Howdy, bud. It's Rusty. Like any space trucker worth his stardust, I know a fella's ship is more than a machine, it's your home sweet home. Our rig Nessie's got everything we need to haul cargo across the galaxy, but when it comes to creature comforts, she's about as cozy as sharing a sleeping bag with a wet porcupine.
And it ain't just the decor that needs work. Our old girl has more mechanical problems than a used car lot run by Evel Knievel. So we're gonna hit up a spaceship pick-n-pull yard to hunt for bargains like my grandma at a flea market with bingo money to burn. And we'd better get those repairs done quick, 'cause we got a new job offer for a cargo run too juicy to pass up.
This adventure's gonna be a little bit home-improvement show, a little bit junkyard jamboree, and a whole lotta laughs. But with good friends, bad jokes, and plenty of elbow grease, we're gonna turn this rust bucket into the comfiest cruiser in the cosmos.
No Stress Space Express is a series about finding your true family, told with the common-sense wisdom of Jerry Boyd's Bob and Nikki series (Bob's Saucer Repair), and the low-stakes world building of Travis Baldree's Legends & Lattes. Join Rusty and his crew for a heart-warming, laugh-out-loud adventure with no tension, and no drama. Just good clean fun, great friendships, and a little romance too.
Jack Bodett lives at the corner of duct tape and destiny. His humorous science-fiction tales are populated by folks who are equally good at building spaceships and building friendships. He believes that with a good sense of humor, a willingness to help others, and a well-stocked tool belt, anyone can bang together their own happy ending.
Jack Bodett is back again with another No Stress Space Express novel — this one entitled Scrapyard Supernova.
This time around, we follow our friends Rusty & Piper and Mike & Jenna as they seek to make repairs to their ships while saving a buck (or a quarkle) by digging through the largest scrapyard that humans Rusty and Mike have ever seen!
But before our crew removes their sleeves and get their hands dirty, the readers are treated to new locations aboard the Romari Mothership that is their home. Most of the time, Rusty and friends take the “omnivators” (elevators that move in all directions, like the turbolifts on Star Trek). This book, however, opens with Rusty moving around “behind the scenes,” so to speak, and exploring nooks & crannies we don’t usually see. The troupe also visits a mattress store (following a lingering plot thread from an earlier novel) that is designed like a large cavern (remember, this is aboard a spaceship).
Eventually, the No Stress Space Express crew make their way to the huge scrapyard that is the book’s focal point. And they dig in for good ol’ fashioned exploration.
Bodett has demonstrated two strengths with this series:
First, he creates likeable character after likeable character; given that these books are marketed as “Cozy, Low-Stakes, Slice-of-Life Sci-fi Adventures,” that makes sense, and it pays off well. Having lots of levity and fun humor helps, too.
Second, Bodett has a knack for taking sci-fi technology and giving it a “grounded feel.” In Star Wars, you never question the tech — it just works; in Star Trek, the tech is explained via futuristic “technobabble.” But in this series, even when you’re dealing with concepts that are only make-believe in the real world, the author breaks it down in ways that make it (seem to) make real-world sense. This serves the series well, as it explains why truck-drivin’ handymen from Earth are able to adapt to their new environment with few mishaps.
This latter strength shines brightly in this entry in the series, as our friends dig through multiple scrapped spaceships for the parts they need. And they even take a break to remind the reader that all four of them are TOTAL foodies!
No spoilers, but “Scrapyard Supernova” wraps up in a way that fully sets up the next novel in the series. And I will absolutely return for Book #7. Enjoy!
This book filled a pleasant interlude between my previous book of saving a friendly alien race from extinction and the next book where Earths' history must not be rearranged by time travelers. This book had the no stress fun of going to a spaceship boneyard where the characters looked for used parts to fix up their old space freighter. Good clean (well grimy) fun where interesting things are found and salvaged. No surprise evil monsters to interrupt trying to eat our crew. This crew works together, has fun, nice friends, good meals and a wholesome lifestyle. Jack Bodett is amazing by continuing to write very interesting no stress books where people live their lives and are not called on to save the universe. They are called on to help their friends and enjoy doing so. Recommended.
This was a fun read in the the true No Stress Style! A "Redneck SciFi RomCom" in the best meaning of the phrase! A quick read that ends in a nasty, sneaky,, fashion... LOL! I was so invested in the story that the reality of a month and a half wait until the next sentence took a minute to sink in! 😂😂 Oh Well my library is filled with half a dozen Other Kindle Unlimited series I am reading simultaneously. I really enjoy these books by Jack Bodett for their literal stress free, (except for the cliffhangers), reading experiences.
This is a lighthearted funny fantasy. It has lots of cultural references that feel like inside jokes. I’ve enjoyed the entire series. This is not serious commentary on our society. No swearing. No sex.
Rusty and Mike need some parts to refurbish Nessie so they head to a giant scrapyard where they are like kids in a toy store; they are delighted with what they find. A great story.
Author spent to much time on breaking down how everything was taken apart and Disembled than one story itself. I was skipping pages just to get back to the actual story
This series is so much fun and has great writing. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to the author can you write a little faster please? ENJOY!
Nice series of sci-fi universe. Friendly and fun read. Sometimes it’s relaxing to read something fun and funny without the pressure of imminent destruction.
Still a really good set of trucker and different kinds interactions with people. Really fun to listen to them try to get the aliens to be quite so human-like.
Well, this one is pretty much the same as the previous books. It is a new adventure in the universe of this series of course but otherwise it is more of the same. Simply a cozy, enjoyable family read. Something to read on a rainy day or in front of the TV.
