A simple life of solitude in the mountains of the Shattered Peaks. A roaring fire in his hearth, and a bottle of hooch in his hand. The sound of his guitar, and blankets of snow to muffle his lamenting songs of longing and regret.
After barely escaping death, these simple distractions were all Nosstam wanted—and far more than he thought he deserved. But when a foreigner on a ritualistic pilgrimage to the top of a volcano inadvertently crosses his path, Noss is forced to reckon with how far he'll go to help a stranger while facing a past he'd rather leave forgotten.
Can he find redemption for himself and a kindred spirit on this perilous journey, or will the flames of Embercrown consume them both?
Jake has been interested in creative storytelling since he was in elementary school, when he wrote and drew his own comic books and sold them to his peers on the playground for a quarter a pop. He's always been fascinated with fantasy in any medium, and these two loves inspired him to enter and win an online short-story contest in college. After working as a journalist for a decade and refining his worldbuilding chops through game mastering tabletop roleplaying games, Jake decided to begin publishing his creative writing and finally get his work out to the public. Jake lives in southern Wisconsin with his wife and four children.
I truly enjoyed this. The characters are great and even in the limited pages you get to see some character development! I love the father-daughter/big brother-little sister dynamic that was portrayed. A story this short does have to get to the point pretty quickly but the author did it in a flawless way that had you rooting for the duo to succeed! I'm excited to see what else this author publishes.
