I'm an Avenger fan, so I enjoyed the book. If you're not an Avenger fan, or never seen an episode, it would be meaningless, sound like all hype and memory better than reality.

I was really hoping for some insights on my favorite episodes (reason for checking it out), but that was not to be found.

The full title of this book is "The Avengers: all 161 Original Episodes--story Cast Pictures." It had a one to three page intro to each chapter/season (or series, as the British use instead of season), providing the title, staff, and synopsis of each episode.

These were large pages with small print, so quite a bit of information. I enjoyed it.

I did not read the synopsis--I've seen all of the existing episodes over the last couple years (I own seasons IV, V, and VI)--so don't know how good the synopsis are, but they're fairly long.

Note: Avenger fans know that of the first season, there's only 2 1/3 episodes (of the 26 made) in existence. They would recorded on tape, like VCR tape, and then record over it after it played. Thus the show was virtually live, since they didn't have editing ability at that time. (And they do make mistakes and have prop issues.)

Patrick Macnee, as John Steed, was in all (with some exceptions the first year, since he was not the star yet). The others were: Ian Hendry as Dr David Keel (season I: 1961, he was the star), Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale (season II: 1962, and season III: 1963-64), Diana Rigg as Mrs Emma Peel (season IV: 1965-66, and season V: 1967-68), and Linda Thorson as Tara King (season VI: 1969). BTW, his dates are not quite correct, e.g., Thorson was 68-69.

It also has a chapter for The New Avengers (1976) with Patrick Macnee, Gareth Hunt (Mike Gambit) and Joanna Lumley (Purdey ). A handful of pages talking about the show, but no episode synopsis, titles, etc. I'm not a fan of The New Avengers.

The last chapter talked about the Avenger play (1971). I had not been aware it went to the theater. Sounds like it had a strong opening and then went into obscurity. From the writeup about its content, it sounded mostly sleezy. What a defamation to a show that was so above that.
