Sandy Harbor #2

All the Ways You Break Me

Rate this book
“Promise you’ll be there?” Ian’s eyes plead with me. I take a shaky breath and nod my head even as my heart is shattering into a million pieces. I thought the boy in front of me would be my future. But I’ll have to break my promise if I want to keep my family safe…

Ten years after fleeing Sandy Harbor Island, Josie’s hometown is the last place she wants to be. But she’s maid of honor for her sister Madeline and determined to give her the beachside wedding of her dreams.

Josie hadn’t reckoned on the best Ian. One look in his sky-blue eyes and she’s back to the summer she turned eighteen, waitressing at the sailing club. She never expected the son of the island’s wealthiest property developer to notice her. But sun-kissed days out on the water showed Josie that Ian had the kindest heart and biggest dreams.

Their future had only just begun when Josie’s life was torn apart. She can never tell Ian why she ran away. She’ll just avoid him all week and leave as soon as the wedding is over.

But Ian’s oceanside cottage is the only place to stay, and wedding events throw them together in all kinds of ways. It’s clear from every lingering glance and accidental brush of hands that neither of them ever forgot that fleeting, magical summer…

But the harder Josie falls, the more danger she’s in of revealing her secret. Ian is the one person who can never, ever know what she did on that life-shattering day a decade ago. But if Josie runs away—forever this time—will she break her own heart all over again?

An absolutely heart-shattering and gorgeously escapist romance, perfect for fans of Carley Fortune, Catherine Cowles, Mia Sheridan, and anyone who believes in second chances.

If you love these tropes, this book is for Second chance romance Forced proximity Sister’s best friend Forbidden love Best man and maid of honor Small town romance

༊*·˚ After leaving her hometown of Sandy Harbor ten years prior, it’s the last place Josie wants to be. There are so many secrets and pain associated with that fateful day that made her and her family flee as quickly as possible. But now she’s back for her sister’s wedding, and to make matters worse, the best man is her first love, Ian. She tries to keep her distance, but every time she looks at him, she can’t help but remember the connection they had all those years ago. Josie knows he can feel it, too, but the secrets she is harboring will ruin him, just as they did her. Can she tell him the truth about that summer and have a second chance with him, or will the pain be too great for either of them to overcome?

༊*·˚ Ugh! This was so heartbreaking! 😭💔 I was on the verge of tears MULTIPLE times while I was reading this. I want to give Josie a big hug because she didn’t deserve any of the crap she went through, nor did her family. I’m not going to spoil anything, but all I’m going to say is that POS deserved what he got coming to him. 😑

This book was so good! At first, I had trouble remembering what happened in the first book that led to where the characters are, so I went to my review, and what the heck, that didn’t help! Don’t read it because it’s no help whatsoever. 😂 But eventually, the plot and ending of All the Ways You Save Me finally came to mind, so I was able to read this without much confusion. I was just happy to be back in Sandy Harbor.

The writing was great, as always, the characters felt like real people, and I wanted them all to have happy endings because they went through enough crap as is, and the story kept me glued to my seat. I was literally holding onto my blanket for dear life, not knowing yet knowing what happens to the characters, but hoping I’m wrong because it would be too sad if it went down that route. And you know how I feel about characters holding onto their secrets when just talking will solve their problems, but in this case, I didn’t care because I just wanted both Josie and Ian to find peace and happiness, for Pete’s sake. Did they get happiness and peace? I don’t know. You are going to have to find out for yourself. 😉

All in all, this was a heart-wrenching yet wonderful story of second chances, forbidden love, and finding healing. I definitely recommend this book, but please check the content warnings before you decide if you want to read it. ❤‍🩹

Thoughts
Ian and Josie's story ❤️‍🩹 my babies 🥹 this book was everything I didn't want to binge it but here's me hoping there's more books in this series 🤞🏻 this universe is so beautiful -- the attachment is real🥲 the characters, the plot, pacing of events, the writing style.. everything was just perfection! Ian is my new book boyfriend🫠 he's so patient, caring, selfless.. Just loyal to the core! The communication between Josie and Ian is the key factor to this read being deeply emotional ( in my opinion) I'm obsessed with this author's writing style and books in general ( yes two books ) were more than enough to consume me! I can't wait to discover her other works!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC

3.5: This book is angsty. Sit-on-your-bed-staring-at-the-wall angsty. So much emotional baggage and unresolved trauma, and characters who are messy, sad, trying their best, and occasionally making choices that made me whisper bestie no out loud.

The emotional moments hit hard. I loved how raw everything felt, especially the way grief and healing were handled. The romance is tender and intense in that "we’re both broken but trying" kind of way, which I’m always a sucker for.

BUT. The pacing was kind of all over the place for me. Some parts dragged, some conflicts wrapped up way too neatly after all that buildup, and I wanted more from a few side characters who felt like they were about to be important and then… weren’t.

Overall though? I cared about the characters and I was invested in their fates. It's not perfect, but it's absolutely worth the read if you like sad people falling in love and working through their equally sad stuff.

Thank you to the publisher Bookouture for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This book was a real tear jerker, tissues are needed when reading this. I felt for Josie carrying all that weight and trauma on her shoulders, having to leave the boy she loved behind and the island she loved. What I enjoyed most about this book was the subject matter was dealt with sensitively, it wasn’t brushed off, swept under the carpet or made light off and Josie didn’t just get over it overnight. I know her mum thought leaving was the best thing, but I think she was impacted by her own experiences when she made that decision. I really enjoyed the romance between Ian and Josie as they seemed to fall together like they did when they were younger, I liked both of them too as they were a perfect fit. I enjoyed the flashback chapters from they were younger detailing what happened and how they originally fell for each. I liked that this was mixed in with the present day chapters, rather than a complete flashback before switching back to present day. The end of the book felt like healing for all the characters and it didn’t feel rushed either. I confess I haven’t read the first book in the series yet but I soon will. Get your tissues at the ready before you dive in.

💬 tldr thoughts: a decent romance book with some pacing issues

In the package:
📦 second chance
📦 secrets
📦 forced proximity
📦 dual timeline

Plot: Josie’s fled her hometown 10 years ago after something horrific happened to her. Now she's back as the maid of honour for her sister's wedding. She's reunited with her first love, Ian, who happens to be the best man. But he doesn't know why Josie disappeared 10 years ago just when they were about to start a relationship...

Thoughts: This was my first book by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The premise sounded interesting when I requested it on netgalley. It was a good mix of romance, drama and suspense. I loved Ian and Josie's story so much and the angst was through the roof with this one. However, I felt like the ending was so abrupt and things wrapped out way too quickly after we find out the truth. It's still a pretty great read and a fast one at that since it's just 300 pages.

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for the eARC!

Melissa Wiesner truly has a gift for writing stories that hurt in the best way and then heal you before the final page.

All The Ways You Break Me takes us back to Sandy Harbor, where Josie returns after ten years away and straight back into the life and love she left behind. The weight of the past hangs heavily over both Josie and Ian, and that tension is felt in every interaction.

The dual timelines worked beautifully here, allowing us to see how one summer shaped everything that followed. I loved how the story balanced second-chance romance with deeper emotional stakes and subtle suspense.

Josie and Ian’s reconnection felt honest, raw, and earned. Their path back to each other wasn’t simple and that’s what made it so satisfying.

This series keeps climbing my list of favorites from this author… and I’m quietly hoping Sandy Harbor isn’t done with us yet.

I was completely obsessed with book one of the Sandy Harbor Series, All The Ways You Save Me, so I couldn’t wait for book two. While Madeline’s story felt beautifully wrapped up in the first book, there were still unanswered questions that had me counting down to the next installment.

In All The Ways You Break Me, we dive into Josie’s story, told through a dual timeline that weaves between what happened eleven years ago and the present day during Madeline’s wedding week. When Josie’s hotel plans fall through, Ian, an old friend from her past and the wedding’s best man, offers her a place to stay. Unfortunately, staying with Ian is the last thing Josie wants. He has no idea why she packed up and left all those years ago, and she’s not sure she can ever bring herself to tell him the truth.

Josie and Ian were absolutely adorable. Melissa did an incredible job revealing their history piece by piece, and every timeline switch left me impatiently waiting to learn what happened next. I loved revisiting Madeline and Garrett, and seeing them in this story made it even more special.I adored this book and really hope that Melissa continues with Chloe and Everly’s story next, because I am not ready to leave Sandy Harbor!

Thank you to the Author and her team for an ARC!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am a big big fan of Melissa Wiesner and am currently working my way through all of her books. Sadly, I think this one isn’t one of my favorites. This is made extra sad because I was so excited to read it after I read “it all comes back to you” and devoured it in less than a day, then saw the announcement for this book and how it was about Josie and Ian. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still an incredible book and I will continue reading all of Wiesners books, this just wasn’t my favorite. The specific trope in this book is not my favorite. However, I am an incredible fan of second chance romances and forced proximity, and if you feel the same, this book is for you! The tropes included in this book are second chance romance, forced proximity, sister’s best friend, forbidden love, small town romance, and best man and maid of honor. All of the tropes are done really well and the one trope that isn’t my favorite is not described to be included.

Josie and Ian have a crash meeting, literally, when Josie runs right into him on her first day of work, which she is already late to. It’s her first day as a server at the wealthy country club in her small town. They share an instant connection and Ian even sees them being together when they go off to college in a few months. That’s why it’s so confusing for Ian when he calls Josie one morning and her phone is disconnected, they no longer seem to live in their home, and she has completely disappeared. Years later her sister returns to the island, finds the love of her life, and is getting married. Josie is forced to return to the one place she swore she would never return to. What is worse is that she is forced to return to Ian, who is the best man at his sisters wedding. Josie never imagined she would have to face Ian again, but unfortunately the universe has many different plans for her. Starting when her hotel is overrun by loud drunk men and her AC doesn’t work so she’s forced to stay in Ian’s guest room.

This is a beautiful love story that was disrupted by horrible things. If you are curious about Ian and Josie’s love story, make sure you grab this book!

Just when I thought Wiesner couldn’t write a book that surpasses All The Ways You Save Me, she writes this masterpiece. Bravo!

In this novel we follow Ian and Josie. Between present scenes and flashbacks, we find out these two first met at 18 when Josie worked at a country club for the summer and Ian attended rowing practice at the dock. It was love at first sight for these two, but after a tragic end to the summer, Josie runs off and Ian doesn’t see her again. Not until she is back in town for her sister’s wedding. Is now their chance at love?

This book was beautifully written. I love how Ian did everything he could to correct his fathers’ real estate wrongs and make Sandy Harbor a great place for locals. I liked him since the last book, and this only solidified how much of a good person he is. Josie was equally amazing and so strong. When we discover what she went through, my heart broke for her.

I will say, check the trigger warnings. There is one slightly graphic scene of a situation too many women have found themselves in, but thankfully she gets away. It brought tears to my eyes and had me wanted to hug this character through the book. I want to give kudos to the author for how she handled this topic and scene. It was handled in a way the readers will appreciate.

This author has become an instant read for me. You can’t go wrong with one of her novels.

This novel completely stole my heart. It is emotional, romantic, and impossible to put down. From the first page, I felt pulled into Josie and Ian’s story and didn’t want to leave Sandy Harbor Island.

Josie returning home after ten years is filled with tension and pain, and the moment she runs into Ian again, you can feel everything they never said hanging in the air. Their past summer together is tender and sweet, while the present day story is heavy with longing and regret. I don't usually love dual timelines, but I loved how the story moved between past and present, slowly showing why Josie ran and what it cost them both.

One of the strongest parts of this book is the emotional maturity of the characters. Instead of relying on miscommunications, the story focuses on real fear, real love, and real consequences. Josie’s secret adds a layer of suspense that kept me turning pages, even when I thought I understood what had happened. The emotional payoff was worth it.

Ian is the kind of love interest that’s hard not to fall for. Gawd, he's kind, steady, and deeply loyal. His patience and quiet strength made every interaction between him and Josie feel meaningful. This is a powerful second chance romance about love, sacrifice, and finding the courage to face the past.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. This review is my honest opinion.

All the Ways You Break Me by Melissa Wiesner (Sandy Harbor #2)

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would so I’ll begrudgingly settle for five. After giving the first book in the Sandy Harbor series five stars, I didn’t think it was possible for Melissa Wiesner to outdo herself, but somehow she did.

The writing is absolutely incredible. The emotions feel raw and real, the characters are deeply layered, and the story completely pulls you in from start to finish. This book broke me in the best way and then put me back together again. I was fully invested, heart racing one minute and aching the next.

Melissa Wiesner has such a powerful way with words, and this series truly showcases her talent. I cannot recommend her books enough, but especially the Sandy Harbor series. If you’re on the fence don’t be. This one is unforgettable.

Josie met Ian at the country club where she worked as a waitress the summer before college. Ian is the son of the wealthiest and most influential man on the island so they decide to keep their dating secret. They're excited to be going to colleges so close to each other and start planning their futures together, but then Josie is just gone without a word. Now ten years later, Josie is forced to return to the island for her sister's wedding, determined to stay a fast a she can from Ian. But that turns out to be impossible since he's the best man. As they spend time together , she realizes her feelings for Ian are just as strong as they were then, but he can't ever find out the reason she left.
This book jumps back and forth between the past and present, fitting details like puzzle pieces until the disturbing truth comes out. It's heartbreaking from both character's perspectives and I'm glad they got their HEA, as impossible a it seemed. I was really glad to get the sequel to All the Ways You Save Me since I loved this characters so much. This story is medium paced, character driven, with a little spice and mystery thrown in.

⭐2.75- Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this before the release date.

The premise of this book sounded very promising but unfortunately it fell slightly flat for me.
I didn't feel the connection between the two main characters and the story felt rushed at times. With past and present timelines (while I did enjoy that) I thought it would be easy to feel that hurt and deep love that was described in the blurb but I honestly didn't really care that much.
Fmc kept repeating the same thing at the end of every chapter- how she ruined everything and could never tell what happened. It got slightly boring rather than intriguing and I kept on reading just to find out this big secret.
It was an easy book to fly through, past and present timelines, second chance-had a great potential, but was expecting much more.

Synopsis: After feeling her hometown ten years ago, Josie has to return for her sister’s wedding. She doesn’t expect to be thrown together with Ian, the one person who can never know why she left home.

Thoughts: I am a huge fan of Melissa’s books, and this one did not disappoint! Josie’s story was so heartbreaking and made me cry multiple times. I really loved the choice to write this in two timelines, with the past timeline showing how one summer changed everything for the present. Josie and Ian’s reconnection felt really honest and earned. I have been feral for this book. I checked NetGalley multiple times knowing it would be released soon and finally it was there. I started reading it the same day I got approved for it and read it in less than 24 hours.

This one was a romantic suspense. And while I loved the first book in this series, I loved this one even more. I figured out early on what happened with Josie and Ian, but it was still such a great read to see it all play out. And there was a twist in there that I didn’t see coming and that pleasantly surprised me.

The best part of this book? There were so many opportunities for the author to use misunderstandings as a trope, but she didn’t do it. The characters acted like mature adults who cared about and trusted one another.

While you probably don’t need to read the first book, All the Ways You Save Me, in order to enjoy this one, I do recommend it. It did a good job setting the stage for this one and providing a bit of context.

This one is perfect for fans of:
—> romantic suspense
—> second chance romance
—> small town romance
—> dual timelines and dual POVs

I’m loving this series! Such an enjoyable read. I would classify it as cozy romantic suspense. A genre I didn’t know I needed! There were so many unanswered questions I had about Josie and the Sullivan family after book 1 that I was dying for in book 2! It did not disappoint! Overall the suspense kept me hooked and the love story was chefs kiss.

Is it possible to atone for a tragedy that forever changed another person's life?

That exact question bookends Melissa Wiesner's second book in her Sandy Harbor series.

Josie Sullivan and Ian Langley meet the summer after high school graduation. Their idealism and optimism for all that lies ahead colors their days and fuels their hopes.

With an endless summer before them and the promise of attending neighboring colleges ahead of them, they sail through their initial courtship surrounded by clear skies and calm seas.

But when the unthinkable happens, their idyllic summer turns into the perfect storm--one that changes their future and separates them for over a decade.

Their young love couldn't survive the tragedy, but can this second chance overcome it?

This story is deeply complex and highly emotional, and @melissawiesnerauthor does an excellent job navigating the dual timelines and handling the emotionally traumatic subject matter.

She gives us an authentic (but not overly graphic) look inside the trauma of sexual assault and the devastating impact it has, not just on the victim, but on all the people connected to her.

And near the end of the story, we see how the tragedy impacts Ian's life in ways he hadn't even known were possible.

Another great aspect of this story is that we get to see the resolution of guilt, the triumph of truth, and the healing of relationships.

I appreciated the honest, sensitive way the subject matter was handled and the soft urging for victims to stand up to power and speak their truth.

I highly recommend this book, but please be aware of the triggers.

⚠️ - alcoholism, sexual assault, death of a parent (all on the page)

Okay but when I saw ALL THE WAYS YOU BREAK ME pop up. I already knew I needed to read it because I loved the first Sandy Harbor book and at this point Melissa Wiesner has me fully invested after reading a few of her ARCs.

And let me just say… this one HURT in the best, most emotional way🥺✨

This story follows Josie returning to Sandy Harbor for her sister’s wedding…. the one place she swore she’d never go back to… especially when the best man is Ian, the boy she left behind ten years ago.

Forced proximity, lingering looks, secrets that refuse to stay buried, and a second chance romance that slowly sneaks up on your heart? Yeah… I knew Melissa was going to get me again.

What I loved most is how emotional and real this felt. The dual timeline showing their first love vs. present day tension added so much depth, and watching Josie carry her past while trying not to fall for Ian all over again had me. It’s was beautiful and the angst was TOP TIER.

Then add in the soft moments? Even better.

What you’ll find inside:
💙 Second chance romance
🏡 Small town coastal vibes
💍 Maid of honor x best man tension
🔥 Forced proximity
🤫 Secrets + emotional healing
🌊 All the feels

This book is emotional, hopeful, and quietly devastating. The kind of story that makes you pause between chapters just to breathe.

All The Ways You Break Me is the second book in the Sandy Harbor series, but can definitely be read as a standalone. This book is all about Josie and Ian and their story. After 10 years, Josie is back in her hometown to be by her sister’s side as her maid of honor. Despite not wanting to be back in Sandy Harbor after she left following something horrific, she is set on giving her sister her dream wedding. While in town, Josie is reunited with Ian, who happens to be the best man in the wedding, her first love, and has no idea why she left 10 years ago. Full of secrets, mystery, and romance, Wiesner does an amazing job hooking the reader from the beginning and telling the story of what Josie went through. Review of advance copy received from Netgalley
February 16, 2026
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

3.33

This is a sweet and emotional second-chance romance with a touch of mystery and hidden secrets. The story takes place on an island during a destination wedding, and I really loved this setting.

There is an important twist in the book, but I don’t want to spoil it. I could see the direction of it early on, but that didn’t ruin the experience for me. The topic connected to the twist is quite serious and emotional, and it’s always a difficult subject to read about.

I wasn’t a big fan of the mother’s decision and the way she handled the situation. It frustrated me, but at the same time, without that decision, we wouldn’t have the conflict and the main storyline. So even if I didn’t agree with it, I understand why it was necessary for the plot.

Ian was a great MMC. He felt mature, supportive, and emotionally strong. His character added much warmth to the story. Tbh, I don't know how I feel about Josie... So yeah.

I haven’t read the first book in the series yet, but the author included small glimpses of it without giving spoilers. I really liked Melissa’s writing style, so I will definitely check out the first book as well.

Overall, it was a nice quick read.

Josie is back in Sandy Harbor she is running away from her past but in all fairness there are some things better kept as a secret. But coming back after 10 years welll wasn’t the first thing on her list. She’s back for sisters wedding and as we all know we must show up for our family. As she arrives and settles I tend to believed there is one small or minor detail that is not mentioned to her that her love of her life is the best man . Ian sweet in the eyes sexy and handsome who has wondered what happened kind heart who wants to protect you . Well when you see the woman you loved that all changes. Josie realizes that he can never know why she left but how can that be when the attraction is there and if the closer she gets to Ian as the week goes the harder it will be for her to not involve him in danger !

This book was everything I enjoyed this book even more and I gave this a 4.8 I am so thankful to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this as well as to Melissa 🩷

4.5 ⭐️ (rounded up). This one took me a little while to fully get into, but once it clicked, I absolutely could not put it down. The emotional depth, the character development, and the way the story gradually pulls you in made it so worth the slower start. By the second half, I was completely invested and needed to know how everything would unfold.

Melissa Wiesner does such a beautiful job exploring complicated relationships, healing, and vulnerability. The characters felt real and messy in the best way, and the emotional moments hit hard without feeling forced. It’s the kind of story that sneaks up on you and then suddenly has you fully hooked.

My only small regret is that I didn’t reread the first book in the series beforehand. Since I read this one immediately when it was released, I struggled a bit to remember some of the details and connections from book one. That said, once I got my bearings, I was all in.

Overall, a powerful, emotional read that was completely worth the wait — just maybe refresh your memory on the first book before diving in! 💔📚
