Shinichi Gotō has finally discovered who from his past paid to have him imprisoned for 10 years, but the reasons behind it remain a mystery. With only two volumes left, I don't think I can resist diving into them much longer!
Finally nearing the end, many secrets are revealed. The characters have been written very well in this volume. The readers not only care about the plot, but also about the fate of the characters.
This has already been a slow burn series compared to the fast-paced movie, but this is where it truly starts just spinning its wheels. A shocking moment happens where a character dies--and then it's immediately revealed that he didn't actually die, his death was just faked for...no apparent reason, as it didn't really lead to anything. In fact, this is the first volume where I really felt that I hadn't learned anything new about the mystery. It's not a game of chess where the pieces are constantly getting put in place so that actions can happen. It's checkers where half the game is the two players talking about the moves they could make but aren't making.

this one definitely lost steam compared to the previous two volumes. it makes me wonder if tsuchiya a) didn't know what The Event was yet or b) just wanted to stretch the serialization a bit longer. i just don't know how many times a man can try to remember before he actually gets there. like is his revelation on the last page even legit? i guess we'll find out.
The tension is definitely building after such a long, meticulous tale - it finally feels like we are reaching the finish line — definitely interested to see how this plays out. I like how the slow pace specifically seems designed to allow time to simply look at the drawings. It’s refreshing to read a comic book that takes its time.
First disappointing volume for me. Not much happens, to-ing and fro-ing between Goto and his adversary. It tries to weave a more tangled Web but only succeeds in causing confusion or retracing steps over and over.
Things are picking up as we get closer to the end. We know who the captor was, and we know the time frame of the incident that sparked the imprisonment, but we still don't know exactly what happened. The suspense is building!
The story takes a tenser mood when "Alias Dojimo" claims victory when he reveals his own name. Then "Alias Dojimo" fakes the murder of Goto's bar friend as Goto's punishment instead of death. While Goto eventually learns that his friend is not dead, he now realizes that "Alias Dojimo" is not above murdering the people about whom Goto cares. The game is then announced to go into "sudden death" overtime: Goto still hasn't figured out WHY he is the target of hate by "Alias Dojimo", and the latter seems to be enjoying the game too much to end it by killing Goto. Given that Goto knows that those whom he loves are now in danger, he conspires with his teacher to hide Eri, the girl with whom he started a tryst after being released from imprisonment.
Despite the eventful nature of this issue, the story feels like it is moving WAAAY too slow.

I have to admit that at this point, the level of gore withstanding, it's becoming better than the movie. It is in this part where it gets even more complicated (with the addition of their former schoolteacher). Plus, more social commentary.
Amazing. Really amazing. I can't understand why the 8 volumes haven't been collected into an oversized volume, but it's only a matter of time. The story is incredible and the artwork matches. So different (and so much more compelling) than the movie.
