The story and life of Stephen found in Acts is in part a story of firsts. Stephen had the privilege of being “first” Christian martyr, dying in the name of Christ and in service to his Lord. Someone had to be first. Someone had to be the one who, in the name of Christ, would die at the hands of those that would seek to persecute and to destroy the church. Unlike any of these others, Stephen was the first who, in his martyrdom, was the catalyst that triggered the rapid and extensive expansion of the early church. This study of Stephen found in Acts 6-8, will look at 1) the calling of Stephen to service, 2) consider his powerful sermon, and 3) look at his legacy and impact in hopes that we too might give consideration to our own “firsts”.
