She's not one for spontaneous jaunts, and she hoards her savings for her future in New York. But when a DNA test reveals a genetic heritage her mother has kept from her, she feels a pull that's bigger than her goals, and quite possibly her budget.

Along with her best friend Mia and a "chaperone", Mia's college freshman brother—Kendall's nemesis—they're off on an unsanctioned road trip to meet Kendall's newly discovered half-brother. Kendall soon learns that sudden siblinghood is not as easy as she had imagined, but when a clue leads to another half-sibling on Instagram, the bend in the road on Route 66 leads them to Bend, Oregon. Here Kendall finds a sister with whom she shares a smile and a sense of wit. And from her, Kendall learns the identity of her father—but she must drive a thousand miles in two days to confront him or miss her chance completely.

Full of cinematic moments and unexpected detours, fights with her best friend and sparks with her best friend's brother, each stop brings new possibilities but also new pressures. And when Kendall unearths a family secret she never saw coming, she discovers that while map apps may work on terrain, they are far less reliable for the geography of the heart.

Entertaining, G-rated, family-drama, road-trip, YA novel

When 16-year-old junior, Kendall Barrows, completes a DNA test to try to find out information about her unknown father, she is stunned to discover he was a sperm donor, and she has three potential siblings. Her never-married mother is furious when Kendall confronts her with what she has learned, and she refuses to discuss the situation with Kendall.

Kendall is determined to seek out her biological roots. She comes up with the idea of driving from her home in a small town in Colorado to Arizona and California to meet her siblings, and potentially her bio-dad. Kendall, who does not have a car of her own, plans to make the trip in the car of her BFF of the past 10 years, Mia Sandoval. Her mother is going to be on a business trip for a full week, and because her mother is being so uncooperative about Mia's legitimate desire to understand her biological origins, she lies to her mother and tells her that she and Mia are going to go stay with Mia's grandmother. On the planned day of departure, Kendall is shocked when Mia shows up in a new Jeep that belongs to her 18-year-old, college-freshman brother, Gabe. He announces that he will be driving them because he doesn't want them taking off on their own under any circumstances, but especially in Mia's old, unreliable car. Kendall is unhappy about this situation, because she has had nothing to do with Gabe for the past two years, since the night, at age 14, while she was drunk at a party, that she confessed to Gabe the major crush she had had on him for the previous two years, and he harshly rejected her.

There is lots of family drama in this story based on the fact that Kendall's mother has not been honest with her about her conception. Similar to adult women's fiction, this YA novel focuses more on female bonds than romance. The romantic subplot betweeen Kendall and Gabe functions the way romance does in women's fiction, as a kind of reward for good behavior after the FMC goes through a significant psychological growth arc.

This is a G-rated novel suitable for all ages, as is the case for the adult women's fiction written by this author. Every psychological plot thread is neatly tied up, in service of the creation of an overarching HEA that focuses primarily on Kendall's four significant female relationships, which are central to this novel. There is also an HFN in for the romance plot.

This novel is available through Kindle Unlimited. It is not available through Hoopla.

“The wind pours in again, and the braid holds. But the rest of me has fallen apart.”

It’s always the biggest treat when a beloved author branches out to a new genre and this YA adventure, with a dash of crush and romance, is so much fun.

Kendall has grown up without a dad and decides to do a DNA test, which leads to unexpected results, a search for family, and a secret road trip for answers. Mia, her bestie, and Mia’s older brother, Gabe (aka former crush), join the trek and it was full of interesting discoveries, mild flirtations, and a lot of self-discovery.

I loved how realistic the teens were written and although I would want to ground my own kids for pulling something like this into eternity, I really enjoyed their journey on all the emotional and physical levels. It was like traveling right along with them and brought back some of my own angst and feelings from my own teen years.

Lanie Jacobs is someone to watch in the YA genre and I loved my time spent within these pages.

Content: mild language; mild romance; talk of teen drinking and sperm donors

I definitely would have enjoyed this book more when I was younger, but I still liked it! It’s such a fun story and perfect for older teens! I wouldn’t really want younger teens reading it because of certain parts (see my content note below). Lanie did such a great job at writing an accurate representation of the teenage years. As she said, being a teenager is messy, so these are definitely not perfect humans. I love that rather than trying to write then as they should be, she simply wrote them as they are 🩷

What pieces are we made from and what really is family? This was what Kendall Barrows was setting out to discover in this story of love, family, and friends. After taking a DNA test and discovering that not all is as it seems, Kendall is ready to discover the truth once and for all. So she sets off with her best friend, Mia, and a “chaperone” aka Mia’s college freshman brother—Kendall’s nemesis—on an unsanctioned road trip to find her family. Along the way, new siblings are met, fights break out between friends, and there are sparks with a certain best friend’s brother. Kendall begins to learn in depth that the heart can be a hard thing to comprehend, but ultimately, she learns what family truly looks like.

I vividly remember all of the hormones and wild emotions I dealt with during my teenage years so I felt like I could somewhat understand the emotions Kendall was feeling, especially her feelings for Gabe. Having had my fair share of crushes growing up, I well remember all of the wild feelings that accompany them. I really appreciate the way Lanie wrote Kendall and Gabe’s relationship!

Top Moments:

🏔️ Meeting Seth
🏔️ Cheep Beer Creeper
🏔️ French braiding Kendall’s hair
🏔️ Admiring trees
🏔️ Meeting Leila
🏔️ Couch surfing
🏔️ Reconciled relationships

Content Note:
- mentions a character having two moms
- mentions underage drinking

Romance, sweet, contemporary, Y/A;
Kendall, Mia, Gabe Sandoval
Kendall decides to do a DNA test to find her father. Raised by a single mother, she wants to find the other parts of her that aren't like her mom, and decides it would make a good college essay. Without her mom's knowledge she sends the kit in, and finds a sibling, located a good drive away. Her mom is headed on a town, and Kendall decides a spring break road trip to find this half brother might be a good thing, maybe get her closer to finding out who her father is and find the missing parts of herself.
Heading out on a road trip with her best friend Mia, Mia's brother (oh, so hard with a kiss and rejection in their past), and hope in her heart, Kendall and her friend and brother make memories, open up some secrets for them all, and Gabe and Kendall revisit the past to find something more.

Lovely, rich, moving story, finding the true meaning of family, friends honest with each other, and finally a story for Kendall and Gabe. Lovely HEA and a finding family of many kinds. LJ (MJ) always builds a compelling story, heartfelt emotions, and sweet, romance. Moving, honest, and most importantly, a building story that shows the character and emotional development of the characters always highly recommend this author. (Y/A pen name)

Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Media for providing me with an ARC audiobook of All Over the Map in exchange for an honest review. ⭐

I really enjoyed the concept of this story, the whole road trip premise is super cute and full of coming-of-age vibes! I absolutely loved how chill all the siblings are throughout the book, and their dynamic felt so natural and heartwarming. Their bond made the journey feel real and relatable, like you were right there in the car with them.

That said, the tone leaned a little too YA for my personal taste, but I can definitely see younger readers or fans of light-hearted stories loving it. It’s fluffy, fun, and easy to listen to, the perfect audiobook when you just want to relax and enjoy the ride. It actually reminded me a lot of Paper Towns by John Green, which gave it a nice sense of nostalgia.

GENRE
-YA contemporary with a hint of romance

CONTENT
-🤬: mild language (6 d, 2h), some crude language/gestures
-❤️: kisses (with tongue mentioned)
-⚠️: mentions of one night stands/sperm donors/two moms, underage drinking (past)

This is (Me)Lanie Jacobs(on)'s YA debut novel! It's single POV and felt to me more of Kendall's story than a YA romance. There is a subplot of romance but the main story is on Kendall discovering pieces of herself.

Kendall grew up with just her mom. After taking a DNA test, she realizes that she has half-siblings. Her mother refuses to tell her anything about the male who contributed to her DNA. Because Kendall can't get answers from her, she reaches out the half-siblings and takes a spontaneous road trip. Her mom believes that she's going to her best friend, Mia's, grandma's house...but they are going to meet up with her new-found relatives. It's supposed to be just Mia and Kendall on the trip, but Mia's older brother, Gabe, insists on coming along...or he's telling the parents.

While you do learn about Kendall and Gabe's history and you do see some more feelings develop during their trip, the main focus is on Kendall discovering things about herself that she has in common with her half-siblings. I loved the message that family is not just blood, but it's chosen and it's the people who show up for you.

I didn't love the language. I'm positive that teenagers hear worse at school BUT as a teenager and as an adult, I didn't and don't speak that way. So I don't think it's unrealistic to not have any swearing in a book; it mirrors my real life.

I was so excited to read the YA debut of an author I’ve read for years and years. I was not disappointed. This is a great story. Kendall is an only child twisted by a single mom who always said she was the product of a one night stand. Kendall wants more answers than Mom is giving. A DNA test is taken, some internet sleuthing, and a road trip ensues. Kendall takes with her her best friend, Mia, and Mia’s brother, Gabe tag along. Who Kendall secretly had a crush on previously (yes, there’s history there).

The reader gets a book full of found family, best friend’s brother, friendships and real emotions. Teenagers who are also real with how they behave and react. I surprised by many characters in this book and some I didn’t see coming. I loved when Kendall had her moments of revelations that lead to an excellent ending.

I received an eARC from the author. All views are my own.

-I give 4 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~The off-limits best friend’s brother trope gets the road trip treatment…

“Friendship is messy.”

-ALL OVER THE MAP, is the first YA novel from USA Today bestseller Melanie Jacobson under her pen name, Lanie Jacolos. This story will you definitely take you on an adventure, as characters will take a road trip and on a rollercoaster with all the feels. On the way this story will hook you in with cinematic moments and unexpected detours, fights with a best friend and sparks with a best friend’s brother. Each stop along the way brings new possibilities but also new pressures. But there is humor amid all the feels and hiccups of drama. Weaved within this story, are beautiful themes of appreciating what you do have, the importance of friendship, family, self-discovery, and identity. This story is from Kendall’s perspective and focuses on her journey, her great desire, and processing of what she wants to learn about herself from her DNA. Watching her along the way process and realize that family is who made you, but also who you choose, which is both tender and sweet. I loved seeing the growth, the honesty, the forgiveness, and healing take place in this story, which leads to a satisfying ending. This is a lighthearted story that addresses real life struggles in a positive and original way. 📚😊

“Family really is everything.”

-Content: some mild language, some kisses (with tongue mentioned), mentions of one night stands/sperm donors/two moms, underage drinking (past), cannabis farm, deee struck by a car (non-graphic)

“I really do have everything.“

“Siblings are mostly the worst except for when they’re not.”

I liked this book a lot! It’s YA, and there is a lot of teenage drama and angst, but that’s one reason why it’s fun to read. Sometimes, I’m just in the mood for that! I loved the story of Kendall taking a DNA test to see if she had any family out in the world, and then taking off on a road trip with friends to meet them. There were a lot of funny parts amidst the drama, and I laughed out loud several times!

Kendall, a meticulous high school junior with her sights firmly set on NYU, is thrown for a loop when a DNA test reveals she has half-siblings. Suddenly, her carefully constructed world is shaken, and she finds herself on an unauthorized road trip with her best friend Mia and Mia's brother Gabe, who's the bane of Kendall's existence, as their reluctant chaperone. What starts as a mission to meet a half-brother turns into a much bigger journey as more surprises are revealed, including a half-sister, a long-lost father, and truths she wasn’t prepared to face.

I don't read YA very often but what I liked best about this book is its heart. It’s not just about Kendall finding new family members, but about who she is apart from the path she's laid out for herself. I loved that she had an instant connection with her half-sister Leila, especially after the meeting with her half-brother didn't go as well as she'd hoped. I liked that Kendall's changing relationship with Mia’s brother was a subplot that enhanced the story and didn't become the main focus.

One of my favorite things in this story is Kendall's preconceived notions about what makes a family were challenged when the children of her mother's boyfriend showed up to help them out. Family isn't always people we're related to by blood, a lot of times it's people we've chosen to make a part of our family.

I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

Content: some mild swears, mentions of a one-night stand/sperm donors, and underage drinking that happened previously.

3.5⭐

I went into this story blind, and listened to the audiobook. I enjoy the occasional YA, especially when I'm looking for something with more plot and less spice - and this one is definitely a proper YA family friendly read.

It follows Kendall who discovers she has half siblings after doing a DNA test, and ropes her best friend, and best friend's older brother, into joining her on a sibling meeting road trip across America. They have some fun road trip times, a couple small disasters, good character growth, and some witty banter throughout.

Unfortunately the actual content was a little too young for me. I just didn't really care about any of the characters, or their petulant teenage worries. Saying that, teenage me probably would have gobbled this up and re-read it a few times.

Many thanks to the Author, Publisher, and NetGalley for the ALC!

I just finished reading this YA novel and loved it!! Kendal is a typical teen with moments of sweet and moments of salty. She is strong willed and determined and sometimes gets in over her head. I loved her friendship with her bestie Mia and, of course, the sparks between Kendall and Gabe!

Kendall has been raised by her single mom her entire life. Now, at the age of 17, she has a desire to know more: who her father is and if she has inherited any of his traits, if she has any siblings, and any other information she can get her hands on. This need takes her on a road trip with Mia and Gabe, and while she does find some answers to her questions, she learns some valuable lessons along the way and finds out the true meaning of family. 🥰

This is a Young Adult kisses only book by veteran author Melanie Jacobson under her pen name of Lanie Jacobs. I have loved many of Melanie's contemporary romcoms and when given the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this YA offering, I jumped at that chance!

Now I will state that I have not read an abundance of YA books, but I have read a few. This one has a romance aspect, but as I feel should be the case in the YA genre, that isn't the main story of the book.

It was actually the main plot that kept my attention most. The idea of Kendall trying to find her roots and family was intriguing to me. I am sort of fascinated by these events in real life, so reading about this journey was extra fun. There's also a road trip or two or three....well you get the idea...if you didn't already have that from the cover graphic.

I do not have children and don't really know what is appropriate reading for different ages. As far as content, the author does give a content/trigger message at the beginning of the book. I would read that if you were going to be deciding what age this would be appropriate for. It's basically the discussion of sperm donations. Each family should make that judgement for themselves.

I am very thankful that I was given the opportunity to read this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I really enjoyed Melanie Jacobson’s first YA novel (using the pen name Lanie Jacobs). I found myself very invested in the characters and really rooting for them.

This was written from Kendall’s point of view as she tries to uncover family secrets and find answers about her heritage and what makes her who she is.

I loved the dynamic with her best friend, Mia. She was energetic and witty, with a handful of fun big brothers. When a certain very cute brother joins them on their road trip, things get even more interesting for Kendall.

On the road, Kendall has to navigate being a good friend, getting the answers she’s seeking, keeping her mom placated from a distance, and hiding her long-time crush on her best friend’s brother.

Even though Kendall is frustrated with her mom and lying to her about the road trip, I was glad it came together with good family messages in the end.

As we can always expect from Melanie Jacobson, this story was very well-written with great humor, dialogue, relationships, and romance. The romance is a more of a side-plot and mostly comes into play in the second half, and it is SO ADORABLE and sweet!

If you are like me and love to occasionally dive into cute young adult stories, you’ll want to pick this one up!

✅ My thoughts:
What a fun book to relax with!
I loved the road trip the author takes us on with Kendall, Mia and Gabe.
Some will say the story is too corny, too unrealistic…..well, it may be a bit of all that. But, it is also laugh out loud moments, learning to appreciate what you have, family relationships, sweet romance, friendships and, most importantly, figuring out what really matters.
To sum it up….if you are in the mood for a book that will have you laughing, gasping out loud, getting teary eyed……this would be a perfect read for you.

ALL OVER THE MAP is one of those stories with a motley crew of characters as well as both found and blood family. It's a book that will resonate with readers, especially as most of us are still figuring out who we are and where different traits came from. Great characters, a fun road trip, some drama and a bit of romance make for an enjoyable YA contemporary.

Read this story if you like:
🧭Road trip books
🧭Sweet romance that isn't the focus of the story
🧭Found family
🧭Stories about adoption or children seeking their biological family
🧭Best friends
🧭Plenty of humor
🧭Persian food (yum!)
🧭Romance with a best friend's brother (there's history there)

I have always loved this author's ability to tackle some deep topics in a relatable and humorous way. She does it with this book as she balances the vulnerability, heartache, and frustration the main character feels with some steady friends, romance, connections and laughter. I also felt some admiration for Kendall planning everything out like she did and making happen what was so important to her. She didn't handle everything perfectly, which was realistic, but she did have a pretty good plan, considering. I liked that there was both blood family and found family. Kendall wants what her friend has and has questions about herself that she's hoping to find. She doesn't realize what she has and doesn't see the strong woman she is. Gabe added another complexity to the story along with some pretty bright sparks. I liked that the romance wasn't the center of the story and was a bit messy. Made it feel more authentic. I think my favorite part was some other "family" coming through for Kendall and it totally changed her perspective.

My only complaint is that some of the characters' reactions and drama were over the top and a bit unreasonable. Some of the things said were pretty hurtful and I felt like they were then ignored and avoided before being lightly worked out instead of having the weight they should have. Mia especially felt pretty selfish to me. Also one of my pet peeves is when adults or parents don't tell their kids things that realistically they should which happens a bit in this story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was such a fun read! Great characters, an entertaining plot with all the feels, found family and a sweet romance made for an enjoyable read!

Content: Some references to premarital affairs, but clean.
Source: I received a complimentary copy from the author, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.

This was such a cute read about a teenager who is demanding answers about her biological father. I think that if I were in her shoes, I would have wanted to do the same thing. I loved how supportive her best friend, Mia, was, that she was willing to drive across the country with her to search for these missing pieces in Kendall’s life. The romance between Kendall and Gabe was a lot of fun and reminded me of a time in my life where I had a huge crush on a friend’s brother. The pacing was fast and the chapters were fairly short. Overall, this is a great read for older YA audiences.

Wonderful YA debut from a beloved author!

Kendall has always wanted to know more about her dad, and when a DNA test reveals secrets about her past, she is determined to find answers. She sneaks off on a road trip with her best friend Mia and Mia's older brother Gabe to discover where she came from in hopes of finding the sense of family and kinship she craves.

Kendall's adventure is full of ups and downs as and tries to hide her growing feelings for Gabe and navigate her rocky friendship with Mia, not to mention all the hilarious moments and detours they encounter along the way, but in the end, she learns insightful lessons on the true meaning of family and friendship.

What you'll love:
YA romance
single pov
coming of age
best friend's brother
road trip
search for family
forced proximity
couch surfing
meeting Leila
the pig embryo
friendship and family

Okay, this was adorable and sweet! It was definitely a YA coming of age story with a romance subplot as Kendall's search for answers was the main theme of the story, but I didn't mind at all. I loved her character growth and appreciated the fact that she behaved like an actual teenager - she was stubborn, fiercely independent, kinda self-centered, and wildly emotional. Her choices were not always logical or practical but they were exactly what a teenager would do in those situations.

So much heart and depth in Kendall's journey and in her relationships with others. There were so many tender scenes between her and family, both the one she found and the one she already had - there were definitely some tears shed!

And though not the main focus of the book, the romance between her and Gabe was incredibly sweet. He managed to walk the line between supportive and protective and while their backstory is proof that teen boys can be incredibly dense sometimes, they do eventually grow out of i1!

This was a well-paced, fun story that would be perfect for older teens. I am excited to see where this author's YA journey takes her next! 4.5 stars

Just FYI: This book is filed under the wrong author. This Lanie Jacobs, the author of ALL OVER THE MAP, is actually Melanie Jacobson writing under a pen name. I don't know how to go about fixing this, but I'm sure SOMEONE out there does!

I've read—and enjoyed—a lot of Melanie Jacobson's adult rom-coms, so I was excited to see what she would do with a YA version. Like the author's other books, ALL OVER THE MAP is fun, upbeat, and swoony. It's more than just a love story, though. It's got emotional depth, exploring questions about identity, birth family vs. found family, friendship, and more. Jacobson/Jacobs maintains a nice balance between these more serious issues, the romance between Kendall and Gabe, and the humor and adventure of a secret road trip gone wrong. What results is a quick, funny, heartfelt read that entertains while also providing some valuable food for thought.

Although its plot is a bit far-fetched and contrived in places, my only real complaint with ALL OVER THE MAP is with Kendall. In a novel that has so many warm, wonderful characters, she stands out in a not-so-good way. She's self-centered and so laser-focused on what she wants that she uses people to get her way, is mean to those who don't deserve it, and then gets upset when things don't go as SHE planned. Kendall is sympathetic to a point, but not enough to make her really likable. Even though she does change a little bit over the course of the story, I still found her off-putting. Mia and Gabe are both totally likable—I just didn't get what they saw in a bratty drama queen like Kendall. I still wanted Kendall to get her happy ending, though, even if I didn't like her all that much.

Besides that complaint, I enjoyed ALL OVER THE MAP. I would absolutely hand it to my teen to read. The novel does have a little bit of language (Bible swears), mild innuendo, and some rude humor, but it's a mostly clean read (PG-13 at most). Lovers of Kasie West and Emma Lord are sure to fall for Lanie Jacobs as well.

I don’t usually read many YA romances, but I was super excited to read All Over the Map when I found out it was written by Melanie Jacobson under her new pen name Lanie Jacobs. Well, my excitement was warranted because I adored this book as much as I adore her romcoms.
The story focuses on Kendall Barrows, a high school junior who decides she wants to find out about her father by taking a DNA test. When the DNA test comes back revealing that Kendall had several possible siblings, she embarks on a road trip to meet them and learn more about herself. Her best friend Mia and Mia’s older brother Gabe (their “chaperon”) join Kendall on the journey. The journey is full of ups and downs and nothing goes as planned for Kendall.
Kendall was so angsty and emotional. She was so well written. Teen readers will relate to Kendall on so many levels while adult readers will shake their heads at Kendall’s actions and thoughts. The emotions and angst were so real and gritty that I am so glad that my teenage years are behind me. I don’t want to go through that again.
The supporting characters of Mia and Gabe were fabulous. I loved the dynamic between Mia and Kendall. The friendship, loyalty, love, and blunt honesty between them was so good—I love strong female friendships, especially ones that last through thick and thin! Gabe was so good. I loved how he supported both Mia and Kendall throughout the adventure. There are some scenes between Kendall and Gabe that you just need to read to fully appreciate Gabe. You will know the scenes when you read them. They are so good.
I adored this sweet book. I loved how the story focused on both biological family and found family, and the importance of each in our lives. It was beautifully written.
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is told from Kendall’s point of view

-it is mentioned that Kendall’s mom lied about Kendall’s biological father’s identity & way she was conceived

-there are mentions of children having been conceived through a sperm donor

-it is mentioned (once) that a character has 2 mothers

-there is one use of the ‘d’ part of the full term for d-bag

-there are two mentions of characters flipping another off

-it is briefly mentioned that a kiss included tongue

-there is a brief accident resulting in the death of a deer

-there is a brief & accidental visit to a weed farm

Review:

I’ve loved Melanie Jacobson’s adult romcoms so I was really excited to see what kind of young adult books she’d be releasing as Lanie Jacobs and I was not disappointed!

I loved getting to know Kendall, her best friend, her best friend’s brother, & the various other characters they met along the way. I loved that we know Kendall doesn’t want anything to do with Gabe (her best friend’s brother) but we don’t really know why until later in the story (just getting bits and pieces until the full reveal). I loved seeing Kendall’s friendship with Mia and how they still hits bumps in their friendship as new things were introduced, but ultimately they were going to work things out. And I loved that we were discovering new things about Kendall as Kendall was discovering things about herself and her half-siblings.

Summary:

Kendall has had a plan for her life with each of her steps mapped out down to the littlest details. But when a DNA test reveals that her mother hasn’t been telling her the truth about her own heritage, Kendall decides to take an unexpected road trip to find out more about the side of herself that she thought would remain as vague she’d always known it. Along for the ride, Kendall has her best friend Mia and an unexpected & unwanted chaperone in Mia’s brother Gabe who joined when they tried leaving under his nose.

With all the unexpected feelings and discoveries Kendall makes about her biological father’s side of the family as well as the tension of hate (or maybe unresolved love) between Kendall and Gabe, Kendall is in for a wild ride on her road trip to discovering herself…

Parents to tennagers, I have found a book for them and you !! So this is Melanie Jacobson's YA novel (published in Lanie Jacobs). I think as a teen I would have been completely obsessed with this book!!! I think it's the perfect book for teens, but especially for teens who are:

-adopted

-from single parent homes

- from an unexpected pregnancy

-came from a sperm donor

This book goes on a journey with Kendall, her best friend Mia, and Mia's older brother Gabe. Kendall comes from a home with just her mom, but she has always wondered what parts of her are from her biological dad. Mia is her best friend who has a huge family who she is a part of, but also feels separate. So she decides to take a DNA test and in the process finds some half singlings! So she comes up with a road trip plan that involves Moa, and Gabe crashing.

All Over The Map focuses on Kendall's journey, desire, and processing of what she wants to learn about herself from her DNA. However, in the process she finds out that family is who made you, but also who you choose.

Tropes including: road trip, DNA testing, finding yourself, half siblings, found family, and connections

I think it's a fantastic book, I think it's a great read for any teenager! I think it a great read for parents to give you all something to discuss together!! I would highly encourage you and your teenagers to pick up this book and read it together! ❤️

Writing under the pen name Lanie Jacobs, Melanie Jacobsen gives us her YA debut with a road trip book!

I am such a fan of Melanie’s rom coms, so I was super excited to give this new adventure of hers a go! However, I don’t know if I’m just an old fuddy-duddy or if there is some merit to my slightly cringy feelings here.

I didn’t really find any of the characters likeable. Their choices felt a little far-fetched & their capabilities to pull them off seemed unrealistic to me. I also was really frustrated at the non-communication between mother & daughter. Grr.

Switching gears, I was a little surprised by some of the content ... nothing truly that bad, just, maybe a bit different than what was expected.

So here is some content to consider if you like to preview what your teens are reading … mild language & rude gestures, some kissing (with tongue), mentions of 2 moms / one night stands / sperm donors / underage drinking, a cannabis farm & the smell weed, death of a deer hit by a car & plenty of teen angst, rebellion & poor choices.

I’m not usually this nit picky about things in books, but when it’s labeled YA, I feel that’s a gamechanger & want to make sure parents/guardians are aware of what their young readers are reading.

Having said that, I would approve this for my teen as I'm sure way worse is experienced among the halls at school, but I absolutely would pair the story with an opportunity for discussion & conversation on relatable topics.

A spontaneous road trip. A best friend’s annoying (but infuriatingly cute) brother. A whirlwind of family discoveries. This YA novel delivers all the laughs, feels, and unexpected turns you’d want from an Emma Lord or Julie Buxbaum book. Here’s why it’s a must-read:

🎓 College Dreams & Unexpected Detours – Kendall Barrows has her life meticulously planned—until a DNA test throws a wrench. NYU may be her destination, but first, she has some serious soul-searching.

🚙 The Ultimate Road Trip Vibes – From Route 66 to Bend, Oregon, Kendall’s adventure is full of quirky stops, scenic wonders, and cinematic moments that scream “YA rom-com perfection.”

😡❤️ Enemies (Kind Of?) to Something More – Enter Mia’s older brother—the chaperone Kendall never wanted but maybe needs. The tension is off the charts, and the slow-burn sparks? Delicious.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A Family Puzzle with Big Feels – What starts as a search for one sibling turns into a journey of unexpected connections, secrets, and redefining what family means.

💕 The Swoon Scale 💕
💍 Swoon-Worthy Sparks ✨ (4/5)
💬 The Dialogue 🎭 (4.5/5)
🦋 Butterfly Effect 🥺 (4.5/5)
📖 Re-Readability 🔁 (4/5)

🎉 Final Verdict: All Over the Map is a heartfelt, funny, and deeply satisfying journey about love, family, and finding yourself when you least expect it. You need this book if you love road trips, slow-burn romance, and heartwarming friendships.

Having had an opportunity to read an early version of this book, I was excited to read the final version last week. I don't care if Melanie Jacobson is writing her normal (amazing) rom-coms or trying her hand at YA under a pen name, I'll read it!

Kendall lives alone with just her mother, next door to friend Mia's large family. Kendall is desperate to know more about her "dad," more than the short uninformative story her mom has told for her whole life, so finally she sends of for a DNA test. When the test results come she is surprised to see that she might have half siblings. She also doesn't expect how angry her mom will be when Kendall announces this news.

Kendall persuades Mia (who's parents have gone on a cruise) to "take a trip to see Grandma" over spring break, which really means driving from Colorado to Arizona to meet the first half sibling. Along with Mia's older brother Gabe, they take off on an adventure to find the rest of Mia's family.

I loved being along for Kendall's adventure, seeing the experiences she has and the lessons she learns. Kendall is definitely a work in progress, and she's driven by a voracious hunger for these experiences that's on the edge of uncomfortable sometimes, for both me and her friends. But she figures out by the end what really matters, and it's completely (in an unexpected way) satisfying.

Fantastic!

Highly delightful, GLORIOUSLY NON-PROBLEMATIC intrapersonal road-trip adventure rom com!
Seriously, from laugh out loud, to oooh lala, to fry an egg on my forehead angst, to tear jerker moments All Over The Map hits every designation spot.
Fantastic writing! Excellent plot, fabulous smile-face-sigh ending.
I love that it centers Kendall, our teen leading lady, & her internal & external experience, IN HER OWN STORY! I’m so over stories, ESPECIALLY about SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRLS who should be focusing on CRAFTING THE LIFE & FUTURE THEY WANT, being all about a boy they barely know, or one they are overwhelmingly obsessed with— and not because that doesn’t ever happen in reality, but because, after living life reflective of the narratives surrounding us, when women get to about middle age & realize THAT WAS OUR TIME & we wasted instead it trying to crush on blokes we’d never see again like it was on a vital to-do list, it’s disheartening to see more of those narratives pumped out to persuade a new generation of girls to waste the years that are NECESSARILY supposed to be about THEIR OWN LIFE chasing more boys they’ll never see again after graduation.
Loved it ALL.
There’s enough ooh lala to make it rom-comm-iesque, without contorting it into the usual super-improbable shapes.
Love!
Will be happily awaiting more from Lanie Jacobs.❤️
