Christopher Moeller
103 books7 followersChristopher Moeller is an American writer and painter, specializing in fully painted graphic novels. Moeller's signature creation is the Iron Empires science-fiction universe, comprising three main fully painted graphic novels Faith Conquers, Sheva's War and Void. In 2006, an Iron Empires role-playing game was published, called Burning Empires.
His professional debut was in 1991, writing and painting Innovation Comic's Rocketman: King of the Rocketmen. This was followed by a run on the adaptation of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, also from Innovation, for which he provided artwork and a number of cover illustrations.
Moeller moved to Dark Horse Comics in 1994, writing and painting the first of his Iron Empires graphic novels, Faith Conquers, as well as the short story "The Passage" in Dark Horse Presents #79-81. He illustrated Andrew Vachss' short story "Treatment", included in Vachss' 2002 graphics-adapted collection Hard Looks. He also illustrated covers for both James Bond and Star Wars, as well as an extended series of covers for the Vertigo monthly title Lucifer.
In 1998, Moeller wrote and painted his second Iron Empires graphic novel, Sheva's War, for the short-lived Science Fiction imprint of DC Comics, Helix. That was followed by a run of covers for DC's Batman monthly comic book Shadow of the Bat. In 2000, he wrote and painted the graphic novel JLA: A League of One and followed with JLA Classified: Cold Steel in 2005. In 2013, Moeller successfully crowdfunded the publication of Iron Empires: Void, his third graphic novel in the series.
He currently lives in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

A fun Wonder Woman story backed up by an interesting yet ultimately confusing sci-fi tale about the JLA piloting mech units. Good bang for your buck if you get the two together in this edition, but the first story is really all you need.
A League of One: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
In this first story, Wonder Woman knows she's the only one who can save the world from a reawakened dragon, so she's gotta take out the members of the Justice League so they don't get in the way. It's a nice, simple story brought to life by gorgeous paintings. I loved studying these pages and just absorbing all the details. Beautifully rendered in such a way that you get this gorgeous fantasy story while still making it believable that the JLA are involved.
The gnomes are delightful, as are WW's two helpers. The colours are gorgeous, and the story is told well. A fun DC fantasy story.
Cold Steel: ⭐⭐
Generally terrible.
I liked it at first - beautiful artwork, and strange looking alien creatures. But as the story progressed it became increasingly difficult to hold the thread of what was happening and by the end I had no idea what had transpired.
A lot of work put into the mech designs for them to not really see a lot of logical action, and there was no clear reason they played such a role. It felt forced and as a consequence the story suffered.
Still gorgeous art, and I'd happily flick through just to marvel over the colours, but the story leaves a lot to be desired.

The JLA: A League Of One is a beautiful work of art by Christopher Moeller and is highly recommended. What sorrows me is that this new “deluxe” edition is a stark downgrade compared to the previously released older hardcover and softcover editions from 2000 and 2015. The previous editions have deep colours and glossy paper, which make Christopher Moeller’s artwork shine and appear much sharper to the eye with more contrast. The pages of the new deluxe edition feel flat, with shallow colours, low contrast and matte paper. Furthermore it riddles me why the original artwork that is included as a bonus sketchbook has blue/purple colours in the new deluxe edition while the sketched artwork had brown grey colours in the original collected editions. Another disappointment. On top of that, bonus covers have been downsized in the deluxe editions compared to the original collected editions, so they are bigger in the original editions. I can’t understand why one would do that.
That’s why I give the new “deluxe” edition (which it is not) only 1 star (despite the fantastic work by Christopher Moeller). This deluxe edition is a real disappointment and I recommend sticking with (or finding one of) the older editions.
