Everything was going according to plan. I was attending a top college, with the perfect job lined up after graduation. I was in love, engaged to marry the man of my dreams. The wedding was planned. The dress was picked out.
Until I found out the truth.
He wasn’t in love. Not when I walked in on him with someone else.
A year later, I’m a college dropout barely making ends meet. He graduated, moved on, and never looked back.
This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
I’ve done things that maybe in my situation, you’ve thought about doing. I’m not looking for love. I’m still trying to figure out how to move on from the pain. And maybe, just maybe, calling my ex’s best friend that drunken night wasn’t my smartest decision. But I’m not the same woman I was before. Not even close.

Short novella that was ok. A little inconsistent with the writing, but I overlooked that. Starts out with the h spiralling after being cheated on by her college fiance. Not too much detail is given about the whys other than Sebastian the fiance is a rich selfish asshole. As the story progresses we learn the h liked Sebastian's friend Knox first, but Knox passed her over because of Sebastian. Year's go by I guess. No definite description is given. Lana is working in a bar and uses coke, men, and alcohol to cope. Knox shows up and there begins his dedication of trying to pull Lana back from destroying herself. We learn that Knox liked Lana first. Sebastian knew, but got there first. Knox has regret and continues to pursue Lana. We could all be so lucky. To be cheated on by one rich guy to end up with an even richer better rich guy. Not realistic, but hey it would be nice.
Overall just ok. I call this book safe even though cheating is on page because h ends up with a second better H which I think the safety gang can get behind. She didn't beg. She kicked him out after the cheating and never went there. She also wasn't celibate, but it's not something we can be like "yes, queen. get that d." No. She's using men unhealthily to fill a hole inside her where she has to always get STI tested. So, some of this was realistic. The loneliness. The heartache. The spiral. The second rich H coming into saving her? Not so realistic.
Carmen Rosales is one of my favorite authors who writes damaged characters you can’t help but love and root for. The underdog who fights for the win while simultaneously self sabotaging good people and things. Lana, our narrator is sliding down a cliff side after catching her fiancé cheating on her. She slides into a depression not caring about herself or a future. There are some powerfully written paragraphs that were very much parallel to my 20’s I had to beat back those memories. The ex Sebastian was just the right amount of douche, and a new romance begins to sprout. Drug use and no-name sex throughout if you’re sensitive. But it’s a short novella so felt like some info was forgotten. Worth the quick read.
"Love isn't what ruins people. It's the people who destroy it."
Carmen Rosales is my guilty pleasure... Her writing could be called as raw, beautiful chaos, but I love her stories very much... This ride was a difficult one!!! It gutted me from time to time... This was Lana's story and that girl had it all, until... he cheated!!! Some time later, we are witnessing Lana's spiraling and it is so heartbreaking to watch her like that!!! My heart was aching for her... and then, a drunken phone call is changing everything!!!
"I look like a ghost of someone who used to be alive. Someone who used to wear promises like perfume. Now I just smell like regret and sweat."
God, I loved Knox very much!!! In the flashbacks, I had mixed feelings for him, until I understood him better, but his insistence with Lana was magnificent!!! He was determined to pull her out of her misery and I loved him for that!!! These two were just perfect for each other... Alongside him, Lana managed to shine again and to leave the ugliness behind!!! This was the ugly spiraling of a betrayed woman, but it was also the re-inventing of herself!!! Knox was just the side bonus!!!
"I'm not your responsibility." "No. You're my choice."

Carmen is one of my favorite authors. From the start of every book you get sucked in right away, you can’t stop reading, you don’t WANT to stop reading and you get annoyed if someone interrupts you while you’re reading her books. They just invoke a lot of emotions and are written differently where you are immediately immersed in the middle of someone’s life. They are raw and unapologetic. This novella was short but not rushed. If you have ever been cheated on by someone you love then this story is for you.
Lana had it all. A perfect life, a perfect fiance, top of her graduating college class, a great job waiting for her……. Until he cheated. And then everything went downhill. This is her spiraling, hitting rock bottom and finding herself again.
This was such a quick yet captivating read! The fast-paced storytelling kept me turning the pages, and even though it was a shorter journey, it was packed with emotion and growth. I loved how Carmen Rosales delivered a story that not only explored heartbreak but also healing and self-discovery. The plot moved smoothly, and the pacing made it impossible to put down.
Story started out good but as time went on I couldn’t keep up with timeline or typos/grammar. At first I thought years had passed from breakup to present then it mentions months, hence the confusion. I couldn’t get beyond the grammar issues and typos, almost as if book was never proofread. Heartbreaking story with HEA but took some time to get to end result.
I am happy lana was able to ret. and 9build herself after what Sebastian did to her. At one point i thought she wasnt going to get better until that one phone call to knox. In the end they both fell in ❤️.
Okay, so I’m a huge fan of Carmen Rosales, and I was so ready for this novella! The writing is still that intense, emotional punch she’s known for, which is why I was hooked from the start. The premise about a woman consumed by the pain of betrayal and spiraling completely out of control is full of drama and promised a truly angsty read.
However, I ended up giving this one 3 stars because of a few major issues that really threw me off. First, there was a big problem with the timeline. When we start reading, the main character is in a really dark place, dealing with serious stuff like dropping out of college and struggling with drugs and alcohol. It felt like this awful situation had been brewing for ages, maybe a year or two, you know? But then, BAM—it’s revealed that only a few months have actually passed since the breakup! Going from a "bright college student" to that deep of a spiral in just a few months felt totally unbelievable to me.
My second major issue was the lack of context and world building. The heroine is completely alone, she's apparently been abandoned by everyone, and we get zero detail about where her family or friends are. This isolation felt very forced and convenient. Crucially, since she mentions the relationship with her ex was going back to high school?!, we desperately needed more flashbacks or context about their history. Without knowing the foundation of that long term relationship, it was hard to truly grasp the monumental devastation that caused her to spiral so fast.
So if you love Rosales and her angst, you’ll probably still enjoy the intense ride. But you definitely have to majorly suspend your disbelief when it comes to the timeline, the heroine's sudden, dramatic isolation, and the missing backstory. It was a good read, but the lack of earned context kept it from being a favorite.
The book opens in raw despair: a woman unraveling after the ultimate betrayal. With a wedding planned, a venue booked, graduation on the horizon, and dreams of conquering the world, everything collapses like a house of cards when she discovers her fiancé in bed with another student.
The fallout is brutal. She drops out of college, numbs herself with booze, drugs, and strangers, and lives in a loop designed to erase memory and feeling. Yet every morning, she still checks her phone—hoping for a call, a message, anything—and finds nothing. The cycle begins again.
Then, by accident, she dials her ex’s best friend. He hears her break down in the street and rushes to her side. Against her protests, he becomes her reluctant savior. Slowly, their history unfolds: he was her first choice, but he didn’t want commitment. She settled for someone else—and paid the price.
The narrative weaves between past and present, showing her destructive spiral alongside his quiet determination to pull her back from the edge. What struck me most was her flicker of self-awareness: even in the darkness, she knows she wants better. She insists she doesn’t need help, but what she truly craves is hope. Knox offers that—just enough light, just enough push—for her to rediscover her strength.
I’ll admit it: cheating romances are my forbidden pleasure. I love watching heroines claw their way back from devastation, and this one is among the darkest I’ve read. I admired her resilience and the love she eventually finds. Still, the book wasn’t perfectly structured. The backstories felt hazy, Luna’s family was absent, and the timeline wavered—sometimes the betrayal seemed fresh, other times years old.
Even so, the emotional intensity kept me hooked. It’s messy, it’s painful, but it’s also about survival, hope, and the complicated ways love can heal.
"I want something to erase the taste of hope. Because hope is a trap."
"Love isn’t what ruins people. It’s the people who destroy it."
This clearly is about a woman, Lana, who was cheated on. Unfortunately, Lana saw the evidence with her own eyes. Currently Lana is on the struggle bus. Lana is broken and at her lowest point. I think Lana just wants someone to recognize her struggles. Mostly, Lana has lost herself in alcohol, men, sex, and drugs. Lana doesn't know how to make her life better. Finally someone notices the hell Lana is putting herself through. That person is Knox, the cheaters best friend. Lana really wants to know why Knox now cares. I think Lana is too out of control. Knox is too buttoned up and closed off. Knox can't fix Lana. Lana has to decide she's worth it before she can do anything else. Can Lana recover or is she destined to break again?
There were so many struggles in this book. Lana was a lot. There were parts that were confusing. I would've liked it more if I understood the attraction that Lana and Knox once had. I needed more detail in that area for the story to make sense. The timing is a little hard to follow, too. Knox often acts interested while pushing Lana away. I like Carmen Rosales but this book just wasn't my favorite by her.

This novella felt like reading a poem—raw, aching, and stripped down to the bone. I read it in one sitting because once I stepped into Lana’s world, I couldn’t look away. Her heartbreak, her broken plans, the shattering discovery of betrayal… it all seeped off the page and hit on a visceral level.
What struck me most is how deeply personal this story feels. You can sense the author’s vulnerability in every line—like the writing itself is an act of healing. It’s not just a story about cheating; it’s about the wreckage left behind, the spiral that follows, and the desperate, messy ways we try to cope when the life we built suddenly crumbles.
The contrast between love and desire, pain and longing, strength and self-destruction is woven with such emotional clarity that it reads almost like a confession. There’s beauty in its honesty, even when the words hurt.
This is a short read, but it lingers. It’s intimate, poetic, and heavy in all the ways that matter. If you’ve ever been shattered by someone you trusted—or confused desire for love—Lana’s journey will resonate. It’s a reminder that heartbreak can break you… but it can also become the place where you start to rebuild.
I received a free ARC and this review is only my opinion.
* I suppose this is another where I am voting against the popular vote. But, this one struck on a personal level with me. It is absolutely worth the read in my opinion.
Anyone that’s given everything of themselves to the wrong person, finding themselves broken & alone, spiraling instead of healing … ‘If He Hadn’t Cheated’ will hit the raw spots. Makes you think about that old bleed. Then, it whispers to remember your own worth. That you matter. That your happiness was never dependent on that one person.
Author Carmen Rosales has beautifully captured a gutturally realistic spiraling and rebuilding of self worth—Triggered by, and with the gentle guidance of, the man Lana should have waited for all those years ago.
Love , loss , heartbreak, betrayal, secrets , second chances , finding yourself broken and alone and learning to love and trust again . There are some books out there that just resonate with you and touch your heart ❤️ in a way that’s not so easy to put into words. In a way that rarely ever happens. Well I can say with 100% certainty that every time I pick up one of Carmen Rosales’s romances , it doesn’t matter if it’s part of a series or not . That’s exactly what happens . IF He Hadn’t Cheated was so addicting and beautiful and emotional to the point I can guarantee it Will pull on all your heartstrings in ways you’ll never ever be expecting. this journey was so raw and so real and let me just say it’s not an easy one .
This is my first read by Carmen Rosales. I actually have a few of her books but this is my first time picking one up! This is a short novella and it’s one every girl can relate to.. Lana is a shell of the person she used to be. Losing her fiancé to another woman she can’t figure out the in and out of where it all went wrong. She lives the night of devastation on repeat whether awake or asleep . Finding solace with strangers, alcohol, and substances. Devastated about someone she thought she knew and the person she thought she was…. She begins to pick up the pieces with a very unlikely companion. She questions can she ever move forward or is she going to be stuck forever in time.
I've read some of this author's previous books, and I really enjoyed them, so I thought I'd give this a try too.
This short story follows the journey of Lana, whose world crumbles when her fiancé, Sebastian, is unfaithful. I've found this author has a way of writing that makes you feel very connected to the characters, and it continued here. I sympathised with Lana, but at the same time, she had an inner strength that I admired. She made me think about how we are never defined by our bad experiences ; they're just part of our story. This felt like a pretty intense read for a short story, but I enjoyed it.

Lana and Knox
This short novel follows Lana and Knox. After being cheated on by her ex Lana’s life takes a detour. One where Knox shows up and wants to save her from her self-destructing path. We learn that both liked each other first but that Sebastian, the cheated best friend, got her first. Something that is today deeply regretted. Lana finally gets the boy who was meant to be with her and she also gets the better one. A happy end, that is deserved and healing.
This is a hard hitting emotional read, but it is oh so good. I didn’t expect it to be so poignant. This book captures my attention from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. Lana has gone through hell and back and she shows what a total betrayal can do to a person. I like how Knox is there to help, but the decision and choice is down to her. The writing is excellent, and the emotion feels real. I love this book and I hope that this world is revisited as there are some characters that would make excellent reading.
This is a short but intense story of a young woman who was emotionally lost after her fiancé cheated. She spiraled into a deep pit. Her feelings were raw and the hurt felt so deep. There were moments when I felt like she wasn’t going to make it through.
The story was a bit confusing as far as the timeline. It is told on past and present events but I wasn’t sure how much time passed between events.

This is not at all what I expected from this author. I understand this is an advanced reader's copy, so I'm not even talking about all the grammar and spelling errors. I'm talking about the story itself. The whole thing was repetitive. I understand the struggles with addiction as somebody that's been recovering for a long time. What I don't understand is the self-sabotage and spiral that deep over someone cheating.

Lana gave Sebastian her all but he gave himself to another and cheats, Knox, Sebastians best friend knew what he did but didnt tell Lana, and she spirals after the discovery, but Knox wont let her spiral alone, even if her ex wants her back. Well written the story has depth and emotion and if youve been through it, it really hits you in the feels.

This is a compelling story about betrayal, heartache that led to emotional downfall and a woman's rise to take back her life. Knox is a man you have to like because he was always in the background the one who loved her first but stepped aside. Now he is front and center and I love him for how he approached their relationship.

If He Hadn't Cheated by Carmen Rosales. This is definitely one of those stories you have to dive into with the right mind set and keep your judgements in check. For anyone who has gone through this difficult time, my heart goes out to you (I fall into this category myself) and can relate to the pain and difficult decisions of forgiving or not and moving on. Lana’s story is beautifully written, and I enjoyed it immensely.
This is a really good ex's friend romance. Lana and Knox are the main characters. After Lana finds her fiancé cheating on her she goes through an awful time. She uses too many bad mechanisms to cope with her grief and when Knox happens to see her and how far she's fallen, he swoops in like her knight in shining armor. If you like a sort of damsel in distress story with the rich guy coming into save her then you will have to read this one.
This is a well written emotional roller coaster, with friendships, challenges, betrayal, secrets, heartbreak, loss, making choices, tension, acceptance, survival, healing, undeniable chemistry, and unconditional love, which leads to a heartwarming page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Short but sweet novella. I thought overall the book was okay. The timeline jumps were a little confusing. I thought years had passed but it sounds like 6 months or so had passed. There were some typos which made reading a little difficult since I had to figure out what was being said. Overall it was a decent book, but I dont think I would read it again.
What the hell was that? I’m sorry but •boring characters •no substance •rushed •first few chapters seemed repetitive and tedious •needs editing, too many errors •no real action/drama/suspense •cover totally inadequate with the story •book about nothing
I’m so disappointed, but also glad it was a quick read.

Carmen has written a tragically beautiful second coming of age book with this one. I cried along with the FMC, felt her when she was at her lows, and fell in love with the MMC with her. It's a fast paced story, and I felt all the emotions. Highly recommend.

Lana story was one heartbreaking read. Her story it’s about how you survived a betrayal so big that at the beginning you don’t know how you move on from it. She was one strong woman that she was bent but not broken. At the end she found her strength and found her happy ending.
This book gave you so many feelings. The emotions behind these characters was deep. However, it seemed disjointed, and I really wish this was developed more, because while the story was good, it could've been EPIC.
