A Lantern Left Burning: A Cosy Sapphic Romance Novella

Rate this book
Linnea Worth is burning out.

Artisan Linnea has no time for rest. The commissions keep piling up, the days blur into sleepless nights, and there’s never a moment to breathe. She can’t afford distractions, and definitely not the kind that come with a warm touch and a devastating smile.

But when her carelessness sparks disaster, she catches the sharp attention of Iris, a singer and healing attendant at Esk’s illustrious Gardens. Iris is beautiful, graceful, and infuriatingly overbearing. And she’s determined to be the one distraction Linnea can’t push away.

Linnea has never let anyone take care of her, and she won’t start now. Certainly not Iris, with her lovely hair and gentle hands. But Linnea is wearing herself to nothing, falling apart piece by piece—and the one thing that might save her is the one thing she won’t let herself have.

A Lantern Left Burning is a cosy, sapphic romance between an artisan working herself to dust and the one person who catches her before she falls apart. This novella has hurt/comfort, sapphic yearning, and lots of tense hair-washing and wound-tending. It is closed door, and is the third standalone in the Muses of Esk fantasy series. It is not necessary to have read the others to enjoy this one.

“You want to be useful so badly you’re willing to bleed for it. It doesn’t matter if you know your limits if you willingly throw yourself beyond them.”

oh this was so comforting and nurturing 😭 this whole series has an ethereal atmosphere as dreamy and light as gossamer, but i especially enjoyed the message of a lantern left burning.

the challenge and burnout of artistry when you have to push yourself past the limits for capitalism, telling yourself you'll rest when demand slows down (it won't), putting your dreams on the backburner for obligation and foregoing passion for duty or what you're "supposed" to do.

take care of yourself, slow down, and have a cup of tea 🍵

“I used to be someone I liked. I’m not sure where she went.”
“I promise you, she’s right here.”

“You put yourself first, Linnea. Now. Always. You care for this body first. These clever hands. These fine shoulders. This lovely mouth. You look after yourself, and when it feels like you can’t, you let me look after you... That’s how you stand it.”

Lantern Left Burning is the third standalone novella in the Muses of Esk series by Thea Hawthorne. This sweet little sapphic romance is packed full of heart, relatable characters, and genuine intimacy despite the closed-door spice. It has a lovely setting described with beautiful imagery.
Linnea has lost her zest for life in her pursuit to be the best at her trade and serve a meaningful purpose, but her overwhelming responsibility takes a toll on her mental and physical health. Iris takes Linnea's lack of boundaries and questionable self-care routine (read: nonexistent) personally and is offended by how reliant she has become on being a doormat. She steps in to insist that health and happiness must come first.
Both Linnea and Iris are delightful personalities, distinct and believable.
Lantern Left Burning is short, but it is complete with an engaging plot driven by character interactions and development. The atmospheric novella has beautiful, sensual moments and sparse dialogue that is intentional and important.
I will be reading the other books in this series and anything else Thea Hawthorne writes.
PS. The covers are beautiful!

This book was amazing!!! It was so heartbreaking reading Linnea’s entire story, she really can’t catch a break. Her whole story is just so emotional, she truly doesn’t get a minute before Iris swoops in.
Iris!!! Literally our savior, literally a goddess of a woman, literally perfection. She cares so much for Linnea and Linnea only (as she should) When other characters were describing their experiences with Iris and it was so different from the Iris the reader and Linnea know I thought something would go wrong, but no!! Iris truly does care so much and loves Linnea so much, it was such a beautiful story to read. I wish we would have gotten more romance scenes because Linnea deserves them honestly, and they are just so beautiful and happy when they are together.
It was so heartbreaking reading about both Linnea’s and Iris’s families too, and the way that kind of forced them both into their careers, but the difference of Iris loving hers and Linnea preferring gold smithing.
After reading about Linnea’s parents as well as the other drops of information we got about the air guard and what happens on the ships, I really can’t wait for more, this book definitely gave readers a better understanding of the storm beasts, but I would love the whole story of what happens up there.
The ending!!! Perfect!! Beautiful!!! What we all deserved!!! I hope all the progress doesn’t just reverse itself after the winter is over though, I need more from Iris and Linnea I think!!

This is my new favorite in the Muses series, because it feels specifically tailored to me. Diving into the intricacies of aether - how it’s worked into the trinkets of Esk’s upper echelons, how it is harvested and transmuted to glittering jewels and lamps to light the paths - is something I’ve been anxious to explore ever since the first Muses, and this novella gave me everything I hoped for.

Linnea and Iris have all the hallmarks of a Thea Hawthorne couple: two people from entirely different worlds that are drawn to each other from the second they meet. Linnea’s stubbornness to give herself a break for fear of disappointing people reminds me a tad too much of me, but sometimes you need that reminder to take a breath. I love Iris’ softness, how she’s able to bring that out of Linnea with ease. And the bath scenes? Oh, I am weak at the knees.

Full of sweetness, tender moments, and aether-kissed delight, Thea Hawthorne’s newest novella is best enjoyed with a steaming cup of lavender tea.

A LANTERN LEFT BURNING by Thea Hawthorne

"You are not a component, Worth. You are not a material to be chipped at, broken down, sectioned off. You deserve more than to be used up in the pursuit of others' glory."

Burnt-out artisan Linnea Worth is determined to hide her fraying edges, but a disastrous mistake captures the attention of Iris, a perceptive and infuriatingly gentle singer. As Iris refuses to be pushed away, Linnea finds herself fighting her most forbidden distraction: the one person who sees she needs care and is determined to give it, whether Linnea wants it or not.

There are stories that offer comfort, and then there are stories that hold up a mirror to the quiet, aching parts of your own heart. A Lantern Left Burning is, miraculously, both. While it presents itself as a cosy sapphic romance, this novella is an emotional tide that pulls you under from the very first page, exploring the crushing weight of creative burnout and the profound, transformative power of being truly seen. There is a theme that courses through all of the Muses books: to be loved is to be known. Once again, Thea Hawthorne proves she is a master of crafting tales that are as intimate as they are vast.

Linnea Worth is an aetherworker, one of only nine in the world, whose rare talent is both a gift and a curse. She is essential to the artisans of Esk, the silent force that makes their creations glow, yet she is trapped by her own skill. Thea’s portrayal of Linnea’s internal struggle is deeply resonant. It’s the familiar, suffocating guilt of being indispensable; the belief that you cannot stop, even when you are tired, even when you are bored, because the world needs what you can do. Linnea’s exhaustion is tangible, a layer of bone dust settling over her very soul, and she hates being seen in her weariness, hates being found wanting.

Then, into this quiet world of duty and dust, walks Iris. A nightingale from the healing Gardens, Iris is everything Linnea is not: confident, perceptive, and utterly unapologetic in her pursuit of what—and who—she wants. Their initial encounters are a masterclass in tension. There is a spark in their every exchange, from a shared bath in the healing waters to Iris’s sharp, insightful observations that chip away at Linnea’s carefully constructed walls. Their dynamic is perfectly captured in one of my favourite moments: when Linnea insists her wellbeing is not Iris’s concern, Iris’s quiet, devastating reply—"If you were my concern, we wouldn't have this problem"—sets the entire tone for their gentle romance.

As with Thea’s other stories, the world of Esk feels alive and layered. The lore expands with quiet confidence; we get unsettling hints about the true nature of aetherstorms, the stoic secrecy of the airguard, and the mention of a "Night of the Muses." These details are woven so seamlessly into the narrative that they feel like a collective memory, something lodged in one’s mind as if the reader also were an inhabitant of Esk. Every drop of information enriches the world without ever pulling focus from the deeply personal story at its core, making it glow as if it were crafted with aether. The atmosphere is, as always, impeccable. You can feel the constant, damp chill of Esk, the sting of aether under your nails, and the soothing warmth of the healing springs.

At its heart, A Lantern Left Burning is a story about learning to value yourself. It’s about the battle against the internal voice that tells you your only worth lies in your utility. Iris does not simply save Linnea; she offers her a space to heal, reminding her that she is not a tool to be used up. She shows Linnea that it is not only permissible but essential to rest, to have desires, and to reclaim the parts of herself she had sacrificed. Their love story is a quiet, steady process of caretaking, of learning to let go, and of finding the courage to be more than what the world demands.

This novella is a quiet masterpiece of character and emotion. It is a story for anyone who has ever felt ground down by their own talents, for anyone who has forgotten what it feels like to create something for the pure joy of it. It is a reminder that you are not a component, but a whole person deserving of rest, joy, and a love that helps you find your way back to yourself. There is a lesson for many of us to learn, and a comfort to take.

Whatever Thea Hawthorne writes next, I will be there, waiting.

A Lantern Left Burning is an endearing and lyrical little novella.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you love description, you will enjoy Thea Hawthorne's beautiful and evocative prose. This was my first time reading about the world of Esk and I'm already eager to read more. I adore the way Hawthorne describes her world within A Lantern Left Burning.

"The river-rush is a constant chorus, drowning out the rustle of the last-clinging leaves and the faint chirp of birds. The soil is winter dark, rich and soft with autumn spoil, and each step releases a drift of forest scent."

Oftentimes I'll find the worldbuilding lacking in novellas because there is such limited page space, but that was not the case this time! I found there to be sufficient explanation on the social dynamics in this world and really enjoyed the magic system. I am so intrigued by the stormbeasts and how aether is collected.

I did wish there was a bit more relationship development between Linnea and Iris, but with only 116 pages, something has to give. A fast-paced romance in a novella is a given and I did enjoy the longing and anticipation that Hawthorne was able to squeeze in.

However, one note on the theme of this novella: This does follow a main character suffering burnout who learns to put herself first and allow her body necessary time to rest. I don't really enjoy when a love interest is a catalyst for this realization. I much prefer when a character learns to believe they are worthy of rest (everyone is) of their own volition, rather than experiencing that because a love interest tells them and *like magic* they finally believe it. For me it feels more long-lasting when it is a self-propelled journey encouraged by those around the individual. I didn't love a bit of the framing at the end where Linnea speaks about how her love for Iris and Iris herself is what makes her able to take the time for herself.

"[Linnea] is not to work with aether. Not for the rest of the winter. Any other year, she would have ignored him blithely, but this year is different. This year, she has Iris, [...]"

&

"You look so well lately." / "It's you, you know."

That is largely what held this novella back from that coveted fifth star for me. That and the fact that I did want more of the development of Linnea and Iris's love story on the page, but that is very much a personal preference.

And all of that said, I did enjoy Linnea's journey. It was heartbreaking listening her internal dialogue and how hard she was on herself. I was absolutely fist pumping when Iris stood up for her. While I wish their relationship had a bit more development and depth, I found Linnea to be a well-developed character within a novella setting. She had a solid personality with quirks, negative features, and positive attributes.

"You want to be useful so badly you're willing to bleed for it. It doesn't matter if you know your limits if you willingly throw yourself beyond them."

Overall, this was a quick, cozy, closed door romance within an intriguing and compelling world. It delivered on my expectations and introduced me to a new author!

My goodness, this was a tidal wave of fantastic and emotional writing. I went into this novella thinking it would be a cozy and cute romance, but what I got was an emotional powerhouse that absolutely floored me. The depths that this story delves into reached my heart in a way few have.

The writing is lush and poetic, and it is easy to be swept up into the atmospheric and gorgeous prose. From the first page, I knew that this was going to be something genuinely special.

Linnea works as a sort of magical artisan. She's incredible at what she does, and the skill that she has is so rare that only 8 others even exist. But, she's depressed, burnt out, and lonely. Iris is a singer at the city's healing gardens. She's sociable and confident, and she's completely smitten with the pieces of art that Linnea creates.

One of the more incredible parts of this story is the way that Thea Hawthorne portrays the certain kind of depression that Linnea struggles with. Often, depression is written as just wanting to do nothing. However, Linnea's turmoil manifests in this need to do better, and to prove herself to someone, anyone, that she is worthy. (It is literally her surname). So she works herself to the bone. She is a people pleaser to the end, and takes on too much work over and over, even at the detriment of her own health.

The care that Hawthorne takes with Linnea's mental health really struck me deep down. I think many of us can relate to the feeling of being very good at your job and at the same time greatly disliking it, but being too afraid to try anything else. Just because you have a skill and are needed does not mean you need to sacrifice your mental or physical health for it, especially if it doesn't make you happy. It took me a very long time to learn this in my own personal life -- an office and a paycheck and a title is not worth the mental health sacrifice. Maybe that's why this book meant so much to me. Because the nuanced, beautiful care that Hawthorne takes when writing this is something to behold.

The romance between Linnea and Iris is sweet and tender. It is gentle. From their very first interaction at the healing pools, to other, more spoilery things, I can only describe their romance as gentle. And it's exactly what both characters need. These hurt and tired girls learn that it is okay to lean on each other. Their chemistry is immediate and it is palpable. I fell in love with their love.

This novella has the lovely bonus of also having a really fantastic and caring friend group. It is not about finding your found family, but perhaps ~re~finding your found family. It was the sweet extra drop of honey in an already excellent cup of tea.

I was incredibly lucky to receive an ARC of this wonderful book. All opinions are my own. And you can absolutely bet that I will be first in line to buy it in paperback when it comes out.

i’m so grateful to have received yet another arc by thea hawthorne and to return to esk, it truly is so whimsical and cosy. i truly do love the idea of aether and how magic can also be harmful, despite its beauty.

Linnea feels like such a relatable character, in the sense that she feels as if she must do something simply because she can, rather than doing what makes her happy, because she feels as if she isn’t good enough at it. my heart truly did ache for her, and i think i found a little bit of myself in her, too. after all, we’re all people pleasers seeking validation in some way or another to some extent, right?

i’m also choosing to believe that the peices that Madoc commissioned her for were intended as a gift for Zanthini.

ALLB is a cute sapphic story following an exhausted aetherworker and a nightingale.

I loved the dynamic between Linnea and Iris and how you could tell Linnea wanted nothing more than to run off with Iris and do anything she wanted but was trapped by her own lack of self-worth. I also loved how patient Iris was with her.

While I found this to be less atmospheric than the earlier novellas, I understand the narrative choice to forego it!

When you have a main character so fatigued as Linnea, your surroundings will automatically become less noticeable!

I’m still in love with Esk 🌧️

"For those who are too busy, too weary, and too worn – down to reach for brighter things."

A beautiful dedication to a charming lyrical novella. The prose is so lush in description and emotive that I was just whisked away to this magically vibrant world. Linnea has shut herself away solely focused on her work as an Artisan Aetherworker, a rare profession, yet as work piles up, she is close to burn out. Enter the nightingale, Iris, a singer at the luxurious Esk Gardens, who is not afraid to speak her mind and practically inserts herself in Linnea's introverted world.

The romance is a little instantaneous, but you don't feel it to be rushed as there is just enough longing and hesitancy to act on feelings that the story works. Linnea and Iris just compliment each other, and each brings their own personality to the fore without being overbearing. We follow Linnea, yet the impact Iris has is evident throughout as she encourages Linnea to think of herself and follow her dreams without diminishing who she naturally is. It was so well done for a little 116-page novella.

I adored the world-building of a fantastical Victirian era like world full of innovation and creation. It's just gorgeously written and was so rich in detail and description.

The third book in the Muses of Esk series, but is an excellent standalone that speaks for itself in a beautifully original way.

“It’s not about being useful,” Iris says. “It’s about being you. It’s about being someone you like.”
“I used to be someone I liked. I’m not sure where she went.”
“She’s right here,” Iris says, and her hands trace the scars on the back of Linnea’s hand. “I promise you, she’s right here.”

“I didn’t cross your path,” Linnea grits, even as she grabs around Iris’s neck to steady herself.
“You came here.” “And aren’t you lucky I did.”

“You are your own master, are you not?

“They bleed,” Linnea says. Twist, weave, loop. “They’re real enough. And aetherwork requires something living. It’s a kind of alchemy. An exchange. The aether left in a beast’s remains is fading, because the beast is dead. And we take it into ourselves, let it taste life again, and then push it back into the thing we wish it to inhabit. Aether has its own life. It is a curious magic. It is hungry. You have to coax it or bargain with it or trick it. There aren’t many people who have the knack for doing it.”
“You make it sound rather terrifying.”
“It can be. Aetherworkers have a lot of secrets, in truth. We’re not meant to talk much about it. We swear an oath to the Crown when we start our apprenticeships.”

“That artisan’s work is not more important than your health.”
“You are the only one in Esk who would think that.”
Iris’s touch startles her. Cool, firm. A finger under her chin, tipping her face up. “I don’t think that is true,” she says softly. “I am not the only one. But I am the one who is here, and I will not stand by while you break yourself apart for others. You are not a component, Worth. You are not a material to be chipped at, broken down, sectioned off. You deserve more than to be used up in the pursuit of others’ glory. What about your own glory?”

This little book manages to transport you to a magically crafted world yet it is so relatable and really speaks to the idea that it's important in life to just pause and breathe as it's so easy to get wrapped up and focus all our energy on work and just getting by day to day. But this short but amazing little book just pokes the reminder that we all need to take time to ourselves, and it's important to surround yourself with people who encourage you to just be you.

Thank you so much, Thea Hawthorne, for the ARC. It was a lovely and insightful read.

🌙 ‘You are not a component, Worth. You are not a material to be shipped at, broken down, sectioned off. You deserve more than to be used up in the pursuit of other’s glory. What about your own glory.’ 🌙

Wow, this was such a beautifully written novella. I read it in one sitting! It was heartwarming, wholesome and emotional, and such an enjoyable read! I loved it! I will absolutely need to read the rest of the books in The Muses of Esk series! 💗

In a Lantern Left Burning, we follow artisan and aetherworker Linnea Worth, who is teetering on the edge of burnout. As only one of 8 aetherworkers, she constantly feels pressure to fulfill the demands of her customers for her work; the days drawing in to sleepless nights. But working with aether is a dangerous task, and most people cannot withstand the pain of working with it- even someone as experienced as Linnea is not immune from its dangers.
One day, Linnea’s carelessness sparks disaster, catching the sharp attention of Iris, a singer and healing attendant at Esk’s illustrious Gardens. Iris is beautiful, graceful, and infuriatingly overbearing, and she notices how Linnea is starting to slip beyond her breaking point. She is determined to be the one distraction that Linnea can’t push away.

Linnea has never let anyone take care of her, and she certainly won’t start now. Even if it’s the one thing deep down she most wants, the one thing she most needs. Linnea is wearing herself to nothing, falling apart piece by piece—and the one thing that might save her is the one thing she won’t let herself have. 🤍

🌙 ‘It’s not about being useful. It’s about being you. It’s about being someone you like.’ 🌙

The concept behind this novella is really interesting to me! I love the idea of Linnea’s job being an aetherworker- that even though it is dangerous, there are very real and understandable reasons why she feels like she must continue to do it and fulfil the high demands of her customers. Even if deep down it’s not what she truly wants. I feel like this message will resonate with a lot of people and it certainly did with me- that even though it is good to be selfless and caring in life, there has to be things you are selfish with, like your health and happiness. I love how Iris saves Linnea in the book, reminding her how to be happy, to step away from her work and enjoy life and allow someone to care for her, which doesn’t come naturally. I really loved Iris and Linnea’s relationship, it was so heartwarming and wholesome how it was built throughout the book. 💗

🌙 ‘You want to be useful so badly you’re willing to bleed for it. It doesn’t matter if you know your limits if you willingly throw yourself beyond them.’ 🌙

Tropes:
🌙 Cosy & sapphic
✨ Creative burnout
🌙 People pleaser x she does as she pleases

If you love a heartfelt and wholesome cosy romance, with magic, homemade gifts, rainy riverside dates and an FMC who finds her passions and true identify through the pressures of life, give A Lantern Left Burning a read! 💗

Thank you so much to Thea Hawthorne for sending me this ARC to read, I absolutely loved it! ☺️

TW: burnout, negative self-talk, working with animal bone, scale and blood, death (of parents, mentioned), nose bleeds, magical injuries and illness, symptoms of chronic illness.
”I used to be someone I liked. I’m not sure where she went.” “She’s right here,” Iris says, and her hands trace the scars on the back in Linnea’s hand. “I promise you, she’s right here.”

I was promised a cozy sapphic romance, with interesting magic and characters that work themselves to the bone until they find a way to heal and give themselves grace and author delivered. I wanted to dive into this world head first. The way author describes the world, the magic and its affects, and locations seem to fly off the page like a watercolor painting— art in itself, it was just beautiful to read. The story was short and simple and yet characters were so easy to empathize with even in their brutal and honest states. The closed door romance was lovely and heartening to read as characters learn to open up and fight for themselves in the smallest and largest of ways despite not always believing they are enough. I loved reading their journey, and the chemistry between characters was very nicely done.
The rain is nothing more than a hazy mist ghosting her footsteps. The rain is cold and sweet on her tongue, tasting of distant snow. Winter is right around the corner, waiting to shiver down from the grey skies.

In under 150 pages, author was able to create a world and a magic system that was not only easy to understand but beautifully expressed. The imagery woven throughout was entrancing and with this being my first impression of this world, I know without a doubt that readers could pick up any one of the books set in this world and ease into the story and the world without issue. I am so happy I was able to get the ARC of this book, and I look forward to diving back into the world of the Muses of Esk in the future. As always, all thoughts and opinions in my review are wholly my own.

A Lantern Left Burning by Thea Hawthorne (spoilers tagged ahead)
This novella is a quiet, emotionally resonant piece that explores burnout, care, and the slow thaw of vulnerability. Linnea Worth, a solitary artisan, is written with a kind of weary realism that makes her exhaustion feel tactile. Her reluctance to accept help is frustrating at times, but also deeply human.

Iris, the Nightingale, brings a gentle persistence that’s both comforting and slightly idealized. Their dynamic leans into familiar hurt/comfort territory, but Hawthorne handles it with restraint — no melodrama, just small, intimate moments that feel earned. The care giving scenes are standout: tender, charged, and beautifully written.

The prose is soft and lyrical, and Esk adds a quiet magic that complements the emotional arc rather than distracting from it. It’s a closed-door sapphic romance, but the intimacy is emotional first and foremost, as with other titles in the Muses of Esk series.
If you’re looking for something gentle, introspective, and sapphic — with a focus on healing rather than heat — this is worth picking up. It’s a lantern left burning, indeed: steady, warm, and quietly illuminating.

Thank you so much to Thea Hawthorne for providing me with an EARC

I'm such a huge fan of this world, both in the Muses of Esk novella series and now the longer works. This is the kind of cozy fantasy that I love: rich language, thorough worldbuilding, and realistic characters with the types of everyday problems that are familiar enough to be personally relatable, but magical enough to be unique. Beautiful.

I was a bit frustrated by the number of passively constructed sentences that relied on gerunds. People who aren't grammar nerds might find this picky, but every time I ran into one of those sentences it was like when you kick a rock that you didn't see poking up out of an otherwise lovely woodland trail. I also wished that the finale had relied more on agency than on "lessons learned the hard way." I was rooting for Linnea to complete her arc on her own. I understand why the author wrote things this way, but I would have liked to see Linnea make that choice for herself.

Overall, most of my quibbles were minor. If you've read other books in this series, you know what to expect... a beautiful bite-sized sapphic romance with slightly prickly characters who are soft for each other. My love of grumpy/sunshine romance is swiftly becoming eclipsed by my love of grumpy/grumpy.

Thank you to the author for the ARC of this novella. I'm a day one stan for Esk and its inhabitants. <3

immerse yourself in the enchanting world of esk in this cozy, sapphic fantasy romance. thea hawthorne masters the art of a fulfilling, magical world and characters that make you feel the most in her latest novella.

linnea worth, aptly named for someone who struggles to place value on herself and her time, is burning out. she accepts countless work offers without considering her well-being. when she meets her limit and her body forces her to pause, she meets singer and healer iris at the healing baths. there’s a spark there, but linnea can’t afford any distractions—her work is too important. as she continues her work, wearing herself thin, the only thing that might save her is opening herself up to iris, and learning to slow down.

hurt and comfort is a trope near and dear to my heart, and hawthorne portrays it flawlessly. i melted at the tender bathing and hairwashing scenes between both women. this form of intimacy is seldom witnessed in fantasy novels and i desperately crave more. falling in love with linnea and thea is as easy as falling into bed after a long day.

i cannot reccomend this book enough, and i look forward to sharing my thoughts on the rest of the series soon!

with love,

But now she wakes up and each day ripples before her, full of small, delightful moments waiting, gleaming like white quartz in a forest stream.

Hawthorne has done it again. The rain soaked of Esk shines so brightly, bathed in aether lights and the lies we sometimes tell ourselves until someone comes along to help us see more clearly and speak and admit our truths.

Iris does that for Linna, with patience, with acceptance and perhaps with a bit of wisdom. Linna, dear Linna is exhausted and aimless as burnouts tend to do to us, and is at parts an echo or a mirror of thoughts we all had at least once in our lives. Our work is not enough, we are not enough and we'll never get better or get more and what happens when we have nothing left to give even to things we are good at? But in time we learn, just like Linna does that life is made of small, delightful moments waiting and we should not let work make us small and unworthy but instead we should just live.

As always, I have loved both the characters and the story and coming back to Esk, like slipping on my favourite blanket to keep me warm and cozy and to be known.

Once again I thank Thea Hawthorne for the ARC. All opinions expressed here are my own.

A Lantern Left Burning is a cozy sapphic romance novella, following a hard-working artesian, Linnea. She has devoted her entire life to creating beautiful masterpieces for the town of Esk, with the magic of aether infusions - a skill only very few people can handle. However, one day her entire world is altered when she meets a gorgeous performer, Iris whilst having a self-care day for her work injuries. Iris is determined to help Linnea find more value in herself, something outside of her working skills, and in finding herself, they find something sparking between them too. This novella is so heartwarming and cute, you'll be smiling the whole time. Its a really good read if youre just looking for something to breeze through, but is still entertaining. There isnt any spice, but the romance is still very much there with the silent yearning between the two women. A Lantern Left Burning is also a bit of an eye-opener to all of the people out there (me) who see themselves simply as a product to their work, we become almost mechanical in the way we force ourselves to work harder, ignoring our human needs - this cozy story makes you wonder how bad a break from it all really could be (plot twist, its not that bad, please take a day off babe).

A Lantern Left Burning was a beautiful, artfully crafted novella. I really enjoyed it. We all read books for various reasons, whether for knowledge, pleasure, change or comfort. This novella falls into the comfort category for me, in the absolute best way. I greatly enjoyed the lack of angst, and the authenticity that was offered here. I went into this expecting something cozy and comforting and it did not disappoint. It did however do more than that for me. It was cozy and peaceful in all the ways I needed, but it also was exactly what I love in a book. It shows that vulnerability and being honest is something you have to do with yourself first. If you’re not honest with yourself and your needs, you will struggle to admit those to other people too. How could you be honest with others when you don’t even know what it looks like to yourself? Yet it asked these questions in the perfect way. It wasn’t overbearing, it wasn’t demanding. It simply showed how love can show up in those quiet moments.

Received an ARC copy but all opinions are my own. This review was posted of my own volition.

What an absolute gem of a novella! A Lantern Left Burning is a beautifully written, cozy fantasy that swept me away with its charm and emotional depth. Set in the magical world of Esk, the story immediately pulled me in with its rich atmosphere and gentle pacing.

The heart of this book lies in its characters—especially Linnea, who I found so deeply relatable. Her quiet strength, uncertainty, and kindness made her a joy to follow. And the romance? Just adorable. The chemistry between Linnea and Iris is soft, sweet, and genuinely touching. Their connection felt natural and left me smiling more than once.

Even though it’s a standalone, this novella made me want to dive deeper into the world of Esk. There’s a real sense of history and magic here that lingers even after the final page. If the rest of the series is anything like this, I’m absolutely coming back for more.

Perfect for fans of low-stakes fantasy, quiet romance, and stories that feel like a warm hug. Highly recommended!

5 this is s self-care message if I ever heard one out of 5

*Thank you Thea Hawthorne for sending me an eARC *

I love the Muses of Esk series, such lovely, heart-warming cozy novellas. This one is my favorite.

The world of Esk is melancholic, rainy, full of aether magic, somewhere you'd like to curl up in a cozy tea shop with a nice cup of tea and fluffy biscuits, watching the rain through the window.

A Lantern Left Burning is a beautiful and gentle romance about learning to take care of yourself and letting others taking care of yourself.
My heart sinks for Linnea, I relate so much to her. I, too, used to work too much, I didn't know boundaries, I wanted to please everyone and I thought my limits were endless so I was overwhelmed and burned out.
What she's living and how she feels is so well written, you just want to wrap her up in a blanket and feed her soul healing soup.
Iris is also a great character, she is caring, sensible and doesn't care about what others think or say.

This is a standalone novella so you can read it individually but I highly recommend  reading the 3 for extra cozyness, heart warming and soul soothing.

This novella was atmospheric and full of heart. Though short, there were no details lacking, which made it feel as if it were a full novel. Having not read any other of Thea’s works, this book threw me into a beautifully crafted world that was intrinsically well thought out and complex yet understandable. I immediately want to read more of this ethereal magical world. We got to know the main character so intimately and I truly felt for her and understood her motivations. The slow building romance was well paced and came from a place of deep caring, not just lust or attraction that can be popular amongst romance books. This gave the romance such a whole hearted and unfeigned sense of sincerity that I absolutely adored.

I will definitely be reading more of Thea’s works as I loved every aspect of this book; from the plot, to the romance, the world building, and in depth characters. It is books like this that raise my standards for fantasy romances.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Linnea  is struggling.

That's not the path she wanted to take. Working to something she had talent and legacy for, but absolutely loathed; something that was threatening her well-being.

Needless to say, Linnea was having a hard time. And when things grew stilted, she met sweet Iris, and her whole life changed, slowly and then all at once.

The question remaining for the woman was, what mattered the most from this point onwards.

We’re back in the universe of Esk with a sweet, cozy, sapphic novella that was very recently released. I have already gathered that Thea Hawthorne manages to write the sweetest, most comforting fantasy reads, that also feel so relatable. And this one feels even more so, as we're meeting Linnea, who struggles with themes of duty and personal dreams. It hits too close home and it's rather endearing. The author’s skill is already known, and it feels perfect if you seek something comforting to read.

Thank you for the copy, Thea-reading your work never fails to make me all giddy and fuzzy.

Cosy sapphic fantasy with splendid worldbuilding
This was a new author for me and I really enjoyed this cosy fantasy set in the world of Esk. What really sold me was the intricate worldbuilding which shines through in every sentence. The novella transported me effortlessly into Esk, its society and the aether magic.
The story about Linnea, the aetherworker drew me in: Linnea has high standards and an even higher sense of duty. She is so focused on her aether magic (loved the descriptions!) that she is oblivious to friends, her health and life in general. Meeting Iris, a nightingale and singer in the healing gardens, slowly draws her out of the prison of her own making.
The story is unfolding unhurriedly, there is a lot packed into the novella and Hawthorne really has a way with words which suits the setting and tone of the story.
I look forward to more stories of Esk!

I received an ARC. The review is left voluntarily.

A Lantern Left Burning is a beautiful, emotional, magical cosy novella wrapped in gold dust, alchemy, secrets and longing.

For just over 100 pages, this novella (I read as a standalone but it part of a collection), is a gorgeous and poetic blend of dark stormy magic, artisanal craft and bittersweet pride.

Linnea has been carefully crafted by Thea, creating such a striking and well of emotion explored through this characters mental well being. Linnea’s inability to avoid disappointing clients of her gifted work carried from grief and depths of responsibility, by continuously chipping g parts of herself away until gentle Iris comes along.

This was such a lovely and poetic read, my only minor quibble are the small moments of being told rather than shown which would have created such enrichment and connection to the characters and this wonderful world Thea has created. Overall I’d love to continue with this novella series as well as start All Woven With Ivy too.

Who would have thought that a story so short might have an impact so great?

A Lantern Left Burning is a comforting story about burnout and pushing yourself in the name of pleasing those around you. It has magic, a sapphic storyline, and the reminder of the importance to look after yourself wholeheartedly.

I loved this novella more than I expected to. While the tone was sadder at times, I found myself between the lines where Linna relentlessly sacrificed herself in the name of her work and others. And I am so glad that aether and aetherwork was explored more deeply in this novella; it is such a unique concept and was explained so whimsically and well.

I thought the progression of the story and Linna’s relationship with Iris was well paced and plotted as well. Also, it was nice to see Madoc from All Woven With Ivy make a cameo appearance or two.
