House of Devils #3

City of Lies and Legends: A spellbinding dark fantasy series of danger, devotion and the fight to survive in a divided world

Rate this book
Three paths. One city of secrets. And a truth that could destroy them all…

The third heart-stopping chapter in the dark, addictive House of Devils series.

‘Best book boyfriend ever’ 5 ⭐ Reader Review

When Darkslayer Darien Cassel first took human Loren Calla under his wing, he’d made a promise to protect her from anything.

And now that she has fallen into a coma, every day a losing battle to return to life, he is determined to save her.

When he hears rumors of the one place in Terra that houses a secret that just might bring her back to him, he drops everything to try it, leaving behind the city he grew up in and the people he calls family.

His decision sets his best friend Maximus Reacher onto a road of his own?one no less dangerous than Darien’s as he unearths the secrets of his past, uncovering a multitude of lies and legends better left buried.

Meanwhile, in the historic city of Yveswich, Roman Devlin of the House of Black gets tangled up with a shapeshifting Selkie of the Riptide, a member of a rival Darkslaying house and a thorn in his side. Shay Cousens is a pickpocket with endless tricks up her sleeve?and if Roman isn’t careful, she might succeed at stealing both his wallet and his heart as they work together to find her missing sister.

Their path will lead them not just to Angelthene, but also into the dark secrets of the Phoenix Head Society?and the restorative body of water that has the power to cleave their world in two.

Loyalties are tested, and worlds collide in City of Lies and Legends, the third installment in the House of Devils series.

5 stars perfection ⭐️

I have not felt this way about a book in SO LONG. Hands down the best in the series.

Adult urban fantasy with a whole cast of characters and found family that develops as the books progress. We got new characters in this one and different chapters POVs. There was SO much happening and it was an absolute ride. I have never cared so much about every single character and plot point going on. The pacing was PERFECT. I am so glad these books are long because I could read thousands of pages of Kayla’s writing and never get bored.

I can’t wait for book 4. God tier series 😭❤️‍🔥

"She was his sun, ad if he didn't have her, he'd be swallowed by the dark."

This was my favorite book in the series so far. My GOD that was a RIDE... of emotions, of plot, of whiplash. I'm so glad I picked this series up.

I honestly don't know how much MORE I CAN TAKE!!! Darien continues to be everything. That man has now made it to #5 in my top 10 book boyfriends list and he is there to stay for the foreseeable future. He is SO emo sad boy!!!! I honestly am so genuinely scared for him and everyone else in the next book. Shit is going to hit the fan. Hell, shit has ALREADY hit the fan and we're just sitting here waiting in suspense for book 3.

We got introduced to lots of new characters in this book, and I love them all just as much as the rest. Roman Devlin, I have my eye on him. I fear he may top Darien for me eventually, but we will see.

I'm so scared for book 4. I'm going to be spiraling for the next 3-5 business days. This series has God Tier potential for me. Read it. That is all.... for now.

Kayla Edwards… I’m sending you my therapy bill because WTF?!!! The cliff hangers in this series never fail to rip my heart out and stomp on it repeatedly but in the best way. I don’t even know how to put into words how much I love these books and what this world and the characters within it mean to me. The third installment did NOT disappoint. I’m so emotionally invested at this point, I’m not the same person I was before picking up this series. Cue book hangover…..

As the third book in the series, City of Lies and Legends achieved exactly what it needed to to propel the story forward without falling victim to feeling like a filler novel — something I find happens a lot in long fantasy series.

The plot - after the second book ended on a heartbreaking cliffhanger with a lot of problems to solve this book takes you on a JOURNEY! A lot of questions get answered and a LOT of new ones form. After a certain something happens to one of our main characters in book two (don’t want to spoil anything) I was worried that the plot would drag on a bit in an effort to solve this problem, but that was not at all the case! Kayla brought in new POVs and characters with their own side plots that wove together BEAUTIFULLY with one another and the main overarching plot in the end. Multi pov fantasy novels are my absolute favorite but they are so hard to pull off and can sometimes come off as confusing and unnecessary, but the opposite can be said here. The world is heavily expanded upon in this book so the world building is heavy in the beginning but done so well. There isn’t a lot of action in the beginning which I was more than okay with considering how the end of book two left off. However when the action comes…. It’s NONSTOP, Kayla’s battle scenes are my favorite but also almost send me into cardiac arrest. From the 60% mark until the end I couldn’t take a full breath, these characters know no peace. I ATE IT UP. Also the little Easter eggs she plants throughout for what’s to come in the series is my FAVORITE.

This book is very character driven which I loved because I’m so emotionally attached to each and every one of them. This is one of the best found families I’ve ever read and you really feel their love and pain and heartache throughout the book.

Darien Cassel… where do I begin???!! My #1 book boyfriend by a landslide, this man. THIS MAN. Ugh my heart really hurt for him in this one. One thing Kayla does perfectly every time is her mental health and grief representation. You feel Darien’s grief like it’s your own and watching him move through it while battling his own trauma and addiction feels so real it brought me to tears on multiple occasions. This man will do anything for Loren and his love for her knows no bounds. It’s unrelenting, raw, powerful and so real. He has a lot of healing to do still but you see his strength so much in this book, I just need to see him start to love himself as much as he does his family!

Loren - girl….. oh this poor girl. Nobody has worse luck, talk about going THROUGH IT! Okay so this is the first book I’ve EVER read where the memory loss trope and the main couple being separated didn’t instantly turn me off and make me want to not finish reading….. so if that says anything. If Kayla Edwards stays true to anything it’s that magic ALWAYS has consequences. And what happened to Loren was valid and warranted and how it was handled made so much sense. There was so much else going on that what her and Darien went through didn’t overwhelm the story/drag out. I love their relationship so much and let me tell you…. The payoff in the end when they finally come together is SO WORTH IT! The spice is scrumptious.

Roman & Shay - stop I love them so much I can’t. Our two new characters and POVs absolutely slayed the house down I cannot wait to see where their relationship goes and how they grow individually and together. The forbidden romance in the next book is going to be everything. Roman is a broody shadow daddy with a filthy mouth and so much pain and trauma, I love him. Shay is firey and takes no shit. Her power is so intriguing, god bless anyone who underestimated her. The addition these two was so beautifully done and they made the overall plot so much higher stakes!

The rest of the devils - I literally love them all so much. Max is a cinnamon roll and I love his POV, you really learn so much more about him and his character motives in this book as he embarks on his journey to find his sister. Then we also get a few scenes from Travis and Malakai and OH MY GOD I NEED MORE! They are each so unique in their own way, like all the other POVs, though small, they each have a clear role and purpose to play and it’s just so exciting to learn more about them!

I could go on and on forever about the imprint this series and book has left on my soul. I NEED MORE PEOPLE TO BE AS OBSESSED AS ME!! 2025 cannot come soon enough, already counting down the days until book 4, I’m so scared for my babies!!

This book is for you if you like:
✔️urban fantasy
✔️found family
✔️multi pov
✔️characters you get emotionally attached to
✔️intricate world building
✔️the perfect amount of romance and plot
✔️elemental magic
✔️shadow daddies
✔️mental health rep
✔️battle scenes that put you on the edge of your seat (literally)
✔️forbidden love
✔️supernatural gangs
✔️touch her and you 💀

“Darien had been dangerous his whole life—there was no doubt about that. But as a man in love, he was lethal.”

the found family was elite in this book yall. every time i think i can’t love darien more, i’m proven wrong !! BRO THE WIDOW CHAPTER HAD ME IN SHOCK. NO WORDSSJSJJS. WHAT A ROMANTIC SIMP.

also help this is so specific but you know when something terrible happens to the fmc and the mc becomes an intolerant, crabby piece of shit to other ppl. I'M HAPPY TO SHARE HE IS STILL THE BEST PERSON EVERRR. so despite what happened at the end of book 2, it wasn’t miserable to read like past experiences i’ve had with other books/authors. this allowed us to explore other dynamics we don’t usually see.

it also had one of my favorite tropes ever and it was done so WELL !! I’VE NEVER HAD AN AUTHOR DO SUCH A GOOD JOB. THE PERFECT AMOUNT OF ANGST AND LONGING BUT ALSO GIVING US SWEET MOMENTS. CHEFS KISS. i’ve only read good ones on ao3 and not a published book lmao.

when i think i know this universe, i'm so so wrong bc this is much bigger than our handful of characters. i like how each book expands the universe even more.

“They call me ‘Shadowmaster’ for a reason.”

i was excited to meet roman (darien’s cousin) YALLLL. i didn’t really vibe with roman and shay's dynamic, it felt a little immature. at first it was nice to have a different dynamic where they were both antagonizing each other but turns out that's as far as it develops💀 the jump scare when i found out roman is 27 and shay is just almost 20. i like their characters individually more. like how roman is so protective of his younger brothers and how sly/sneaky shay is. her illusion abilities are so cool.

also this book was funny as heck. as always, malakai carried !! and the familiars are hilarious too. (when darien threw the rubber chicken too hard and it sizzled from hitting the protective force field💀 BYE HAHA)

i’m excited for book 4 !! especially with how it ended. thank you kayla for the arc !! this review is entirely my honest opinion ♡

TRUTH OR LIE, I am obsessed (obviously truth) ROMAN. SHAY. DARIEN. LOREN. The chokehold you guys have on me is actually insane. The way I sat there and devoured this big ass book in just a few days… I literally bedrotted the whole day straight reading it. There’s so much I wanna say but I physically can’t because I’m still in shock from beginning to end. Roman and Shay live inside my head rent free, and Darien and Loren… omg the way his fate is tied to hers, knowing she might not even make it, is actually killing me. And don’t even get me started on how the author keeps scaring me with Darien sacrificing himself for her 💔. That ending left me so messed up I NEED book 4 like right now, not tomorrow, not later, but now. If Roman doesn’t kill his dad and be with Shay, and if Darien and Loren don’t get their happy ending, I swear I will lose my mind.

"Together, girl and dog walked below galaxies, on and on into the dark, until that blue tree was so far behind her that it no longer provided a source of light. It was just her, Singer, and the stars."

The second name of this book could be INTENSE, because there was not a single moment of peace!!! Not one!!! It had me in a constant chokehold. Even worse, my most hated trope came into play and I was in even more pain.

As if we haven't had enough angst in book two, Kayla Edwards upped it to the max in this installment. It took so long for Loren to and then when she did, . AND THEN .

On a lighter note, we got sooo many PoVs and another romance to follow, the world got expanded through a second city and a few other locations, we learned a lot about the Well and how it was created as well as more about Loren's origins and abilities, some stuff about the Elementals became clearer, and the whole found family was together in one room!!!

That's so huge honestly, I hate having to wait for everyone to gradually meet and do things together, and yes, they do split up, but I don't feel like I waited ages to see them all together, if that makes sense. And everyone was included, not just characters we've been with since the beginning, but ones we've been introduced to in this book as well.

Romance wise, there was less of it in one department (Loren and Darien), for reasons that will become clear when you read the book, so I felt just as starved as they did, until they were finally back together.

We got to see Roman and Shay falling in love to balance it, though I can't say those two were as compelling as the main couple. Max and Dallas & and the other side couples were better.

I think I would've enjoyed Roman and Shay more if .

But to circle back to Darien and Loren, the romantic scenes we did get were top tier. He really would do anything for her and .

The ending was a horrible, horrible cliffhanger, and the most important thing was left unsolved!! How could you do that to poor ??? The whole storyline is giving me so much anxiety, I don't want anything like that to happen again.

LUCKILY book 4 is only 10ish days away...I WILL be counting!!

*Huge thank you to the author for an arc in exchange for my honest review*

The absolute chokehold this series has on me 😮‍💨

I mean this with all the love and respect in my heart, and as someone who genuinely enjoys this series, it reads like a REALLY well done CW show imo. It’s entertaining & bingeworthy, has easy to follow world building and lore, some really hot spice, and heavy romance. I LOVE it. Truly. I also cried 4 times so there’s that haha.

There’s just something so dang entertaining about Kayla’s writing style and storytelling that scratches my lil rat brain so good. Idk guys, I’m obsessed 💅🏻

P. S. Yes I’m still feral for Darien, but Roman might be my new fav cause 👀👀👀

City of Lies and Legends is the third instalment in the New-Adult Urban Fantasy House of Devils series by author Kayla Edwards. After being granted early access to read City of Lies and Legends I've found myself having to take a few days to sit on my thoughts and feelings on this explosive book before compiling them all into my review... because wow. Holy shit. It should not feel possible to be sitting here on a 5-star reading streak within a series and yet, here we are. Author Kayla Edwards continues to set out to impress with her immersive world-building and compelling narrative voice within her story telling. The pacing felt steady throughout which is no easy feat considering the sheer length of these books. Every plot, sub-plot and page count exists with a clear purpose as the story continues to tease and develop. At no point did I find the story lagging or containing a filler-like plot, and this just continues to display the commitment and genius mind of the author. I recommend the House of Devils series to all who will listen to me, and that will never change.

After that jaw-dropping cliff-hanger at the end of book two I have been anxiously awaiting to see where this story will go, and it's safe to say it's as heart-breaking and yet as fulfilling as you could imagine. My heart broke for our roguish and loveable main character Darien as he fights for the survival of the woman we watched him fall in-love with, Loren Calla. Loren's purpose within this instalment isn't something I'm going to spoil as it's very much one of those instances you need to read yourself to feel the full effect. But what I will say is that Loren and Darien's journey is filled with angst, pain, heartbreak and most importantly... love. The love that Loren and Darien share is what makes this story what it is. Watching these two once lonely and sad individuals find true love and contentment with one another is the driving force within the storyline... but that doesn't mean it gets to be easy. There were multiple occasions I had to put the book down and just think about what I had just read, as City of Lies and Legends cements itself in the most emotionally compelling instalment to date. Darien and Loren are so special to me, and I will gladly follow their journey through to the end.

When the author announced that we would be leaving the familiar world of Angelthene to expand and explore into the world of Yveswich and its inhabitants... I was intrigued. I wondered if this new settings would create a change in vibes and overall feel to the story, which it did in the best possible way. This new setting and cast of side characters offered a fresh outlook and a new narrative to follow which added to the strength of the vast plot being explored. I absolutely love Roman Devlin. I will admit that I was nervous about the introduction to his character as the older cousin to Darien Cassel and older brother to Travis Devlin. I was concerned that a character like Darien would be too difficult to follow and that Roman would either be too similar to Darien, or he would just exist in his shadow. I'm glad that my concerns have been appeased as Roman Devlin is a strong side-character with his own distinctive voice and characteristics. There are some similarities to be found between Roman and Darien that you would come to expect from family, but outside of this both characters stand firmly on their own. Roman's story is emotionally gripping and offers the reader a greater insight into his motivations and decisions. What is with the Slade men being so awful and terrifying? If you thought Randal was bad... wait until you meet his brother Don. His relationship build-up with Shay was everything, and I absolutely adored them. I love Shay's feisty nature and willingness to dish back everything Roman serves. Their banter was hilarious and their dynamic offered a much-needed reprieve to the heaviness to the main storyline. I loved watching the connections that brought everybody together, and I'm already desperate for book four after seeing where Roman and Shay leave things.

A special mention has to go to my beloved Dallas and Max. Can I just say how proud I am of these two? Their relationship progress was very much on the sidelines until we were introduced to their POV in City of Souls and Sinners. It was then we were introduced to a deeper insight into their relationship and the troubles they faced. We witnessed Dallas in particular as she struggled with her hesitancy and fear surrounding being loved by Max, and the growth that we see in City of Lies and Legends is so subtle and yet so apparent? I adore those two together so much, and it was everything to watch them seamlessly work together as a team throughout their purpose to the plot as they continue to grow and learn as a couple. Max and Dallas are severely underrated and under-appreciated, and I hope we continue to see them flourish throughout the good and the bad.

I told myself that I'd try my best to keep this review concise and short, but alas I have once again failed. This is what happens when you love a book too much and have far too many thoughts and feelings needing shared. City of Lies and Legends is the darkest and grittiest instalment to the House of Devils series. Author Kayla Edwards has seamlessly continued the story and the lore of the world into the third instalment of this five-planned book series, and I genuinely cannot wait to see what comes next. This series is an emotional rollercoaster that will force you to feel as many emotions as physically possible in one book, and at the end we say 'thank you' to the author for taking us on that journey. Yet another strong addition to my favourite Fantasy series of all-time, and I need as many people as possible to be jumping onto this one.

OMG MISS KAYLA EDWARDS!? WTF WAS THAT CLIFFHANGER!!

In this book you will get all the POV´s from the guys in third person perspective.

Loren you resilient little bad b! Absolutely loved her in this book (like every other character of the group), I also love how she is so strong mentally. Darien is definitely on my top ten bookboyfriends now. All the "touch her and you die" and "for you I would do anything" vibes, I ATE IT UP. I loved how he looked after her and was possessive without being overbearing. For everything he asked if she was okay with that, wanted that etc and you just know that he would lay the world at her feet if she wanted it.

I LOVED the group, they really gave me found family vibes in this book and it felt kinda cozy and so cute. Loved Max and Dallas in this one, they are so cute and I absolutely loved Shayla. The added romance side plot with two other characters besides Loren and Darien really drew me in and I loved that one as well and was rooting for them so much.

Plotwise this was everything I wanted from the third book. We get many great action scenes with high tension, but also those "found family vibes" scenes that feel cozy and kind of lovingly, you get a big scoop of romance with it (spicy scenes included) but we can also find character development in here and some backstories get added. The pacing is well done, it never feels too slow or too fast, I was fully invested in the story the whole time. Absolutely love the urban fantasy vibes and that new settings got added. It definitely feels high stake and I loved all the plot twists and turns. That cliffhanger at the ending tho wrecked me, so I can´t wait for the next book!

Overall it was amazing and I can´t wait to continue the series!

I will be back with a formal review tomorrow, I can’t form coherent sentences right now. But yeah 5 freaking 🌟

I am back.

First and foremost…THE CLIFFHANGER?!?!!!! Criminal I tell you, criminal!

I simply cannot stop thinking about this book and this series in general. This was perfect, all the different POVs, the plot twists. Kayla’s writing is something else I swear. You can feel every single emotion that these characters feel and it just makes you connect to them more!

This book did everything it needed to, especially with how book two ended. The journey that these characters had to go on was just so painful to read about and you just couldn’t help but hope that everything would turn out to be okay. While you had everything going on with the usual group of characters, we also got POVs from new characters and how Kayla is able to connect so many different plot lines should be studied cause it was absolutely amazing, I was hanging off every word. Even with so much going on, there’s no way that you can be lost or confused because it all just clicks and makes so much sense. Don’t even get me started on the little crumbs she drops in previous books that will pop back up in later books and you’re just like OMG NO WAY!!

The last 150 pages of this book, Put. Me. Through. It. I was looking around my room thinking I was being punk’d because surely there was no way this was all happening (it was happening don’t worry and I need therapy now because of it) I can only hope and pray that we get more answers in the next book but I just know we’re going to suffer a bit before we get them. But trust, I will starting that book the minute it drops because I need it!

Last point I need to make, Darien freaking Cassel. I love that man, that is all.

#20/40 reading all my 2025 must reads, almost half way!!💃🏻 This one qualifies as must read because this is a buddy read with a coworker. I am NOT excited. Book 2 PMO SO BAD. UGH.

Here we go....... ᴵ ᵍᵘᵉˢˢ

I…. have little to nothing nice to say about this book. If you enjoyed this book look away now.

There are two good things I can say:
1. Shay CARRIED this whole fat ass book on her back.
2. Loren was in a coma for 1/3 of the story.

I may do a more in depth review once the steam stops coming out of my ears.

That's how it feels to be back with this world and the characters.
This series is my life.
Found Family is written EXTRA BIG here. I can't put my feelings for all the characters into words because the word love is not enough. Kayla has created something incredible with this world that makes my heart beat faster every time. There is so much heart and passion in this book. This love of detail is breathtaking.
So many things happen here. It goes bam, bam, bam in one go. You want more, you get more! The story doesn't give you a breather.
Nerve wracking. Captivating. Explosive.
And so many emotions. It destroyed me. I need and want more!
Especially from Darien FUCKING Cassel.🔥
Best bookboyfriend ever.🤌🏼
I hope so much that these books will be translated into German.

“Who are they to tell us who we can and cannot love ?”

City of Lies and Legend starts right after the ending of book 2, in this story we’ll go to a new town to explore – Yveswich with a brand new set of characters that comes with their own POV as well!

In Angelthene, the bad boy is Darien but in Yveswich we have Roman aka Darien’s cousin, I have to admit there’s some resemblance between the two, they are a lot like each other than they realize – selfless, mysterious, lethal and hot!
I also like Roman’s own love line with the selkie, Shay – really enjoy seeing the tension and bickering which liven up the story to balance out the heart-breaking moments.

Darien and Loren is still my favorite couple from this series, they’ve been through a lot – their relationship gets tested again and again in here especially for Darien. My heart broke for him, I wish I could hug him….
I’m glad Darien’s family supported Darien regarding Loren’s situation, they all love her like one of their own!

There’s a couple of surprises, especially near the ending…. The stake is even higher and that HUGE cliff-hanger almost make me want to scream!
What’s that epilogue mean ??!!! I’m thinking the final boss is gonna make an appearance in the next book! I’m excited but I’m also not sure my heart will survive…..

Overall, this another great addition to the House of Devils series, I’m serious this series gets better and better with each book!
Great writing style, short chapters and loveable characters make this book so hard to put down.
I can’t believe I need to wait for another year to continue, but I’ll wait patiently and keep an eye out for it in 2025!

I received an advanced review copy for free from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Huge thank you to the author and publisher!

I feel like I’m in the minority here.

But when a book series is expanding the literal world, lore, magic system, villains, etc, I just couldn’t keep up with all of those additions AND more povs. It was so choppy and I kept getting whiplash and wishing I was with different characters in certain povs. While it felt fast paced at times, I really slogged through it.

I think I’m going to take a break from this series until it’s complete bc these cliffies are killing me.

I received an arc for an honest review.

Series of the year!!!
I'm so invested in the series and these characters, and I keep getting surprised with how well Kayla Edwards continues to write such a magnificent and insane world-building with an incredible plot and plot twists without it feeling dragged out or like a filler novel. I think Kayla Edwards has become one of my favorite authors, and I will gladly read anything she writes because she knows how to write a proper fantasy that never fails to make me feel emotionally invested and attached to every single character. I don't think I'm the same person I was before starting this series.
But let me tell you, it's been a journey to read this!!! There's constantly things going wrong and an unhealthy amount of suffering and pain. However, it was WORTH IT, especially towards the end, and the spice was delicious. Very tasteful and such a beautiful and heart-warming scene between Loren and Darien.

-Darien -

It's embarrassing how much control Darien has over me - AND THE LOVE AND ADMIRATION I have for him and how he is with Loren only grows stronger with each book. Obsessed doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about him. THE MAN THAT YOU ARE!
It's the small gestures, touches, and the way he calls her sweetheart, love, and baby that does it for me. If he called me sweetheart, I would fall in love with him right away. That's how much of an effect he has on me, and it makes me want to never settle for less. How is this man only fictional?! He is too perfect. Life is unfair.

"Even before tonight, even for weeks, months after I met you, I had to stop and ask myself if you were even real. I wondered what I did right in this lifetime of wrongs to deserve someone as perfect as you."

"I love everything as long as it involves you."

I just love him. I mean, how can you not?
And his growth! Can we talk about how he was thinking about their future and the things he was planning to do???!! This is what we want in a man in real life! He knows what he wants!!! He tries to give Loren space and let her figure out her feelings and memories after what happened at the end of book 2 (without giving spoilers), but at the same time, he can't keep his hands off her and is always watching her. Whenever she looks at him, he is already looking at her. THE WAY IS KEEPS WANTING TO CARRY HER AND OFFERS TO HOLD HER HAND. I'm dead-ass in love with Darien - not even joking or exaggerating.

The way Kayla Edwards can capture the emotions that come with grief, anxiety, and love in such a raw and genuine way. Darien and Loren really go through it, as always. I was holding my breath through most of the book. Darien's grief was so potent as grief is the most potent form of unconditional love, and it broke me because his feelings and trauma felt like they were my own. His battle with addiction and fear of losing Loren made me very emotional and sometimes cry. What a rollercoaster!

-Loren-

I can't think of anyone with more bad luck than her. She deserves the world, and I applaud her for her resilience and strength that she keeps on showing. She is a fighter - even if it isn't physical.
Loren is so real! I'm completely envious of her and the fact that Darien is THAT obsessed and head over heels for her.

"Everything this man did was insanely attractive. Was it weird of her to be jealous of a plastic spoon?"
REAL. I was actually laughing reading this because she was DROOLING OVER HIM and me too, girl.

-Roman and Shay-

They are two characters that we are introduced to in the third book. I was a bit reluctant at first, because I did not want to read a Darien and Loren love story 2.0. With that being said, I became instantly hooked and was always looking forward to their POVS. I did not expect to love the duo this much. They are my new obsession, and they did not disappoint in any aspect. I'm looking forward to following their relationship and growth as individuals and together. Roman and Shay are both very feisty and mysterious people. Roman is a grumpy shadow daddy, and Shay is a fierce and powerful woman who has always been underestimated, which makes her very intriguing and attractive in Roman eyes. The banter and even higher stakes, with their new addition to the series, made the plot and book even better.

Multi POV gave me life. It was so entertaining and made me even more eager to read and find out what was going on with the switch between different POVs and storylines happening. It was non-stop action and tension.

What a crazy cliffhanger to end the book with. And I’m supposed to wait until July when the next book comes out!!!????? Yeah, I don't think it's possible for me to wait that long, and it's not even the last book in the series!!!

To sum up how I feel about this book, here is a conversation I had with my cousin while I was reading:

Her: What is wrong with you?
Me, with my hand over my mouth and tears in my eyes: This book is killing me.
Her: Why don’t you stop reading it then?
Me: Well, I could ask you to stop breathing but I can’t because that’s physically impossible and it’s basically the SAME. THING.

No joke, I read this entire book with my hand either on my heart or over my mouth and when I tell you it broke me, I am not kidding. I cried real friggen tears. I laughed at all the perfectly timed one liners. I blushed and worried and wanted to throw my kindle across the room. I went through every single emotion possible and now I am tired. But oh my lanta, it was worth every minute.

Kayla (as always) slayed with the tension - literally every kind of tension you can imagine, it’s in this book. And not only did we get so much of our sweet baby devil Darien—who takes the definition of “rock bottom” to a new level and I swear to God, Kayla, I will riot if you don’t give this man a break—but we also got so many more characters and POV’s. I loved them all, but I didn’t expect to love Roman and Malakai as much as I do. And Shay is such a wonderful, integral addition. Honestly, part of me was worried that it would be hard to keep track of all the different yet intertwined storylines, but it really wasn’t.

And Loren—my GOD. I can’t even start because I’ll start crying again but please, for the love of God, hasn’t our girl been through enough?!

Honestly. It’s only March and I’m telling you, this will be the best book I’ve read all year.

I have died and gone to Dark slayer heaven where all of my cinnamon roll devils are surrounding me.

I've never liked delayed gratification but holy shit this book has made me LOVE it.

As we know, the last book left us on a goddamn cliff hanger and when Lies and Legends popped up on my tablet, you best believe I STOPPED MY ENTIRE LIFE AND READ THIS GINORMOUS BOOK IN 24 HOURS.

First off, we need to discuss my poor baby devil Darien. He is at rock bottom and his feelings are my feelings and I want to kill anyone who has ever hurt him. I just felt so bad for him practically the entire book (KAYLA I'M SIDE EYEING YOU). But again, delayed gratification.

Then poor Loren. This girl is on the damn struggle bus. My worst nightmares came true when she woke up. But I loved the fact that she woke up because of Darien's voice. UTTER PERFECTION.

And we have a few more POVs....ROMAN, MY OTHER CINNAMON ROLL DEVIL. And Shay. Their romance was absolutely over the top. The tension! The enemies and I hate you to I love you. Truth or lie?!?! This was just so amazing! Their relationship is one of my new favorites. They are SO FOR EACH OTHER. Saving and showing up for each other. Completely obsessed.

Then we have Travis Devlin's new romance. And I freaking tell you. I just can't get enough of him.

But LET'S DISCUSS THE FREAKING END. WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST READ?? ANOTHER DAMN CLIFF HANGER? DELAYED GRATIFICATION IS NOT MY FRIEND RIGHT NOW. WHEN'S THE NEXT ONE???

Infinity Stars/5!!!

Oh my goodness… I have no words. This book was everything I wanted and so much more! It was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint one bit!! This only solidified this series as one of my absolute favorites.

Sometimes the middle book in a long series is hard – it’s a transition from the first part of the story leading to the end, and it can be tough to keep the reader’s attention. Not this book. Not one bit. This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

I don’t want to give any spoilers, but the end of City of Souls and Sinners left readers on a pretty big cliff for our main characters, Darien and Loren. The first third of City of Lies and Legends really focuses on resolving that issue. In order to help Loren, Darien and several of the Devils travel to Yveswich, a city several hours away. The city is different than Angelthene, and we meet several new characters, including Shayla Cousens, a Darkslayer with unique magic, and Roman “Shadows” Devlin, Wolf of the Hollow and head of the House of Black, and Darien’s cousin. In this book, we get an amazing side story with Roman and Shay, who are investigating the disappearance of Shay’s sister. Meanwhile, the remaining Devils are trying to keep Angelthene and Hell’s Gate intact in Darien’s absence. These storylines all converge in an exciting and explosive conclusion that left me absolutely breathless.

This series is just so good! The writing is excellent, the pacing is great, especially considering how long these books are, but I did not feel bored at all. The multiple POV’s keep things interesting, and the story moves between the immediate plot and the overall arc for the series. There is just so much going on in these books – from history and lore, to political intrigue, competing Darkslaying houses, arcane magic, and some incredible romances that tie it all together. I think shifting the story to Yveswich for this book keeps things exciting, and the introduction of new characters and romances was wonderfully done. I was literally laughing out loud at some of the Roman and Shay chapters, which was an excellent balance to the emotionally tough chapters with Darien and Loren early in the book.

Overall, this book was fantastic and an excellent sequel in the House of Devils series. I am in absolutely in love with this series, and I am so happy to have had a chance to read an early copy of the book. Thank you so, so much to Kayla Edwards for the eARC of this amazing book!

“Darien had been dangerous his whole life—there was no doubt about that. But as a man in love, he was lethal.”

For the first time since they had come together, the seven devils were forced to split apart. With half of his found family left behind in Angelthene, Darien and the other half travel to Yveswitch hoping to find a way to bring Loren back to them. With more questions than answers and more enemies than they can count, this book takes us on such a wild journey full of twists, heartbreak, angst, separations, reunions and leaves us on another absolute cliffhanger. With even more character development and relationships to invest in, this book does not disappoint! Highly recommend immersing yourself in this world and seeing everyone get their happy ending…of course…right? 😅

City of Lies and Legends. One of my most anticipated reads this year. I want to say that I’m surprised how this book went but at the same time I’m not surprised? Having read CoGaM and CoSaS I knew I was in for a WILD ride and I enjoyed every second of it! Here are my spoiler-ish thoughts.

Once again I’m in my darkslayer era - back on my Darien bullshit. I am so addicted it’s sick. This is a five star series and each book just keeps getting better and better. Kayla is great at getting you back into this world and even though I reread book 2, I would have had no problems getting back into this storyline if I didn’t.

Setting: We left Angelthene and took a trip to Yveswich, a place just as dark and scary. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to live in this world. Unless I am the most bad ass powerful bitch and can kick anyone’s ass, I have 0% chance of making it out alive. 😂

Characters: We are still following the main couple Loren and Darien but we are introduced to new characters, relationships, and familiars and I was INVESTED in every POV. I was not bored once. The banter between the new couple was *chefs kiss*. Malakai was fucking hilarious. Bandit is my baby and my favorite familiar. I loved the progression with Loren in this story. I love that throughout this book, Loren’s amnesia stuck around. I love how Kayla took the time for Loren to go through this rather than fixing this problem so quickly in the beginning of the book. Darien, my main man, my poor baby still not catching a break and going THROUGH IT. I love the love he has for Loren —every time he calls her baby and makes sure she’s ok just makes me want to hug him. The most intimidating cinnamon roll devil ever. 💛🖤

Pacing/Plot: loved the pacing of the book. There were short chapters (HUGE PLUS) and it made it great when transitioning from one character’s story to another. There was a lot going on and that makes this book unputdownable. The plot is dark and as we get further into this story, I am becoming more afraid. I literally cannot imagine what we are in for given the events of what happened at the end. But shiiiiiiiii I need to PREPARE myself for book 4 because shit is gonna get DARK. No pun intended.

Romance: Yes I said this book was dark and it’s high stakes throughout, but Kayla gave us the romance we crave for. The banter and tension got me giggling like a damn fool. The spice in this book was HOT 🥵 Seriously where can I find my own shadow daddy?

Again, this series just keeps getting better and better and I cannot wait to see what’s to come!
I would like to thank Kayla for the e-ARC. You’re not only one of my favorite authors but you’re truly, truly amazing. Love you, girl. ❤️

City of Lies and Legends picks up shortly after the end of City of Souls and Sinners. From page one until the end, the action doesn’t stop. There’s always something happening, nothing was there as filler, nothing was unnecessary. It was tightly plotted and perfectly executed. There are more POV which I really enjoyed, but at the same time the story never strayed from the heart which is Darien and Loren, my favorite fictional couple to date. I really got my Darien fix from this book which I greatly enjoyed. I won’t say anything about Loren because again, spoilers.

I need to take a second to point out how unique this story and world is. The author surprised me so many times with this one. It is INSANE the amount of foreshadowing, thought, and creativity that goes into House of Devils, but especially this third book. Picking it up, I had no idea what to expect and I just kept getting surprised. But here’s the thing - the surprises make SENSE. They’re not pulled out of thin air like some authors will do. As soon as the surprise hits you can look back at all the dots Edwards laid out leading to that moment and wonder how you missed them. Nothing is forgotten, no plot holes, everything makes sense. This is my addiction .

An addition to this story that I found so fulfilling was Roman and his love interest. They both get POVs and a romantic subplot that kept me turning the pages. Even if the rest of the book wasn’t good (which thankfully was not the case here) I would’ve kept reading for these two. I LOVED them. I now miss them as much as Darien and Loren and I am literally dying for the fourth book. Dying I tell you!

Speaking of the fourth book, I have no idea where it’s going from here or how our beloved characters are going to get out of THAT….but I know I won’t be let down. The ending is crazy. Insane. I THREW MY BOOK (tablet actually because I got an e-copy).

Long review short, this book is a masterpiece. Plain and simple. If you enjoyed the first two you won’t be let down by this one. There’s more side character time, more Familiar time, so much banter and laugh out loud moments… this was a joy to read.

Kayla, thank you for letting me be an early reader. Please let me be one again next time I beg you.

Infinity stars to a book and series that’s going to live in my heart for probably ever. This is such a hidden gem, I feel blessed to have found these books.

Don’t miss this one! Pick it up the moment it’s out - you won’t regret it

Another fantastic five star book in this series. This was my most anticipated book of the year and it did not disappoint!

The pacing of this book is incredible- so many POVs, including new POVs, all of which were so well done. It’s action packed, but it is balanced out perfectly with non insane (but still important) plot. I loved the storylines throughout the book. You’re introduced to new settings and characters (who you’ll immediately love) that bring an entire new layer to this series. The relationships in the book (across so many characters) are so beautifully written. The familiars are still one of my favorite parts of this series - you meet some new ones in this book. As always, wonderful dialogue throughout.

This series stays the best urban fantasy I’ve ever read. The magic system and creatures are so thoughtful and the urban/modern setting/plot doesn’t feel forced at all. World building is seamlessly added- it’s not a huge info dump. You learn as you go organically and I love that - so hard to do. You are immediately sucked into the world to the point you forget you’re not actually there.

I absolutely love the new characters we were introduced to in this book. I’m already itching for book four especially after that ending. There are so many badass moments in this book both for new characters and old. I enjoyed every second of this book (even the heart wrenching ones).

Once again, I couldn’t put this book down and stayed up until 3 AM reading. It’s binge worthy just like the previous two. It is my favorite of the series so far. 10/10 will always recommend.

In this third installment of the House of Devils series, @kaylaedwardsauthor takes us on an exhilarating emotional roller coaster in the best way possible. Reading these books is like watching a movie… when I say I was never lost despite this being an urban fantasy. I was along for the ride with these characters and enjoyed every single moment. One thing I love about Kayla’s writing is that nothing that happens is too convenient. We literally hurt and feel alongside these characters which delivers the best slow burn. This is one of my favorite series, by a long shot.

In this story, we meet some new characters + a new city. The way every single character has DEPTH and UNIQUENESS is phenomenal. Found family, slow burn, forbidden romance, spice, a dog, secret societies… Kayla delivers everything you could want in an urban fantasy. I have RARELY come across a series where every single book is infinite stars. Run, don’t walk, and read City of Lies and Legends.

First I need to start off by thanking the queen herself for sending me an arc copy of this book!! I have been obsessed with this series from day one and to be accepted was an absolute HONOUR AND PRIVILEGE! I’m so sorry it took me so long to read it, exams kicked my ass but this was the bright light at the end of the tunnel! (Pro tip, do NOT get a masters).

Now for my review…

KAYLA. EDWARDS. HOW. DARE. YOU.
This book was incredible! I LOVE how you give so many characters the chance to provide perspective to the story. With 3 separate storylines happening at once, it is super easy to be overwhelmed and confused but you structure it so well that I have never experienced any frustration… because of that at least… I DID get frustrated every time you would switch between plot lines JUST AS IT WAS GETTING GOOD— but then the next one would get good too and I’d be like…👀… I shall never question you again my liege 🙇🏻‍♀️

ROMAN AND SHAY. WOW. I LOVE these characters! I was worried about adding even more people into the mix, but it was effortless and they STOLE MY HEART with their individual struggles and their collective journey. Their stories apart broke my heart but you mended it back together with their amazing dynamic. Roman is very much like Darien, selfless and protective when it comes to those he loves (Pax omg 😭❤️Travis too)— he deserves SO MUCH better and I hope we get to see that happen in the next book! Shay is in the same boat (pun intended cuz House of Blue.. get it?… right right) while she fights to find her sister after she disappears, in order for them to finally get away from the hell they experience with their mother. Her struggles to do so at any cost (even piss off someone like Roman 😉) and the story that unravels regarding her magic along the way was truly incredible. Them two together is absolute 🔥 and how you ended it was 😭 so I REALLY can’t wait for the next book.

DARIEN AND LOREN. UGH. I will not say too much about this storyline— wanna keep those spoilers locked down. What I will say is that Darien is incredible as always ❤️❤️. Truly fighting tooth and nail (I hope that’s actually the correct saying… yikes) for Loren in any and every way he can. His selflessness knows ABSOLUTELY NO BOUNDS throughout the book— what he puts himself through to keep her safe is indescribable. I will love their love forever and ever. AY MEN.

Something I would love to see more of in the next book is Max and Dallas’ story! I need more of their love, their dynamic, their development! Please please please!

Also, if Pax could develop the STRONGEST AND MOST POWERFUL MAGIC EVER AND SHOW OLD DADDIO THE PROVERBIAL DOOR THAT WOULD BE SICK TIGHT FIRE BLESSED.

Once again, this absolute CHONK of a book is worth every single page, paragraph, sentence, word, & letter. I can’t wait for the next one! (No seriously, I can’t wait… is it coming out soon? I need to know I’m going to be okay…).

“Beware the girl you love. Sometimes the strongest of us are broken by the people we least expect.”

Holy shit.

I don't know how Kayla does it but each book keeps getting better and better. Thank you to the author for gifting me with an eARC, this was one of my most anticipated releases of 2024.

Happy to say it didn't break the 5-star streak it's predecessors earned.

I was hooked from start to finish and took my sweet time to devour every page. City of Lies and Legends pushes the story to the next level and the stakes keep getting higher.

It was intense and packed with action. It was extremely emotional and filled with angst. It had a stellar cast of characters who remind me of why I love the found family trope so much.

Honestly I'm still reeling from the book but I hope this review will do it justice.

I am more attached to these characters than I ever was (I mean I loved them but did not expect to love them even more?). Kayla did a splendid job at fleshing out both old and new characters, I was invested in every single one of them including minor characters.

I must say in terms of the romance, I think it was handled with given the events that have happened and the rise of a new ship made up for when the other couples had to deal with some serious situations, so we still got a good dose of romance. Speaking of this new couple, I am OBSESSED!! They're everything and they're serving forbidden romance/star-crossed lovers in their own twisted way.

Although I didn't have time to reread book 1 and 2, but I managed to slowly pick up on what happened before I'm COLAL and it was spread out evenly in the book so it didn't feel like an info-dump or long recollections of past events that didn't feel natural.

The plot keeps getting better and although it's getting more complex and darker but I'm fully on board. I'm always in awe of how intricate the world-building and the lore is and how the author manages to weave in more without it feeling repetitive.

I think a certain trope relating to a certain character (which I'm usually not a fan of) was handled realistically and it made sense for it to happen to that character because of what happened to them towards the end of book 2. Actions have consequences and what I appreciate about the author is she allows the characters to deal with different consequences because they won't always be able to get away from it without repercussions.

You will be stressed. You will cry. You will laugh. But most of all, you will be throughly entertained while this book will also shred your nerves like it did mine.

I will count the days until I get my hands on the fourth book. House of Devils is certainly joining my list of all-time favorite series.
