I really enjoyed this book. I figured out half of the mystery just from the title/synopsis, but I didn't get the twists at all, but then again, I'm not one to try to figure things out, so they have to be VERY obvious for me to get them or it has to be a very well-placed trail of bread crumbs for me to follow.
And the bread crumbs were there and I felt SO SMART as I figured things out alongside of the characters, lol.
The story is very sad, but it is also hopeful and up-lifting as well. It's told from different POVs, with one reporter character interviewing the other characters to figure out the mystery of, well, the title.
The Hero is the most interesting of all of the characters. I would have loved to see some more from his POV. It is very humanizing to see how the others in the Hero's party viewed him at first and then how their thoughts and beliefs changed after getting to know him.
The ending, OOF! Now there is heartbreak and hope. I won't spoil it for you, but it was very moving, to me. I was going to give this four stars, but after writing this review, I talked it up enough to myself to give it the full five. I want this in my personal library and I'm curious to see what volume 2 will be like, as this story arc has been concluded definitely.

Amazing, I literally can't put this book down and binged it in a day. It's so good, the plot, world building, characters everything is flawless.
It's really interesting how the author can manage to hook you in the world this cliche and full of rpg tropes. We have a hero chosen to fight the demon lord and he was promised a princess and become king when he return. It probably sound boring when you first hear it.
But after you turn a few more pages, you realize there's more than that. Every characters even the mobs, background characters feel like real people. For example: In this world setting, the demon lord rise up and probably will destroy human kingdom in near future, but beside from the army on the frontline, everything seem almost normal. Yes, everyone know they maybe gonna die if the demon lord win, and yet they don't even try to do something about it. They scared, but they didn't do anything and just wait for someone or something solve the problem for them, noble or peasant alike. The nobles who attended the school for training the next hero put bare minimum effort in there training because, as the hero observed, they didn't want to become too good, lest they being put in the frontline and fight the demon army, ridiculous but pretty realistic. One part that make me interested to this book immediately is the princess compare herself to the price they pay to hire a high class assassin to kill the demon lord. I read it and laugh a good while, yup, hero? They basically just an assassin the royal hired to kill their enemy, I never thought about that, brilliant.
And the characters, oh man I love all characters in this book. They all complex and have their own self shaped by their upbringing and the world around them. We have the sword saint who looked like a bratty, spoiled noble kid at the first glance but he a passionate man who genuinely want to do something to save his people even though he didn't think highly of them, he's a lonely kid who want to find someone understand him and become his comrade.
A holy maiden look perfect on the outside but beneath the facade is a girl with horrible personality because of all the stress she has to put up every day by maintaining that mask. A genius mage who desperate want to have a friend because he's too brilliant for those around him even if he always denied that fact.
And a hero, who mediocre at everything but second to none when it come to willpower and perseverance. He always look so desperate when it's come to learning skills that you have to wonder why he tried that hard. He got no talent, it took him years just to cast a small fire at his fingertip, a healing spell that can only treat scratches. He spent hours swinging a sword thousands time but can only managed to become a mediocre swordsman. And yet, he's still do it, even though his efforts look meaningless on the eye of the outsiders. For some reason. Maybe it's simply because he wanted to save the world but why bother? A lot of people stronger than him, powerful than him, smarter than him can do the job. But he knew, become the chosen one is to shoulder all hope of people, and maybe he wishes to have that burden so that no one have to carry it, or maybe for something else...
Which lead to a couple of twist in this book, yes reading this book is really a damn roller coaster of emotion, the author just sprinkling some tidbits of hints along the way and if you quick to pickup small details you will see the whole picture behind the simple story about chosen hero. I love how he casually dropped a detailed about some weird behavior seem out of character of the hero and then bring it up again to let reader notice it actually really logical when you finally learn about the hero's past.
Also one more thing, I love the way some chapter was written like a real interview, it's really interesting and unique. And now I think about it, this book really feel a bit similar to The Wheel of Time, both tackle with the idea of the chosen one trope really well, that one of the reasons why I love it so much.
Overall, this book is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend every fantasy fan to check it out. It a standalone book, so you can finish it in a day, it's pretty short too.

เอาจริง ประทับใจเลยนะ คือ เริ่มต้นแบบราโชมอน ผู้กล้าปราบจอมมารแล้ว ภายหลังเขาเสียชีวิต จึงริเริ่มทำพงศาวดารของผู้กล้าไว้เป็นอนุสรณ์แด่ชนรุ่นหลัง แต่ปรากฎว่า เมื่อไปสอบถามรายละเอียดจากก๊วนปาร์ตี้ของผู้กล้าทั้งสามคน พวกเขาให้รายละเอียดการเสียชีวิตของผู้กล้าไม่ชัดเจน คลุมเครือ จนน่าสงสัย ซึ่งนำมาสู่การหาความจริงว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้นกับผู้กล้ากันแน่
การตามหาความจริงตรงนี้เอง นำมาสู่เรื่องราวอีกท่วงทำนอง เพราะมันเป็นการวิพากษ์สังคมในโลกของผู้กล้าที่สามารถนำมาเทียบกับโลกความเป็นจริงได้แบบตรงเป๊ะๆ
โลกที่ความชั่วร้ายดำรงอยู่ เราต้องการผู้กล้าซักคนที่ลุกขึนต่อกรกับมารร้าย แต่ถ้าถามว่าให้เราไปเป็นผู้กล้ามั้ย คำตอบคือไม่ ใครจะอยากออกไปเสี่ยงตาย แต่ถ้ามีใครซักคนจะเป็นผู้กล้า เราสนับสนุนเต็มที่ ซึ่งมันตลกมากเพราะนัยหนึ่งมันคือการเชียร์ให้คนออกไปตาย เพราะผู้กล้าจะปราบปีศาจได้มั้ยไม่มีอะไรการันตีเลย
เรื่องมันเลยโคตรย้อนแย้ง ในเวลาที่เราอยากเปลี่ยนแปลงโลก โดยที่เราไม่อยากลงแรงหรือเสียสละอะไร อยากใช้ชีวิตตามปกติแล้วรอ "ผู้กล้า" ซักคน มาอุทิศตัวให้
ผมชอบความจิกกัดที่ อ.ดะเค็น นำเสนอมาก เพราะมันซ้อนทับอย่างลงตัวในโลกความเป็นจริงแบบแนบสนิทเลย มองไปทางไหนก็มีแต่อะไรแบบนี้เป๊ะๆ จนงงว่าเรายกมือให้ผู้กล้าออกไปตายกี่คนแล้ว
ไม่แปลกใจที่งานเล่มนี้ของ อ.เลยฮิตเพราะมันไม่ใช่ไลท์โนเวล แฟนตาซีที่ล่องลอย แต่มันคืองานจินตนาการที่นำพาเราให้คิดถึงอีกมุมหนึ่งที่เราไม่เคยคิดในโลกความเป็นจริง งานมันเลยดูโตและมีอะไรมากกว่าความสนุกย่อยง่ายเมื่อนึกถึงไลท์โนเวล ซึ่งอาจเป็นไปได้ที่งานมันดู โต กว่างานอื่นๆ เป็นไปได้ว่าเพราะ อ.แก มาเป็นนักเขียนตอนอายุเยอะแล้ว เห็นอะไรมาพอสมควรจนรู้สึกว่านี่คือสิ่งที่ควรนำมาเขียนให้ คนอ่าน "ได้เห็น" โดยเฉพาะวัยรุ่น (เป็นเป้าหมายหลักของไลท์โนเวล) เพื่อให้พวกเขาโตไปโดยมองเห็นว่าสังคมที่เรากำลังใช้ชีวิตอยู่นี้มันแปลกประหลาดแค่ไหน

I really enjoyed this story! It's told in an interviewer-style format, so most of the narrative unfolds through the perspectives of the people being interviewed. I liked how the mystery surrounding the Hero slowly unravels, with the truth being revealed bit by bit.
It’s a lighthearted, simple, and charming read with a unique structure that kept me intrigued from start to finish.

Dunia kehilangan sang Pahlawan setelah dia mengalahkan Raja Iblis. Dia dikabarkan tewas, tapi jasadnya tidak pernah ditemukan. Selang beberapa tahun, kerajaan hendak membuat literatur agung untuk mengenang jasa sang Pahlawan. Dilakukan wawancara kepada tim sang Pahlawan—para sahabatnya—mulai dari Leon Muller (Sword Saint), Maria Lauren (Divine Saint), dan Solon Barkley (Great Sage). Namun, siapa sebenarnya yang membunuh sang Pahlawan? Apakah benar dia mati saat melawan Raja Iblis?
Plot.
Seru!!!! Ini pertama kalinya bagi aku membaca light novel. Dan ini sangat berbekas buatku. Tema besarnya tentang pahlawan, bagaimana pahlawan tercipta, pahlawan itu seharusnya seperti apa dan bagaimana, dan tentang privilege dirangkum dengan baik dalam keseluruhan plot cerita di sini. Ditambah plot twist-nya yang DDANGGG!! Sungguh tidak tertebak dan meninggalkan perasaan mix feeling setelah tersingkap semuanya. Sedih, marah, sedih, tidak menyangka, kaget, sedih, iya lebih banyak ke sedih.
Perihal Privilege.
Ketika sudah terlahir dari klan bangsawan, dihormati tanpa perlu susah payah terbentur oleh strata. Atau lahir dengan bakat. Lahir sebagai anak ajaib. Lantas, apakah orang biasa tidak bisa menjadi Pahlawan? Tak memiliki bakat sejak lahir tak bisa menjadi Pahlawan? Karakter utama di buku ini memberikanku perspektif lain tentang bekerja keras dan privilege.
Mau seluruh dunia bilang tidak mungkin. Mau seluruh dunia mengatakan ini semua sia-sia. Jika kita memiliki tekad dan keinginan yang kuat, tak ada yang tidak mungkin. Ketika tak memiliki banyak privilege maka yang bisa diusahakan adalah bekerja keras, lain halnya ketika sudah memiliki segalanya, bisa jadi terlena.
Mereka memang manusia luar biasa, tapi terlalu mengandalkan kekuatan sendiri dan meremehkan orang lain. Itulah yang membuat mereka gagal menjadi pahlawan sejati. (p.191)
Ilustrasi.
Selain plot ceritanya yang meninggalkan kesan mendalam untukku, ilustrasinya pun sangat cantik. Bagus banget. Versi jacket book-nya memperlihatkan semua karakter dan brief penokohannya. Didalamnya pun ada ilustrasi-ilustrasi yang mendukung jalannya cerita. Suka dengan ilustrasi Ares-kun di akhir. Huhu, Ares :””
Rekomendasi.
Buku ini cocok bagi kamu yang sedang lelah dan tak tahu arah jalan mau kemana hidup ini membawamu. Refleksi dan keinginan kuat dari sang tokoh utama di buku ini bisa “memeluk” kamu sekaligus memberikan semangat bahwa siapa pun bisa menjadi pahlawan. Kamu tak perlu mengalahkan Raja Iblis dulu, tidak perlu pada kejadian yang megah dan rumit, hanya untuk menjadi Pahlawan. Cukup menjadi diri kamu yang tak pernah menyerah pada keadaan. Kalau capek bisa ke toko manisan dulu seperti tokoh utama di cerita ini :””

Seorang pahlawan seharusnya adalah seseorang yang mengubah hal mustahil menjadi mungkin. (p.46)
"Selama masih ada kemungkinan, aku akan terus bertaruh." (p.102)
Mau seluruh dunia bilang tidak mungkin. Mau seluruh dunia mengatakan ini semua sia-sia. Jika kita memiliki tekad dan keinginan yang kuat, tak ada yang tidak mungkin. Ketika tak memiliki banyak privilege maka yang bisa diusahakan adalah bekerja keras, lain halnya ketika sudah memiliki segalanya, bisa jadi terlena.
Mereka memang manusia luar biasa, tapi terlalu mengandalkan kekuatan sendiri dan meremehkan orang lain. Itulah yang membuat mereka gagal menjadi pahlawan sejati. (p.191)

Buku ini cocok bagi kamu yang sedang lelah dan tak tahu arah jalan mau kemana hidup ini membawamu. This one didn’t really feel like anything special. At least it wasn’t creepy, but I feel like that’s a low bar to set.
The characters didn’t really stand out (the female characters especially, were pretty archetypal and I think were done dirty by the story overall. Alexia is supposedly super competent in her own right and she spends all that effort chasing after some guy? Pass) and the structure made it so you didn’t really get to see the main cast interact as a group (only one-on-one with the Hero). And also because of the story structure, we didn’t get much action or movement. Almost all of the fighting and traveling took place off-page
I would have liked to see a bit more thrashing against the very strict cyclical nature of the world rather than just accepting that they’ll be doing the whole thing over again in a few decades

I bought this book on a whim, thinking that the description sounded pretty interesting to me. So, after deciding to buy it and having received said book, it unfortunately sat on my shelf for several months collecting dust. It was only a few days ago that I chose to pick it up and finally read this FREAKING MASTERPIECE!!! I get so aggravated with myself sometimes how I can allow these works of art to sit on my shelf for so long before diving into their glorious depths and then being so mind-blowingly obliterated by how wonderful it is!
You may be thinking I'm over exaggerating, but this book right here is a clear and perfect example of why I prefer the light novels from Japan compared to the slop that American authors have been writing these days. The only gripe I have for this novel is that it wasn't long enough! I want more!!

I don't want to say much as far as the story goes, because I don't want to spoil anything about it. I only want to highly encourage others to give this book a shot. I really feel like more people should enjoy this wonderful tale. Just reading about the courage and heroism from the main character was enough to encourage me in my own life.

Ares the Hero, was as plain as he could be. He wasn't the best at swordsmanship, that honor went to his friend Leon. His divine blessing for healing spells was miniscule at best, his other friend Maria though stood close to god so her healing skills were miraculous. And he could barely create a tiny flame with his magic, his very best friend Solon, though, was a magical prodigy. Together with his friends Ares sets out and defeats the Demon Lord, a victory that is bittersweet as Ares loses his life on the way back to the capital, leaving an entire kingdom to wonder Who Killed the Hero?
This was absolutely wonderful and if it doesn't get an anime there is no justice in this world!
Told from the perspectives of the people who knew Ares best an interviewer goes around the Kingdom to not only unravel the mystery of how the Hero died but who exactly was he? Every interview leads the reader a little bit closer to the truth by leaving just tiny pieces of information that if you don't pay attention when you finally find out who killed the hero you will be shocked! However, even if you do figure it out before the big reveal getting to know Ares and his friends is just a ton of fun.
There are a couple of things that put this over the top for me though. One is that Ares is and is not a reluctant Hero. Ares feels a deep obligation to many people to defeat the Demon Lord, even if it kills him, however, he never wanted to do this and because he spends a lot of time comparing himself to other people he genuinely doesn't believe he's the right guy for the role. Which in all honesty is almost aggravating, Ares is just a decent and kind person and the people around him want to be better because of who he is. He is quite simply a Hero.
The other thing is this is truly a story about never giving up and believing in other people. Ares doesn't defeat the demon lord because he's the strongest, the most skilled, or the one with some sort of innate talent; he does because he never stops trying no matter how difficult the task and because of this he is a natural-born leader able to see people's strengths and utilizing them effectively without being a jerk about it. But mostly he simply trusts and believes in his friends.
Highly recommend this for literally everyone, whether you watch anime or read light novels or not it was just simply a bright light.

Sebetulnya saya terombang-ambing, hendak memberi buku ini bintang empat atau lima. Awalnya, saya ingin memberinya bintang empat saja. Karena, jujur saja, beberapa bab awal terasa sangat mengusik bagi saya. Bukan karena isinya, bukan juga terjemahannya, sebenarnya, melainkan... catatan kakinya!
Entah penerjemah atau editor merasa perlu menambahkan catatan-catatan kaki yang sangat tidak perlu dan malah mengganggu flow membaca. Hal ini saya perhatikan terjadi di sejumlah light novel yang terbit di Indonesia. Tidak perlunya kenapa? Beberapa alasan.
Satu, catatan kaki ternyata menjelaskan hal yang nantinya dijelaskan juga di dalam bukunya. Terkadang catatan kaki malah terasa 'merendahkan' pembaca, seolah mereka tidak mengetahui suatu hal atau tidak cukup bisa memahami atau mencari tahu sendiri hal yang dijelaskan tersebut.
Kedua, catatan kaki malah sibuk menjustifikasi alasan pilihan kata oleh penerjemah, sesuatu hal yang seharusnya merupakan bahan rundingan antara penerjemah dan editor saja, atau paling banter dituliskan saja nanti di kata penutup dari penerjemah atau glosarium di ujung buku. Itu juga kalau rasanya benar-benar diperlukan. Kalau pilihan kata tidak mengganggu kenyamanan ataupun pemahaman pembaca, ya urusan dapur itu tidak perlu diberitahukan ke pembaca.
Ketiga, yang masih ada hubungannya dengan nomor dua, penjelasan atau justifikasi yang diberikan juga sering kali malah terasa aneh dan kontradiktif dengan satu sama lain. Misalnya, awalnya catatan kaki (saya sebut catatan kaki saja ya, karena saya tidak tahu yang menambahkan adalah penerjemah atau editor) mengatakan, istilah miko yang digunakan dalam bahasa Jepang di novelnya (ya, tentu saja, namanya novel yang aslinya ditulis dalam bahasa Jepang) tidak digunakan dalam terjemahan bahasa Indonesia karena latar belakang cerita (lebih mendekati) Eropa zaman dulu, bukan Asia. Sebagai gantinya, digunakan istilah berbahasa Inggris, shrine maiden ...ya? Kalau begitu kenapa tidak mencari atau membuat padanan dalam bahasa Indonesia saja? Kreatiflah berbahasa Indonesia. Sebagai penerjemah dan editor, ada kebebasan besar berbahasa di tangan kalian, lho.
Nah, lucunya, berikutnya ternyata teks berbahasa Indonesia mempertahankan sejumlah istilah berbahasa Jepang seperti majin dan seigan. Dilengkapi dengan catatan kaki yang menjelaskan artinya apa. Lho? Lho? Tadi katanya latar belakangnya bukan Jepang jadi tidak mau pakai istilah Jepang? Bagaimana? Serius deh, cari saja padanannya dalam bahasa Indonesia, atau terjemahkan kalimat dengan luwes sehingga maknanya sampai ke pembaca tanpa perlu menggunakan istilah asing tersebut. Misalnya (ini misalnya saja karena saya tidak ingat persis kalimatnya), daripada 'ia memasang kuda-kuda seigan', buat saja langsung kalimat bahasa Indonesianya menjadi 'ia memasang kuda-kuda dengan pedang terarah ke mata lawan'. Selesai. Maknanya sampai, kan? Toh istilah seigan itu hanya digunakan sekali, bukan istilah khusus yang penting dan digunakan berkali-kali.
Gara-gara membaca berulang kali terganggu oleh catatan kaki, saya mulai membatin: nilainya di Goodreads gua sunat juga nih ntar? UNTUNGNYA, lama-kelamaan catatan-catatan kaki itu menghilang. Dan, benar saja, flow membaca jadi enak sekali! Kesalahan penggunaan imbuhan semacam ‘mengajarkan’ padahal seharusnya ‘mengajari’ juga hilang… rasa-rasanya sejak bagian berisikan wawancara dengan Solon. Selain itu, ya memang pada dasarnya bukunya menarik, dan terjemahannya bagus dan enak dibaca. Kecepatan membaca saya naik dan buku pun saya tuntaskan hari itu juga. Balik deh, jadi bintang lima.
Di antara banjir light novel bertemakan fantasi dengan latar belakang ala Eropa, Who Killed the Brave? ini unik karena ceritanya dimulai justru setelah para pejuang menang melawan Raja Iblis—keberhasilan yang sayangnya dinodai kematian sang Pahlawan. Siapa yang sebenarnya membunuh sang Pahlawan? Kita pun diajak ‘memecahkan misteri’ tersebut melalui serangkaian transkrip wawancara dengan sejumlah orang yang mengenal sang Pahlawan, juga tuturan yang bergonta-ganti sudut pandang orang pertama. Info yang kita dapatkan simpang siur, karena apa yang diucapkan seseorang saat wawancara, ternyata berbeda dengan apa yang sebenarnya ia alami atau pikirkan dalam hati. Di mata orang lain pun, kejadian yang sama pun bisa dipandang berbeda. Pun setelah misteri itu terjawab, masih ada pengungkapan lain yang mengagetkan di sepertiga akhir cerita.
Misteri yang menjadi judul novel ini selesai di volume pertama ini. Katanya sih volume kedua dan ketiga berisi cerita-cerita tambahan yang dibuat setelah novel ini selesai dan ternyata laris. Ini berbeda dengan Ishura—yang sama-sama dimulai setelah sang pahlawan menang melawan raja iblis tetapi malah hilang tak tentu rimbanya, dan orang-orang berusaha mencari tahu apa yang sebenarnya terjadi. Misteri hilangnya sang pahlawan di Ishura mewarnai keseluruhan serial dan memang dijadikan bagian dari plot jangka panjang, sementara Who Killed the Brave? sepertinya aslinya direncanakan untuk pendek saja, dan kesuksesannya tidak disangka-sangka.
Volume pertama diakhiri kata penutup yang sungguh sangat menginspirasi dari si penulis, yang menceritakan bahwa ia mulai menjadi penulis novel pada usia 44 tahun. Who Killed the Brave? sendiri adalah novel (serial?) keduanya yang mulai diterbitkan saat ia berusia 45 tahun. Jadi kalau Anda sudah berkepala empat dan masih beraspirasi menjadi penulis yang karyanya diterbitkan… ayo, kita sama-sama terus berusaha!
Oh, yang terakhir: Saya lebih suka judul berbahasa Inggris terbitan Indonesia ini daripada judul berbahasa Inggris terbitan Amerika Serikat, haha.

- เพิ่งเคยได้อ่านไลท์โนเวลเป็นครั้งแรก และก็รู้สึกว่าไม่เหมาะกับเราอย่างแรง ดังนั้น review นี้ผมเทียบกับหนังสือปกติเลย อาจจะใจร้ายไปหน่อย ให้ถือได้เลยว่า review นี้มาจากคนที่ไม่คุ้นเคยกับ J Light Novel (แต่ผมชอบอ่าน manga นะ)
- เรื่องนี้จะมาในรูปแบบการสัมภาษณ์ตัวละครต่างๆเกี่ยวกับผู้กล้าเพื่อหาเบาะแส (แบบเบาบาง ทั่วไปจะแค��ถามความสัมพันธ์ แต่แทบไม่พูดเกี่ยวกับการตาย) สลับกับบทแทรกที่อธิบายในมุมผู้กล้าและตัวละครที่ถูกสัมภาษณ์ และเรื่องนี้ไม่ได้โฟกัสใดๆเกี่ยวกับการเดินทางและการต่สู้กับจอมมาร โฟกัสแค่ข้อมูลผู้กล้าจากตัวละครอื่น
- สิ่งที่ชอบก็มี เช่นแนวทางการดำเนินเรื่องแบบราโชมอนที่ในเหตุการณ์เดียวกัน นำเสนอมุมมองต่างกัน และอย่าง twists 2 จุดในเรื่องนี้ถือว่าใช้ได้เลย แต่.. execution ไม่ผ่านอย่างแรง
- จุดบอดอย่างแรงของเล่มนี้คือ pacing ที่ยืดเยื้อ
ผมคิดว่ามุมมองของราโชมอนจะมีประสิทธิภาพมากถ้าเราได้ค้นพบอะไรใหม่ๆจากมุมที่แตกต่าง แต่เรื่องนี้แทบไม่มีอะไรใหม่ที่เกินคาดจากการสำรวจมุมมองของตัวละครอื่นเลยเลยกลายเป็นเหตุการณ์ใดๆในเรื่องจะต้องฉายซ้ำมากกว่า 1 รอบโดยไม่มีความจำเป็นเลย ซึ่งผมว่าจุดนี้จริงๆสามารถไปได้ 2 ทางคือ quality of writting, หรือเปลี่ยนเรื่องนี้เป็น manga แทน
เนื้อเรื่องที่เบาบางขนาดนี้เอามาแปลงเป็น manga จะกระชับกว่านี้มากและอาจจะ impact มากกว่าการเขียนบรรยายที่ทำได้ไม่ถึง (และความเบียวสไตล์อนิเมก็เหมาะกว่า manga มากกว่า)
- ส่วน twists ไอเดียถือว่าดี แต่จังหวะการ twists มันแห้งมากจนไม่อิมแพค twist แรกเป็นการเปิดให้เรื่องนี้น่าสนใจขึ้น แต่ไปๆมาๆก็ over explaining จนเปลืองหน้ากระดาษจากมุมมองราโชมอน ส่วน twist ที่สองที่เจ๋งและน่าเอามาเล่นต่อได้เยอะกว่านี้

Review:
- เพิ่งเคยได้อ่านไลท์โนเวลเป็นครั้งแรก และก็รู้สึกว่าไม่เหมาะกับเราอย่างแรง ดังนั้น review นี้ผมเทียบกับหนังสือปกติเลย อาจจะใจร้ายไปหน่อย ให้ถือได้เลยว่า review นี้มาจากคนที่ไม่คุ้นเคยกับ J Light Novel (แต่ผมชอบอ่าน manga นะ)
- เรื่องนี้จะมาในรูปแบบการสัมภาษณ์ตัวละครต่างๆเกี่ยวกับผู้กล้าเพื่อหาเบาะแส (แบบเบาบาง ทั่วไปจะแค��ถามความสัมพันธ์ แต่แทบไม่พูดเกี่ยวกับการตาย) สลับกับบทแทรกที่อธิบายในมุมผู้กล้าและตัวละครที่ถูกสัมภาษณ์ และเรื่องนี้ไม่ได้โฟกัสใดๆเกี่ยวกับการเดินทางและการต่สู้กับจอมมาร โฟกัสแค่ข้อมูลผู้กล้าจากตัวละครอื่น
- สิ่งที่ชอบก็มี เช่นแนวทางการดำเนินเรื่องแบบราโชมอนที่ในเหตุการณ์เดียวกัน นำเสนอมุมมองต่างกัน และอย่าง twists 2 จุดในเรื่องนี้ถือว่าใช้ได้เลย แต่.. execution ไม่ผ่านอย่างแรง
- จุดบอดอย่างแรงของเล่มนี้คือ pacing ที่ยืดเยื้อ
ผมคิดว่ามุมมองของราโชมอนจะมีประสิทธิภาพมากถ้าเราได้ค้นพบอะไรใหม่ๆจากมุมที่แตกต่าง แต่เรื่องนี้แทบไม่มีอะไรใหม่ที่เกินคาดจากการสำรวจมุมมองของตัวละครอื่นเลยเลยกลายเป็นเหตุการณ์ใดๆในเรื่องจะต้องฉายซ้ำมากกว่า 1 รอบโดยไม่มีความจำเป็นเลย ซึ่งผมว่าจุดนี้จริงๆสามารถไปได้ 2 ทางคือ quality of writting, หรือเปลี่ยนเรื่องนี้เป็น manga แทน
เนื้อเรื่องที่เบาบางขนาดนี้เอามาแปลงเป็น manga จะกระชับกว่านี้มากและอาจจะ impact มากกว่าการเขียนบรรยายที่ทำได้ไม่ถึง (และความเบียวสไตล์อนิเมก็เหมาะกว่า manga มากกว่า)
- ส่วน twists ไอเดียถือว่าดี แต่จังหวะการ twists มันแห้งมากจนไม่อิมแพค twist แรกเป็นการเปิดให้เรื่องนี้น่าสนใจขึ้น แต่ไปๆมาๆก็ over explaining จนเปลืองหน้ากระดาษจากมุมมองราโชมอน ส่วน twist ที่สองที่เจ๋งและน่าเอามาเล่นต่อได้เยอะกว่านี้

เป็น stand alone ที่อย่างเอา ราโชมอนแบบ Light Novel
เมื่อจอมมารถูกปราบลง แต่ผู้กล้าที่เป็นหัวใจ เป็นความหวัง เป็นหัวหน้าปาร์ตี้เดินทางนั้น ไม่ได้มีชีวิตรอดกลับมา
เรื่องพูดถึงฟอร์มเดิมๆ โลกแฟนตาซีที่ต้องมีพระเอกไปฆ่าจอมมาร และอาณาจักรจะสงบสุข ตัวละครยืนพื้นตามนี้

August 25, 2025ส่วนที่น่าชื่นชม คือ การเล่าเรื่องที่ค่อยๆ เล่าเรื่องของผู้กล้าผ่านมุมมองของลีออน ลูกตระกูลขุนนางใหญ่, มาเรีย สตรีศักดิ์สิทธิ์, โซรอน มหาปราชญ์ และตัวละครอื่นๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับผู้กล้า ทำให้เห็นภาพว่าคนอื่นคิดยังไงกับผู้กล้า และตัวผู้กล้ามองคนอื่นยังไง
อ่านลื่น อ่านไว เนื้อเรื่องเหมือนธีมตะวันตกแต่ความคิดความอ่านตัวละครทุกตัวเป็นญี่ปุ่นเหลือเกิน(ก็คนญี่ปุ่นเขียนนิ) มันจะมีความ misogyny โผล่ออกมาให้เห็น รวมไปถึงกรอบความคิดเรื่องการแต่งงานมีครอบครัว และลักษณะนิสัยของตัวละครที่มีกลิ่นของสังคมชายเป็นใหญ่ในญี่ปุ่นสูงมาก ถ้าได้อ่านตอนอายุน้อยกว่านี้น่าจะชอบกว่านี้

ไม่ได้อ่านหนังสือแบบรวดเดียวจบมานานมาก เล่มนี้เป็นเล่มที่ผสมผสานความเป็นนิยายสืบสวน ในรูปแบบของ light novel ที่มันทำให้อ่านง่ายและเรื่องเดินไปข้างหน้าตลอดเวลา
แต่ในทางกลับกัน setup ของเรื่องที่มันว่าด้วยการพยายามบันทึกพงศาวดารของผู้กล้าที่เสียชีวิตหลังจากปราบจอมมารไปได้แค่ 4 ปี มันเป็นการหยิบความแฟนตาซี มาผสมผสานกับการสืบสวนสอบสวนของคนที่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับการตายของผู้กล้า ที่มาพร้อมกับภูมิหลังของตัวละครลายล้อมที่มีเหตุปัจจัยกับตัวผู้กล้าที่จากไป ทำให้เราเห็นมิติของความสัมพันธ์และความเป็นคนธรรมดามากกว่าการเป็นผู้กล้าที่ได้รับคำเชิดชูหลังจากที่ปราบจอมมาเรียบร้อยแล้ว
ถือว่าคิดถูกที่ตามเพื่อนๆ หลายคนที่อ่านไปก่อนแล้ว และมันก็ไม่ผิดหวังกับเรื่องราวที่เราได้ติดตามจนจบสำหรับเล่มนี้

เนื้อเรื่องนำเสนอผ่านมุมมองของแต่ละตัวละครที่ทำให้เราเข้าใจและอินกับเนื้อเรื่อง รวมถึงตัวละครมากขึ้นมากขึ้น แต่ละตัวละครมีเอกลักษณ์ชัดเจน กลิ่นอายความเป็นญี่ปุ่นชัดมาก
แถมเนื้อเรื่องยังปูปมไว่อย่างน่าติดตาม พอเริ่มอ่านแล้วไม่มีเบื่อเลย แทบจะอยากอ่านให้จบในทีเดียว อีกอย่างนึงที่รู้สึกว่าเป็นสิ่งที่ทำให้เรื่องนี้ออกมาน่าสนใจมาก คือการนำเสนอคำว่า “ผู้กล้า” ออกมาในรูปแบบที่ต่างจากการตีความกระแสหลักที่เราเห็นว่าเป็นผู้กอบกู้อยู่บ่อย ๆ

I read the web novel version on syosetu, and not the print version which is 70% longer than the WN, according to the author. It seems like the author added a lot of backstories of the characters in the print version.
This WN uses multiple characters’ POV to write about the same events. I always like this kind of storytelling approach. But I don’t know if it’s because my expectation for it was too high due to all the rave reviews I read, it was a bit of a letdown when the truth was revealed quite early in the story. Even though there is still another surprise afterward, but because there is little buildup for the latter surprise, the second half of the story wasn’t as interesting.

เนื้อเรื่องน่าสนใจดี ดำเนินเรื่องแบบ multiple pov มี plot twist หลายอย่าง แต่รู้สึกว่าสำนวนการเขียนยังไม่ถึง ยังห้วนๆไป ไม่รู้ว่าเป็นที่คนเขียนหรือนักแปลหรือทั้งคู่ เจอคำผิดเยอะพอสมควรด้วย
เฉลยปมเร็ว ปุปปับเกินไป ไม่มี lead-up ที่ชัดเจนกว่านี้ รู้สึก anti-climax ไปหน่อย แล้วก็ใส่บทโรแมนติกมาตอนท้ายแบบ unnecessary โดยเฉพาะที่

This was a really interesting story, told through the perspective of people who knew the hero Ares, shared via an interviewer. As each character shares their side, we get a deeper picture of what kind of person Ares was in their eyes, as well as how he ultimately met his end. I thought this was such a unique and creative way to tell a story

The story has a simple plot that is easy to understand. The translation also amazing. The character development is excellent, with the story pov is changing from the perspectives of each character. The plot twist is good. The story is very heartwarming. Readers can easily immerse themselves in the story and feel the struggles that the protagonist goes through.

เรื่องนี้นำเสนอตัวตนของผู้กล้ามาได้แปลกมากๆ ถ้าเทียบกับแนวแฟนซีที่เคนเห็นมา มันส่งผลทำให้ตอนจบของเรื่องมีความอิมแพค และเข้าใจบริบทตัวละครมากขึ้นครับ

Daken-san, I was only going to make a review about the book but I think no one else would have created a hero with this tenacity and heart. I had so many times I wept, laughed and learned. I guess throughout my reading journey and life I forgot that heroes aren't put on a pedestal through talent and privilege alone, it is through tenacity, sheer and unshakeable willpower and it has warmed my heart. Thank you.

this was better than i had expected. it was more poignant and sincere than i had initially thought it'd be. i'm not sure if i like the interview format of it though. the fragments were more interesting, but maybe the interview sections would have been better after the fragments? the plot of this volume is quite literally to answer who killed the hero, but i don't find that to be a very good........point for reading this. it could have had a better presentation of the question, or framed differently. it has the potential to be better.
