I moved to Pine Haven to get away from the noise, the pressure, and my painfully boring ex. I didn’t expect to be flattened—literally—by a man built like a Greek god with the coordination of a baby deer.
Our meet-cute? More like a meet-crash. He tripped over his own feet and landed in my lap at the park, nearly face-planting in my pasta salad.
I thought that would be the end of it, but then he started showing up. At the bakery. On my morning walks. Hovering like he wanted to say something but forgot how words work. His name’s Mason, and he’s gorgeous, growly, and clearly keeping a secret.
It doesn’t take long to figure out what it is. The heightened senses, the golden eyes, the whole accidentally-shifted-in-public thing kind of gave it away.
Turns out Mason’s a werewolf. And somehow, despite the fact that he can’t flirt to save his life, he’s got me wrapped around one very large paw.
He thinks he’s too much—too intense, too dangerous, too... wolf. But I’ve already fallen for him. Claws, awkward silences, full moons and all.
Mason and Julian are cute together and I enjoyed the first part of the book. However, there’s zero continuity between this book and the first, and there are actually glaringly huge contradictions between them, which really made it hard to finish this one. I kept getting yanked out of the story when this contradicted book one or outright ignored things that are supposedly part of the world from book one. I basically skimmed the last 1/3 of this story because I just couldn’t get back into it but was curious about the big, bad, scary side of Mason. Meh.
All fine and good, but I couldn't find where the books are connected in any way. I thought I was moving from one book in a connected series to another. Normally that wouldn't be a big deal at all. I don't mind unconnected worlds in certain kinds of series. I had issues with this one.
Now, back to Mason, mentioned above. There's also a Mason in Swipe Right on the Alpha: MM Shifter Romance, who is Aiden's best friend and roommate. This particular Mason is a human, and most definitely not a werewolf.
I was already confused by the blurb, and was thinking, "Mason isn't a werewolf," but apparently he is, only it's a DIFFERENT Mason.
I know authors reuse names all the time, and I almost never have problems with that because those books are usually spread out. That's not the case with this one. It's literally from one book to the next.
That's not even the main reason I'm DNFing this. I'm DNFing it because it started getting a bit silly with Mason and his clumsiness.
I enjoyed the first book, but it's highly unlikely that I'll be reading the third.

So, usually when an author says their series is made up of stand-alone novels, the novels still either take place in the same place or follow the same theme. What confused me about this book in comparison to its predecessor is that while it's true that in both books a werewolf finds their human mate, a common theme, the books use different werewolf lore. (Also, it's really weird to write a book with interesting pack politics and not follow up on them at all. It felt like there were possibilities for more books involving that pack and the humans introduced to them through Aiden, and the author seemingly abandoned those fun side characters.) First book: world contains various supernatural species, not just werewolves; there's no indication that werewolves are anything other than born that way; the werewolf MC is physically intense and often partially shifts due to intense emotions during intimacy but is able to hold back, and there isn't any knotting; werewolves in generally can either shift partially or entirely at will, and although there's a strong inclination to shift during a full moon, they can resist; and the mating ceremony involves a lot of magic and ritual in addition to the mating bite during sex. Second book: there are two species in the world: humans and werewolves; werewolves are either born or turned, and turning is a dangerous and painful process that isn't always successful; the werewolf MC is physically intense but unlike the MC in the first book, he's seemingly unable to hold back his partial shift during sex, and he knots his mate every time; werewolves in general seem to be able to shift into full wolf form at will, but the only times the MC partially shifts is during sex, which seems to be involuntary while in the first book, there is an important scene where the pack's inner circle are talking to their enemies, and all of them are partially shifted; werewolves are basically forced to shift during the full moon, and while they can shift back after that first shift and run, they often prefer not to because it feels so good; and while there's barely a mention of werewolf bonding ceremony, it's compared to a human wedding, and since there aren't any witches in this book, I can't imagine a mating ceremony being all that much different than a human wedding when there aren't magic rituals involved or even a claiming bite (other than between werewolves) because biting would turn a human. All that aside, I liked the story, especially since I've never seen a werewolf portrayed with such a dichotomy of dominance and self-loathing before. Although, one thing that really annoyed me about this book is that the werewolf MC in this book is named Mason, which just happens to be the name of a human secondary character is the first book. Like, how do you not notice you used the same name twice in a series?
Cute fluff read. I was a little disappointed to realize that this Mason wasn’t the same as the Mason from the first book in the series. Also that this wasn’t a standalone story in the same universe. I like the pack politics and genera lore from the first book and would’ve liked more stories related to that. But this was a cute fast read about a human that falls in love with a werewolf that has spice.
Angsty in the most boring way. (Stereotypical “I’m too strong and my wolf is too wild - I’ll hurt you.” “No you won’t, I trust you.” “No! I have to stay away for your own good.” …. You get the point :p).
