Ottawa, Ontario.
Sgt Winston Windflower is with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a taste of Martin’s memorable writing follows; ‘It was a cool, brisk morning as Winston Windflower walked along the empty beach in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. He could tell from the dampness of the breeze that snow was coming. That wasn’t a bad thing. Christmas was just a few days away, and he and his little family loved snow at Christmas…’ This warmly created character pervades this visit to Newfoundland at Christmastime, and reading this series of stories invites discovery of traditions and concepts that enhance our appreciation of Christmas. A fine preparation for the season!
In Christmas in Newfoundland 3, Mike Martin delivers 12 new vignettes of Christmas time for Winston Windflower, his wife and children, Lady the dog and Molly the cat, his dear neighbours and those family members who have gone ahead.
As with every Windflower novel and short story, family is paramount - whether the family you're born into or the family you choose. If you love heartwarming short stories of Christmas in small-town Newfoundland, or tales of Winston's youthful Christmases on the reservation, these 12 stories will bring a smile to your face and maybe a little tear to your eye; but they always entertain and engage.
There are dreams, there are celebrations, there are mummings (if you don't know, just ask), there are all kinds of presents and many surprises. I cannot recommend this one enough.
A marvellous novel I loved watching Christmas films as well as reading books about this magical time. This time, I continued with the series written by Mike Martin, “Christmas in Newfoundland 3”. The tales take readers to incredible adventures that show friendship, love, hope and community spirit during this magical moment of the year. It shows how people from this land celebrate Christmas and the experiences they have during this time. What I liked about this book is that some of the activities the characters do are similar to the way I celebrate Christmas with my family. It’s a captivating tale with new ideas to apply during this time. I highly recommend it.
I needed something to help me get into the Christmas spirit, and a visit to Grand Bank and Sergeant Winston Windflower's world was just what the doctor ordered. This collection of Christmas stories is mostly contemporary, but harken to a simpler time and a slower pace of life. We get to know many of our old friends a little better, and meet a couple of new ones. There are a couple of things that I don't think are entirely consistent with the previous books in the series (or even with other stories in this same book), but I'm going to ignore those and just bask in the warm fuzzy feelings this book gives me.
It is quite an adventure story, a good Christmas read. I couldn't really figure out which age group it would be suitable for. There is something that says "an excuse to go drinking," I guess not a children's book. It has a lovely artwork on the cover. I like that. The story is quite heart-warming and would fit into a holiday Hallmark movie or series if we were to adapt all three books. Sheila is a great character who reminds me a lot of my grandmother, and she sounds exactly like her, too. Windflower is such a great character someone you would love to hang out with, I bet he has some amazing fascinating stories to share.
Christmas is always a time of magic and reunions, but it is also a time to reflect, look inward, and think about those who no longer share the table with us. This book is a wonderful invitation to look at all the facets of this beautiful celebration. We often get lost in the minutiae of this night, and we don't stop to think that what really matters is sharing with those we love. It is a short book, so you can enjoy it at any time, and it is suitable for any type of reader. The cover undoubtedly catches everyone's eye, and it's impossible not to want to take a look at its contents.
I'm a fan of this series as it's well plotted, hearwarming, featuring excellent developed characters and solid plots. The festive atmosphere is cheery, the setting lovely and fascinating. Want to read the next soon Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this digital copy, all opinions are mine
Christmas in Newfoundland is Book 3 in A Sgt. Windflower Christmas Mystery by Mike Martin. I enjoy holiday stories. Christmas is a magical time of the year. Sgt. Windflower along with his family are celebrating and creating traditions… of course, there just might be a mystery to solve. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Christmas in Newfoundland is the third book in this series of holiday books that share Christmas traditions for the families in the author’s Winston Windflower series.
It is full of all the precious times that the family of Windflower and his friends and their families celebrate at this special time of year. The author shared the different customs that these characters continue to celebrate each Christmas such as cutting down a tree to decorate, baking special pies, cookies and other sweets, inviting friends to join in the celebration and even going from house to house in costumes called mummering.
This is a book that takes the reader back in time to their own holiday celebrations and the love of family and friends and also by sharing good times with those who are less fortunate. It is a heartfelt and warm feeling to read this book and the others in this series. I felt as if I was with the characters and celebrating too.
The author’s warmth and caring manner is deeply seated in his community and the characters in his books. It is most evident in the way he writes his stories with these beloved characters that are so real and unforgettable. I love his books and Winston Windflower’s character.
I highly recommend all Mike Martin’s books to those who enjoy reading books with heartwarming stories.
