Veilbound: The Shadowbond Trials

Rate this book
At Obsidian Circle Academy, survival is a lesson you learn in blood.

Lyra doesn't belong—not among the elite mage families, not in a school where magic is currency and weakness is fatal. She came for answers about her missing brother. What she finds is the Bloodveil a brutal series of magical trials where failure means exile… or death.

When the Academy forces her into a rare and dangerous magical bond with her sworn rival, Kael Draven—cold, brilliant, and infuriatingly powerful—she’s trapped. Their pain is shared. Their victories, too. But so are their secrets.

As the trials begin, illusions twist reality, enemies strike from the shadows, and Lyra’s bond with Kael deepens into something darker—something neither of them can control. To survive the tournament, she must confront not only her past, but the growing power inside her that threatens to consume them both.

And buried deep beneath the Academy lies a secret that could shatter the world… if it doesn’t shatter her first.

I went into Veilbound hoping for something character-driven, a little dark, and immersive, and it delivered on all fronts.

Lyra Vale is a standout lead. She’s sharp, layered, and constantly navigating impossible situations without ever slipping into cliché. The choices she makes feel real, and the emotional weight behind them sticks with you. No one in this story is purely good or bad, and that made the entire cast more compelling.

The worldbuilding unfolds naturally. No giant info dumps, just steady reveals that keep you curious. It strikes a nice balance between magic, politics, and personal stakes. Gritty at times, but never bleak for the sake of it.

By the end, I wasn’t just enjoying it, I was fully invested. If you’re into grounded, emotionally rich fantasy with high stakes and strong writing, Veilbound is more than worth it.

Can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
