Rate this book
A bounty hunter with nothing left to lose. A wounded woman with everything at stake. Can love survive when danger rides with every shadow?

Shad Stone’s dreams of owning a ranch are shattered when his uncle’s reckless actions wipe out his savings. Now, Shad is determined to capture a high-value outlaw to rebuild his future—even if it means facing a ruthless criminal protected by a dozen gunfighters and a corrupt lawman. But fate intervenes when a storm drives Shad to shelter in a cave, where he finds Avonleigh Adams, badly injured and on the run from the very man Shad is hunting.

Avonleigh’s family has lost everything to the outlaw who stole their ranch and shot her father. Though Shad knows rescuing her will complicate his mission, he can’t abandon a woman in need. As they join forces against overwhelming odds, Shad must decide if he can trust Avonleigh—and if he dares to open his heart again.

Can one man stand against a gang of killers? And can the woman he saves teach him that sometimes, the greatest reward is love?

Perfect for readers who love sweet western historical romance, bounty hunter heroes, Texas frontier adventure, strong heroine stories, romantic suspense westerns, redemption tales, and found family romance.

TAKING A STAND AGAINST EVIL

The new multi-author series, Gun For Hire, is sweet Westerns with romance. It is men who live by their guns—never knowing if this is their last day on earth. They are loners, guns-for-hire, cleaning up the evil, having a reputation as some of the fastest guns in the West. Life changes when they meet the right woman, one who can see past the harshness he faces and gives him hope for a future.

The story takes place in 1881, beginning in Lizard Butte, Southern Colorado, with bounty hunter Shad Stone, arriving at the jailhouse to discover what his Uncle Virgil has done. It will cost Shad all the money he has in the bank, but he will have his uncle released, and now Shad needs to find more bounties to hunt. Against the advice of his cousin, the sheriff, Buck Holt, he will learn of one high payout bounty in New Mexico, looking for a man who goes by multiple aliases, including Robert Larkin. He has a gang, has killed countless men, and stolen from a long list of people and businesses, including Wells Fargo. If Shad is ever to recoup his money and have a future as a rancher, he needs this to work.

The story will have Shad going to Rock Bench, Northern New Mexico, and in the process, he needs to find shelter with an impending storm approaching. What a shock to find a big enough cave for both him and his two horses—but he won’t be alone. The cave is large, with paintings on the walls, but it is the noise that garners his attention and the discovery of a severely injured young woman. Avonleigh Adams is injured during her flight from the family ranch, where she was being held prisoner. When Shad finds her, she needs immediate medical attention, and things are still touchy as she heals. It won’t be long before Shad learns that his query has overrun the Adams ranch, shot her father, Hamish, and planned to force Avonleigh into a marriage to gain control.

I enjoyed the story with the good, the bad, and the evil of people. When Shad came to New Mexico, he knew it was dangerous, that Larkin was surrounded by gunslingers, and had no scruples. It will be a journey of alerting the right authorities, incorporating close friends of the Adams, and executing a plan to get his man and the bounty on his head. The one thing Shad never expected was a feisty redhead who takes him to task and can dish out and take whatever comes her way. The tête-à-tête inside the cave, and even later, between Avonleigh and Shad, keeps the pages turning. I admire how strong she is, how Shad puts her health and well-being above his plans, and together, along with the Montoya family, they come up with a strong plan to change the tide and turn it in their favor. While Shad never plans to marry, maybe he has met his match with Avonleigh.
