Joshua T. Calvert has traveled the world--on foot, by Jeep, by bicycle, by motorcycle, and lots of other ways besides. As you might imagine, he's seen many things most people never see - including an Iranian prison cell, from the inside! In Kyrgyzstan, he fared slightly better, narrowly avoiding being kidnapped for ransom. Skydiver, scuba diver, martial artist, adventurer - his goal is to experience everything possible, and then make it real to you in his books. And he's made a good run of it so far: in the Philippines, he did police training on multiple types of firearms (despite being no fan of guns himself); dove in Asian waters among sharks and shipwrecks; and patrolled with Sumatran jungle rangers.
That's what defines Calvert's approach to method writing: pushing himself beyond his own limits, to experience first-hand what his characters experience, to make your immersion in his stories as deep as it can be.
For Ganymede Rises, after a slight detour with some smugglers in the deserts of Uzbekistan and the steppes of Mongolia, he traveled by dogsled and snowshoe to the Arctic Circle to experience first-hand what it's like to be utterly isolated in the coldest place on Earth. For his book The Fossil, he sat with professional pilots in flight simulators for Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft to learn what it's like to fly a passenger jet. His latest adventure: a parabolic flight with European Space Agency astronauts, to experience zero-gravity. All so he can describe it to you, in his own words.
The Artifact 2 is the finale of Joshua Calvert's Artifact series and is,put simply, amazing. This is one of those books that keeps the reader guessing, then absolutely leaves the reader shocked when all the disparate threads come together and the truth of what's happening is revealed! In addition to the stunning denouement, the quality of the writing is of the highest caliber, with clear action sequences, excellent descriptions of the events and superb characters. Thor especially, is a dynamic and standout character, and Marcus is one of the most relatable characters in recent science fiction. 5/5 stars! Highly recommended for fans of both science fiction and action thrillers, both groups, as well as just about any adult audience will be enthralled by The Artifact 1 and 2!
I struggled from about halfway through this book when the story became more than fiction, kind of into the world of dreams and imagination. The concepts are not difficult to follow, but the secret base is difficult to accept as even plausible. If you are after an action book, this might make the grade. The concept started with a lot of promise, a crystal found in a pyramid with unexplainable origins, caught my attention. I felt the story could have spent more time in discovering what the crystal was and how it could be used. The action side of the story could have been left out with such focus, yes, I know that would have broken part of the story but for me it would have been more intriguing.
Yet again, the USA is portrayed as the devil looking after its own? I can't day I blame authors for depicting that state of affairs as the CIA does seem to have had its dark era over the last years. Still, a very intriguing story and seemingly quite probable as apocalyptic destructions go. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a thriller. Some of it was a bit predictable but in general a good yarn.
This was the greatest science fiction books that I have ever read. Not only was there massive amounts of action and suspense but a great cast of characters to go along with everything. I read this second book in three days, couldn't put it down. I recommend reading this to all that love science fiction and lots of action. Great read.
How I regret the many hours I spent reading the first and second The Artifact. The ending was a surprise alright, just not a good one. As a loyal American, I expect happy endings for America- not our CCP enemies.
A story I hope never comes true, especially not during the time frame of the story. Never would not have expected the problems that caused all the drama of this story. A new idea. This guy is good.
