Bound by blood and prophecy, a prince must master his powers before they destroy him, while his imprisoned sister's doomed rebellion may hold the key to the world’s salvation. Together, they are the last hope to free God... before the coming darkness consumes everything.

For centuries, the world has waited for the Gray Messiah to liberate God from imprisonment in the Vortex. With an ancient evil awakening to threaten all, the souls of the dead stirring in the forgotten dark, and many of the empire’s provinces in near-rebellion, the world desperately needs its celebrated savior.

Prince Azaleum is the Gray Messiah, but on the day he is meant to save the world, his powers awaken in a storm of fire that leaves hundreds dead and an empire in ashes. Branded a murderer and a traitor by the very people he was meant to save, Azaleum vanishes into exile, consumed by guilt and haunted by the legacy he can no longer bear. Driven by a desperate need to find his long-lost sister, he searches for redemption and the secret of their combined powers, the strength prophesied to liberate God.

Iva, Azaleum’s forgotten twin, survived twenty years of death, misery and suffering on a prison island. When her powers as a Gray Messiah manifest, a mysterious young man entices her with the possibility of change and freedom from her tortured existence. When an ancient evil awakens beneath the island, and the prison colony turns into the center of a primordial war, she becomes the leader of a rebellion doomed to fail.

Gray Messiah is the epic beginning of a saga exploring the weight of choices and the triumph of human will over any odds.
Contains mild sexual content, violence, and mature themes.

Gray Messiah by F.J.R. Halbertsma offers a truly immersive epic fantasy experience, blending rich worldbuilding with a compelling story about prophecy, rebellion, and the power of choice. The story follows twins Iva and Azaleum, whose intertwined destinies create a narrative that is as intimate as it is grand in scope. I loved how the book explores the tension between fate and free will, making every decision feel weighty and real.
The writing is atmospheric and evocative, pulling you deep into a world where nothing is quite what it seems. I was especially drawn to the character development—both Iva and Azaleum are multi-dimensional, and watching them struggle, grow, and challenge their destinies kept me turning the pages late into the night. The dual POV adds depth and lets you see the various sides of their world and the choices they must make.
While Gray Messiah deals with mature themes and doesn’t shy away from the darker sides of humanity, it does so with poetic prose and a sense of purpose, never feeling gratuitous. The emotional complexity and philosophical undertones made this stand out from other fantasy novels I’ve read recently.
Overall, I highly recommend Gray Messiah to anyone who loves epic fantasy with deep characters, moral complexity, and lush writing. It’s a gripping story that lingers long after the final page—a fantastic start to a new saga! Gray Messiah by F.J.R. Gray Messiah hooked me right from the start with its setup: twins separated by fate and prophecy, both carrying the power to either save or destroy their world. There’s royal drama, rebellion, ancient magic, and a mysterious force called the Vortex. Basically, everything I want in an epic fantasy. You can really feel the love and effort that went into creating this world.

The book’s written entirely in the first person, which I didn’t think I’d like, but it actually works! It gives the story a more emotional, personal touch. We get two points of view, Azaleum and Iva, and I found Azaleum’s chapters the most engaging. His inner struggles and guilt hit harder, while Iva’s rebellion storyline just didn’t pull me in the same way.

The world-building is great: rich, detailed, and clearly thought through. You can sense a lot of history and magic beneath the surface. The magic system itself is still a bit mysterious, but I didn’t mind that too much. It made me curious to see where it’ll go next. There are definite Sanderson vibes, but the author gives it their own twist.

Now for the not-so-great bits: the pacing. It’s uneven. Some parts drag, and others rush ahead so quickly I wasn’t sure how we got there. The ending, especially, felt abrupt. It doesn’t really wrap things up or set up a cliffhanger. It just kind of... stops, ending on a funeral scene full of exposition wasn’t exactly satisfying.

The romance subplot also didn’t do much for me. It feels like it’s there just because every fantasy story “needs” one. There’s no real spark or chemistry, and it doesn’t add much to the plot. Honestly, the story would’ve been fine, maybe even better, without it.

That said, what really stood out for me were the themes. The book digs into guilt, redemption, and the tug-of-war between fate and free will. Both twins wrestle with their pasts and the weight of their choices, and those quieter, more emotional moments are where the story shines. You can tell the author really cares about exploring what it means to carry power and responsibility.

All in all, Gray Messiah is an ambitious and heartfelt debut. It’s got a strong concept, good emotional depth, and a world that feels alive, even if the pacing and ending stumble a bit. I think newer fantasy readers will really enjoy it, and even though it didn’t fully click for me, I’m still curious to see what happens next.

Verdict: A creative, sincere fantasy story that doesn’t quite stick the landing, but definitely has potential.

Many thanks to the author for kindly providing a free eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Gray Messiah

Meet F.J.R. Halbertsma, writing his first book and what a gem it is. Gray Messiah is fast paced,  but the world building is good, character development is deep, you wil see the scènes in your mind, and you'll feel the emotions and struggles the characters go trough and feel them grow thanks to 1st person POV storytelling.

In endless time and limitless space, the One dreamed of life and imagined twelve descendants. In their images we humans  were created. Twelve guides,  twelve country’s honering them, each one mirroring a planet, each with their own blessing….giving rise to the sacred words of wisdom and the basis of all “the Celestial Order” : The planets above, guide us below.

One prophecy,  God was imprisoned trapped in the Vortex a savior will rise and free him the Gray Messiah. This was told for 400 years, Azaleum prince and the one everyone waited for for generations the Gray Messiah. On the day that he woulld become the vessel of the Sun he knew he needed to die te be reborn, this is what he knew this was what we was told. But is this what he himself wanted? When he meets Atma who speeks in riddles and is cloaked in mysterie his world gets turned up side down. After his power runs amok, and he fled with guilt. He sets on a journey for uncovering the truth of the prophecy and the real history of the world, seems he was not the first Gray Messiah and he needs to learn to use the power he has before it destroice him and everything he knows …and loves.

And seems he may be not the only one, there is another a twin a sister,  separated at birth and never revealed. One raised to full fill his destiney and the other raised on a prisoner island where a rebelion is growing. Can Aza uncover the truth, can he control his power and redeem himself and find peace in what happend on that fatefull day and will he find his sister Iva. What evil is lurking in the shadows.

Read the Gray Messiah and live the emotions, visit  the places, use the magic, fight the battles,  uncover the secrets and plots and eventually… become the Gray Messiah…

This is the first Epic Fantasy installment of the first trilogy of three trilogies, and what a way to set the bar high for the other eight books to come. Will they reunite an broken Empire and unite the people. Will they succeed returning God, can they heal the Vortex the centuries old scar upon the land, a remnant of an ancient war. And can they save their world from an ancient Evil. Follow F.J.R. Halbertsma and find out, you wont be disapointed.

This book surprised me in ways I didn’t expect. The “slaves” immediately took my mind to some moments in history, especially the way black people were once seen as less than human. The idea of “keeping bloodlines pure” brought my mind straight to nazism and its obsession with control and “perfection”. It’s painful, but it makes sense. Glimpses of history are everywhere in this story and thorough the fantasy setting, it becomes easier to understand it and think about how humanity repeats it’s mistakes.

The detail about men in Híd having to cover their heads was so interesting. It’s an unusual reversal of what we know in most religions today, where women are the ones who must do it. The book is full of little cultural pieces borrowed from history and reshaped into something new.

The story follows Azaleum and Iva, two twins living separate lives. Each of them has their own people and their own world, but you can tell their stories are meant to cross. The thought of their reunion never really left me, because I knew that the prophecy depends on it.

I also really liked Toantu, the historian. He questions faith, rules and divine law when everyone else just accepts them. He’s the voice of reason in a world that doesn’t want to listen.

It was really heartwarming how Azaleum constantly thinks of his sister, even though they’ve never met. That kind of sibling love always gets to me – quiet, loyal and strong in a way that hurts a little.

And let’s talk a little about the romance in the book. Azaleum and Atma’s relationship is forbidden, but also part of his growth, because he starts following his heart instead of living by old and imposed rules that doesn’t make sense anymore.

There’s so much happening in this book and the rhythm never slows down. Every chapter brings something new and exciting and I never felt bored. The epilogue was so clever, it tied everything together and gave answers I didn’t even know I wanted. It’s a story full of meaning, emotion and reflection. Complex, thoughtful and deeply engaging. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. This review reflects my honest thoughts.

If you’re looking for a new author whose twists and turns will keep you reading till the wee hours of the morning, look no further than F.J.R. Halbertsma. In his first book, Gray Messiah, he has crafted an intricate world of vibrant colors, cultures, and prophecies. The interstitial quotes from the in-universe histories and religious texts make for such a rich reading experience, layering depth and history into every chapter.

The story follows twins Azaleum and Iva, who were separated at birth—Azaleum raised in a life of privilege and prophesied to save the world, while his sister has grown up on an island prison, hardened by the day to day fight for survival. Their lives are upended and sent spiraling toward an epic quest that challenges not just their beliefs, but the very nature of destiny itself.

What struck me most was how Gray Messiah refuses to take the easy route. Halbertsma doesn’t just build a fantasy world—he constructs a living, breathing civilization full of political unrest, spiritual tension, and moral ambiguity. Every character, from the twins to the supporting cast, carries emotional weight and a sense of purpose. The prose is lush and cinematic, but also philosophical, asking readers to reflect on fate, faith, and the cost of salvation.

This is a story that lingers. Even after closing the book, I found myself mulling over its themes and imagining what might come next for these characters. As well as feeling the loss of characters I had come to love.

For readers who enjoy complex worldbuilding, layered characters, and epic fantasy that challenges as much as it entertains, Gray Messiah is a must-read debut.

I can’t wait to see what Halbertsma does next—this is just the beginning of something truly special.

A gripping high stakes, epic fantasy saga where gods are real, their powers seeping into the world, and humans struggle and strive for their own goals and beliefs. We, the readers, experience magic and large scale conflicts through the intimate lens of individuals and their individual pains.

Narrated in the immediate first person, present tense, this story tells the tale of twins fated to change the world, and their very different yet converging journeys to discover their powers, allies and the many dangers that lay ahead of them. As Iva and Azaleum grow to fulfill their destiny they discover that what they knew about the world isn't entirely true. A global, possibly cosmic mystery unfolds just as war threatens the lands, a strange conspiracy takes hold and an enemy no one expected appears. Characters are well rounded, flawed, human *and* some have wild powers on top.

This book is fast paced and well written with not a word too many or too few. F.J.R. Halbertsma leans into emotions, letting us *feel* the world, the hardship, the pain, the sacrifice and loss but also the hope and determination each of the characters go through. The narration alternates mainly between the two twins, Iva and Azaleum, but occasionally we also get additional perspectives that help us see specific events. While I'm normally not a big fan of first person narrative, nor of present tense narration, it *does* work sometimes, and this is definitely one of those times.

I received this book as an ARC after stumbling upon the author's post on social media by chance, and am very glad I did. I'm very much looking forward to the sequels.

Absolutely worth reading!

ARC review of Gray Messiah by debut author F.J.R Halbertsma is the first book of an epic fantasy series that hooked me from the first chapter. It follows the twins Azaleum and Iva, their very different lives and struggles and emotional growth as their paths converge into one. It's told in a close first person, present tense narration that submerges you in a fast paced rollercoaster of a plot with twists and turns that leaves you in both bliss and frustration.
The Character development, the story driven worldbuilding, both the soft and hard magic systems, the conflicts and truly distinct character voices kept me reading well past my intended bus stops and bedtimes.
As I finished it, I both sighed with relief for the much needed immersive break (two hours had passed and my morning coffee was sitting untouched on my desk) but also made me want to read the next book instantly.
I want to “hear” my favorite characters again. Aside from the main fmc and mmc, we have Atilla, Atma and Ariadne. Three characters that really added that little extra cherry to my reading experience. I was going to post some of my favorite quotes, but decided you should read it and hear their voices yourself.

Overall, it's one of my favorite books this year and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good fantasy with deep lore.

Last but not least. Thank you to F.J.R Halbertsma for letting me read it before launch. I'll be buying a physical copy once released!

ARC REVIEW - GRAY MESSIAH - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gray Messiah is the first book in a new epic fantasy saga by F.J.R. Halbertsma that will have you hooked from the first chapter!

This story has so much ellaborate world-building and history that you are immediately immersed in the realms. It follows the story of twins, Iva and Azaleum, who start as strangers but find that their destinies are intertwined in a way that neither of them expected. There are themes of civil unrest, political discord, religion, rebellion, and moral conflict, to name a few.

This book is not for the faint of heart due to the intense themes and the deep, philosophical questions that this story poses and begs you to debate. It will make you question the world that Friso has built, constantly spinning theories in your head -- even after the last page -- while also allowing you to look at our world through a new lense, which is something so unique and fantastic to read.

The emotional depth, struggle, and growth of these characters are beautiful and heart-wrenching to read. He has brought these characters to life in a way that is inspiring!

Thank you, Friso, for reaching out and giving me this amazing opportunity to ARC read your book! I cannot wait to see where this story goes!

E- ARC provided by the author

Gray Messiah is an epic fantasy that immerses readers in a richly constructed world, where complex worldbuilding and intricate character development take center stage. The narrative unfolds through multiple points of view, each offering a unique lens into the story's unfolding drama.

One of the standout aspects of this novel is the depth of character growth. The author doesn't shy away from challenging their characters, putting them through trials that test their limits and forge their development. This commitment to character evolution adds a layer of emotional resonance to the story, making the journey feel both personal and impactful.

While the worldbuilding is detailed and at times dense, it never feels out of place. Instead, it enhances the storyline, providing a backdrop that is as intricate and layered as the characters themselves. The complexity of the world adds to the epic scope of the narrative, drawing readers in deeper.

In summary, Gray Messiah is a compelling epic fantasy that balances intricate worldbuilding with profound character development. It's a journey that challenges its characters and its readers, offering a narrative that is both expansive and intimate.

This is a powerful tale of prophecy, corruption, betrayal and power.
An imprisoned girl rallying a rebellion, a haunted prince on the run, both connected by fate and shaped by suffering.
The plot hooks you right away seeing Azaleum and Iva's struggles as they fight to survive. It explores their raw emotions and pain, the blurred lines between duty and sacrifice, and how their paths are being driven by choice or influence.
They are both burdened with responsibility they never asked for, tackling their growing powers, channelling guilt, and trying to understand their roles in the Gray Messiah prophecy.
It's an immersive world with unique magic, visions and dream realms, mystical animal companions, and monsters beyond the vortex.
It's also a tragic world of deception, influence, and twisted truths setting the chosen ones on dangerous paths.
All the characters you meet have a traumatic past or secret, it gives them incredible depth and makes it so intriguing to uncover their motivations and figure out who to trust.
The vivid ending sets the scene for more tragedy, increases the stakes, and begins to unwrap the mysteries of their fate.
Excited for the next book in this dark and layered fantasy series.

From the very first pages, I found that the different types of eye color, magics, philosophies, etc. among the characters all contributed to making the story feel epic, textured, and visually interesting. I went into it not knowing much about what to expect, and wow was I surprised when the main character lit the entire audience chamber on fire (on accident)! Dealing with his guilt and his magic after that made for an interesting character arc, but I was most drawn in by his love for the surprise twin sister he never knew about and his determination to find her and save her from the prison colony she was sent to by their parents for reasons unknown. And then when we meet Iva? Who doesn't love a good prison break story??? I thought her half of the plot was particularly well done, with high stakes, desperate circumstances, and real change in her and the characters around her as they slowly rallied into a determined fighting force against impossible odds. The emergence of an alien threat to the empire was creepy and compelling and the closing action brought tears to my eyes... I can't wait to see where this series goes next!!

I would like to start this off by saying thank you to Friso. Thank you for reaching out and giving me the opportunity to advance read Gray Messiah. This was my first ARC ever and there couldn’t have been a better book to start with.

Holy what a story! It was gripping from beginning to end; I couldn’t put it down. Friso has done a fantastic job at creating the world within Gray Messiah, as well as the characters. The two MCs are relatable even while they undergo exceptional growth during their separate journeys.

Gray Messiah is captivating. It’s thrilling. It’s an adventure! The pacing is well done; I was never bored while reading. There are many themes throughout the book: civil unrest, politics, religion, and rebellion to name a few. Add in some twists and turns, and get ready to experience a mentally and emotional journey!

This is not a book for beginners in the genre, but is 100% worth the read if you enjoy fantasy. I will constantly be recommending Gray Messiah to everyone and cannot wait for the next book in the series!

First, I want to say thank you F.J.R. Halbertsma for letting me read the ARC before release! This book comes out October 20,2025!

This book is amazing! The characters are so complex, their personalities are so unique. Each one of them has their own goals, beliefs, wants, desires, pasts, that make them, them. You can feel for each character, you can relate to some. The plot was also so interesting! It was something I’ve never heard of before, and the way it was written really made it beautiful and amazing! I was able to imagine almost every scene, see the characters! The way the characters interact, with each of their personalities showing, being incorporated in how they act, respond to one another, to situations, just made this book so immersive!!! As this is an ARC, review I am keeping this spoiler free! Overall, this book is immersive, compelling, and a must read for high-fantasy fans!!!

P.s fans of Brandon Sanderson, you will love this!

5/5 ⭐ — Gray Messiah by F.J.R. Halbertsma

Gray Messiah completely swept me away from the first page. It’s an epic fantasy that blends rich world-building, deep emotion, and moral complexity in a way that feels both grand and intimate. Prince Azaleum’s journey from exile and disgrace to redemption, intertwined with his twin sister Iva’s survival and transformation after years of suffering, creates a story that’s powerful, tragic, and deeply human. The prophecy of the Gray Messiah and the ancient evils awakening beneath the prison isle give the book a mythic scale, while the twins’ emotional struggles keep it grounded. The writing is vivid, the pacing sharp, and every chapter feels like it’s leading toward something immense. It’s the kind of debut that makes you immediately want the next book. If you love stories about destiny, rebellion, and the thin line between salvation and destruction, Gray Messiah is a must-read.

I had the pleasure of receiving this an advanced copy direct from the author. Thankyou

Overall I enjoyed the book however, it took me a long time to finish this. I felt it was a “heavy read” possibly the complexity of the storyline.
The story is well written and the world creation provides epic imagery thanks to wonderful descriptive writing.
The MMC and sibling FMC grow well as individuals while on their quest to find each other. They both gave many trials and tribulations on their respective journeys.
I enjoyed the dual POV I think it worked well meaning as there are dual MCs

This is the first book in a series. There is more to come from Iva and Aza!!

ARC review of Gray Messiah by F.J.R. Halbertsma

This is the first book in a new upcoming epic fantasy series. I got the privilege of being an ARC reader for this and I’ve gotta say, it was an adventure! The characters had an exponential amount of growth throughout the book and we got to read through multiple POVs. Siblings Iva and Azaleum have many trials along their paths that tests their strength and purpose. They have accomplished a lot by the end of the book but their journey is just beginning!
Overall I enjoyed this and am excited to continue reading Iva and Azaleum’s story!

This story is written in the first person POV. You follow the intricate story of the two maincharacters, who both have very interesting and seperate paths. During the story you get to know the world and meet a lot of colorful sidecharacters who enlighten (and sometimes darken) the story. What I liked most was the way F.J.R. Halbertsma has tought of every little detail to make his world come to life. Everything fits just right and everything has it's purpose in the story. I cannot wait to see what will come of this story in the next books!

First of all, I would like to thank the author for reaching out to me and offering to send me an electronic advanced reader copy of this book.

I found it too heavy and complex at times. While this book had a lot of promise, I couldn't bring myself to finish it. It covered a range of topics, such as religion, racism and classism, which I thought were cleverly written.

You have Azaleum, who is the aristocrat. Born into power and leadership. Then we have Iva, who is the proletariat. His long lost twin sister. They both have to find a way to move on from the past.

Overall, I think it had great potential, but it just wasn't for me. I absolutely loved the cover art and the map! It was clear that a lot of thought was put into this book as it was very detailed.

Favourite quotes:

“Cold shivers crawl down my skin like a thousand knife-legged spiders.”

‘Did the cockroaches bite off your ears? GO!’

‘I will always be here for you.’

Her face lights up with eternity, stars, planets, and endless possibility.

When her infinite golden eyes meet mine, I nearly succumb to the tremendous pressure, as if my skin is too tight to keep my soul in place.

Sit your butts down!! This book is not for beginners, but so worth it!!

The amount of world building that is taking place is enough to challenge the world building of TOG (Throne of Glass series). Mental breaks were needed while reading but I was consistently drawn in back for more, so heads up in a good way. Add some rebellion, civil unrest, political ploy, challenging religious and social "norms" to the mix and you get just a few of the drops, loop-the-loops and corkscrews you will experience on this rollercoaster of ethical and emotional journey. Just wait till the not 1, not 2, not 3 but 6!!! Yes 6 POV cliffhanger!

I was left mentally and emotionally confused, yet still starving for more! I am hooked and eager to read more! If you loved TOG, you will enjoy this book!! Happy Reading.
