I read the English translation of this, VeloPress' forthcoming 'Run or Die' (due out July 2013). Because I am an ultrarunning nerd with a generally unquenchable interest in the lives and philosophies of fellow distance runners, I enjoyed many parts of this--particularly some of the musings in the first few chapters about what truly compels Kilian to run. However, for as short as the book is, it dragged on at times ... lacking much structure in the overall book, each chapter often read like an extended play-by-play of his biggest races and adventures, rather than a really finely crafted work of storytelling. Perhaps some of it was lost in translation, too, but I found it hard to relate to much in this as well ... he's SO hyper-competitive, so wholly devoted to his running that there's very little room for much else in the way of life, thoughts, relationships, passions, etc While this tunnel-vision obsession can be compelling in its own way, here I just found it alienating, like I didn't really know any more about Kilian at the end of the book than I did at the beginning. The only real trope he develops outside of running is his ephemeral relationship with Alba--which was interesting, but I wanted more of this human-Kilian, outside of his competitions. Unfortunately, 95% of the narrative in this book is just straight competition ... e.g. here's what I attempted, here's what my body was dealing with, here's what I ate, here's who was ahead of me, here's how much I wanted to win, etc.

I had really really high hopes for this book, as an ultrarunner and avid reader of all running related things!

I was very disappointed and would not recommend this book to my friends to read. I read the VeloPress english translation of this book, so perhaps some of the story was lost-in-translation. However it seemed to be extremely melodramatic in language....perhaps he really does feel this way (e.g. with his body constantly compelled to run faster, longer, race, compete).....but it really seemed like a ton of melodrama and lacking more specifics on how he trained, fueled and the other parts of his life outside of racing.

The book was rambling and at times I had no clue what race/adventure was being described, as chapters would just dive into some story without being clear about what the race was.

I felt that with better structure, more specifics/tips and less melodrama the book has potential, but as written it is more like a bunch of blog posts thrown together than a real book.

The book was also very short....like 180 pages (not very dense pages). I finished it in like 90 minutes (skimming over parts that were getting monotonous). When I compare to Rich Rolls "Finding Ultra" or Scott Jurek's "Eat and Run or Dean's "Ultramarathon Man"...this book is no comparison....not even close in terms of reading enjoyment or learning I get from it.

Quick read of a book my daughter bought for my recent birthday. One of my running heroes since completing the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. Suffice to say he completed it a damn sight faster than I did.

Genetics, living in the mountains and a desire to win fuelled Jornet in his career. Not having any of the above kept me in the back of the pack. But nice to see Killian also has my sound navigation skills - not😁

‘The secret isn’t in your legs, but in your strength of mind.’ Yes I think I would agree with that. Recovering from a recent trail run tree root trip (luckily my nose broke my fall) I smiled at his ‘gliding like an eagle’ analogy. For me that would have to be a blind eagle.

I enjoyed the read. Not as detailed or as visceral as say Mike Cudahy’s ‘Wild Trails to Far Horizons’ but good to peruse.

Yes Jornet is a better runner than writer. As I am a better reader than runner😉

You can feel the love for the sport and for the environment.

First let me get something out of the way, Kilian Jornet is not an amazing writer. However, instead of having someone else write the book for him, like so many others do, he decided to use his own voice and style to convey to the reader his love for the sport. Through the pages, he shows us a few races, record breaking attempts, a romance, but above all, he tells us about the mountains, trails, rivers and forests he has experienced through his career. He does this with a reverence rarely seen in other books about running. It's almost as if getting first place, or breaking a record were secondary to the enjoyment of communing with nature and enjoying the activity. I think this approach resonates better with most runners out there, since even though most of us race and try to improve on our times, the main reason we do it is the love for the act of running itself.

There are some sections in the book that are more enjoyable than others though. But I can see how different readers would have a different opinion based on what their interests are. For example, for me it was more fun to read about the Western States 100 than about the crossing of the Pyrenees. But overall I enjoyed all sections of this book. The last chapter, whose title was borrowed from the author Haruki Murakami, was interesting and enlightening.

This is definitely a book for all runners out there, not matter what your pace is or whether you run mostly on roads or on trails, you are likely to enjoy this read.

I received a complimentary of this book in exchange for an honest review.

He has received criticism for writing about his thoughts, running philosophy, and mental struggles and how he overcomes them, but that is the exact reason I liked Jornet’s book. How someone trains and what they eat doesn’t really interest me too much anymore, besides it’s an easy Google search to find that kind of thing if one is seeking out a program. I wanted to hear about his honest recounts of how he gets to where he is the best trail runner alive. He delivered. Maybe he rambles a bit, but I wasn’t really bothered by that as it did seem to fit the narrative of his running stream of consciousness.

Many people have written here how disappointed they were with the book. That there was no specific information on one of the world’s best ultra runner’s diet or training methods. But I think most of them fail to realize that it was not the goal of this work.

I see “Run or Die” (or “Courir ou Mourir, because I read it in French) as Kilian’s diary. It’s a great way to get a glimpse into the inner workings, thoughts, sufferings of a world class athlete. It really shows that we’re all human and that no matter how hard we train or how talented we are, things can go wrong and it takes a lot of determination and mental and physical strength to persevere.

Yes, the book is a bit melodramatic, but isn’t running that as well? I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to read about his unbelievable feats (that may sometimes feel cocky) because I’ll never get to experience them myself.

And this work also made me fall in love with running even more. It let me understand that we’re actually not that different. A world class athlete or an amateur runner - we think about the same things and we see running in the same way. Because, at the end of the day, we’re all just runners.

A tady Kilian exceluje. Jednak v popisu dechberoucí přírody a jednak v popisu svých myšlenek.

I really did love this book, but I think I loved it because:

1. I dedicate a considerable amount of time and brain space to planning and training.
2. Kilian is one of my two favorite current athletes.
3. I know what it’s like to be alone and running for more than 5 hours.
4. I’m still competing.

“Thresholds don’t exist in terms of our bodies. Our speed and strength depend on our body, but the real thresholds, those that make us give up or continue to struggle, those that enable us to fulfill our dreams, depend not on our bodies but on our minds and the hunger we feel to turn dreams into reality.”

“I take deep breaths and launch back into a run, jumping and climbing farther up, running faster and faster. There is no boundary, no threshold, nothing that can stop me. I smell the trees, the wet grass, spring, the rich earth, all of which carry the unmistakable aroma of life. I am happy. I stop and rest for a moment, breathing hard, my hands on my knees. I’m chasing no one, and no one is chasing me. I think I happiness isn’t a destination but rather a path to follow, spending time along that way and postponing its inevitable end.”

(Although, for the Christian our happiness is only destined to grow, never end.)

Kilian Jornet traversed the Pyrenees when he was 10, with his parents. His love of nature, wild places and challenges shines through this story. He let's us know that he struggles with the challenges he puts his body through and how his mind overcomes. A good writer as well s a great ultra trail runner, skier, endurance athlete, he made me feel what he felt, see what he saw. Quote from the book sums up how he feels.

'I am happy. I stop and rest for a moment, breathing hard, my hands on my knees. I am chasing no-one, and no-one is chasing me. I think how happiness isn't a destination but rather a path to follow, spending time along that way and postponing its inevitable end.' Loved it.

There’s a quintessential clip in the 2011 movie Unbreakable—a documentary on the 2010 Western States 100 Mile Ultramarathon—where Kilian Jornet launches off the side of the banked narrow trail and throws a back-scratcher, in trail shoes.

Kilian Jornet is one of the super stars in ultrarunning. In this book he talks a lot about what drives him forward and why ultra endurance events appeal to him. There are quick glances at his training regime although this is probably the least relevant part. No normal human being is able to train like him. It probably comes down to what he summarizes in the Skyrunner's Manifesto:

Kill or kill. Besa o mata. Kiss glory or die in the attempt. (...)
Now is the time to suffer, the time to fight, the time to win. Kiss or kill.

What I enjoyed most was the description of the actual experience with its highs and lows and the desire to find the personal limit. This would have fit perfectly into Alex Hutchinson's Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance. Kilian often states that he sees the mind as a muscle as well that needs to be trained. What holds you back aren't necessarily your legs but the brain that tries to protect the body. That's interesting and in line with the saying that when you think you can't go any further you still have 50% left in your tank.

Something that until now I have only heard from thru-hikers is that stretches of time will pass where you zoom in and out. For a trail runner this can be dangerous as it can result in a fall or missing a turn and ending up in the wrong place which means extending the run or facing darkness. On the other hand, what can you do? The distances are mind-blowing long.

Despite all the struggles Kilian never stops to rave about the nature, reaching places that only few people will ever see, or running above the clouds. This is something that resonates with me and to have the physical capabilities to go on such adventures is my main motivation.

There is more about competition, using visualization techniques and a longer part about his girlfriend Alba who has a different view at all this.

Run or Die is an enjoyable book that allows you to look inside one of the top ultra-distance runner of our time.

Kilian is a boss and quite arguably the greatest ultra runner of my time. Fun to get into the brain and inspiration of such an insane athlete.

There are great adventure writers and then great athletes asked to write about their experience, and this definitely fell into the latter category.

Really enjoyed this one. The diary entry type style of writing really appeals to me. It seems very authentic. Killian’s writing is more focussed on the winning side of running than any other book I’ve read but I guess it’s fitting given the type of runner he is.

The writing was choppy, badly phrased, and grammatically dubious - though perhaps a better translation would do the book more justice. The actual content was awesome, though!

Had high hopes from the greatest ultra runner of all time but to say this book was underwhelming would be an understatement. This felt like a collection of short stories about his adventures and the writing was very melodramatic. No story arc across the book and didn’t feel like it provided any insight into who Kilian is as a person
