Blue Hour: A Love Story

Rate this book
A timely, aching meditation on how haunted pasts and oppressive powers shape our longing for intimacy, safety, and a self that feels whole.

Lacy travels to Italy with her mother and sister, still reeling from her father’s prison sentence for exploiting her images online. There, she meets Sam, grappling with the recent death of his abusive father, left to manage the emotional fallout of his mother. In each other, they find a moment of solace from the chaos of their lives. But when Lacy leaves abruptly, they part without full names or phone numbers.

Years pass, shaped by grief, family scars, and the daily work of survival. When they cross paths again, now held by a queer, loving community, they’re faced with a can love survive the systems built to suppress it?

Tender, poetic, and quietly radical, Blue Hour is for lovers of literary fiction and sensual, emotionally rich romance. A novel full of yearning that dares to imagine hope as resistance, and love as a revolutionary act.

Blue Hour is a love letter to love and humanity, in all its good, bad, ugly, and breathtaking. It is a sprawling tale of romance that centres on love, but doesn’t shy away from exploring deep trauma, unyielding pain, community, society, complex familial dynamics, and everything that makes or breaks us. A raw and radical take on the “they met on vacation and fell in love” trope, Sam and Lacy’s romance is a slow burning one filled with yearning, aching, crushing; it is one that will leave you kicking your feet and giggling, but also sobbing and rooting for them to make it.

The novel is hauntingly beautiful and downright heartbreaking at times, but it is punctuated with hope, optimism, and reminders of how to hold on to the best of humanity in the worst of times. Laida Lee’s writing is easy to read, smooth and healing, a balm for even the most jaded of souls. Whether you’re a fan of sultry love scenes, giddy rom-coms, devastating family drama, or a profound commentary on the systems built to suppress real, unconditional love, Blue Hour is a triumph on all fronts.

im normally really picky when it comes to romance books, so i was delighted that i found myself drawn to these characters, their trauma and their love story.

it really took me on a roller coaster of emotions and i found myself wondering how the characters would connect again as you follow them through the many chapters of their lives. would recommend to anyone looking for their next cozy slow burn romance read!!

“Don’t let fear rewrite your memories”…

Laida has that rare magic you hope to find in an author - the ability to capture your own thoughts and emotions so precisely that you catch yourself thinking, “Yes, that’s exactly how I’ve felt… I just never knew how to say it.”

This book made me feel less alone in dealing with my trauma. I didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters, who felt like friends to me, but I can’t wait to see what Laida Lee creates next.
